I’m 43 and just started back after 20 years off. I’m a week in and landing kick flips and putting together simple lines. It hurts the next day but it’s super fun and way easier on the body than BJJ and Muay Thai. * by a week in I mean 6 sessions not 7 days. More like two weeks that way
Wow! I never knew that there's a set up for freestyle! I'm personally a street/ park skater but I totally respect this discipline of skateboarding and It's always amazing to watch just as much as a street skateboarding clip!
Oh snap!!! I made it into a Waltz video! So sick man feels like forever ago being on that tennis court. I've come such a long way since then. Whale tail is retired and The Champion is killin things for now! Thanks for the great boards, awesome videos and all the support for us beginners. You make freestyle so welcoming. I really appreciate that.
I just got my Waltz set up a few weeks ago. It literally changed the way I skate. I usually do freestyle on a popsicle board, I never knew what i was missing. Single kick is where its at, it makes casper tricks soooo much easier, its night and day
For sure, i use to skate a popsicle deck but when I switched over to Freestyle decks I was in love! I recently got the champion by waltz, made an unboxing video too!!
Can I just say that your videos are criminally underviewed / underappreciated. Thank you for all the content. You constantly motivate me to skate and get better, even though I'm a really new skater and can't do any of the freestyle tricks yet.
my lil bro has a 7.5 27.5" flat concave, symmetrical ninja turtles board and randomly i got on it yesterday and walk the dogs were way easier on that shape than my regular street board. pivoting just naturally shifts to my feet and the rail stand was way easier just because it was lower to the ground. basically, i understood why people freestyle in boards similar to that shape and size, even if i was on a toys r us board lol. RIP toys r us
Wow freestyle is really cool too abit more mellow and shows more of the fun style of boarding than street skating which is more aggressive. Both are fun but wow didn't know you can learn more.
I just started back up and decided to relearn street and also learn freestyle. I got a street set up with Andy Anderson wheels so I can still do freestyle and also got a freestyle setup to learn better. This is just my personal opinion and nothing against people who like them but I am not a fan of doing freestyle on a freestyle deck. It’s too cramped and just makes things unnecessarily difficult. FWIW I do not have big feet. Size 7US. I find that the extra length of a street deck is helpful and the concave and tail/nose angles don’t interfere at all. I think Rodney hit perfection when he designed the popsicle.
I'm from VA so naturally I listen to "Virginia" by Clipse a lot and I legitimately believed i accidentally played my itunes while your intro song was playing and that it was just syncing naturally into a random mix but nah thats the actual intro mix lol
I don’t have a freestyle setup and can’t buy one so i used my 7,75 trucks, 8,5 trucks and board and a couple of speed washers to make the wheels stick out the trucks to reach the 8,5 but stay on the trucks
@@FashowThaFoola that's a really nice board. I find it a bit small for my clown feet 😂 but I love doing endovers and stuff on it. It whips about really quick. Great for fast footwork and super stable in rail. I had a bit of trouble doing tailstop to heelside rail in the beginning but found using the nose instead helped a lot. I hope you have as much fun as I do! Welcome to the freestyle fam!
one day she will be mine, oh yes, she will be mine. awesome video as always Mike! your smile and your talent keep bringing me back, even tho i don't skate. keep being awesome ^.^
When we made the prom video to celebrate our first skateboard graphic i found a way to sneek a freestyle trick because it made easier to show the graphic, it was just a dumb rail flip but the best trick i as a filmer could do to show the graphic i had.
I was considering quitting skating but this video helped me to remember what its all about, having fun, creativity, and if you get hurt just walk/jump it off hahaha. This video got me hyped to get out this weekend and skate!!
Since never enough got the waltz decks again, I'm gonna get me one of them. Can't wait to have it in my hands. BTW. Whats the name of the song? Cuz I looked at the website of team teamwork and theres a lot of songs :D
I agree. I say if it works, it works. I ride a long popsicle for dance and cruising trickery and I like that the shape allows for a lot of the standard freestyle tricks to work as well.
Street skater here: You haven't talked about trucks. What are the expectations on a good freestyle truck? For example, I'm riding Indys for the good carve, the grind feeling and the height. Also, do you consider popped Flip tricks to be freestyle tricks, even though I rarely see them done? Historically, Mullen invented them on his farm skating flatground only.
Good trucks are mid/tall trucks that come with hard bushings. super low/loose setups will be sketchy in rail especially without freestyle wheels. I'd say all street tricks are technically freestyle since street is a sub-category of freestyle already.
Hi Mike Great video I’m a 6’3” transition skater with size 11 feet looking to get into trying freestyle. What setup would you recommend, deck, trucks wheels? Love the vids
Hey Jon, If you’re just trying to test the waters I’d recommend installing 2 nose skid plates, super hard bushings, and freestyle wheels on your favorite board - Waltz Skateboarding sells all of those except for the wheels. Those will be released in about a week. If you want to take the plunge, new freestyle completes will be on the Waltz Skateboarding web store in about a week as well
Good question. Waltz will offer an 8” freestyle deck soon. You can also put freestyle wheels and skid plates on a street board. I made a video about that ages ago. Gotta say though, a hybrid is never gonna be as comfy as a full on freestyle board. Street and freestyle just require such different boards
@@mike_osterman1 Ok thanks. Guess i'll just get a waltz board, cause the tricks you do just look so sick i gotta learn em myself. Have a great day dude
You might want to check out Sarah Park-Mattot’s video about what board for ride too. Came out a few weeks ago. She has some cool ideas about hybrid decks
I have a 7.3 and it feels so tiny. I have made very little progress. I can do rail flips and a few basic moves. Should I switch to an 8" or is that pointless?
You might just need time to adjust. How long have you been on the 7.3? If you continue to struggle, you may want to consider sizing up or changing the style of board you’re riding. There are tons of freestyle shapes/sizes out there these days
@@mike_osterman1 a couple of months I skate street too (8.25) so going back and forth is werid. Thanks for the help. I tried to order from you, but it was when waltz was sold out.
Nice video my man, but why make this video and make me want freestyle wheels on my setup when yall at Waltz don't have any in!? Thats a new level of evil my dude!!!! Just kidding, but I just broke my wrist 2 days ago so I aint in a hurry anyway lol Keep it up, wish you the best
I'd like to file a complaint! My jaw dropped when Juto did that coconut wheelie to _one wheeled coconut wheelie_ and now I can't find it. Send help ;-)
People walk through the park & walk up to me all of the time while filming. When I’m not feeling 100% I’d rather have it on than scramble in my pocket every time someone walks up to say hi
