ADHD'ers - if you have grown up thinking that you are just not very smart or that you're not academically inclined I want to share an analogy I heard from Dr. Russel Barkley. I hope it gives you some perspective + hope!

I feel so understood right now... I'd always say i feel like there is a block in my brain, that actually made my head feel physically painful if i push too hard... Exercise has always relieved that tension I'd feel... And lately I've been learning how to code, at first it was really frustrating but it's actually teaching me how to do things in bit sizes instead of trying to do everything all at once... Which i feel is helping build those new pathways... The way i accumulate certificates #smh

Shatters. And I'm left wandering what the actual hek... and ohhh the shame. 😢

Not to mention all the people that tell you while you're growing up that you're so smart and you have so much potential, if only you would apply yourself more, try harder, and pay more attention. It was so disheartening when I WAS TRYING MY HARDEST THE WHOLE TIME!!! Aaaahhh childhood sucked!!

Same here. During my eval, my psych said she wanted to test for ADHD (was testing for ASD), and I remember what most of the comments on the report cards I handed her to read basically said "Audrey is a wonderful addition to her class (grates teeth in non-conforming gneder ID: ugh "her"), and is very bright. She'd get more marks if she put in a little more effort,". Once for photography class, we had a three part assignment: complete three profiles of photographers, and must fulfill all these questions about them... I did one, and the teacher showed it to the class, saying "this profile is the absolute perfect example of how they're supposed to be written. Well done Audrey,". Then after class, she let me know how disappointed she was in me for not completing the other two, said I would have earned full marks if I put effort into finishing the whole assignment, like I didn't blow my PFC to smitherines doing just one.

Please, Caren, do a video or even a series (so we don;'t get overwhelmed). This is the only time I've heard this articulated and it is precisely how I feel. I read something and understand it but if you ask me to tell you, I freeze! Then I lose my confidence of even knowing it to begin with. It's a vicious cycle and so incredibly frustrating! What has made it worse is information OVERLOAD! Technology is a blessing and a curse. Please consider a deeper dive on this topic. Much appreciated, Lisa

I got so good at math and writing growing up but I could never explain why, it almost felt like I was doing the skills through intuition. Like if I was editing someone's essay, I couldn't explain why a paragraph sounded better if the sentences were split up in a certain way, it just read better in my brain, like a musical rhythm. And I was good at writing in different styles, for example in high school when we were tasked to write a monologue from the perspective of a character in Romeo and Juliet, my teacher was impressed with my ability to mimic Shakespeare's style (not comparing me to Shakespeare of course but the fact that I was able to use Old English in a similar way). But I wouldn't be able to explain how to do that, again it just felt intuitive and came with practice. The more I relied on intuition rather than planning it out ahead of time, the better my writing would be, and I would pour over and edit 4-5 times before submitting to make it "perfect." I got 96/97% in English all through middle school and high school with different teachers. It's worse now that I've been out of practice though. And I only got 80s in math in elementary because we also got graded on how well we explained why we did certain steps and I just couldn't do that well, it was frustrating because I was like, I did those steps in that order because it made sense to my brain, okay? 😂 But I got better at explaining math concepts as I taught my friends and others more. The motivation to help someone struggling and trying to organize the information in a way that another person's brain can interpret and understand it forces you to practice those executive functions of planning and execution. And so I finished high school with the highest grade in adanced math. So I think that's the key for people with ADHD, to try to learn something with the intent to teach it.

I have never heard this explained this way by anyone except myself trying to describe the struggle and I’m so grateful you shared. I think the long term effects of constantly not being able to retrieve that knowledge when we know it’s there, has caused me to suffer with the emotional physiology of learned helplessness. I can even recognize that’s what is causing my lack of motivation. It’s so heartbreaking and feels like my brain is speaking 2 different languages and I don’t know how to interpret one for everyone else. This is why I also struggled with selective mutism as a child and even as an adult sometimes the simple act of speaking feels harder than doing a push up at 8 months pregnant.

I feel that on so many levels and have also struggled to come to terms with realising how much time has passed. Best thing you can do is peacefully give yourself the time and space to mourn the person that you could have been. Acknowledge the present moment, focus on self care and then begin to journal a plan to reverse engineer exactly who you want to become, as you've got at least another 50 years ahead of you! 💯

Oh my stars, that would explain a lot. Avid reader since childhood and I always felt I have a large vocab... But most of it is locked behind a chasm of broken neural bridges. Especially when you go through a period of not talking to people for a whole year, because you don't really have contact with the outside world. Man, I struggled for the first couole of months to form a coherent sentence.
