I remember when Asmon was first getting so pissed off about Micro-Transactions, he would tell his viewers that when anyone saw a person with a store mount, do the command /spit on them. Blizzard got so upset that they took out the command from the game. LOL

Not sure about 2004 and 2005 but I was able to digitally purchase WoW in 2006, I never had the original box or physical discs.

One big aspect of corporate profits that this video fails to mention is Customer Retention. Company's want to keep their customers they will continue to make things for the classic players to keep them paying their subs. It might not be as much stuff or as many things as Retail because that side is more profitable but they will never not want to keep the players that stay on the classic side of the game.

Private servers have proven that there is an interest in WOW Classic. Sites like Turtle WOW, Ascension, And the upcoming Project Epoch. I've been liking Turtle WOW myself. About as close to a Classic + we probably ever gonna get. Blizzard just not gonna do it.

imagine if Netflix complained it wasn't profitable enough to get new movies or shows on the platform because your not buying the special features and directors interview after you watch a movie then proceeded to up the price and ask the community what we should spend all of their new money on, more special features or more directors opinions? imagine how stupid blizzard is to say, HEY we invested all this money into micro transactions & social media instead of making content and now the game costs X amount and X amount is too much now that we cant make new content Season of discovery is the equivalent of Netflix using AI to impose the characters of the big bang theory onto a "classic" like Friends and saying there is no way we could make new episodes, it costs way too much

Classic is into Cataclysm now. It's doing just fine.

Subscription should be more than enough, if it isn't, it's a cost structure, or corporate structure problem.

I lived in East Asia for the release of Wrath, Cata, Mist, WoD, & Legion...They do not have to purchase the game in China or Korea. The game is download only and the only fee is a monthly sub.

Another way to look at Classic WoW, is that it gets people in the door as Blizzard customers again. Sure you only need a sub, but just that sub you that doesn't get you real access to retail, you still have to buy that expansion. Also it has helped them when retail was bleeding players during Shadowlands.

SoD was only made to lessen the gap between "classic" and retail. To draw people into retail.

I was really looking forward to Ashes of Creation and then they added a cash shop in ALPHA. We will never get any decent MMO, let alone a great version of WoW while this monetization is the focus.

I agree on the problem, that leveling isn't exactly fun and that the level boost isn't a real solution, but I want to point out that the Mists of Pandaria remix is a really fun event and opportunity to level a toon.

4:25 I remember once or twice way back in the day buying game time for my wow buddy turned arena partner/best friend/brother when he needed it for one reason or another. no Matter what that cost was at the time or no matter what my ability at the time to afford it was, it was worth it vs not playing with my buddy.

another reason so many new micro transaction in the shop is so many players, myself included can easily make enough gold to buy a token and play the month for free. I havent bought a sub for maybe 6 months. and no boosts, or shop stuff so no revenue from me for 6 months. and how many are doing this?

The problem is blizzard doubles down on the mtx always. Osrs makes it work somehow, granted it does have a version of the wow token. However it also is the most popular version of that game, but has continued development dictated by community voting. I could see that working for classic, maybe

Cataclysm spoiled my WoW experience and I eventually stopped playing but I saw a YT video recently that sparked my interest so I came back to play classic. HOWEVER, I was assigned to a 'Hardcore' server (and knew nothing about Hardcore so when I couldn't resurrect I thought it was a bug and raised a ticket). Eventually went to another server and then discovered that I also can't use auction house or mail because there are limitations on new accounts LOL. They really know how to spoil the fun. Right now I think I may cancel my sub.

Monetization is least from classic problems, game didnt changed a bit after they added token/mounts. Biggest thing for me is, there is no Gms atm to ban bots and not enoght staff to fix and even more so to develop the game + damn awfull toxic minmaxing/loging community that taking all fun from the game. I mean after transfer from Firemaw to Gehennas, ive got in to 2x awfull raids in row, and got awfull logs cz of that, i was forced to damn change name to get invites in raids lol.

