here are the 3 REASONS WHY I STILL DON'T OWN A GRAND SEIKO. Grand Seiko is one of those beloved watch brands that I have a soft spot for. I've had several in for review, and I genuinely really like them! But still... Why haven't I shelled out the money to join the Grand Seiko life?
There are 3 big reasons why I haven'y joined the GS life: 1. Wearability 2. Design Language 3. GS Cult.
Please don't get me wrong in this video. I know I am really critical of GS, but I really do love the brand! As a brand, what they stand for, their history & heritage, the innovations of the brand like the spring drive movement. There is so much to love about GS! but it's when I put the watches on... They just don't sing to me. I want them to sing to me! they just don;t!
anyways, these are my sad reasons of why I still don't own a GS!

I once read an interview with a former editor of a defunct watch magazine many years ago. He was asked what he considered to be a good watch. His answer was simple: A good watch is one you enjoy wearing, be it a Rolex Yacht Master or a G-Shock. That simple response helped me understand and really enjoy watches. Sometimes I buy a watch because I love the way it looks, but if I don't find myself reaching for it very often, then I sell it and move on to one that I really enjoy wearing.

@@BrittPearceWatches Good video Britt, thank you for sharing. As a collector of 45 years of watches, I have no interest in the Grand Seiko. the movement will probably be equal to or better than a rolex, but it remains a seiko. With entry-level model for $100. Rolex only starts at 10,000. I think a Grand Seiko of 4000>10,000 is simply too expensive. it will always remain associated with the Seiko brand. You don't have that with Rolex, Cartier and Omega, etc., etc. Seiko also has a name in history, but the other brands are higher in their history. but I do care about a normal Seiko at max $1000

Grand Seiko really fits with the Japanese business culture. Look at them not as 'dress watches gone sporty'. But, look at them as the perfect business watch.

I have the snowflake and its my very first GS, i threw on a blue leather strap to match the blue seconds hand and wear it everywhere (formal/informal). Like what everyone has said, if you love the watch, dont let anyone else tell you otherwise. I just love how it looks and how you will spot different details in different lighting/angles. People will often take a 2nd glance at it cause it looks so subtle at first. Oh and with its accuracy, i never have to worry about it being off at all!

The big problem with Grand Seiko in my opinion is that their range is hard to understand: a lot of models with zip code names while all the watches look the same.

You make several excellent points. Even though I own a GS personally, and love the model I picked, I find other models completely hideous. It feels like the difference between appreciating the excellent execution, vs what you actually want to wear on your wrist. My impression is that while each individual aspect can be crafted to near perfection, the combination of those different components may not always mesh together well. It's easy to pick out just one detail that becomes a dealbreaker. Don't rush, and wait for that perfect piece ^^

I made a comment a couple of days ago here, just want to clarify a couple of things- I really like Britts videos.. She is smart and funny and the videos are typically delightful with someone who obviously has a love for watches.. I just felt to say on this GS video that Britt give the brand a little closer look.. In regards to what I said about not being willing to own a Rolex, that is for a few reasons. Rolex is very adept at keeping their values up not through innovation (they are quite behind in that area these days), but through heavy, sometimes even abusive management of their AD's. Where I live, there were 2 AD's close to me. One was a long time high end Jewelry and gift store and Rolex told them that they wanted them to open a new Rolex Boutique for them in a new mall. Rolex did not lease the space in this mall, the AD had to. And when they agreed to do this, the other AD in the other end of the valley had their dealership pulled by Rolex. No explanation, no thank you for being a reputable AD for the past 15 years, just pulled their dealership! Then after 3 or 4 years, with Rolex cutting inventories to a trickle, decided to shut down the Boutique they required the first AD to set up and lease and the dealer was required to continue the lease!!! Pretty shameful all the way around. That AD still has Rolex and has about 5 watches in their store due to Rolex shutting down AD's and limiting inventory to keep values artificially high. They can be very Hitlerian with many of their AD's and will pull the rug out from under them with little to no notice or why, dealers who have been loyal to them for years. I just can't support this kind of manipulation. They are leaning only on their ability to control inventory, they are certainly not innovating their watch technology. I think even Tudor is doing a much better job at innovating than Rolex.. And the innovation between Rolex and Grand Seiko, there is absolutely not even a question that Grand Seiko is by far the better innovator at this point..
@andyvu8513
@andyvu8513 Год назад
Steven - thanks for sharing and I cannot believe Rolex would do that to the AD's. To me, Rolex is a marketing company who happens to make watches. Grand Seiko is a watch company who happens to make watches. I am done with Rolex.

I 100% agree on your note about the bracelet. They’re really good, but not great. I recently picked up an SBGA375 and after putting a nice leather strap on it, it hasn’t left my wrist 👌. My biggest selling point was the fascination with the spring drive. There just this little feeling of joy I get from seeing the second hand sweep so smoothly that I don’t get with any other watch - i guess you could say it’s the watch I enjoy telling the time on the most 😂.

