All of my fondest memories stem from the classic trilogy. I have plenty of memories with everything Dreamcast and beyond, but I'd be fooling myself into saying it was all good. I just wish some people would understand that when I don't like something they like, I'm not fucking attacking them personally, which I've run into PLENTY of times when discussing Sonic games. I don't enjoy Mech Shooting. I don't enjoy Tresure Hunting. I don't enjoy On-Rails Motion Controlled poppycock. I don't judge those that do, because they find something to like that I don't, and I respect that. I'm still a fan today because I know Sonic can still be good. Colors and Generations proved that.
Dude I've said this plenty of times, but you have the most perfect outlook on the Sonic series. No stupid logic or arguments, just common sense. Words can't describe how much I love this video. With all these forced "reviewers" on RU-vid nowadays, it's super refreshing to hear someone that actually knows how to address points without feeling the need to meet a standard. There are hardly any Sonic "fans" on the internet, just wannabe critics. People feel the need to exaggerate Boom and Sonic's downfall but just come off sounding naive. Some of my friends even annoy me with that stuff. Like you said, you learn this stuff as you grow and meet others online (I often regret debating people). I never really understand why people consider themselves fans if they hate on stupidest stuff in the series. It's difficult for me to even say this without people labeling me an "optimistic Sonic fanboy." So glad this video exists because it highlights everything I enjoyed about your series. Back around 2011, I had finally found someone who knew what they were talking about with the classics and the Dreamcast era, and someone who acknowledged the actual bad of the series. I can't really say why I love Sonic simply because our perspectives are almost identical (sans Advance 3, I love it lol), but I can only hope more people understand where you were coming from with the video and don't take it as "oh he's just a nostalgia/Adventure fanboy" (idiots I know). Sorry for the long comment, but it's personalities like you who make this stuff possible for me. Amazing work man.
As a subscriber and fan to both your channels I have to say that both of you do a great job of keeping a realistic and balanced outlook. The sonic fan base is quite terrible and annoying, a prime example being hating when Sega rushes games, but whining and complaining in the comments and forums when there is no release date for a game, news, trailers, etc. Not to mention everyone thinks they're a marketing major or game designer. I like sonic because of the gameplay and some of the characters. I enjoy most the stories, have interest in good games and little interest in bad games. I have a life outside of one gaming franchise and enjoy plenty of other games and genres where I can enjoy myself. Glad to hear you're a fan as well because I totally agree. Also keep up the good work with your videos!
I agree with both yours and Clements views on this series. You acknowledge that most haters waaaay over exaggerate the bad of the series and undermine the much, much good that it has to offer. However, you guys give the bad the critique that it deserves and it has opened my eyes to the same. Thank you both for being sensible people on the internet lol
InsaneEnergy Sonic 2 - cheap enemies placement at times. Sonic 3 & Knuckles - some levels can drag on longer than it needs, like lava reef or night carnival. See? They not perfect, damn good, but not perfect.
Glad I got around to watching this. Excellent video Clement. I've been a fan of Sonic since the original. He's what convinced me to get a Genesis over a Super Nintendo. And it helped broaden my horizons as a fan of games. I didn't come back to the series though until Sonic and the Secret Rings which I actually enjoyed! While the motion controls could be finicky and the repetitious missions could certainly get old, it showed me a Sonic that was having fun! So I've gone back and played as many Sonic games as I could. And thank goodness for that. I like Unleashed, I love Colors, Generations is my favorite 3D Sonic. Hell, Lost World has a TON of potential as a concept. Sonic encapsulates a specific portion of my childhood that I can just sit back and enjoy. Thank you for constantly constantly showing why Sonic is not a dead character. I cannot wait for his next game.
Well well, what a mighty suprise! Hello GameXplain! you were the only reason I beat super mario bros 2 100% :P and some others aswell, now I'm just rambling, but still is a nice suprise to see you on a channel I thought only me and a phew others knew about. :P
+GameXplain Dear God, I congratulate you for enjoying Secret Rings. I'd gotten it bundled with Sonic Colors, and wanted to have fun with it, but hit a wall in the first stage of the game because it was completely unclear on how to progress, and the controls wore down my patience fast.
Whenever I feel down about the Sonic fanbase I watch this video. It reminds me of, well, why *I* like Sonic. Fun fact: Sonic Heroes is the game that basically made me a gamer.
Sonic helped me to make my first friends. Way back when I was just a quiet awkward kid who liked to read and draw. I was always getting made fun of because I was "ugly" or "black" or "poor" or "weird". I always had to eat lunch or play alone. But when I started reading Sonic comics and drawing Sonic characters, kids saw that I was talented and that we had something in common. I'm almost crying typing this shit out, yo. Fuck the haters. Sonic helped to make me the person I am today.
+Brea Jay I think I can relate somewhat. Sonic was the gateway for me to meet my first ever true friends as well when I was a kid. I mean... Technically Pokemon was but Sonic was the cement and I learned about Sonic Adventure 2 from my first friend when he saw I was playing Sonic Advance. Those were some good times. I remember that we'd pretend to be our favorite characters haha. Me: Knuckles, Sonic Brother: Tails Friend 1: Shadow Friend 2: Rouge Haha silly but never boring lol
Thank you SO much for this video, Clement. After all the nonsense this fandom has gone through over the past year, we all *needed* this video. When Sonic Boom: The Rise of Lyric came out last year, *you and I* were the *only* ones I knew of who had the balls to post a review saying that Rise of Lyric *really was not* the worst Sonic game ever; as long as Sonic 06, Shadow, and Secret Rings still exist, it never will be. Also, I 100% agree with everything you said about Sonic Adventure 2. Why am I a Sonic fan? Because, like you, I enjoy the good games when they come, and I've chosen not to be so picky about stuff that doesn't matter. Before I discovered your channel, I just took for granted what all the other popular, classic purist SonicTubers were saying (I'm thinking of one in particular): "3D Sonic games couldn't be good (besides Colors and Generations), Adventure 2 wasn't as good as 1, Heroes and Lost World suck, etc." But then I saw your review of Sonic 06, which remains my favorite review on the internet. That video was of great inspiration to how I make my own content even today. Then I watched all of your Let's Plays on Mega Man and Sonic and learned that it was OKAY to like Adventure 1, 2, and Heroes, or Unleashed and Black Knight. You taught me that evaluating games doesn't always have to be about exaggerating or hyperfocusing on the bad, or even the little flaws that don't really matter when you think about it. You taught me to try to enjoy the games for what they are, rather than whining about what they aren't. Your quest to defend the Sonic games that are worth defending and to stand up to all the negativity is what inspired me to make my own Sonic videos. You inspired me to stand up to the fanbase armageddon that ensued after the release of Sonic Boom: The Rise of Lyric, and explain why the game really was not the worst thing ever. You inspired me to speak out about how the Classic Sonic titles really aren't the immaculately perfect masterpieces that some older fans like to claim they are whilst they nitpick newer entries in the series. Within the next few months, I'm going to be challenging some of the assumptions people have been making about the Dreamcast Era, particularly with Adventure 2 and Heroes. Even though I will never be as popular or highly-viewed as some of the SonicTubers out there, I have been trying my best to make a difference the best way I can the way you've inspired me to. For all your years of defending Sonic's quality standard, for all the excellent playthroughs, and for standing up against all the nitpicky reviewers that refuse to accept Sonic for what he is, I thank you. Thank you, Clement. Thank you for doing what you do for the Sonic fanbase.
The people that treat ClementJ64 like shit for most of his opinions are chauvanists that are just jealous that they can't even be bothered to be even half as successful and clever as he turned out to be.
Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & K, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes,Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colours, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, Sega All Stars Racing, the Comics, the TV shows. Did we just forget these existed. Sure there have been bad Sonic games, but it doesn't erase all the good quality Sonic media. If you don't like the bad games, don't talk about them and go play the good ones.
This video brought tears toy eyes. Along with all the positive response. Sonic was NEVER as bad as people made it out to be. Thank you Clement for reminding us that Sonic will always be great.
I truly have returned to the best channel on youtube, I agree, most people who hate sonic usually played sonic 06 as their last game, all because sonic 06 happened some people never found enough will power to come back to it, good thing I played sonic colors before sonic 06, other wise I might have done the same, or at least had a chance of doing the same.
This was a great trip down memory lane, Clement. Not just the games themselves, but the multitude of playthroughs you've made that so many of these gameplay clips originate from. I hope you don't mind, but I will have something of a response to some of the things you said when I make my re-review of Sonic Adventure 2.
+NickonAquaMagna Yay! Nickon! You Clement and SomecallmeJohnny. are my favorite sonic... -tubers? Is that a phrase? regardless looking forward to that re-review! ;)
Everyone hates on Sonic because everyone else does it anyway. They only hear about the bad games when they get bad reviews or stupid memes, not the good ones when they get good reviews. Its easy to be one of those people that goes with what the bulk of the gaming community claims. Stay positive Sonic fans. He will come back!! Great review by the way Clement.
Dude, I can't tell you enough how much I respect you. Instead of following the flock of sheep and bashing every Sonic game out there and insulting the fans, you go out of your way to inject some much needed positivity into this community and show off the good games of this franchise. We need more people like you. AND I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS. Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are freaking great games that don't deserve the hate. Yes, the HD and PC versions of these games are garbage, but the Game Cube and Dream Cast versions are definitely worth your time. With Sonic Adventure being my all-time favorite platformer, and just one of my favorite games ever made. Yes, I like Sonic Adventure MUCH more than the likes of Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, etc. Sue me.
+Sam Behrman Milkman. Milkman. I say milkman! And there's milk to be delivered. Milkman, there's no need to feel down. I say milkman, get your feet off the ground. You know what Sonic is to me? The perfect example of taking risks. Almost no sonic game in existence has ever played it safe. The franchise is always trying to innovate and recreate itself to stay fresh, not just because other franchises are doing it, but the exact opposite. From these risks, we've gotten a long line of games, a lovable cast of characters, a comic book that is now on a recent consistency of quality, and multiple TV shows. Not to mention a hilarious and unorthodox official twitter account. I love this video, I love Sonic the Hedgehog, and thanks go to Clement for making me relive all these great memories.
Thank you, Clement! Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU! It's very rare to see a Sonic fan expressing positivity about the series nowadays and I love you for it and I 100% agree with you. People need to stop whining and complaining about how "Sonic is dead" and running these stupid Sonic Boom "jokes" to the ground (newsflash guys: they never were funny even when RoL came out) because then I don't see "Sonic fans" but I see a bunch of immature assholes that probably were never truly fans to begin with. If you loved the Classic games but don't like the 3D ones then stop whining and go play these games you love so much. Personally, I don't care about automated sections, green eyes, uncurling, bounce pads or physics. I play games to have fun and the reason why I'm still a Sonic fan is because these games are very fun and, most importantly, they have personality. Yes, this series had it's ups and downs (and all arounds) but what series doesn't? Sonic isn't perfect and there is a bunch of bad games but why focus on the bad games when there is still good Sonic games you could talk about? I know Sonic can still be good, Colours and Generations proved it and Lost World, while it wasn't as good as these two games, was still perfectly fine. Hell, even a bad game like Rise of Lyric (who was a spinoff game made by an other company than Sonic Team BTW) had some good ideas that just got buried under a mountain of shit. This is why I'm still and probably forever will be a Sonic fan: This series still has potential for good games and now that SEGA has said that they're sorry for all the shit they've put the fans through these last 10 years and what to gain back their trust, I'm curious to see what they'll come up with for Sonic's 25th birthday (God, I feel old!).
Infinite Zero Pffft! Like I give a crap! I've got my opinions and I don't mind if they don't agree with them. We can even discuss about our opinions if they want as long as they have real arguments and can make constructive criticism (which I highly doubt 85% of this fanbase can because they're too busy whining about green eyes and blue arms, having their nostalgia goggles superglued to their eyes or making unfunny "Sanic Bam" jokes).
Don't care who thinks Sonic Adventure 2 is overrated, its a gem in my eyes. Love the gameplay, the characters, the stages, sure finding pieces of the master emerald could frustrate me. But I just enjoyed it a lot, and probably played it at least 3 or 4, maybe 5 times in my life, the music always got me hyped and same for Sonic Heroes. And yes, I love Sonic Colors too!
As an non-Sonic fan, I can appreciate what the series is all about & I had played both the good & the bad or just average games. Even if I'm not an Sonic fananic, I do support the series & hopefully will get something good for the blue blur.
I'm 11 minutes in, and seeing stuff like Sonic 2, and the thoughts of childhood, brings back mass amounts of memories. I've been a Sonic fan for nearly 20 years. My first video game was Sonic 2 for the Sega Master System... My God, did it kick my ass. My after school club (1998 to maybe 2000, maybe 2001) had a Sega Mega Drive, so I had Sonic 1 and 2 to enjoy, not to mention the frequent Sonic comic. Sonic 2 became my favourite 2D Game, and it still is my favourite, to this day. I downloaded it on Xbox Live a few weeks ago, and I had the time of my life. Then I began to get new consoles... Do I want a Sega Dreamcast... Nope, my mother got me a Nintendo 64. Golf, Pokemon, Super Mario 64... Eh, Pokemon held me over for now... But I was drifting away from Sonic. For the next few years, after the school got rid of the Sega Mega Drive, I only had 2 Sonic games to hold me: Sonic R, and Sonic 3D Blast, both for the PC... Oh boy. Sonic 3D, right off the bat, I hated. I thought the game looked nice, but I couldn't get into the gameplay style, with the isometric platforming. Sonic R... Honestly, I had a really fun time as a kid. It probably doesn't hold up with me today, but as a 7+ Year old, I was content with that game. Played the hell out of it. Sonic Heroes came into my life when I got a Nintendo GameCube.... I didn't play that one that much. It's not that I didn't like the game, I just sucked at it.... You don't hear that from Sonic fans that much. That was about it for Sonic.... Until RU-vid came into my life, around 2006. I begin reliving the days of my youth with various Sonic LPs, beginning with a guy known as Cybershell. Around 2008, I began to browse the net, and what do I see? They're making a new game called Sonic Unleashed? This sounds awesome... I had no idea about Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic 06, and clearly I had gone braindead on Sonic Heroes, because I was amazed they were still making Sonic games. I began watching BrainScratchComms, but at the time, they had only done the first 3 games... Their LP of Sonic 06 sucks, due to the crappy quality! Then in 2010, I'm browsing the net, wanting to see more than just Sonic 1, 2, or 3.... and what do I see? Some guy called Clement is playing a game called Sonic Triple Trouble. I'm interested! And I've been hooked ever since. In 2011, I met the love of my life, and I was surprised as all hell to find out she is also a Sonic fan. She had a copy of Sonic Unleashed for the Xbox 360. I played a few levels as Modern Sonic, and a few as the Werehog. I loved every minute of it, and every time I get my hands on a new Sonic game since that date, I play the hell out of it, even a substandard game like Sonic Boom... I don't find the game horrendous. 