I got the notification for this video today just as I started my break at work (I'm a cashier at a hardware store). my ex (we work in the same store) who I was with only 7 months (and ghosted me) had just walked in with his 8 yr old son to do some shopping. I really cared about the son. my ex ignored me of course, and I him, but his son looked right at me. He gave me the most disapproving look. I waved and smiled and he turned away. it tore me up so bad and I was shaking and had to hide and cry. I felt so stupid for having all of this emotion and I couldn't stop shaking. I felt self hatred and sorrow and disgust towards myself. and I felt stupid for all of my feelings. and then I listened to this video on my break. and it helped me. thank you. I needed to express this.

Thanks for responding to my comment Noah. I think you're honestly one of the luckiest guys on earth to have that shift happen to you. It's strange how some have it and some people don't. I know of another guy called Gary Weber who went through the same type of shift you had. He had been practicing mindfulness and mantra meditation for years but to no avail. One day, he stumbled upon the teachings of Ramana Maharshi, and he started asking himself questions like "who am I?", "where am I?", "what thinks?", and shortly after asking himself these questions, his mind stopped. Another individual who's mind stopped, you probably know him, is Eckhart Tolle. He became suicidal one night and said to himself "I cannot live with myself any longer". When he noticed that statement in his mind, he thought, "That's strange, it sounds like there is 2 of me - me and myself. Which one is real? Who is the self I cannot live with?" After that, he woke up in the morning with his mind permanently silenced. What's interesting is that it sounds like Eckhart accidently asked himself exactly the type of question Ramana would recommend. Ramana would say - "The mind is like a monkey, never still for one second. It is an almost hopeless task to try and quieten it; the best thing to do is to give it a productive employment and not allow it to fritter itself away building endless pictures. Let it concentrate on the thought “Who am I?” When other thoughts arise, one should not pursue them, but should inquire: ‘To whom do they arise?’ It does not matter how many thoughts arise. As each thought arises, one should inquire with diligence, “To whom has this thought arisen?”. The answer that would emerge would be “To me”. One should then enquire, “Who am I?” The thought ‘who am I?’ will destroy all other thoughts, and like the stick used for stirring the burning pyre, will itself in the end get destroyed. Then, there will arise Self-realization".

Thanks for the video brother Noah. I would like to ask if you have heard of IFS? It's a therapy modality which has been of massive help to me. It paints the picture that we are made up of sub-personalities, or 'parts', which have their own feelings, beliefs and thoughts. The key lesson is that each part has positive intent. For instance, a people pleaser part may have developed from the trauma of being rejected as a child. To avoid that pain, you prioritize other people's needs before your own. In the long run, you come to resent your people pleasing ways because you're not confident, living on other people's terms and you don't feel connected to yourself or others ironically. It's easy to criticize yourself for this, but when you understand how or why it serves you, you can completely change the way you relate to yourself and the world. You can integrate that part of yourself to become the beautiful, whole human being you always were. Your teachings in this video really reminded me of IFS and I encourage anyone reading this to look into it. It has changed me for the better when I felt utterly hopeless and confused with life.

@NoahElkrief
@NoahElkrief 2 года назад
You're welcome Meaghan! It might be enough to accept your emotions from a place of love, and it might not be. Sometimes, we need to ask the emotion (our inner child) what's going on from a place of deep care, and then deeply listen to how they feel. Sometimes, we may need to support the child's emotional expression, clear up a false conclusion, give an inherited pattern back to our parents, or just let them know how much love them. Sometimes it's super simple, and sometimes it's not.

Hi Noah, great to see you looking so smiley and chill once again, juat wanted to know what you opinion in breathwork along with Non dual teaching, did you see breath work made a big diffrence for your practices in that area, or what practices do you think are most effective in this to maybe enchace sensitivity and help realise ones true self. Cheers🙏
@NoahElkrief
@NoahElkrief 2 года назад
My main perspective is that everyone must follow their own intuition about what modality feels right for them in a particular moment as I don't believe in rules or hierarchy of healing forms. I found breathwork and nonduality to both be a little helpful and a little hurtful for me. Breathwork was helpful in letting go of some stuff I didn't know was there. But, it also relies on activating the nervous system, which can go against my intention of relaxing my nervous system. Nonduality can support peace on one level, but I found that much of my deep pain, needs, and desires felt ignored when I was around nonduality. I prefer to work on buried emotions and beliefs. But, that's just my preference and what worked for me.

I never understood why as a child I was scared of going to the doctor. Logically, I was thinking "they're here to help me, so why am I afraid ?" Now I can see one reason, being that I felt shame about going to the doctor. As if I was "broken" and I went there to get fixed. The fact that I had bad eyesight and that I could tell the doctor was frustated as we had to determine the right lenses for my eyes. Or the fact that I had lots of allergies when I was a child, and after doing a test it turned out that I was allergic to most of the things they tested on me - cat and dog hair, dust mites, birch trees among other things. So it felt like I was a particularly bad case and that they had to "deal with me". It's never been a huge part of my life, and my allergies have gotten much better. But this came up while watching this video. Thanks for sharing Noah.
@NoahElkrief
@NoahElkrief 2 года назад
You're welcome! That's exactly what I'm talking about. When we don't understand the connection to why we feel an emotion (i.e. fear), we can think there is something wrong with us. But, as soon as we find the connection, we realize it's extremely logical.