Heirlooms we're the start of the end for me...they focused on end game rather than feel an accomplishment when you get to top lvl..not running in killing 10 at a time be cause you have those items.

By not giving their subscribers the fresh realm wont ppl go back to private servers? Agreed with SoD too i felt like of all the options to go they went down the drain path.

For WOW2 i wish they would do a similar monetization like path of exile. Its by far the most advanced and best system i know. Skins, Pets, Mounts which each new patch where you buy packages of 30-500$. Next big thing is bags - just give a moderate bag in the game for free (which makes it still playable) and have a advanced bag/bank system behind 30$ or smth. There is also the hideout where you can buy microtransactions for. Nothing beside maybe the bags rly make it pay to win. POE is doing this while being completely for free. I believe, if in WoW2 youd also have to pay the game itself AND the monthly subscription they would make a fortune without fucking up the playerbase too hard

all i can say considering i am paying for cataclysm classic i'm very disapointed with their services Even when there's people buying lvl 80 boosts very often and that there's more micro transmissions then ever before.

Buying gold back in original Vanilla/TBC was looked upon as dirty, and you would be labeled a cheater by your friends, classmates and who else you played with.

Nothing that changes the base of the game. Cosmetics are fine, mounts are fine, hearthstones fine. all that shit that doesn't affect another player or give you a leg up on another player is perfectly fine I couldn't care less because I'm never going to waste my money on that. But anything that makes the game easier, or gives people an unfair advantage or makes their time more valuable while playing than mine is a no no and where I draw the line.

They must have some numbers for the subscriptions, right? I for one came back solely for SoD, and I haven't played any other game mode since launch of SoD. I hope this is logged somewhere for Blizzard to see? I will not play Cata or any other game mode, nor will I will be buying War Within to play that, I'm to fed up with modern WoW. As mentioned, I only came back for SoD, and I love it so far.

Classic era had such a good pop before SoD trust blizzard to take a good thing and ruin it. 🤣

What he doesn't realize, is that wow classic doesn't take development, or creation, it already exists. Not only does it already exists, they just have to make tweaks to this and that, change this and that. SoD is a seperate of the classic releases, it's a part of the season of blah blah releases. And all of that is released in between the retail expansions lol. They use to only get paid off subs, the store, and a surge of returning players every 2 years, now they have people subscribed all year long for multiple versions of the game they already released. Anything they make from classic, is extra lol, of course it's worth developing and investing time into, it's very little work with nothing but profits lol.

Eh, bdo is actually not a very good example of "new content every week" - Yeah, they shit out a patch every week. Most of the time the weekly "update" is some limited time event that we've had before in a similiar form. If you play for half a year, you've seen most of the events and they kinda just cycle.

Lets be honest here. We live in a world where things costs money. Servers, developers, light, gas.. i understand that companies need to make money from their games to pay the bills. But a Big mistake for a game, IS to allow microtransactions, which allows you to fast or to win. Yes, you can do a lot of money, at the cost of slowly killing It.

Not gonna lie. i really don't miss a lot of things out of classic wow. I did play back in the day but it was on and off and i didn't really start raiding till TBC. So somethings I understand why people miss classic but majority of it really, is the friends they made on the way of the game really. Not the game entirely. It will never go back the way you want it to be, cause it's boring asf and only those private servers are doing something a bit "unique" take on it but even that is sullying the game in a sense and it's not full classic. So personally? I don't miss classic what so ever. Some of the stuff in the system was just... Bad really and I rather play retail then classic. Somethings I do miss from classic but majority of it I don't really unless they improve upon the system of it on the classic version. Not saying retail is perfect or w/e, it's just better in other aspects where I wish classic had. People had time back then, people now don't have a lot of time.