06 is still a more torturous game for me. Boom has more fun than 06, and it always will in my case. I don't give a spin-dashing fuck what the pessimistic fans say, I don't think the series is dead. They recovered from worse than this... There's a reason I've properly come back to Sonic... and it's down to you Clement. You managed to hang on to my attention by LPing every Sonic game. I was stunned shitless back then, and I'm still stunned shitless right now, in 2015, that you've not given up on the LPs yet... Jesus Christ, they're gonna take forever. With your views on Sonic, and especially this video itself, I have a mass MASS amount of respect for you Clement. You have the best views, and are simple the greatest Sonic player on RU-vid. Better than all those other famous Sonic players... Including Cybershell, including Cobi, including Johnny (His views are inconsistent and horseshit!). You are simply the best, if only for your views and opinions, never mind how well you play and comment on the games! You are probably the most mature Sonic fan on RU-vid! I will follow you forever, probably even after Sonic is done. 06 didn't turn me away when I heard about it. I played 06 after Unleashed. Sonic 06 may have been the worst thing relating to video games ever for me, and the some of the worst feelings I had ever felt in my life... but I knew there were still good games out there. Unleashed, Colors, Generations, even Lost World, I had a fantastic time playing them, and I have no reason to believe the Sonic series is dead. They're still providing good stuff for me. I don't care what direction the series goes. As long as the content is fun, I will continue to support the series. I've been going for 20 years, and that's too long for me to just suddenly quit. Sonic Fan FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Insofar as negativity goes, I'm actually not the kind of player who focuses so much on the bad that it ruins the experience, which is probably why I can still have fun with Dragon Age II or the Final Fantasy XIII games in spite of them having some... er... pretty fugging glaring design problems. At least with Sonic games the bad parts are over and done with inside of fifteen minutes or so and I can get back to another cool high-speed platforming stage, but the worst I can say about the likes of Sonic Lost World is that I didn't really find the gameplay style it went for all that compelling compared to the Unleashed and Adventure styles. The only legitimately horrible games that "need to die" in the series are '06 and arguably Shadow, but Shadow was functionally not much worse than Heroes--I'd say it's more just lackluster and way-too-edgy. There's stuff I don't enjoy in a lot of the games, but plenty that I do enjoy in most of those same games. I don't think the 3D Sonic titles are guilty of much worse than a lot of other series' patchy-yet-well-loved entries, I think the real issue is that people gravitate toward complaints and mocking. It's "fun" to make fun of bad games, so it's "fun" to hate them at every opportunity. Games that are at worst average have been whined about rather insistently and as I get older I realize that if people didn't have so much fun complaining about things they'd probably just drop a negative comment about the game and then move onto the next prospect. So, you asked for positivity, and my positive comment is "I really like the Sonic Archie comics." That's a bit off-point to the game series, but ever since Ian Flynn's writing and Tracey Yardley's art style revitalized the series after the... admittedly disturbing "soap opera" phase it went through, it's been a fun ride every issue, and Sonic Universe was a fantastic idea--focus on side-characters in a side-series so the main comic can spend all of its time on Sonic's personal adventures. Even the Ken Penders reboot fiasco couldn't do more than cause the series to stumble in the end. It's just the right blend of comical and dramatic for Sonic's tone and attitude.
+A Nobody Reborn! Ian Flynn's is amazing, I have the Mega man comic and they are truly great comics and make me want to try out the Sonic one but I don't know where to start any recommendation on what/where to start with.
+claramereca given that the Sonic comics just had reboot I'd start withe the Genesis arc or the Worlds collide cross over. Though what came before the reboot can be good it's just kind of a mess at times. Hope that helped
claramereca You could actually just start with the Sonic/Mega Man crossover and go from there. My understanding is that's what leads to the reboot anyway.
I do own Worlds Collide because of my Mega Man collection ( cant't wait for the next crossover btw) it does make sense Sonic reboot after that considering the ending of World collide. I will check it out!
If you want to know at what point the series "gets good," I'd say it was ironically the introduction of Scourge the Hedgehog. Some early stories such as Endgame are worth reading as well, but they aren't relevant to the current story.
I liked both versions. I had Ps2 and Ps3's. I tried with the Wii, but when you're used to the ps2 controls, it literally throws you off. (I'm talking about the Gamecube Controller.)
Dimps is actually a suprisingly good developer. Like, seriously: Sonic Advance 1-3, Street Fighter 4 and 5? They actually know stuff. They need more recognition in my opinion, because they're really good!
+Nurse Valentine I get really surprised whenever I hear people say Dimps is garbage. These are the same people who made the legendary DBZ Budokai games for god's sake.
Every time when I start thinking of Sonic and its fanbase, I slowly start to lose sight of the positive, but then I remember this video and watch it to remind myself of why I love Sonic, with Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Advance 3 being my favorites in the series, out of all of the Sonic games I've played anyways. It's true that people need to stop dwelling on the negativity and to stop nitpicking lots of minor things. There will always be some bad Sonic games, but there are PLENTY of good ones for you all to go back and play. If you don't like Sonic, feel free to leave. It's simple as that. I do feel that I already made a post like this in the past but whatever, I'm making a new one because why not. Lol. Thank you Clement for working hard on trying to show everyone that Sonic isn't a bad franchise and that people are just overreacting. Keep up the good work, man.
me also, the 16 bit, the 8 bit games, the advance games (great job, nintendo) the rush games that had 1 of the most epic boss fights the ghost titan and that music of the ghost ship maaaaaaaan! generations (3ds), soon i get sonic lost world from my lovely girlfriend and yes, also the 3ds version. i have all the "nintendo" sonic games nope, not the adventure games, but the real nintendo exclusive sonic games, such as the only 1 on the wii (and the ds) sonic colors (obviously sonic rush 3 on the ds, seriously hahaha. so it willl be fun!
Just wanted to say that this was a really good video that put a smile on my face. I agree, people tend to only look at the negatives when it comes to Sonic. Sonic has had plenty of hits and misses in his career. It's probably the most inconsistent game franchise I can think of. However, when Sonic's good, it's really really good. I'll never forget my first time playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles when it came out and I was 6. I'll never forget 100% Sonic Adventure 2 or Heroes. I'll never forget how great it felt to play Sonic Colors or Generations and give me more hope than ever for the series. I'm also sick to death of ignorant people like Egoraptor shitting on the entire series. I don't understand why so many kids watch his stuff even when they disagree so heavily with him. I'll admit that I'm a really cynical gamer at times. However, I only criticize games when publishers release bad products and follow bad anti-consumer practices. The Sonic series is mostly clean from all that crap and it's not a franchise people need to be angry about. If you want to help change the game industry for the better, then how about not supporting day 1 dlc and microtransactions? Making childish complaints about the Sonic series doesn't do anything for the industry. Any who, I guess I should list some positive things about this series like you wanted us all to do... My favorite Sonic games: - Sonic 3 & Knuckles (favorite video game of all time) - Sonic Generations - Sonic Rush Adventure - Sonic Heroes - Sonic Colors Favorite style of gameplay: The classic style from the Genesis games and Sonic Advance 1. I'll admit, I am the type of person that thinks momentum and physics are important to this type of game but I don't despise games like the Game Gear Sonic games that don't "get it right". Favorite levels: - Flying Battery - Hang Castle (can't get enough of how it looks) - Coral Cave - Modern Seaside Hill in Generations - Rooftop Run in Unleashed/Generations Favorite music: - Starlight Zone - Flying Battery - Hang Castle - Space Gadget (sorry Clement, I actually like Shadow's OST and I know most of the music off the top of my head) - Night Palace I also think you should do a follow up video on this where you take a look at peoples comments and show off some positive opinions surrounding the series. It'd be pleasant to watch.