The confusion between sports and dress perhaps comes from the models you've handled. There are some very dressy 37mm options, and the SBGE25* series is all sports (no confusion), in a relatively wearable design. It'd be like knocking or reducing Rolex to the Explorer (1, not 2) or Omega to the Aqua Terra, which to me lie exactly in the middle too. I for one wish there was a commercial way to put a Spring Drive into a sub 40mm piece, without having the name Credor on the dial and 50k on the tag. But across the board they produce some highly wearable and identifiable pieces. Some of which do need a bracelet upgrade, for sure.

I love the inspirations behind so many GS dials . . . "This was inspired by the weeping willows of this particular park in this particular Japanese prefecture" . . . but like much of the Seiko Presage line (fell in love with their Urushi laquer dials), GS is often too big imo, and I think you hit the nail on the head with the design/identity confusion. Some of their dials like their popular peacock Hi-Beat 36000 GMT SBGJ227 almost did it for me if I was only considering visuals. But I'm not buying a 10k+ watch that I can't wear :/

I've had a few different GS models. My favorite is my Spring Drive GMT. It's a little too big, a little too thick, has a bracelet that doesn't taper enough and a clasp that doesn't seem nice enough. The dial is too cluttered. It's too expensive. And, still, every time I put it on, I say to myself, "oh, wow. This watch is perfect." For what it's worth, when I first bought this watch, I thought I had made a mistake. It was sort of a consolation purchase since I knew I'd never get a Rolex GMT. A year in, there's not a chance in hell I would trade my GS for a Rolex. I still love the Rolex GMT, but I've grown to love this spring drive even more.

Great video! I’d love to get a GS spring drive but just need to find the right one. Regarding versatility, I do like the fact that they sit in that mid ground of being part sporty and part dress watch. I find that I wouldn’t get enough wear out of a dress piece and sometimes a sports watch is too sporty. I feel GS sits well in the area of pieces that can fit with jeans and a t-shirt but also smart casual.

Very surprised to hear Britts comments on the Grand Seikos. I own Tudor, Omega, a JLC and I can honestly say that the fit, finish, polishing and of course the Spring Drive Technology far exceed the other brands I own. I'm sorry Britt but the GS is simply a step above these other brands in almost every respect and that would include Rolex (which I refuse to own). Have you used a loop in comparing the GS to pretty much anything else out there? The ONLY thing I don't like about GS is that they make too many models and limited editions. They need to understand that GS should not be the same as Seiko, where there are a million different models! But that is the ONLY think I don't like! I like and wear my other watches but my GS watches get the most wrist time and are just incredible and truly a step above them all!!!

Regarding your wearability argument.... Indeed. For a long while, they were too thick as well as 40.5mm large. This is why for five years, my only GS was a 44GS quartz iteration. I changed GS, bought two other case shapes, but only the 10mm thick quartz has remained, of those two. The bracelets however, are smashing. Don't screw with them too much. I hear you on the taper, for sure, but the clasp should not be modified. It is small, it is hyper comfortable. And with the half link system you can always find a fit. But can I draw your attention to 37mm versions like the SGBX259? It's 37 by 9,8mm in size. Then there are the SBGW hand wound versions, also at 37mm. These last ones are a pure dress watch shape. There is nothing confusing about it anymore. It's the purest 1960's dress watch you can humanly find, and they come in at the bottom of the GS price range. As far as the SGBX series goes, you pick 'm up for 2000 Euro's. I can't stand Rolex watches, nine out of ten times, because they have Mercedes hands, jubilee bracelets, and, in the case of modern Rolex, dead looking ceramic bezels. So that design language doesn't speak to me at all. That said, you do you, we don't need to like the same things at all. However, I am convinced there's a GS out there for you. My candidates: - SBGW283/281 - SBGX331 - SBGX259/265 They are simple, small, and far removed from a Rolex budget.

I've owned two GS watches, SBGM235, SBGH267, both with whirlpool dials. The best and worst thing about them is Zaratsu polishing. Any slight scratch mars the finish and getting it repolished ends up with you having to send the watch back to Japan. There's a guy in Poland who can do it but he has a one year waiting list. In the end, I sold both my watches and don't regret it.

I know what you mean about GS. Have come very close on the Snowflake a couple of times, but there are a few things about it that I just never get past. The width at the lugs doesn't taper aggressively enough, I don't want a date complication on a watch like this that wouldn't be a daily driver, the power reserve complication is neat, but also feels unnecessary on something that I wouldn't be wearing on the daily and both of these complications interrupt the beauty of the dial needlessly to me, which feels egregious because the dial is insanely gorgeous. Infinite respect for the brand and the people doing the work on these watches. I want to give them my money, but they aren't designing watches for me right now, and that's okay.

3:30 I know what you mean when it comes to certain aspects of the case shape. I love the angles of the "44GS" case but every time I see wrist shots, I see how tall and "chunky" it really is. Might I recommend something from their Heritage collection: SBGX263. It's much slimmer and less angular than its other siblings. Once I've experienced their quartz offerings, I don't want anything else. until Spring Drive gets smaller. 🤔😆

Another thing I'd add to pricing is that I would argue that it doesn't always make sense. When I compare two watches, like the SBGA465 and the SBGA293, I don't understand why the 293 is 400 dollars more. The 293 has a comparatively simpler dial, has the same 9R65 Spring Drive movement as the 465, and both have stainless steel cases. The 293 *is* a dress watch but that only comes through with the slight case shape difference and a leather strap. I'm not paying 400 dollars more just to call something a dress watch. Which is very annoying because I would want a watch of that style, but can't justify it. I'd be better off grabbing the SBGX347 for 1900 less and dealing with changing the battery every 2-3 years.

