This is great Paul. I get these kinds of things all the time, unfortunately. It seems to be very hard to explain to a customer that it is actually cheaper to bring it in to the shop instead of trying to perform these repairs at home. Great video as always.

great video and a great resource for waveforms, thank you. I like to split the screen into 2 views sometimes when using reference waveforms that way you can zoom independently and measure the degrees of difference.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 лет назад
I need to figure out how to do that. Someone else told me the same thing. Something about selecting another scope view?
@danwenig6179
@danwenig6179 8 лет назад
Yes, pretty easy actually, with a file open such as the one you have here, click views menu, then click "add view" then "scope". It will open a second scope screen below the first one with the same channels on it. you switch between scopes by clicking anywhere in the field of the scope you want to edit and work as usual. you can right click on one view and select the channels you want to see there including any loaded reference waves, then right click on the other and select the channels you want to display there. The advantage of doing this is you can zoom vertically and horizontally independently and use cursors and phase markers independently. This is also very useful for getting before and after repair shots on the same printout page for the customer.

Really enjoying the premium channel Paul. My only advise is delete the sounds in decibels for the classroom chairs. I know how to do it in a program I use called Pro Tools. Everytime the chairs screech, and by adjust the waveform on the equaliser plugin, the sound would be deleted and never make it to final production. Anyway so did you get your head around the term tomatoe for the oxygen sensor? It made me smile when I heard it. Just done 8 hours listening to your channel 10/10

Hi, wanted to suggest some topics for future videos if you can do it. 1) videos on the multiplexed wiring systems found on European cars. 2) Also can you show safe methods for testing solenoids. These soleonoids like ones of EVAP can get burnt if attached directly to a car battery. I use a 9V battery for these tests but there should be a safe method with a 12V battery too by limiting the current. 3) Lean misifre diagnosis due to lean fuel (water mixed with gasoline or too much water in Ethanol).

Great Video Paul, really appreciate the amount of effort and time you must put into these videos. Just a thought on why the capture you took from the vehicle you were working on didn't match up with the waveform you loaded. At the beginning of the video, your "sweep" as I call it because I have a Verus, is 5 seconds, but the one you loaded looked like a 500 ms sweep. The capture file also indicated it was taken key on engine running at idle, which will be running faster than the cranking waveform you took (which you obviously know... lol). I assume that when you loaded your waveform into the downloaded one, it changed the sweep to the same scale as the file it was going into, so it looked like you didn't have the repetition. Simply, I think the difference was because the engine you are working on was turning slower than the known good pattern.

Great video! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge over the years. I've learned a ton honestly. You've helped me become a pretty alright electrical/diag tech. I really can't thank you enough. Love watching your case studies. Keep up the great work and I'll keep referring people to this channel and teaching them what I've learned here. I was wonder if I could ask you a question though... I'm currently thinking about starting a mobile diagnostic service in my area. Is it hard to keep a steady pay check and how much do you charge per hour? I was thinking about $80 for the first hour and $45 every hour after that. Think that's to much or too little? Guess I'm kinda looking for a bit of a mentor or just a point in the right direction. If not that's fine too. Just keep doing what you're doing because you're an inspiration to many up and coming techs. Either way, have a great day!
@ScannerDanner

Thanks so much! I think that sounds totally fine. A good way to market yourself is to go to individual garages and offer the first one for free. Let them see what you can do! No room for error on that first one though right?

That's a fantastic way to go about it! Thank you for the idea. Just wondering with this type of service would you recommend setting up an LLC and/or write up a legal agreement contract? Thinking due to the fact that people are super sue happy these days it really wouldn't be a bad idea. Also, I was wondering your views on PCM flashing/updates? Think that would be worth looking into or just sending them to the dealer. I currently send them to the dealer and have been considering getting my hands on a Pass Thru Pro 3. However, as you may have guessed. I am unsure... Thank you again for everything. Have a great day and night!

I saw you use in the video there are several types of oscilloscope, the first is Pico Scope, the second is Snap on, there is ATS Escope , I want to know, which is the best performance of the three types of oscilloscope, or the highest price?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 лет назад
each one is different and has it's advantages. My Snap-on scopes are more mobile friendly because I do not need a laptop. But when it comes to detail and function, the Pico is by far the best scope I have ever used.

Unfortunately its only available in Pico automotive version. They sell the same scopes for 1/8 price for general use but make automotive version crazy expensive. Same scope, just firmware change.

