Why is Only One Burner Lighting?

Grill Girl is answering your grill questions on the fly! This video gives one possible answer to why only one burner would be burning when you turn your grill on. If the carryover tube is in the bottom of your grill instead of doing its job lighting the rest of your burners, that is probably the answer! The good news is that carryovers tubes are inexpensive and easy to fix!

I was at a hunting store a few years back and bought a brush that cleans pistol barrels, I think it was a .357, and put it thru the crossover tube. I couldn’t believe the amount of dusty debris that came out but the bbq was works fine afterwards.

There's a video about cleaning the inside of your grill. Here, I'm focusing on carry-over tubes. Thanks!

Greetings from Puerto Rico. A strange thing is happening to my grill, i can use the first burner but if i try and start the second one, the first one shuts down.

Hi, this definitely sounds like a regulator problem. Try resetting it by turning off the tank and then removing the hose from the LP tank. While it's still connected to the grill (but disconnected from the tank), open the hood of your grill and turn on all valves (knobs) to high. Wait two minutes. Then attach the hose to the tank and turn the tank on slowly. If this doesn't fix it, you may need a new regulator and hose.

Miss Grill Girl, Thanks for the video. It was exactly what was wrong with mine! Once i cleared out the debris inside I was good to go. One more thing….make sure, unlike me that the crossover is installed correctly (ie: right side up or down)!

I have a 2009 Genesis, last model to have horizontal burners. I wish I would have waited for the new 2010 Weber Genesis with the vertical (front to back) burners LOL. This year (2021) I am having an issue with my back burner not igniting on a consistent basis. The front one is the first to get lit. I can hear can flowing for the rear burner when I rotate the knob. I just now thought to test with a BBQ lighter to see if I can light it manually. Otherwise, I just have to get it lit when the lid is almost closed. Yes, I know it is not ideal. So, it sounds like this carry over tube may be clogged. I have not taken a brush to it yet to see if that resolves it. I really noticed it today when I was trying to cook a couple of Italian sausages to go into pasta sauce. After a half hour, of what I thought was front & back indirect, only the front was on. What a pain in the neck!

Hi Grille Girl. I have replaced the burner and carryover tubes in my grille with, ostensibly, exact replacement parts from the manufacturer (Kenmore). The one burner with igniter works fine, but the carryover tubes aren't doing their jobs. For some reason the "kit" omitted instructions and, additionally, the burner tubes weren't drilled to show where carryover tubes should be installed. I guessed, wrongly apparently, by drilling and installing close to gas orifice, about 4 inches from the near-end. Any suggestions?

Hi Grill Girl, I obtained a used Weber grill a few weeks ago and I am all of a sudden having a problem with the Primary Burner only lighting 2/3rds of the way across. I just watched this Video and my problem is just a little different. My 3 burners run left to right and the Carry Over tube is down on the left. Now, after turning on the gas and striking the ignitor, the gas lights on the first burner, but stops as soon as it gets 2/3rds of the way across the whole burner, just 1/3rd short of lighting the Carry Over. It's as if something is all of a sudden Blocking the gas from going ALL of the way through the burner tube. Any ideas?

First thought here Bil is the regulator. If it is an older grill, it's a great idea to switch out the regulator as you clean it up and get ready to use it. Regulators go bad over time so you will often see this symptom of looking like there's not enough gas for the burner to light fully. If this is a natural gas grill, yes I would think some blockage. I would disconnect everything and use some pressurized air to clear out the manifold, the NG source and if possible the burners themselves. Let me know what you discover!

Hi Rahul, it could also be the regulator. Try resetting it by turning off the tank and then removing the hose from the LP tank. While it's still connected to the grill (but disconnected from the tank), open the hood of your grill and turn on all valves (knobs) to high. Wait two minutes. Most carry-overs have screws that keep them in place. Usually any metal screws that are the right size will work. Here's a video about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8VCjLJJSTCE.html