Here's some positivity from a fellow die hard Sonic fan. When I was a kid, I was at a friend's house and we were looking for a game to play, and he chose a game he called Sonic. I had never seen or heard of Sonic before then. I had no interest at first, but when we put in the game (which was Sonic Riders Zero Gravity), I was immediately hooked by the opening cutscene. I was especially interested in the blue hedgehog who I was certain was this Sonic I had heard so much about. I was into it, and I knew nothing about it. I found out what the story was when a friend told me. I saw an episode of Sonic X on tv, and I completely understood the story of the Sonic franchise when I watched Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Underground, and Sonic SatAM. So, when I was younger, I went through this phase where I was into one thing, and moved on to another. This happened with Sonic multiple times. Years later, in junior high, I remembered Sonic. But, I wasn't a fan again yet. I was just like, "Oh yeah. Sonic's a thing." Then, I started watching some Sonic videos and remembered what I loved about Sonic. I came to the decision that Sonic was my favorite character, and he still is. But, I didn't have many Sonic games. I only had a mini Sega Genesis collection and Sonic and the Secret Rings. I replayed Sonic 1 and 2 and loved them both. And believe it or not, Sonic 06 looked cool to me and I REALLY wanted to try it out. Lucky for me, I saw your review and realized what a painful experience it would be. So thanks for saving me! Now, I've started collecting Sonic games, and I've actually gotten a lot of my classmates into Sonic as well. Glad you love Sonic as much as I do, bro!
I'm glad I found a place where I can say SA2 is one of my favorite games ever without being told I'm wrong. Clement, your opinions give me hope. No really, they do, because the mood around Sonic nowadays is just so depressing.
My first Sonic experience was with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle in 2006, when I was just about 5 years old. I remember liking it a lot, and not caring about any of the bad things, because I was young, I could care a lot less about story elements at age 5. But, I still loved the game, and I still do. It's probably a solid #7 on my favorite games. But it has its flaws, and I love it for that. No game is perfect, even Mario Galaxy (a highly, highly, highly overrated game) and Ocarina of Time, they have their flaws. I grew out of Sonic around 2008, because around that time, SA2 was the only game I had, and I eventually got bored of it. I was starting to get interested in Pokemon more than anything. I had picked up Diamond a couple of months earlier, and I instantly got hooked. It blew away my 7 year old mind. The graphics were great, gameplay (though a bit slow) was great. At the time, I thought it was the best game ever. But again, no game is perfect. Around 2012, I was browsing RU-vid;
and I found a video called, "Sonic Generations Soundtrack, all 40 songs". I remembered that I had played a sonic game before, so I decided to check it out. And the moment that first drum fill into the title music began, I instantly fell in love. I was honestly speechless, I was hooked on this game. I just got my allowance a few days earlier, and I was originally going to spend it on New Super Mario Bros, but I wanted Generations more. The instant I turned on the game, I fell in love. The high speed action of both Sonics, it was amazing, the sound track was amazing! Sure, a couple of glitches here and there, but it was astounding. I was a Sonic fan again, and I never looked back. I'll always support Sonic, through thick and thin.
There isnt much left to say that you had said. Funny thing is, Sonic Chronicles was one of the first Sonic games I played. I enjoyed it a lot and it got me into the series myself. I could never stop playing Sonic Rush Adventure when i first got it. I never got to play any of the older games, I grew up loving Sonic in the dark age. I was always made fun of liking the series but i stayed with it. It wasnt till 2010 where i finnaly was able to start trying all the games pre 2007 (I didnt get Unleashed until 2012 and Sonic Colors wasnt out yet) and i knew right then i was a fan. Hell, earlier this year i went and bought Sonic 2006 just to see how the series hit rock bottom personally. When it comes to Sonic games, I just cant get enough. You, SomecallmeJohnny and the people over on Brainscratchcomms were some of the only youtubers i watched back in the day just because you guys are still support the series, and it made me truely happy to hear others talk and joke about all the Sonic games. Unleashed, Colors and Generations were amazing to me, the speed of the Rush Series i loved, and I loved Black Knight. The Classic games are now games i go back to all the time and Sonic 3 and Knuckles became one my favourite games.
+Temple Of The Azure Flame It would've all been one game but the cartridge was too small and it would've been too expensive to fit everything they had planned for it on one game, so they had to split it. They were two games back then technically, but the full Sonic 3 experience has the Knuckles. Both use the same engine, same artstyle, same dev team, it's all Sonic 3.
That American Narrator I felt that it was an experiment that went wrong but could have gone right. If they tried it again I believe they can make an enjoyable Shadow game.
This video’s message is more relevant now then ever. Happy 31th anniversary Sonic. You will always be my favorite media series (even if the fanbase is annoying).
to all you sonic fans out there including +somecallmejohnny, +clementJ64, +expandshadow, +that one true nobody, and everyone else, thank you for defending the sonic series. I'm having a hard time defending it againist stupid complains with the sonic community, but this series will never be dead to me. if it weren't for you guys, i wouldn't have been able to try some of the later sonic games like colors and genrations and even unleashed. we all have our bad times with the sonic series, mine and clement worse was sonic 06, john was shadow the hedgehog. we all had our badpoint in the series, and almost abandon the series, but then, unleashed, colors and genrations came, and we all had faith in the series again. KEEP IN MIND THAT BOTH SONIC BOOM GAMES WERE NOT MADE BY SONIC TEAM GUYS! it not cool to hate on sonic because everyone else does. I'm speaking as a long time sonic fan since. i was 5 years old. it my opinion, my way of being a sonic fan. but there will always be defenders of this series, no matter the game, comics, or anything else that this series has, sonic will never be dead. I'm not saying the series is perfect, but it has it good moments. thank you all for reading this comment.
My first introduction to Sonic was the Genesis games that I played at my cousin's place in the late 90's, followed by the Adventure games in the early 2000’s. Sonic 3 & Knuckles to me is the greatest 2D platformer I've ever played in my life. I loved the large scope of that game and how it told a story without a single word (Maybe a chuckle). I also enjoyed how simple yet different Sonic, Tails & Knuckles played like giving great reasons to revisit areas using their unique abilities. As for the Adventure games, I personally find them way more enjoyable than 64 & Sunshine were (I'd get all emblems over the stars/shines in those games any day). Like most, I found the Sonic/Shadow stages in SA1 & SA2 to be to the most epic and enjoyable thrill rides I've ever had in 3D games before. I've played many 3D platformers prior to this like Mario, Crash, Spyro, Ape Escape, R&C, Sly, etc, but something about those SA games just give me a tad bit more of appeal. I like a lot of the other games in between like the GBA/DS games (Also, I think I'm one of the 7 people that actually liked Secret Rings), but moving on to recent games like Unleashed, Colors, Generations & Lost World brought back the same thrill and fun that the Genesis and Dreamcast era did for me. Specifically, I really liked the 3D portions of these games and I personally think it’s up to snuff with the SA titles and then some. Generations in particular was such an awesome throwback to everything Sonic in more ways than just the remade levels & bosses. Unlocking songs and remixes from the other games not showcased made me want to shed Man tears from memories alone. It was truly a love letter to everything Sonic. Moving forward, all I want to see from a new Sonic game is a "Full" 3D experience in the sense that the 2D sections that were in recent modern games are no longer there (Or mostly absent), as I always found the 3D sections a bit more exciting and unique in comparison. However, I'd like to of course still see 2D Sonic games, just not melded together since I think we've been exposed to enough of that for now. Hopefully Sonic 4 (Or maybe 5?) is still a thing. Anywho, hoping for the best in Sonic's future and despite any negativity that the series receives, I'll always be eager for some Sonic action!
