As a former athlete myself, I think a lot of it comes down to having a goal in mind/something to train for. From elementary to college, you’re constantly working towards the next thing: playing time, playoffs, combine, D1 scholarship, whatever. Once your playing days are over and you have nothing to train for, it eventually starts to feel like “what’s even the point?” You know it’s important to stay in shape, but it’s tough to have the same motivation you once did. You’re now by yourself, no teammates, no big dreams to chase. This is further compounded by the fact that most of us are working jobs we barely tolerate. I would tell this guy that you’re NEVER going to be motivated 24/7. I have my high and low days but I’ve managed to stay in shape because I suck it up and have recognized that those glory days are over, not coming back. Set new goals and develop new hobbies to get better at

@@greenAbbotnot necessarily. Think of it like brushing your teeth. Most people have no motivation to brush teeth because it’s just a habit you do every morning and evening. Any activity becomes a habit once you do it enough times, you do it without even thinking. Another example is I have morning chores (sweeping, tidying up, cleaning, making bed, laundry, walking dog, etc) that I absolutely hate and have no motivation for. But I’ve done it consistently for past 2 months and now it’s a habit to just do at the start of my day and I don’t even think about it anymore

Motivation will not get you there! You make a choice everyday and stay consistent. Working out doesn’t make you lose fat. More activity helps increase how much you burn, but don’t workout to lose weight. You eat less than your burn to lose fat. 80-90% of what you want for “fat loss” is food related. Change your food intake, get the results. 1 hour in the gym is easy. The other 23 hours of your day is much much much harder. John hits the head on the psychological topics. You need to feel like you’re worth it. It’s just as important if not more important than the daily discipline of the food and movement. You need to be worth the investment in yourself first.

Motivation is fleeting. And you can’t hate yourself into treating yourself better. You gotta make it part of who you are and how to treat yourself. As a personal trainer, the clients who were most successful in regaining their health were the ones who made slow steps to change their lifestyle and also went to counseling to help adjust their mindset Fat is a hormonally active organ in a sense and an excess of adipose can contribute to psychological complications like depression.

I know we here in the comments section are just part of the audience, and most of us are not professionally trained in counseling. But I’d love to offer my own testimony in case it could help! I’ve never been super athletic (still not a high-level athlete🙂), but I lived with a friend who loved running. She kept inviting me to run with her, and eventually I relented…and hated the running but loved the feeling of accomplishing something good for my body and spending time with my friend! My mental health improved drastically, and I felt better about my body. That led me to wanting to take care of my body so I could enable myself to do more fun things in the future, which led to starting rock climbing and making a push to eat things that nourish my body. I wanted to equip my muscles, heart, lungs, etc. to be able to take on harder challenges. Am I buff or super lean? No. But am I stronger, healthier, and enjoying life more than I did before? Absolutely! Loving myself and putting my health before my gut-craving for unhealthy food and sitting around motionless helped a ton! I hope something in this post can help you! Short summary: Keep the end goal in mind: you want to nourish and take care of your body, strengthening it for the challenge ahead. Shame is not sustainable in health. Instead, love yourself enough to fight for your health. You will slip up from time-to-time, but that does not mean you failed. Just that you are human. 🙂 Wishing you all the best!!!

He needs to move on from the “high school” mindset. You were a child back then and in a different stage of your life developmentally. You were basically a completely different person. All you needed back then was some attention from your parents/coach and you were over the moon and felt like you could do anything. Those childlike motivations won’t work on adults, he needs to focus on all of the things that he is missing out on in his life. Dr.John hit the nail on the head.

Caller sounded like he was more motivated in high school because of male camaraderie/team mindset than seeking approval from parents or coach. He didn't want to let his team down, so he pushed himself to make it happen for the team. There is not nearly enough discussion/emphasis on males' need for male friendship/camaraderie, this is root cause of male loneliness & depression. Women are innately attracted to males that have strong male friendships, so being friendless or trying to be a lone wolf can result in difficulty attracting female attention. Question if his current male friendships are really that strong, or if their activities are basically low-energy like playing video games instead of shooting a few hoops or playing tennis? Since his BMI is "off the charts", he needs to get specific instructions from his physician what/how much physical activity is actually safe for him to do at this time. He also needs to get a specific diet from his physician based on his personal test results, not just the latest fad diet. Most difficult part will be transitioning on friendships; there are likely friends he needs to drop along his journey, while cultivating new friendships that also engage in a healthy lifestyle.

Weight loss robs me of a lot of mental energy and it’s a financial burden. I’ve spent thousands tying new things throughout my lifetime. I’m 5’1 and now 197 I’m 48 and in peri-menopause and I am full of food anxiety. If I eat this then … should I do keto. Low carb. Whole food. If I eat this will …. I pray and ask God to lead me but I feel he has been quiet and I just feel at a loss. It’s not about losing weight for me now but about being healthy. Of course if I could lose:) How to be healthy? What is that anymore? So many people saying opposite things. :(. It’s extremely overwhelming and defeating.