You are absolutely right sir. I was considering purchasing a base level picoscope just to access the waveform library. The most "affordable" is over $900 u.s. I recently aquired a Modis and wanted to compare detail between the two. I know the pico will be better but since I am just starting waveform studies, I just wanted a comparative. I even inquired about a monthly or yearly subscription but no go.

Oh, just an F.Y.I., if you call their tech support, ask for someone other than Reggie. I don't know if he didn't get any the night before or was perhaps constipated (who knows), but he was very curt almost to the point of being rude. Hopefully, this is not representative of the others in their tech support division. My initial contact was Amanda I think and she was friendly and helpful.

FYI, FOR THE POOR DIYer's like ME: If you download the FREE Pico 6 Automotive software from the website, install then open it up. If you go into the top menu named "AUTOMOTIVE". In that drop down menu, make sure the "SHOW WEB HELP" box is ticked and then select from the list of waveforms they have (THERE ARE MANY). The waveform will open in the software, but if the "SHOW HELP" box was ticked as I stated earlier, the internet will auto open and bring you to there site with the selected waveform open as well as all the info you need to do the test. Just print to PDF or paper and you got it. Its a pain to print them all, but worth it.

Thank you for taking the time, wow all I can say is danner really likes to talk :) but it was great!! Before the end of the summer when I get my DL back If we could hang out again when you have more time? I have a lot more questions. You said they have a dyno at the school do they do tuning also? I have a Polaris RZR with a custom computer to change the fuel maps. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to do a full throttle run on a trail while holding on to a laptop. Lol
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 лет назад
haha he does but everything he says is worth listening to. Time? I never have time for anything anymore :-) We do not do "tuning" at the school. We do have a dyno though and I'm sure we could work something out for you to be able to use it for your needs. Sometime in November probably. Danner wants to get some runs on that thing too.
@JOHNPHUFNAGEL

Yes he seems very smart like you, and I defiantly know about not having time to do anything but as you know life is quick and sometimes you have to make time for yourself before you know it 20 years have gone by and the things that i wanted to do but always said Ill do tomorrow never got done because of not having time or money. So now I try to make time for stuff.. Again i just want to say thank you for everything that you and Jim do!! I have learned so much from you two! Ya November sounds great cant wait!! But if we can do it sooner that would be better what ever works for you to I will make the time. Lol

11:47, sounds like your making the assumption that the customers actions caused the cars bad behavior. One time I was replacing a radiator in my pathfinder, when I finished the power steering pump was whining loudly. I assumed I was the cause of it's bad behavior but the truth was, I didn't make it do anything. The pump's whining was do to its on lack of fluid and not me touching or bumping anything, which I actually did not do. I did not know this until a mechanic came and added fluid and then the pump stopped making noise. I guess you could say it was my fault for not checking the fluid on a truck I had just purchased from my neighbor who was an auto technician for Ford. I wont get into the radiator fluid in the transmission part. That's why replaced the radiator, I was told it caused the coolant to leak into the transmission fluid. I guess I should have checked for that when I purchased a vehicle from my mechanic neighbor? My bad... Again, not my point. May be a good story to tell your students about a 2006 Pathfinder cooling the transmission fluid through the radiator instead of a separate tranny cooler on the 4wd model????

Automotive guys incorrectly use the term "lab scope", in reality that is a deprecated term, used to refer to the old "mainframe" units that were large boxes with the CRT, power supply, and drive circuitry that took removable "plug-ins" for timebase and vertical amp units, or dedicated special plug-ins for spectrum analyzers, logic devices, or what have you. These are no longer made or supported and mostly you see them in hokey car commercials or old movies. Tek has a good .pdf article on using their scopes for CANbus and LIN troubleshooting on their web site. This mostly covers their 5 Series MSO flat panel scope, which is admittedly bulky and nonruggedized for use in a service environment. Fluke makes the more portable ScopeMeter lines but they do not have this type of specialized firmware built in or available. No one makes what you really want-a good ruggedized handheld general purpose oscilloscope with specific support for bus analysis. As cars start requiring real actual electronic expertise to fix and no one not comfortable in a PLC or industrial control environment is going to make a successful living in automotive other than changing oil and tires this is going to have to change. But I somehow think vendors like SnapOn, who are great at making mechanical tools and tool boxes, just don't really get the electronic T&M paradigm-indeed, they abandoned the market for electronic oriented hand tools with their very good Electroset program to vendors like Jensen Tools.