Hey Brandon! Whatz up! (I think that's how the kids say it) My initiation of Sonic is a unique one. I vividly remember playing Sonic 3, CD, R, and 3D blast on my family's windows 95 & 98 PCs. I had those games and the GBA games to play until Heroes came to the PS2, so I'm a die-hard 2D guy. I played Shadow and I found it manageable. 06 I found frustrating, but I finished it in due time. The hardest thing in that game was realizing you can throw the giant rock back at Iblis. Didn't own wii, so can't say much about them. And the most recent games seem to be fair. Don't know how long this deal with Nitendon't is (4 games?) but I will assume the next multi-console game will be fairly good. But I don't follow Sonic that closely, but always seem to catch wind when the next Sonic or R&C game is coming out, that's all that maters for me.
I love the Sonic series. 1,2,3&K, CD, Generations, Colors, and Before and After the Sequel. Just love them and their solid gameplay. I have to admit that despite Sonic R being a poorly programmed game, it's kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Great video, Clement ☺
You want positive comments about Sonic? I'm sorry Clement, but this is RU-vid. You'd have more chance of getting struck by lightning three times in succession right after winning the Lottery before that ever happens.
Ayy Lmao Unless the government start surgically implementing bombs into people where the slightest curse will make their head explode, I highly doubt it.
How has no one noticed you in this comment section yet? Having you comment on someone's video is like having a celebrity comment on your video (a likable celebrity)
I think the first game featuring Sonic I played was Sonic Flash, a Flash game using Advance 1 sprites made by a dedicated fan in support of the release of Sonic Advance 2. Not sure where I first heard of Sonic, but the first actual released game I played was Sonic N-gage, an Advance port onto mobile. Wasn't the best game, but Egg Rocket Zone is still my favorite zone and the zone that ended up getting me into the series. Sonic Flash -> Sonic N-gage -> Sonic Adventure DX -> Sonic Adventure 2 Battle -> Sonic Heroes -> Sonic Advance -> Sonic Advance 2 -> Sonic Advance 3 -> Sonic Battle -> Sonic Rush -> Sonic Generations and now finally I'm playing Colors. Great series, great games and great retrospective... Great Clement.
The Sonic Series always managed to impress me with it's cool characters, speedy, adrenaline rushing nature, it's cool factor and it's fun cheesy memorable moments. While things did go downhill for him within 05 - 07, the series still managed to hold my interest. Even now, this series still has me waiting to see what's next. I'm looking forward to and am hopeful for the Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary Game, whatever it may be.
I first found Sonic when I was 7 years old and my best friend at the time had a copy of Sonic Adventure 2 for the gamecube. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THAT GAME. I begged my parents to buy me a gamecube and get me that game because of how much fun I had. Then every time we went anywhere I was always looking for Sonic games to buy and play because I just loved the character THAT much. I'm 22 now, and every so often I come back to your retrospective because it's really refreshing to hear someone's positive opinions about Sonic and seeing that they like the franchise as much as I do. So thanks for this Clement! My favorite Sonic game is definitely SA2 and oddly enough my favorite character isn't even in the games lol, it's Manic the Hedgehog. If I had to pick someone from the games, it would be Sonic hands down 💕
My jollies with the Sonic franchise, contrary to popular choice, started off with Sonic Heroes in 2004. And I've been following the series ever since. I may have been a little late to get into games like the Genesis and Adventure games, but better late than never. It definitely had its ups, downs and all-arounds, but even today, I'm always looking forward to the next game in the line-up, and I can only hope that the 25th anniversary game turns out to be just as good, if not better, than my favorite anniversary game, Sonic Generations. A guy can dream, can't he?
Man it hurts how relevant this video still is today. Clement, your positivity was and still is an absolute blessing. Haters do enough bashing. When "fans" join in, that's all anybody sees. We need more love in this community man.
I gotta hand it to ya, Clement; Your optimism shines brighter than any star in our solar system. :P In all seriousness, the Sonic franchise is one of the most misunderstood franchises out there. Yes, there are low points in the series, very low points at that, but that shouldn't undermine the success Sonic had and will continue to get. Just because Sonic 06 exists, it doesn't erase how big Sonic was in the 90's. I still consider Sonic a gaming legend, and while his legacy has been tarnished due to the very low points in the franchise's history, he shouldn't be tossed aside. I can go back and play Sonic Adventure and love it as much as I did the first playthrough. Will it be harder for Sonic to recover now? Yes, but it isn't impossible. After all, this series is lucky it survived Sonic 06. I consider 06 worse than Rise of Lyric in many ways. It doesn't make Rise of Lyric good, but not an abomination. For now, Sonic is going back to rehab in order to get his career back in tact again, but he has support. There will be fans that will continue to support this series. I know I will, and I'll let games like Rise of Lyric be a thing of the past, and moving forward is the best thing to do. Good luck on your second trip of recovery, Sonic. You're gonna need it.
Amazing video, Clement. Perfect from beginning to end. I remember my first introduction to Sonic being the Adventure games. I can still remember all the feelings that went through me when I first played City Escape, amazing music, great gameplay, well-made level design, and it all ended with an introduction to one of my favourite Anti-Heroes in video games -- Shadow the Hedgehog. After the Adventure games, I went on to getting the Sonic Gems Collection and Mega Collection, thus introducing me to the Genesis games. They were all fun and action packed, Sonic 3 was especially a favourite of mine I kept going back to. Next game I got after that was Sonic Heroes, a solid game that I immediately fell in love with because of all those playable characters. I got Shadow the Hedgehog and Ultimate Spider-Man later down the road, you can guess which one I played more. I was okay with Shadow's game, but I was much more focused on how great USM is. All I could remember after that is that I sort of dropped the franchise. Sure, I played Sonic Riders and what not in my friend's house several times and I still liked the character, but I wasn't as into him as before so I just trailed off. Fast forward a few more years, I learn that Generations is a thing. Yeah, it was extremely late as I found out in late 2013 but it got me extremely interested. Later on I got Adventure 2 for PSN(didn't get Adventure 1 since I still had the gamecube copy) and just replayed it, I still love the game to this day. I'll be honest right now, Sonic is not my favourite franchise. Sonic isn't my favourite game series. I'm not into Sonic as much as I was before. I'll still have my preferred franchises like the entirety of the Marvel Universe. But I cannot forget the amazing memories Sonic has given me, and that is what made me ultimately decide to get into this franchise again, just so I could feel like a kid again. As for favourite character? I'd say Shadow, in SA2 at least. He's the first Sonic character to actually be human, he has a purpose. And to top that off, he's the perfect rival to Sonic. Don't get me wrong, I friggin love Metal Sonic. Who doesn't love Metal Sonic? But we didn't get the same kind of rivalry Shadow and Sonic had in Adventure 2 in Sonic CD. Sonic's cocky and arrogant, Shadow is calm and collected. They also pretty much share the same abilities, and their banter in SA2 is extremely memorable. It's just a shame that his own spin-off pretty much ruined the character. The only game that made him better after that was 06, one of the positive things the game did was toning Shadow down and making him more like his SA2 character. I believe that with a few tweaking and a better voice actor, Shadow can be relevant again.
