This is the problem with electronic control systems. There are a lot of parts dealers making an awful lot of money from used vehicle control systems. Look up John Deere's support policy for farm machinery. They won't give you the tools for diagnostics, you have to take it in to an "approved dealer". Diagnostics is easy if you have the info. Repair is easy if you have the circuit diagrams. The old days are gone when electronics manufactures gave you maintenance manuals. There is a whole industry on the sidelines that works on aftermarket circuit maintenance. The other issue is you buy your own diags program for a hell of a lot of money relatively speaking, and if you then have a major mechanical issue that makes repair uneconomical you have to upgrade your truck and the old diagnostics is not suitable for the new machine obviously. It's s money making game that will bog you down.

The dealerships and good shops dont use car docs they have more detailed diagnostic equipment of cousre cost more

AJ Encalade. I call bullshit on that one. You can buy a Snap-On labscope on ebay for 2k. Unless your truck is less then four years old, the software will probably be included.

thats whole point where they get you Dee without the diagnostic program you just guessing but call that dealer ship across from sun petro in atlanta i think its hrc trick sales they showed me a catalog and explaned i just need tools service manual and 8000$ diagnostic if i buy a newer truck each make engine has a diagnostic software etc detroit cummins cat each have a software if you have a detroit then sofyware may cost 4 to 8 grand plus bluetooth remote link hookup to send info to laptop where software is installed they make being able to diagnose on your own very expensive see for example you may have to change a sensor but in order to reset after replace you need the computer to reset codes or check engine light will stay on which is out of service for dot scales most of the time only mechanics and big ballers are able to afford the software because it cost 4 to 8 grand when i become owner op i will gladly invest that you see you may work for a company who lease they trucks from like volvo from time to time you will see a volvo tech with a laptop hook up to the ecu checking each truck for problems seen or unseen as.fix or just preventative maintensnce

also dee cheap is not the way on this you would be wasting your money you would be spending money on a useless software that wont read or truly diagnose electrical issues from sensors to mechanical problems

He had no power to the truck. No laptop or software would work because the diagnostic port needs power. He would have to track power from batteries to ecu. Service manual better investment. My opinion.
