I have heard the hymn sung at several sporting events professional , college , etc and churches it was written 1899 not new release! Perhaps the uproar is because it was song at the Super Bowl with worldwide coverage & sung in conjunction with the anthems written prior to 1899

Also, calling it The Black National anthem triggers due to the a bit of Black history is being revealed via the words of the poem/ hymn.

Well actually, the NAACP adopted it for the beauty of the words being written in a manner that other oppressed peoples could identify and they have, as many cultures around the world perform the song. And with the NAACP being an interracial organization speaking out for all 'colored' peoples, it wasn't considered "exclusively" for black people only.

They have biblical references designed with the intent to show that blacks are the Israelites. The song is written about our coming exodus from captivity, the "chastening rod" of slavery, and a plea to not return to sin that we won't depart from God again when we return to Zion. That song in it's entirety is not meant for everyone regardless of what the NAACP may use it for.

So if every ethnic group in this country wrote and sung a song that they call their national anthem what would you think about that? Would you stand for all of them? Or would you be what you call people racist for not standing?

I thought this country was built and stood for the rights to be free and live the way you wanted.. I call racist to those that won't allow people to live free in this country and try to make others conform to their way of thinking... For example I have the right not to stand for the national anthem and hold my hand over my heart if that's what I want to do, but to others that would be looked down upon, look at all the hell Kaepernick took just for kneeling.. But by the same token if others wanted to call me racist for not standing for the national anthem that's their right as well ... So if every ethnic group wanted their own national anthem they would have that right living in "free" America ... @56Norman - Exactly! That’s exactly how I feel. The song is precious to me and to many of us. It means nothing to them. As with anything that is precious and dear to you, you should want to protect it; you don’t want just anybody handling it. Especially because - as you so correctly stated - others will only try to destroy or exploit it. I continue to hope that one day we will be able to truly value that which comes from us without having to have it validated by white people. BTW, I feel the same way about Juneteenth, which I have been observing since back in the 90s. I didn’t need white people to know about it, approve of it, or anything else. Maybe one day we’ll learn - when we have something of value, it’s probably best that they _not_ know about it.

That’s honestly beautiful and honestly a bit less war mongery than the American National Anthem. I mean it was written during a siege, or more at the end of it. I mean it seems to almost romanticize war in the lyrics “the rockets red Glare, the bombs bursting in air”. As far as I’m aware it was only written because the flag was still flying at the end of the siege.

Everyone knows about black history. It's crammed down our throats at every turn. We know how your own people sold some of your ancestors into slavery. Why should this give you the right to have your own "black" anthem? You're causing a division. The regular anthem is for everyone, but you want a distinct anthem which means YOU are separating whites and blacks! You are being racist.

Notice on any tv game show that when wypipo lose, if a black question was asked for sure, you can trust and believe it was going to be their death knell! They absolutely do not know or care to know our part of American history.

This is not correct, with all due respect. It was not written in direct response to blacks singing the national anthem. It wasn't even a song, but a poem or more of a prayer, having lots of religious implications and cries about the mistreatment of the American Negro, and he had Dr. Washington and even President Lincoln in mind when he penned it. The NAACP adopted it and asked Johnson to write music for the freedom piece.

In America, nothing has or will change. This anthem was written in the early 20th century as a cry for acceptance in America during Jim Crow. They didn't sing this instead of the nat'l anthem of the country that they were 2nd class citizens in, but rather as their rallying cry for freedom, justice, and hope that things will change. You can easily look up the lyrics--it was adopted by the NAACP as a poem and music was written for it. Blacks were fighting and helping America win their wars and coming home to their south and getting lynched. This song addressed their disappointment. Just go read the poem.
