Really a 500k pay cut. Yes he could have signed a 5-year, $269 million deal, but instead with a 3-year, $117 million deal, with an opt-out clause in the fourth year, he’ll have 10 years of experience and can potentially sign a 5-year, $439 million deal. This means he’ll earn $556.56 million over 8 years, compared to the $557 million he would have made with the original 5-year deal extended to 8 years for comparison. He’s taking a significant risk because if he gets injured, he might not be able to sign the next lucrative deal. Additionally, he’s losing some money due to interest and inflation. So, in reality, he's probably giving up around $1-2 million. However, the way his contract is structured gives the Knicks a lot of flexibility right now. Definitely a selfless move. Love this guy

i think this is a poor take. This is good for the league. Even if super teams get formed that’s what all casual fans and some diehard fans secretly want. There is a reason viewership is higher when dynasties are playing. The main complaint this year was this year’s finals had no aura. Parity is good, but the fans don’t want parity. They want all time teams they can root for or against

Exactly this. Basketball ratings were highest in Jordan era. It dominated the cultural zeitgeist. I think you’re missing something important here… He didn’t REALLY take a pay cut, he makes more money in the long run with a 3 year extension now and re-signing in 2027 than he would extending next offseason, because if he extended next offseason for 5 years and wasn’t up for an extension again until 2030 presumably he wouldn’t be in his prime anymore at that point and couldn’t get a big money deal. So instead of getting one max 5 year contract he’s opting for a near-max 3 year contract and then an even bigger max 5 year contract. Yeah it does help the Knicks with cap flexibility in the short term, but Brunson will also make more this way himself. It’s a win win.

$100+ million PAY CUT super INSANE
@Barak144
@Barak144 Месяц назад
He didn’t take a pay cut he literally got all the money he could get when he signed that contract at that time. Taking a pay cut would be him taking less than he actually got. He wasn’t promised to make it to next summer unscathed. He took the money in hand at the moment. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. He helped his teammates be able to resign so he can continue to play with his teammates and they can stay in NY. But he didn’t take a pay cut he took every dollar he could get right now which was wise.

I wouldn't worry about this becoming a trend. Brunson is the best player in the biggest media market in the world playing alongside his 3 best buddies from college on a team where his dad is an assistant coach and his godfather is the president of basketball ops. There literally has never been a player in NBA history in a more perfect situation and that's why he took the paycut

I agree with you, Brunson is in a position which is completely unique to all the other stars in the league and New Yorks cap space is in such a place where it makes a lot of sense why he would take the pay cut, they surrounded him with his college buddies he’s absolutely adored by the fan base and New York is such a large market that it’s possible he could make up that money later down the line with endorsements or a new deal a year earlier than if he waited. I don’t think we will see other players take pay cuts that large just due to how unique Brunson’s situation is.

The reality is that many players that aren't superstars were getting max and supermax deals. In my opinion, the fix is to limit supermax deals to multiple All-NBA first team players, I'd say at least 3.

I think he chose the safest option because if he didn't sign it now it would mean that he would bet on himself for another year with all that wear and tear under Thibs and if he ever got injured he would get none of that. He basically chose security over being the new Isaiah Thomas if things went wrong because brunson is also a small guard so if he isn't 100% offensively he has almost no use

It’s not a pay cut if he never had the money. He will already be making generational wealth so arguably no real tangible difference here. With that being said this is still very very commendable and one of the best moves I’ve ever seen by a star.

Missing a couple things. By the time brunsons contract is up he’ll be eligible for the new 5 year max extension of 400 million. If the Knicks win a championship they will pay him his money. He’s taking a bet on himself and his guys and I’m sure at the end of it they’ll have the ring and ability to get one big contract after this run is up before they start to fall off a bit.

Let's be realistic, How many NBA Players do we actually think is gonna want to take a 100+ million dollar pay cut. Jalen is on a team with his best friends, and they have a real shot of winning a championship. We also have to look at the fact that he plays in NY. It won't be hard for him to get endorsement and billboards from other avenues. I don't see this become a norm. For example, do we think that a Ja Morant or Anthony Edwards will take a 100+ paycheck to stay in Memphis or Minnesota to keep their team afloat. Hell, Anthony Davis would even do that in LA, and Harden just got an extension, and he just got to LA. I believe it works because of Brunson and the personnel

His decision is admirable, but it really shouldnt be encouraged. You should pay as you are worthed, but those business wolves are going to take advantage of it and tried guilt trip another player doing so. The other scenerio could be this action provided him with a lot more off court opportunities, his investment can alot smoother and make up for the difference. The last NBA legend who took a significant payout to help out the team, he still regret it, Scottie Pippen.

@shorewall
@shorewall Месяц назад
I understand your point, but I disagree. Taking less money works against the player's interest. Winning championships works in the player's interest. Deciding to take a pay cut in order to win, with nothing guaranteed, when contracts ARE guaranteed, is never going to ruin the league. It will never be widespread enough to tip the competitive balance that way. Even if it did, even if 4 teams had super duper teams, and everyone else was no good, it would be like the 80s, when the Lakers and Celtics were going for the chip every year. I don't even think it would be a problem, and it definitely wouldn't last. Look at Harden taking less with Philly, and then getting frustrated and forcing a trade. Nothing is guaranteed, except guaranteed contracts. So a player like Brunson taking less to give his team more options is admirable, and I hope he gets rewarded with a chip for his efforts.

In football you stated that teams can still win championships when your paying top players top dollars. Which simply doesn’t happen. Once a quarterback is paid those teams usually no longer have the depth to win because the qb is taking too much of the cap

First off, that "100 million dollars" is way overblown. It's a year shorter, so it's more like him taking a 30mil or so cut. Undersized guards are notorious for being bad after a nasty injury. He locked himself into a big contract a year earlier, that way if bad luck hits him this next season... he's got plenty. Then his last year is a player option, so he can opt out right (like you mentioned) for a big veteran bag. He will be about 31 at that time, and if he's still healthy he will def be able to sign a 4 year max and a much much higher number. On top of that, all of his friends from college are there. He helped keep the team together. I personally call it a win for him, not he turned down 100 mil.