Your Sonic Unleashed Let's Play is my favourite of all of your Sonic Let's Plays, Clement! When there isn't anything else that I want to watch on RU-vid, that's the one series of videos I always go back to at the end of the day. SO GODDAMN GOOD!!!! 😊😁😄😆
I first got into this series in early 2014. I was having a rough time in elementary school, and was incredibly depressed about the fact that I didn't fit in. I did have this amazing friend, however. Her name was Johnea, and she always drew pictures of Sonic. She said she watched a show called "Sonic X", and after a while, I was thinking to myself, "You know what, I think I'll check out more of this 'sonic stuff'..." Before then, I used to watch the Sonic Satam show with my little sister on Netflix all the time, and I did play some of the classic games on my little DSI, but aside from that, I wasn't really THAT big a fan of the series. But then it all started when I watched a video called "Character compare, Sonic vs the Flash," by 3bismyname. I honestly to this day don't think I could thank him enough for making that video. I'm not gonna say who won, but the way he described Sonic's personality made it seem very intriguing. And, it was. Then I started watching your videos and somecallmejohnny's videos as well, and hearing from two people who really loved this series, I wanted to buy the games and play the games for myself. Of course, I didn't have the consoles and handhelds you guys had, so I decided to watch the cutscenes provided by TheRealSonicFan. I instantly fell in love with the stories and especially the music and the characters. I got the games later, but my point is that it wasn't the GAMES that got me into the series, it was the CHARACTERS. More specifically, the character of Sonic himself. I know this will sound incredibly cheesy, but for a video game character, or really just a fictional character in general, I found Sonic to be downright inspiring. He always moved forward with now regrets, followed his own path, and did the right thing in his own way. He was a cocky smart mouth, but he was also a likable, carefree slacker. Most importantly, he didn't give the slightest $&@! about what anyone he didn't care about thought of him. I did. So, when I started doing that, only caring about what I thought, and drawing my OWN conclusions, I became far happier than I was before, and I even started making more friends. Not only that, but Sonic even got me into gaming. It got me into the Portal games, more of the Mario games, some of my favorite games of all time. It got me into other RU-vidrs like Markiplier, the Nostalgia Critic, Connor the Waffle, and even scary movies and creepypastas. That then led me to Jerry Peet, who got me to start watching MLP FiM again, after being scared crapless by an Internet story. MLP became my favorite TV show of all time. Then I heard sonic fans talking about Michael Jackson, and how he wrote the music for Sonic 3, and how he was the inspiration for Sonic's shoes and stuff like that, but then I was watching people like Todd in the Shadows talk about Michael Jackson all the time, so I figured I'd check out some of his songs. Again, I fell in love. I couldn't believe I was missing out on all that for so long. I could go on and on, but that could probably make a short documentary by the time I would be done. The point is, I loved and still love Sonic for inspiring me to be a stronger person, and introducing me to so many new things. That's why I'm a part of this community.
I've played about 1/2 of the Sonic games and I plan on playing more since watching your LP's Clement. I've been playing since the Genesis days and it's really been awesome introducing my son to Sonic. We started at the original trilogy and we're at Sonic Colors. Thanks for the LP's, peace!!
Clement, you actually helped me become a Sonic fan again, when I dropped out of the series. Thank you. Thank you for making me, both, a Sonic fan again, and a MegaMan fan. I'd also like to thank you for your content. Keep it up, man.
Because you asked: Why I got into sonic: Clement's review of 06 Favorite game: Sonic Adventure (I think the positives far outweighed the negatives.) Favorite character: Silver and Blaze (I can never decide between the two. Silver's backstory, powers, and personality are all interesting and likeable, and Blaze is freakin' badass.)
+WeirdoTZero - That, and the infamous IGN review of Unleashed that Clement cited, are the reasons many Sonic fans no longer trust "professional" reviewers. Well, _no one_ trusts "professional" reviewers or "journalists" nowadays, so I guess we were ahead of the curve.
+MultiBoxingKid Just read it myself to see what he was talking about. Basically he lets his bad memories of Heroes and 06 cloud his judgement and say the levels based off those games all suck. I'll agree with him in saying the final boss is terrible, but the rest of the game is great.
Clement, I just wanted to say good job on all of the content you've been producing for us over the years. You've always been an earnest person and have always had really down-to-earth commentaries. You have that special ability to communicate with the viewer. I'm not quite sure how to put it, but when you make a commentary on anything that you have a passion for, it feels like I'm actually listening to you talk straight to me, rather than doing a "public speech", or "reading straight off the script" type of vibe, if that makes any sense. My favorite character in the Sonic Series would have to be Silver. I really like his personality. As for the games, I've only played a few, but I'd have to say the first Sonic game because of its simplicity. Congrats on all of the hard work and keep making great videos!
Very well articulated dude. I like how you put things! Honestly I love Heroes best for the 3d games, and CD for the 2d games. My favorite character is probably just the blue blur himself. Thank you for being a cool fan bro.
i loved it too. Sure, the "Gamma" fights got annoying when they were back to back but I still had fun. And I disagree with Clement that the combat is boring. Even though the movesets are simple, you can be very creative with how to use them.
I love how this video assembled all the famous Sonic Fans/RU-vidrs. Ever since I found your channel back in 2010 I believe, looking for a complete playthrough of MMX5, and you only had like, 7k subscribers, I knew you would become great one day, and boy was I correct. You inspired me, and a lot of youtubers over the years. I got to know about Somecallmejohnny, BSC, and Cobanermani456 throughout your guests appearences, which eventually led me to see GameXplain, Etika, chuggaconroy, HFC, and eventually, a whole universe of Sonic fans. For me, you are, and always will be the best youtuber ever. And this video shows me I'm not wrong with my decision. So, my memories with Sonic began at a friends' house, where he had a Sega genesis with the original game, he literally lived in front of our school, so everytime I would be late at home, it was because I wanted to play Sonic. After that, I mentioned the game to my older cousin, and he bought a CD that included an emulator for the system and all the Sonic games, that's when Sonic 3&K became my favourite title to date. Yet, I became a definitive Sonic fan after playing both, the first adventure game and Sonic Heroes (we are talking about 2004 app, I was 9 at the time, I'm 21 right now), both on their legal PC versions. Up to this day I still play all those games, and I do not regret any of that. Sure Shadow and 06' are bottom rock, but as I recall Johnny mentioning it, sometimes, you need to hit that, to realize something is wrong, and I'm glad Sonic Team did it, we wouldn't have modern gems like Unleashed, Colours and Generations if it wasn't for that experience. I love Sonic, and I love this Channel, I'm waiting for your return buddy :). (2016, July as of this comment)
I got into Sonic from Super Smash Bros, and picked up the Sonic Classics Collection for DS, and was blown away. But elevated me to being a Sonic fan, was you! You were one of the first Let's Plays I ever saw, and seeing how much you loved it, made me realize how much I loved it. I began drawing the characters, and thinking about what they meant to me! I made up my own TimeLine for the series, and I still always like thinking about what the characters would do in my universe!
Sonic Adventure 2 is the game i had the biggest 180 in my opinion of it. I loved the game as a kid, so i decided to play the game two years ago and, wow, i was really tolerant to games flaws back in 2002. 66% (Tails/Eggman and Knuckles/Rouge) of the game is either utterly boring or outright crap to play, specially Meteor Herd and Mad Space. The butchered radar system (which was perfect in the first Adventure game), some levels being too long and spacious for their own good, the clunkiness and stiffness of Tails/Eggman (Gamma controlled perfectly fine) and some other annoyances really brought this game down to me, made me realize how powerful nostalgia can be. I also played Sonic Adventure 1 two years ago and i enjoyed it. Amy and specially Big aside.