If all emotions are logical, then the most logical thing to do is to rationalise the emotion - there are reasons why you feel a certain way at any given time of the day. Breaking down into steps - be aware and accept , identify the characteristics of the space and time when you acquired the said emotion and note your resolution/response to the emotion (helpful to work with a therapist). To move forward is to decide how to respond to your current emotion. The only reason why you kept making the wrong responses is due to the fear of not knowing what is going to happen afterwards. Your previous experience has nothing to do with your decision at the present time. In short, ground yourself to the current space and time and live in the present moment.

Hey Noah, do you have any favourite emotional healer/wellbeing philosophers? Mine are you, Anthony De Mello, Eckhart Tolle, Gary Weber, Albert Ellis, David Burns, Aaron Beck, Alan Watts, Adyashanti and Sam Harris. @NoahElkrief
@NoahElkrief 2 года назад
I actually don't have any favorite healer, teacher, philosophers. I tend to just like working through stuff within myself. So, I prefer modalities over teachers. I have had many bodyworkers who have helped me a lot through craniosacral therapy, acupuncture, myofascial release, breathwork, thai yoga massage, chi nei tsang, and others. I have also been helped by regression therapy, inner child work, rebirthing, spirit guides, internal family systems, authentic relating, and non-violent communication. My tendency is to find something very helpful for a few months, then I no longer resonate with it anymore and move on to the next thing.

Noah, I have a video suggestion. I want to know what you think about narcissists. Do you think they can change? I’ve been watching all three versions of A Christmas Carol, on Disney+. There’s the Mickey’s version, the Muppets’ version, and Jim Carrey’s version. I think Charles Dickens was trying to say there’s always hope. But I’ve also been watching RU-vid videos about Red Pill. All those RU-vidrs say narcissists can’t change. Hopefully one day I’ll get to hear your opinion on that matter.
@NoahElkrief
@NoahElkrief 2 года назад
Hi Jesus, my perspective is that nobody IS a narcissist, some people just have patterns/behaviors that are narcissistic. And my perspective is that every type of pattern, behavior, belief, pain, or trauma can be healed. However, of course, the desire to heal has to come from within each person, and not from outside of them.

@NoahElkrief
@NoahElkrief 2 года назад
Hi Chanpho, I'm sorry that feelings are coming up about hurting yourself. Typically, when we want to hurt ourselves, it's because we feel some sort of shame. When we feel shame, it is not because we are bad in some way, but because we were treated by others at some point in our life in ways that were less than loving. The shame in us deserves our love and deserves to be listened to, seen, and taken care of. I wish you lots of gentleness in attempting this.

@@chanphoieng1650 Hi, I'm sorry for my false assumption. My perspective is that to accept a feeling is not in conflict/contradiction with questioning/healing it. My video about why just allowing feelings often isn't enough could be helpful for you.

I do still offer discount prices for those who need it. I just don't state that on my sessions page anymore because I have been trying to do less 1-on-1 sessions in order to have more time to create courses. Send me an email, and hopefully we can work something out. Noah [at] noahelkrief [dot] com.

Sometimes, as a way to stay safe and avoid pain, we can disconnect from our emotions. This can cause us to feel numb and empty. I would recommend searching videos about how to come out of disassociation, and how to feel/connect to your emotions. I know that experience can be really hard and I'm sorry you're going through it. I hope you can find help.

This is completely wrong!! Automatic negative thoughts are completely illogical and false! A person with a panic attack that feels he’s or she’s going to die or going crazy is having a completely illogical thought so please don’t say things that will effect people negatively before reading enough. Btw I have PHD in Clinical psychology

If you believe that you're going to die or go crazy, it's not illogical at all to feel that way. The thought might be illogical (no evidence that you're going crazy) but if someone hasn't seen that the thought is illogical, and genuinely believes or feels that they're on the verge of a mental breakdown, then it's not surprising or illogical at all to feel scared in that situation, because going crazy could have a major impact on their emotional well-being. I think that's what Noah was getting at in this video. Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis (the fathers of modern psychotherapy) says this in their lectures and writings.

Hi Hind, thanks for your message. I hear you, and I really appreciate that you want to protect people from false information that could hurt people. I imagine that you're a really caring person. Regarding your message, I completely agree with you. Every thought that creates pain is illogical and false. I published a book 10 years ago that breaks down how to disbelieve many of our false negative thoughts. However, what I'm sharing in this video is something very different. The essence of what I'm saying in this video could be described as "all emotions have a source that is logical". If we have a panic attack in a situation that is safe, we are clearly not responding logically to the situation in the present moment. However, there is a logical reason why we have this response. Something about the current situation reminds our system of a time when we were in danger. Thank you for your care Hind.

@@darkmana1000 No dear Beck and Ellis addressed cognitive distortions throughout their career and as a result their impact on humans emotions, I’m not against a word of what Noah is saying in this video I’m against the title 🙏🏼😊

@@NoahElkrief thank you Noah I really enjoyed your very informative video and totally understand that you are trying to link association or conditioning to emotions to validate them however I’m totally against the title as the title itself could create a form of anxiety to people with anxiety / panic disorder plus I don’t find it very relative to the video itself. I apologize but this is my opinion 🙏🏼😊

I understand what you mean Hind. The title could easily be misunderstood and doesn't exactly describe what I'm talking about in the video. I just like the simplicity and directness of the title, and I hope that any misunderstanding from the title can be cleared up by watching the video. Your opinion is very welcome here.
