I'm a very introverted person, but seeing this guy put in this much efforts to connect himself more with people who misunderstand him makes me want to tell this story. So just like a lot of other people, I was watching yt, scrolling through random videos and I came across his channel ( like 2-3 months ago) In the first phase, I always watched him sit and do his stuff for like half an hour and I would just leave. I had zero motivation and stuff. I would just pass my days like this while having zero motivation, and wasting all of my time. Even though I didn't sub to his channel, his live would still pop up on my yt feed. So just like any other day, I was watching him do his work but that day, this dude had an exam. Here comes the *LEGENDARY* (at least for me) part. So it was break time according to the stream but he was in the middle of the exam. I thought that he won't talk in that break but guess what, dude was talking with chat during the break. So everyone started asking him, if the paper was easy and stuff, and he said "yeh pretty easy, finished 75% of the test already" even when it had only been like 20-30 mins. This THIS goddamn became a wake up call. When I saw this I felt like, bruh I also wanna do this. I wanna reach that level too. See, in the end HE IS A HUMAN and I am one too. If he can do it, why can't I? That's what came into my mind. Seeing how he was so chill during his exam, even having time to read the chat and stuff. I felt so prickled by that, so jealous. I did not take that jealousy to start hating him, I took that jealousy to start working and push myself towards being productive because I wanted to be like that too. I started watching his stream after that, I couldn't sit for more than 3/4 sessions (whereas I was able to study for like 4 hours straight without any breaks before the pandemic, i.e. like 1 yr ago.) I introspected so much as to how much this online lifestyle ruined everything and the one to blame for it was ONLY me because it is not like everyone became like this, no. There were people who still did what they wanted to do everyday, just like James. That's why I hold myself responsible for being this way. I was so god damn distracted, even if I sat and studied for like 3/4 sessions, I still remained so distracted. I had to clap every now and then, to regain my concentration. With time, I gradually started studying with more concentration and for more hours. I also look forward to 10 hours of study everyday! So from this story, all I wanna say is even if you're jealous of the fact that you aren't as capable or as focused as he is with his life and goals, that doesn't mean you have to dislike the video and spread hate, you can take motivation from him and push yourself forward or you can think that I wanna beat this guy and be more productive than he is! That's all. Thank you James! Hwaiting! :)

I was also in the military and returned to college after i was discharged. Actually, while studying, i didn’t know why i should study. Then one day, I saw the video you are studying by the youtube algorithm. Although we have different countries, ages, and backgrounds from which we have lived, I was motivated to see you working hard for your own life. I read all the advice you gave and the books you recommended in the video. And it helped me a lot. Thank you for making me motivated for life and making me live hard. I don’t live as hard as you yet, but i’m working hard now. As you said, you’ll definitely buy a nice house for your mom, you’ll be a good dad, and you’ll be a good computer engineer helping people in need. Finally, thank you for uploading a good video and i pray that you are always healthy and full of good things in your life. Bye~

James - when I saw your "how I sutdy 12 hours a day" video, the first thing I did before watching it was check your channel. When I saw that you've been livestreaming this every day for a year, I went back to the video and watched it all. Whilst it's motivating to see you do this, it's also something else: it's you proving that you can do it. That's what was far more effective. You didn't just make a video on how you studied for 12 hours, you have literally been at this day-by-day for a whole year, you've got proof of work right here documented on this channel. Everyone will warn you about burnout, and it's a good warning. But ultimately, you know what's going through your head more so than a stranger in a comment section. If you're able to keep doing what you're doing, then don't let others who don't know you sway you the other way. Everybody's different. Best of luck with hitting those goals man, you deserve it 🙏