+okagron I kind of feel the same way. I also think the story takes itself a bit too seriously and a little out of tone and forgets to have fun a bit like Adventure 1. However I still think it's a decent game and can be a lovable game even with it's short comings. Not the best thing in the world or the franchise, but it's a good time.
+okagron I honestly got a kick out of Amy and Big, on the standard difficulty at least. I never go for the 100% on anything unless it's real easy, or gets me some kind of great reward. Metal Sonic was not good enough for me to 100% any of the missions, but I did enjoy the change of pace and playstyle those two offered.
+okagron I still have fun with the Mech sections. Perhaps not the adrenaline-needle that comes with the turf in Sonic, but enjoyable regardless. Shooting a nice combo always feels great and stuff like the heavy jump or camera issues never got in my way (remember, I was a person groomed to 3D platforming by Gex, so the point of the camera sorta explains itself from there). Treasure hunting was certainly the low-point. Areas are too big and the downgrade from Adventure 1 are constantly chipping at the back of my head.
Wow Clemont. You had faith in Sonic. And I stop having faith in Sonic ever since I saw the Sonic Boom designs, which is pathetic for me, I know. But since I've been listening to some Sonic Runners music, which is kick ass btw, I've been having some concerns about it. Then after seeing this video, I'm more likely to wanting to return to Sonic now. I mean, come on, my username wouldn't be "*Sonic* Ramon" for nothing. Haha. Anyways, I'm glad that I subscribed to you because so far, you and my cousin are the only ones that believes in Sonic. :)
+Sonic Ramon Buddy, don't let the Boom designs turn you away from Sonic. Rise of Lyric wasn't the worst thing ever, and the TV show is brilliant. The designs in 06 are much worse. Trust me
+Sonic Ramon lol, just be happy that Sonic Team stepped in when they did, because they didn't like most of the designs that BRB presented to them. If you saw the early concept designs, the Sonic Boom designs would've been so much different then the final designs that we have now. Eggman would look much skinnier, Sonic would look more like a realistic hedgehog wearing pants, etc. It wouldn't look like Sonic anymore, just an regular hedgehog with Sonic's name attached to it.
***** I like how you straight up ignore my "After I see this video, I'm more likely to return back to Sonic" phrase, judging by how you started off your sentence. Other than that, thanks for letting me know about Sonic Team growing some balls. :L
Clement, This video lightened me up literally within 1 minute of watching it, I've watched your videos since I was like 9 - 10 than stopped watching for some reason, than came back, around 10 months ago, this is why I watch these videos, cause of positive thoughts, I got tired of other channels where, all I hear is "this is bad, and this is bad." I will never stop watching these videos until the day youtube dies, which I truly hope isn't for quite a while, welcome back Clement, and we missed you a lot!
I still think the Adventure games are good. They don't hold up amazingly, but from a gameplay perspective I still like them. I even like the Knuckles segments.
+BadCandyStudios I'll agree that the Adventure duo hasn't held up well. If they were to make an Adventure 3 today, with update controls, graphics and whatnot? It'd be good, I bet. So long as all the mistakes that appeared in 06 don't repeat themselves.
One argument that I'm tired of hearing is that "Sega can't keep a consistent formula." Yes, Sega has a history of changing up the formula every game. Why, you may ask? BECAUSE YOU ALL BITCH ABOUT ANYTHING NEW THEY TRY! When they hit a formula that works, they stick with it for a few games and move on. Why? Because not moving on is exactly the problem with Mario games these days. Are you whiners honestly telling me you want another boost game? Where can they go? Those games explored our world, vibrant alien worlds, and even went back to old levels and redid them. What more could they do without making it stale? Wait, silly me, you don't want things to be the same. Want to know why I know this? Because you all bitched about Sonic 4 being too much like the classics. Again, where could the 2D formula have gone? Those games pretty much explored every unique level trope as well. Yes, the physics were wonky in Episode 1, but Episode 2 fixed that. Yet the whiners were still in full supply.
+thessbmaster Here's the thing: Yes, changing things up does keep Sonic from becoming "stale," however, this also creates inconsistency as well in both gameplay and quality. Whether you like Unleashed and Lost World or not, those games weren't exactly the best designed games out there, and those were first attempts at making a new gameplay style (okay, maybe Unleashed wasn't the first, but it was the first boost game on a home console). The boost formula was ironed out in Colors and perfected in Generations, yet the Lost World style needs to grow. Go to any Sonic forum site or any comment section involving Sonic on RU-vid, and you're sure to find someone complaining about how they loathe one gameplay style, but can't get enough for another. You could just chalk it up to "Well, maybe it's not their thing." Maybe so, but that doesn't excuse some of the poor design choices some of these games have (metal collecting, no tutorial for parkour, etc). Keep in mind that I'm not against change and would prefer to see Sonic do his own thing and if change needs to happen, I'll adapt to it, but there needs to be a level of consistency in quality in order for me to really get down with it. Sonic isn't consistent with that I find. I find myself disliking Unleashed because of its metal collecting, baron and linear day time stages, and slippery as butter controls, yet love Generations for making the Modern stages much more open and well designed compared to the day time stages, and while the controls could be better, at least they aren't slippery. I'm one of those people who doesn't think Sonic got bad when he went into 3D, and I actually like more 3D games than I do dislike them, but these games have issues, issues that could potentially drive people away (wonky camera, gameplay styles that aren't fitting to the series nor fun, and on some occasion, difficult to adjust to controls). I support Sonic changing things up, but there needs to be consistency when that change does happen, mainly in quality.
+thessbmaster Consistency isn't Mario's problem, it's his strong-suite. And to be honest, yeah, I wouldn't mind another game in the boost saga. I still feel that formula has some untapped potential.
+thessbmaster The reason why so many complain is because the original formula was just fine in the first place, and the majority of the changes they have made have been either just plain horrible or mediocre. No one says they should rehash the same thing every game, but trying to reinvent the wheel every game only leads to even more bad things. Keep the excessively radical changes to the spinoffs, for that is exactly why spinoff games are a thing in the first place.
Hub Pie The thing with that is that, after Unleashed, while people did have complaints, the fanbase was at least willing to see the boost formula grow. A lot of people were saying that the daytime stages were really well done and that if they made a game with more of that, then the game would be absolutely great. Sega listened, and we got Colors and Generations. With Lost World, there was a lot more vitriol. People were going so far as to say that the dark age is returning. There were some reasonable people that pointed out the problems of the game while saying that they were overall were willing to try the formula out again, but most of them were just saying that Lost World was garbage, and if that's the reaction you get, you're not going to give them more of the same (then again, they expect people to buy the next Boom game, so what do I know?)
Clement, you're history with the sonic series and you're opinion on it overall is damn near the same as mine is (except I started with sonic 1). I also didn't have it easy in high school. I also love sonic heroes despite what the critics think, and there was a time when I gave up on sonic, until sonic unleashed. thank you so making for not only making this video, but playing and defending the series overall (and pointing out the flaws when needed). I'm a fan of your channel because unlike a lot of youtubers, I can relate to you. I'm looking forward to what the future holds for sonic, as well as your future LP's.
