Why I move roadkill (and you should too)...
In Texas there is ample opportunity to see roadkill along motorways. We have some of the largest populations of wildlife, including whitetail deer, which means millions of animals die every year.
There are some practical reasons why moving roadkill is so valuable: for one, it ensures that other scavengers eating from the side of the road do not also become victims of motor accidents. This prevents vehicular damage, but also protects animals who are doing nothing more than helping recycle the nutrients of nature by consuming the roadkill.
There is nothing more sad than seeing a vulture, the “peace eagle” in many indigenous cultures’ perspective, dead next to a deer. That’s a lot of death simply to offer humanity an easy way of traveling from one place to another.
The other reasons to move roadkill are more spiritual. These animals often deserve a peaceful resting place just like humans. That might mean moving them off the side of the road into a beautiful batch of wildflowers, giving them some shade - whatever feels right.
I’ve started to add flowers and other parts of the local environment into altars of sorts so that the roadkill animal is respected and honored in death.
