The price of LG's 55-inch CX OLED TV in the UK has dropped to £1400, which is £100 cheaper than the South Korean brand's 48-inch CX OLED. We explain the reason why based on our understanding of 8.5G substrate sizes at LG Display's Paju and Guangzhou OLED plant using MMG (Multi-Model Glass) technology.

Never seen images as good as this to be honest, absolutely blown away. I'd love to see what red redemption 2 on the pc looks like on this tv in HDR.

I've had a few customers ask why the 48" CX is more than the 55" and i haven't had a good answer for them until now, so thank you! My speculative answer before now was the 48" model's growing demand as a computer monitor (thanks Linus).

It's amazing how cheap 77" OLEDs are now in the U.S. I'm seeing $3699.99 for a 77" CX(equivalent to £2872.39). So we may not Panasonic available but a 77" CX is cheaper than a 55" HZ2000.

R6ex Hey, I live in Sg too! If you did some research, almost all the TVs are twice as ex in Sg than in the US. The Cx costs SG$3126 in amazon and SG$5411 in courts. Nearly twice as ex. The Sony X950H: SG$2040 in amazon and SG$4599 in courts. If you’re looking to buy new TVs, keep a lookout for when Amazon will ship TVs to Singapore, and buy from them. Even including the shipping fee(around SG$600 pre covid), they’re cheaper than Sg. But you’ll have to do your due diligence to check on the voltage levels tho. Some TVs will not support 230V, some support 110-250V.

@Vincent Great informative Video (as always) 👍🏻 Notebooks are IMO a good comparison. If a 13" Notebook has +/- the same specs as the 15" variant, then it would be more expensive. Same CPU power and so on but a smaller form factor results in higher price. Also if a 55" size is much more common nowadays, retailers would probably buy much more 55" TVs then any other size... Distributors usually give quantity discounts.

OLED manufacturing currently uses a gas under high pressure to apply the organic layers to a thin film substrate. I don't think the specifics of the difference between the higher and lower ppi screen manufacturing is publicly known. One could speculate that you need a higher precision for a higher ppi screen surely, so that could mean you need a higher pressure or different and more expensive carrier gas. And quite probably a number of things I'm not even aware of, otherwise I might just as well start producing my own OLED panels lol.
@Lethargo226
@Lethargo226 3 года назад
@@hugevibez Thanks for the input, yes the accuracy needed for higher ppi is probably exponential as ppi increases. But isn't there also the worry that since the pixel pitch is tighter, the increased heat generation will cause the pixels to degrade more quickly?
@jamie_ar

Really interesting to hear the factors that impact the cost of certain panels; it'd be great in the future if you could produce some small documentary-style videos where you maybe even tour some of the fabs and interview some industry folk (once the current pandemic is well and truly over of course!). Looking at a lot of the comments here, I think a lot of people are vastly overestimating the size of the 48" and below demand - outside of "gaming", people don't care for anything below 55" any more.
@alexnovek6480

Thank you for giving such a detailed explanation on this topic. It has been driving me crazy, and I can finally put it to rest. For the last 6 weeks the CX 55 has bounced around between $1499 and $1350 while the CX 48 has remained at $1449 to $1499. The 48 is a better fit for my space, but it hurts my brain to spend more on a smaller screen. This video made it easier. Question for you: when they cut panels from the substrate, are they forced to maintain some sort of fixed ratio or symmetry? Can they for instance cut one 77 or 65 and use the rest of the substrate for 48. Is it just efficiency that dictates what they cut from each piece of mother glass?
@alkerbix

@Takashita_Sukakoki 2 года назад
according to my calculations you could make 25x27 inch panels from this motherglass and if you would rate the motherglass "price" as 6x55 inch OLED tvs (about 6600€). The per price of a monitor would be miniscule 264€ per 27 inch panel. There has to some other factor im not seeing but Vincent might have better insight.

To start, there is little competition in the 48" arena. For anyone wanting a small TV for a den, bedroom, or game room the 48" size is a great fit. And no competition always equals higher prices.
@sacoto98

There are some 49" displays like the 49" Q80t from Samsung. Personally, I am looking out for the lg 48" cx oled but I've also researched some other displays with similar sizes and specs. If I can't get the CX then I'll get something else and the thing is, the CX is the most expensive of them all so if people choose other similar displays they'll end up with similar performances with a much cheaper price. Right now where I live, the Q80t 49" inch is sitting at 999€ and it's probably the most direct competitor to the 48" CX which is sitting at 1599€ and the 55"inch CX that is sitting at 1499€. Only the 48" CX is sitting at full price