The problem with skins is that blizzard gets greedy. Look at Diablo4, when you look at the base armor you get from just playing the game, it is actually lame compared to the cash shop skins or the season rewards. The deviate delight movement sounds nice, but it’s my understanding that we will be in a cross realm BG situation. So on whitemane era there are a lot of rank14 and full BiS naxx geared players. I’ve subbed 2 accounts for SOD specifically. I hope phase4 is good and beyond. I truly think if they put out a fully flushed out classic+ they can ask for 40-60$ USD. And if it was good I think people would be happy with that. Maybe not though

Blizzard needs to sell the rights to wow classic to an indy developer who can make money out of the game with much MUCH smaller overheads and more love and dedication to the old school vibes. There is no point in the future where I can see blizzard/Microsoft properly creating a decent game. It's clear they give absolutely 0 shits about classic +. Sod is utterly trash currently and the p4 updated look to me to be a very small bandaid. Where is the "new" content. It's Just badly created rehashed garbage

imagine asmon and 100 other streamers / wow lovers just buying out the rights for world of warcraft ... than they could hire a lot of developers (also old once who left blizzard) and work on classic plus ... what a great game we could get 😍😍😍 no need for ingame stores, no micro-transactions, no pay to win ... only subs to keep the game alive and the devs paid

I don't think that advertising costs are talked about enough, Before social media you running costs were a lot smaller, people who made game content didn't have to be anything but game devs, now you have to run social media and be an expert on everything just because the car can have heated seats (micro transactions) doesn't mean we need them or want to pay for them at the expense of other more valuable traits like a car that doesn't break down how does Starcraft 2 still operate? no subscription & its also now free since like 2016? no real cash shop oh yeah thats right there isnt some wanker dev wanting a big pay check and no social media to blow the budget on, you hire cheap content creators and remove the rubbish that isnt good enough because its cheap instead of banking all your money on 1 production that might fail

Yes Blizzard is greedy and have been for years. But still to this day wow offers me something no other game can, and that is worth something to me. For the time being I'll continue to play, just not the amount that I used to :)

Its true bot better Customer but thats only true if the bot is making money. If people quit cause of too many bots the bots wont have any Customers there hence the game is dead/will die. You cant run a game just on BOTs, BOTs are there because there is a demand for something and the people who runs the bots only cares for the money not the game it self.

Well that's just stupidity, just by reading the title. We should happy that for ONCE blizzard acknowledge that retail ain't rly working and fresh classic has been done over and over again. They are now and very boldly trying to make the "perfect wow" which is Sod, they do small updates on things at least every 3 days since sod was released. They try out mew things, they try to mix classic wow. And trying to see what fits and works. Yes not everything about SOD is perfect, but they are putting in so much time to do the "perfect version of wow" and for 90% of sod so far I've had fun. Will they implement flying mounts? Big no, will they implement looking for raid? No. Are they making the end game vanilla abit harder now by trying hc mode on Molten core? Yes! And u know what ive nevered played a single retail expansion for more then 2 months. But classic on all pservers for the last 10 years. We are test rabbits atm, and our opinion matters more to them now then ever. People need to realize that getting back the feeling of wow in 2005 with windows 2000, laggy computers and no questie addon were everything feels new and amazing isnt EVER going tp happen. Today we have sick computers, we have every little thing about every expansion written on 100+ websites, people are more skilled, and why is that? Because the game is OLD. And we are now in 2024 and they are actually trying to make the perfect classic + (sod) mixed with some good parts of retail versions. And how the f*ck are they gonna do that without being able to try out new things? YES some will suck, and if the major part playing the game don't like them they will acknowledge that and change it. Sod is the only way to save world of warcraft and so far they have mostly made good small changes. Did they realise we wanted new raids and dungs? YES and u know what? It's now comming in p4. Jesus christ sod is gonna have 10-15 phases at least. Until they have the perfect game that can progress in a way that most of us want. Osrs is still getting meaningful updates after 20 years, players still keeping their accounts up to date. Classic wow won't have that legacy due it it's development. Sorry