True. I agree with that. I think Seiko needs to find a better naming convention for their different watch models. They have so many watches, but most of them are named with random numbers and letters. It's hard to even keep track of or remember which watch I have.

Out of curiosity, were you able to handle some of the "Evolution 9" cases? (Yeah GS is terrible with the naming). I have the SLGA009, and it's a significant step above in terms of wearability. It's a similar thickness to a Rolex OP at 11.8mm but it wears really low to the wrist, a predominantly brushed finish pushes it more towards sporty and the way the brushed and polished facets meet is just spectacular. The bracelet is much better - more solid feeling with an ever so slight taper - but still not Rolex level and lacking micro-adjustments (strangely GS *HAS* bracelets with micro adjustments but chooses not to have them for most models). Also, not related to wearability, but the accuracy of the new spring drive movement is unbelievable: on my wrist I've only seen -0.5s after a *month*.

There is allegedly a GS boutique opening here in Boston at some point. I would like to see them in person because that confused dress watch point is I think well placed. As I have a little bit larger wrist, perhaps the bracelet issue would not be a problem for me. (I find the one on my SMP 300 Diver to be just fine and plenty comfortable especially given the weight of the thing.)

I'd choose GS over Rolex any day. It would have to be a spring drive model though. The only exception being the Oyster Perpetual Tiffany dial, absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately even if I did budget for it, it's now so over priced and scarce I'd be better saving for something I could actually go intro a shop and purchase.

I've bought five GS watches and sold each one within a year, so I agree. They are the ones you respect and date, but never marry. If it doesn't sizzle, it stays in the box and has to go. I think one problem for me, as a lover of tool watches, is that the zaratsu polish makes them very dressy and easy to scratch.

I found the mechanical models a shade chunky on a slim wrist....so I paid £2000 (list price) for a black dial GS Quartz SBGX261G. The body is a tad slimmer and sits flat...it's a get up and go watch. I love the heft and the excellence of the bracelet. The mesmerising shards of light that burst and flicker from the polished dial are an indication that it is no run-of-the mill timepiece . (Yep - I am fully bonded). The 'spring drive' GS models are worth a mention for the brilliance of their innovation.

Well, as a Rolex disliker, I do have to hand it to Rolex for their complete package. No matter Seiko or Grand Seiko, they always leave the bracelet and clasp sub par. The only issue I have with GS is the bracelet on the Elegance collection, in that the sports watch style bracelet is no match and doesn't seem right with the beautiful dials. Other than that I love GS. I have been fascinated by spring drive and also I was looking for another GMT so I recently bought a GS watch that combines the two. It has the GS generic bracelet style, which looks great on a sports watch. Blown away by the finishing and the accuracy of spring drive (has actually gained about half a second since I bought it a week and a half ago)

Great video! I started my obsession with watches with a Seiko skx007. Still a favorite. I have everything from micro brands......German....Swiss...and GS. I have the sbga413 you had on your wrist. Fits my wrist well. It is an old case design brought back. Think it is too large for your wrist. I have the sbga429 on the leather strap. Feels much smaller on the wrist. There are many GS that would fit you well. The bracelets? My seiko sarx 055 and 057 have nicer fitting clasps than my cherry blossom. I actually grow flowering cherry trees. Had to have this watch! For me..,the hand finishing and assembly is very cool. Not built by a computer and a robot. I enjoy Seiko and GS references to nature on their watches. But, they over due it a bit. Limited editions! Way too many! I don't really know enough about Rolex to make a video on why I don't have one. Really no desire to own one. I own a 64 1/2 K code mustang. Also a 2019 mustang bullitt. Completely agree most of the dials too dressy for the cases. Also agree about the prices, although for different reasons. I do think the watches are 'worth it' in terms of build quality etc, but the fact they release so many, and they are all so similar, it just makes me hesitate because I feel the next release is 2 weeks away and I might like it better. That said, I have bought a simple manual wind 37mm dress watch from them. It was about 4k and honestly the quality is breathtaking, way above my zenith that cost 3x more. It's not very versatile but when I do have occasion to wear it I often get mesmorised by it. The quartz options seem like good bets too because you get the same craftsmanship on the hands and the dial but for way less cash. Definately hurts a lot less to have an occasional wear watch when it isn't a 10k piece that could have been spent on something you are pysched to wear all the time.

i really wanted to like a grand seiko as i heard so many good things about it but honestly when i went to the boutique ... and upon looking and trying some models... even the snowflake... it really didnt spark any interest in me. you are completely right about it being confused if its sporty or dressy. plus the fact that most of the watches are chunky and thick doesnt help. the bracelet is also a big big let down. but i have a feeling grand seiko would produce something nice that id probably wanna buy 1 day... maybe in 10 yrs or so.