Almost thorough this, but he sounds depressed. He's not motivated or feeling it because the days all blend together and I don't think he's happy. I'm glad John is trying to give him some of a push but it's not what he's eating, it's that he doesn't care.

My thoughts exactly here. He sounds depressed - lives alone, socially isolates but has guy friends he hangs with often. Doesn’t ring true. I have been there and as my depression deepened and my weight spiraled, I pulled away from social outings-didn’t want anyone seeing the damage I’d done. I hope that this young man takes advantage of all the tools and advice that Dr. John is giving. Takes a lot to turn your life around- I did it (down 130+ lbs), so can he. ❤

@@Jillygirl-yn9to Everyone once in a while, John seems "off". He takes so many calls and emails, so not criticizing. I think he didn't read this guy right. He doesn't meet friends weekly and joke etc. He said yes, to just about everything he said. I get it, John would only tell him to "find friends". It's not his job probably, although he didn't discuss it, he's unhappy and food is comfort. I've been there and been back. I hope he uses the stuff John sent but he wont workout if outside things don't change. Maybe the invitation to call back will help.

It gets a lot harder to find the motivation when someone gets really overweight/eating poorly and out of exercise routine of any kind. A lot of those folks get pretty depressed and getting started is the hardest part! But it's a choice!! It's possible though - i recommend cleaning up the diet first and foremost, then starting with a lower impact exercise that you know you'll stick with/that's at least somewhat enjoyable.

Thank you. I'm struggling to get back on track with my weight and this was very helpful. Tonight, I'm going to look in the mirror and try saying that I love me. That's going to be hard and I know I'm a good person and try to make the world a better place, but I'm no good at self care. You touched on some things going on in my life that aren't right. I'm not sure what to do about them. It's not easy to start a new career when I'm single and help support my mom. Plus just rearrange my life. For example, It's 8pm, I'm still at my desk trying to wrap something up, missing church and didn't go do an errand I was supposed to do before church. Let alone, squeeze a workout in. Diet and workout knowledge is the easy part. Emplementing it constantly is the hard part. It's even harder when so many other things are out of wack. Doesn't mean that I don't try, like I went for a walk today over lunch, and ate what's in my diet plan, but yesterday, I messed up. Then stayed awake until 3am only got 4hrs of sleep. So, I'm surprised, I was able to stay on track today. Because usually, lack of sleep leads me to over eat the next day just to stay awake.

Get most/all of those unhealthy snacks out of the house. Find better alternatives that still have a little fat/crunch to satisfy cravings. Learn that it’s ok to be a little hungry as long as you’re not getting dizzy. Drink water, tea, and coffee, and cut out drinks with added sugar. Try a meal that features veggies, and see if it makes you feel a little better than greasy noodles/a burger.

Your heart is in the right place, but I doubt this caller can even summon the discipline it will take to open the app.

I don’t understand this motivation/discipine separation at all. Obviously discipline is crucial, but SOMETHING makes you actually do the stuff you say you want to do. “I keep showing up for my kids” IS my motivation.
@champabay4746
@champabay4746 6 месяцев назад
Discipline is the action, motivation is the reason behind it. What may start as motivation eventually turns into disciplined action that does not require motivation anymore. You just do it. Example of discipline…”I wake up at 4:30am everyday” example Of motivation. “I wake up at 4:30am because I love the mornings”

And furthermore your “motivation” being your kids could one day disappear. I would never wish that on you but that is why building discipline is so much more important then having a lot of motivation

Sorry to break it to you but there is no other way other than eat less and work out. You already know what to do. Stop looking for a quick fix and start putting effort and discipline to your life.

Why did John miss that? Dont' shame him but he's too down to have a social network like John does. You can't just find friends like that. I'm 60 and it's difficult at any age. I see it with my 30 year old daughters too. People move, pass on, get married and have less time.

I guess it doesn't matter all that much, but it was a bit hard to tell if that caller was like 100 pounds over weight or maybe just got a little chubby as of late. I got the impression it wasn't as bad as he was making it out to be. I bet he loses the weight. Caller seemed like a sweet guy. Good luck to him.

Is it just me or is anyone else bothered by the "W" in the word "show" in the logo in the background. It looks an awful lot like the hand devil/baphomet symbol. And the colors red, black and white which are known satanic colors for blood rituals. Just a coincidence? We see an awful lot of this occult/ demonic symbolism these days.

@@ethan4048Agreed that's why I do "mostly carnivore". I eat a lot of eggs and ground beef. But sometimes we go out to dinner and I just eat whatever looks good. Then I don't feel so good for a while. Reinforces the carnivore stuff.
@Loljjkb

Yes carnivore diet works if you regularly eat meat products and don’t care for sweets and vegetables. It all comes down to calories you put in versus calories you expend
