I just listened to Steel Panther for the first time. I had seen their album's for sale and I thought to myself are they trying to introduce modern audiences to what metal was like in the 1980's. Not that I'm complaining, I love the 80's. I was born in 1983, I missed that side of things, for me it was all about cartoons. My first exposure to Heavy Metal was Cherry Pie by Warrant in either 1989 or 1990. Whatever Steel Panther's intentions are, I think they're actually pretty good. I haven't bought any CD's for a while and maybe I'll look at buying their albums from the beginning. Rock on 🤘 👌 😎

Don't get why all this rage about hair metal. Most of the people who listen to Ratt, Crue, W.A.S.P etc. also likes bands such as Megadeth, Judas Priest, Motorhead and so on.

But it’s not true. It’s just Dave who owns the name Megadeth and will continue to milk it forever. Meanwhile those other guys moved onto different projects, even solo work, to satisfy their creativity. So the ones that are alive are just as much “still here” as he is. They just had the sense to break up “the band” when it wasn’t the same band anymore.
I love how he acknowledges that they were great musicians but bashes them simply because of their image. Who cares what they look like? I think thrash metal people cared more about the image than glam rockers TBH.
It's true he outlasted some of those bands. Jani Lane, who they showed at the beginning, is dead, so he isn't in the game anymore. Steven Pearcy, 65 yo, of Ratt is still doing gigs though. Dave is only 60, so we'll have to see if he holds up and does a 50 year anniversary tour like Rob Halford, 70 yo, is doing.

I agree. But I will say that at least Kiss wasn't following a bandwagon trend like most of the 80's hair bands were, Kiss were one of the pioneers of what they did and they had good music.
True, we fan loves the glam metal era as well as thrash scene. That include other genre such as speed metal etc. It's just a matter of individual childish opinion from Mustaine or hetfield or other thrash musicians who think their style of playing is more superior than others. No disrespect though to these musicians

I didn't like the image but I loved the music. I lived in Hollywood in the mid 80's. I tried out for bands but no matter how good you were they wouldn't even look at you if you didn't have long hair. So many players Had to go with the image or not get a gig. It got ridiculous with the makeup and clothes.
Glam is not a real music genre. It's just a label for bands that looked a specific way. Mostly melodic hard rock bands from the 80's. Yes, Bon Jovi, Dokken and Europe played melodic hard rock, while bands like Mr. Big or Cinderella were mostly making straight edge 70's hard rock, only plus the big eighties drums and production. Poison is and has always been a power pop band. Crüe & Ratt: just 80's heavy metal + the looks. GNR: a slightly grittier Aerosmith. Glam is not a label for music, just a way of putting almost every 80's band in one box.
Thank you! This is absolutely correct. Whilst one can argue about the particulars, this is absolutely correct in broader terms. Just look at the state of things around the turn of the decade. You had bands like Great White, Winger, Nelson and Skid Row all being considered glam, but how much do they really have in common musically? The later term hair metal is of course even more nefarious, and here it is possible to piece together a history of the term. Early references limit it to the generation of bands following in the wake of Poison, yet over time its use has been expanded to the point that bands like Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and (get this!) Slayer are starting to be included in extreme cases. Of course, it was made by people who hated the genre, and wanted a term to brush over nuance and to limit discussion of the music as music. We would be far better off dousing the term in napalm and setting it ablaze.
I'm a thrasher since 82. We went to the glam shows to score the hot chicks. Thrash and punk shows were sausage fests. Pantera was glam AF back then,and they were the only local band that always had a crowd.

Back then my friends and I were into it all up until the late 80's and Poison/etc emerged, doing their predictable sell-out metal and barely a hint of masculinity left (Crue/Ratt wore makeup but retained the strong male warrior-ish vibe; Poison were just pussies). And for the record...love ya Dave, BUT...those bands are indeed mostly still around and doing fairly well. Cheers.

Metallica moved up there from LA. Mustaine was back in LA after he got kicked out. Later they moved to Phoenix area. Now Dave us in TN. Dave just had to put up w/ crap in the scene when glam was king until it fell off. Industry town. Anybody that was into real metal knew the glam stuff was going away
Says the guy wearing a flamey jacket with tassels. I was big on thrash as a teen in the 80s: Slayer, Bathory, Venom, Dr. Know; etc. But I didn't mind some Ratt songs. I'll say though that I never cared for megadeth. Something was lacking in their songs, and the singer was annoying as fuck.
Ratt were one of the few good glam bands (at least the early stuff) a better example of bad glam would be Poison or Bon Jovi. Basically 90% of all glam made after 1985 sucks.
No they weren't. They were a fun band that wrote quite good pop tunes, drawing surprisingly widely from the legacy of American popular music. If you look at the poppier side of the scene as a whole, it is competely unsurprising that they rose to the top.
I agree with Dave. We wanted to hear stuff not played on the radio every 5 min. Megadeth and Slayer sounded way more better than an attention mainstream band. Especially on a 1980s getto blaster. Like Pantera says..against the grain
Personally, I draw a distinction between bands like Ratt, Twisted Sister, and Motley Crue, who were all decent to good heavy metal musicians, and the barely disguised pop bands like Warrant and Winger. The latter were neither good hard rock, nor good pop. (And yes, there are good pop rock groups; you just have to know where to look for them). Twisted Sister toured with Motorhead and Metallica, so you can't tell me they aren't heavy. Granted, even those hard glam bands are generally a little more melodic and radio friendly than New Wave of British Heavy Metal or thrash metal or punk rock, but they could still crank out some fairly hard and heavy tunes. At least Mustaine acknowledges that some of those glam bands were good musicians. He just didn't care for their effeminate images. Well, fair enough. Although I'm sure some of the shaven headed hardcore punks thought that even thrash musicians, with their long hair, were too "girly" too. 😆
Are you seriously suggesting that Mötley Crüe were good musicians and Winger were not? You are aware, I assume, that Kip Winger was cutting records not only with Alice Cooper but with Bob Dylan before anybody knew who he was, that Rod Morgenstein was a member of the insanely talented Dixie Dregs and a professor of drumming at Berklee, and that Reb Beach ironically had worked as a session musician for Twisted Sister? They and Mr. Big were probably the best musician bands in the scene.

I would disagree with your assessment: it took me a while to get them, but once I delved deeper into the material I found that there is a wealth of ideas in the music that belies the pop-oriented style they were working in - and more so for every album they did. They may originally have courted a female-oriented audience; today I suspect that musicians make up more than average of their crowd.

IDK, the really big ones, like Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard and Guns N' Roses are still playing to huge crowds. Once you get into the medium range things get messier, but I sincerely doubt that, say, Nuclear Assault is making much more money than Ratt touring in 2022.

Yes Dave, the best way to dominate the world is to essentially "write" Metallica songs 6 years after Metallica wrote them. Literally not an original idea or tune in the whole bands back catalogue

Peace Sells, Rust in peace , Countdown the Extinction and Youthanasia quartet can be considered better and more original than anything Metallica has done in total. It is quite normal to use common melodies with Metallica's old band. Metallica has already used his materials many times. Also, if I compare the albums they made in the 2000s, Megadeth is more successful. Metallica has almost only one album with a decent sound during this period, Hardwired Self Destruct. Metallica, on the other hand, is by far a much better concert band, this is indisputable.