I love some Sonic games. I was introduced fairly late with Sonic X, then when I got a DSi in 2009 and Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games. After that, I got Colors on DS, then when I finally got a Wii, the version of Colors on it, which is still my favorite game I've played for being so much fun and still making me laugh a lot. I ended up getting Sonic Unleashed... on Wii. It was meh. I managed to get Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing, and later Sonic Rush and Sonic Classic Collection on DS the same day I got my Wii on Christmas in 2011. Loved Sonic 1, 2, and 3. Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing may have been a Mario Kart ripoff, but I'd say it's better in some ways. Rush was pretty fun too. So much so that I decided to try and get the sequel, and got it for Christmas in 2013. I liked that game, but definitely not as much. By this time, I'd obtained a 3DS XL. One of the first games I bought for it was Sonic Generations, which wasn't the best, but was okay in its own right. The same year I got Rush Adventure, I got Sonic Lost World 3DS, launch day. Funny story, I'd been so hyped for that game that I even had "special gloves" to use to open it. After extensive play through the game's story, I felt like the only fun levels in the game were Windy Hill, Desert Ruins, and the final boss, and detested the forced gimmicks. In 2014, I decided to try out the Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal demo and also bought Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed. I can safely say I don't recommend the 3DS version of Transformed for its notable glitch of not being able to perform tricks after using the All-Star moves. Upon getting Sonic Boom on 3DS, I thought it wasn't too bad. It was fun, and still had a sense of speed. The only problem is that 100% was pretty much required in order to get to the final boss, and the prize was a real slap in the face to the player. Not to the point that I hated the game, though. Since then, I've finally managed to get a Wii U, and after a couple of months, downloaded the demos for Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed and Sonic Lost World. I didn't want to try out Rise of Lyric because of the things I heard about the game. Would I go back to try it? Nope. Sorry, no coaxing here. I got Lost World a couple days after wasting every use I had on the demo, because I thought it was really fun. As for the full game, aside from a couple of bullshit levels as well as a few other things, I did enjoy it. It was kind of like a spiritual successor to Colors, which to me hurt it a bit, but not enough to make me say it's a bad game. The demo of Transformed on Wii U was a bit awkward to get used to, because ZR is to accelerate while ZL is to drift if I remember correctly. In terms of future Sonic titles, I'm hoping to get more of his games as time passes. I'm definitely picking up Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, and hope that game does better and gets judged fairly. Hell, I even main Sonic in Smash Bros 4. It seems he gets a bad rep even though he's pretty fun, much like his franchise. Here's hoping that people don't antagonize Sonic fans as all being idiots as time goes on.
Amazing vid Clement, I been a Sonic fan since I was 5 years old ever since my dad brought me a Sega Genesis/Sonic1 bundle for Christmas. Since I stuck around through Classic, Adventure, and now Modern and loved every bit of it with a few exception. My fav game in the series so far is Generations, with Colors, SA2, S3&K, and Rush close behind.
Im brazilian and when I was 3, my family was not having a good time with money... But one day I got the mega drive 3 and my 1st game was sonic the hedgehog.. He was so fast.. So much fun.. It was making me forgeting all the bad things happening and making me happy! It makes me fell freedom! I was having soo much fun and playing everytime and hearing the awsome music... And still he aways makes me free! :D It looks like a hakuna-matata thing..
I like the Sonic series since Sonic Adventure DX was the first game I ever played and I always thought it was a lot more interesting than Mario, also my favorites 2 characters are 1. Sonic and 2. Knuckles. Sonic is obvious but Knuckles, he's a really underrated character in the series when he one of the most kickass one in it, he's basically the Hero version of Shadow if you think about it and I just like him
Rock aka "Mega Man" he so underrated when he really shouldn't, hell I think if I remember correctly he's the most underrated and the series, and if he is. That a reason I like him, I like underrated stuff and hate overrated stuff ((I still think that SA2 is a good game, even if it is a bit overrated))
I use to LOVE the sonic franchise when I was younger. The first games I played were Sonic Heroes and Sonic Advance 1 when I was like 6 or 7. Your videos, Clement, actually really got me into the older games from watching your Sonic LPs in 2008, so thanks for that! I kinda fell out of the franchise as I got older, just acquired different tastes I guess, but can only remember great things from following the series for years.
Yo, Unleashed was hatbage because ITS NOT SANIK! Hey, Sonic Advense is shit because ITS ON A NINTENDO Didn't you know Sonic Riders sucks BECAUSE IT HAS HOVER BOARDS Why is Sonic driving a car in A CAR RACING GAME? ~Every generic edgelord who doesn't like Sonic games like they are
I love the Sonic series because it and two of the Bakugan games for the DS are what got me into video games Sure I played Wii Sports but being able to play two games based on one of my favorite shows and having a super speedy hedgehog blaze through food filled levels and pure eye candy? Sign me up! Then I played Unleashed for the Wii and ADORED Adabat, Spagonia, and Eggmanland. When I heard about Black Knight, I wanted it so badly and it's my second favorite Sonic game. It was by then that I began to love Sonic for level design, boss fights, music, and just how fun it is.
i loved your video, you basically said everything i lived with sonic and love about it, i started with sonic 1 on the genesis, played all the genesis titles, i even liked 3dblast, then i played all mixed titles, never followed a straight line of the series, played almost all of sonic, i love the music, the style, the gameplay and is really cool to see someone else loving this character as much as i do and not being just a hater of a franchise without even recognising its good titles
You know I'm SICK of people saying "I loved sonic back in the genesis games. All these new games suck don't play them" They have nostalgia goggles on their heads I know about the bad sonic games 06 was terrible Secret rings was crap Shadow was basically Ow the Edge Lost world 3DS was Snowballs But these people are saying that games like Colors, Generations, Unleashed and more are just crap.
Oh I remember my first sonic game sonic advance played it on his game boy when he was visiting and then I stole the kind of got in trouble for that but I played the shit out of it I eventually just started collecting the games like an alcoholic buying boos And then theirs tails one of my favorite video game characters ever say what you want about him I know he's sometimes annoying or has a bad voice actor or just sounds like a straight up chick but he's just so relatable to me and he's a nerdy character without being a stereotypical nerd And this series is always changing and while most people find that annoying I think it adds variety Oh and SA2 is my favorite sonic game call me what you want call it overrated but I absolutely love it
I have always been impressed with your videos clement, you are actually the one that got me into sonic in the first place, and ever since then I've been playing the games and watching the tv show and being a supporter of the blue blur. Im really happy to see this video up and to know by reading the comments that there are more that love sonic in the positive way and dont just hang around to bitch about things that dont really effect the gameplay: my favorite sonic game is sonic colors, and my favorite character is shadow, (yeah im a anti-hero) lol
"There are certain gamers I just don't really have respect for anymore and usually it's the ones that whine about the stupidest shit that doesn't actually matter." You still seem fond of BrainScratch.
When i first got into sonic i was 3 in 2004 playing sa2 one of the best games ever i luved sonic ever since from playing sonic mega collections, sonic heroes, and i got to the classic sonic trilogy it's amazing i can see why sonic 2 is ur favorite game I played almost every sonic game in the franchise and sum were dull but at least they were polished sonic fans forget about all the good games in the franchise im blaming you sonic chronicles and sonic 06 and why do ppl hate on lost world its so underrated instead of talking about the bad games look at the good ones
My first ever experience with sonic was when I was about 5...my uncle had just given me his GameCube that he no longer wanted and he game a wide assortment of games with it. One of those games was the sonic mega collection. It took me a while to actually play the collection but when I did it was probably the fondest gaming experience..ever since then I've been a die hard sonic fan I never gave up on this series no matter what anyone said!! Sonic the hedgehog has been a large influence on me these past 10 years I love the series, the characters, the games, the comics, the shows!! And I think my love for the franchise grew when I discovered you Clement you helped me look at the franchise in a whole other perspective so thank you for that and thank you for the great content you make