12:59 Thank you James for this statement. I often see teenagers in western countries enjoying their life with great amount of privilege. Here in India most of the teenagers know nothing other then studies. The parents and environment is all set to make them slaves of their studies and then jobs. It's now common to see students collapsing because they were not slept and just doing their studies. Also their life is way harder then western students, they don't have facilities to study. They learn, get degrees, roam here and there for jobs and finally get into tech assembling factories, assembling i phones and stuff 12 hours a day for another country. So, yeah to my western friend: when ever you see an Asian celebrating his countrymen's achievement pls don't think they are flexing, they are just happy for his hardwork and sacrifices.🙏

@Shimmy Shai you need output what you read/study/see to really learn... if you keep just inputting things in your head, you will keep forgeting. output things is really discomfortable, but it's the best way to learn things and know what you really don't know and need to focus to learn a concept. feynman technique is one of the most discomfortable way to learn, but one of the fastest and effective way to learn... if you put your soul in do it. @Shimmy Shai you need to process each concept from the book and output it. you don't need to remember every word in how it was written. one concept can be shown in innumerous ways. @Shimmy Shai I would recommend active recall. You don’t need to memorise a whole textbook to do well in an exam. What you have to do is be able to apply your knowledge to an exam question. If you don’t continuously recall the knowledge you will forget it.

Right now what people see in you is that gut wrenching work, that gritty work ethic and it makes them sick to their stomach because they can't see themselves working that hard. People are used to being average and even below average, so when they see someone like you being so far above average it scares the living crap out of them so they begin to criticize instead of praise you for your grit. @Shimmy Shai To answer your question, both will obtain their goals. It isn't about the time put into studying, it's about the effort and focus it takes you to retain the information you are learning. We all learn at varying lengths and even different subject matter require varying times. For example, it does not take me long at all to study history or English grammar but mathematics is a different matter because I don't grasp maths as easily. Also, we all have different learning styles or ways in which we learn best, some learn better by listening to lectures, while others learn better by reading books, others have to do something active like pace as they review notes. What matters is finding what works best for you, it isn't about how long you spend studying. Also, studying isn't about competition, it's about what you get out of each study session. You put in the effort and take as much or as little time as you need. As an educator, I have seen some students hardly open a book yet retain the info while other students have to put in long hours. Just find what works best for you.

Not everyone is privileged enough to rely on AP classes and a GPA which you can improve even if you've messed up. We dont get to do projects that require stand alone thinking. In the end it boils down to how much you can memorize, and it's not an easy task if all of your textbooks are 1500 pages. So, if you feel like 12 hours is too much, then I'm glad that you're able to achieve your goals in a lesser time period. Everyone should take into account that the more hours you study per day doesn't always give you a good result. This is something subjective, as James has mentioned, it is something that cannot be quantified. So each person has their own study style, maybe for James studying 12 hours per day is the best, but maybe for someone else 6 hours is the optimal amount. Find your own style and stick with it.

The big problem with all of this is that the world is not a meritocracy. Your success is not directly a result of how hard you work. By centering your entire life around being different and working harder than other people you’re setting yourself up for failure, whether or not you get the success you want. Believe me, I’ve been there. I’m first gen and my entire childhood I worked for college admissions. I got into a top 10 school in the US. And I got nothing from it. I felt good for a bit but it wore off. And after moving in and going to classes I realized I was not surrounded by as many smart and hard working people as I thought I would be. Many were there because of certain privileges and even people who had done a lot to get there were spending their time partying and messing around. Working hard or being talented just didn’t matter as much as it should. All of these thoughts sent me to the worst depression of my life. There’s no panacea for finding success and happiness. But “working hard” is the wrong message. I’d say to work *enough*. Find out what you need to do and don’t push yourself further. Doing so will lead to disappointment and resentment toward other people who achieved more than you despite doing less. Even if you work hard and achieve everything you set out to, you still have to live your life. And if you base that around work then it will never stop. You’ll always find another goal or something else you want which will lead to working constantly. If that’s what you want, cool. But I don’t think its noble and it’s not advisable to other people, no matter how unoffensive your motivations sound.
