What makes Sergio Perez so good on F1 street tracks? All of his wins for Red Bull have come on street circuits, and across his whole career the numbers show that he's more competitive when the walls are closer to the edge of the track.
In this video we explore what it is about his driving style that makes him so well-suited to street circuits, and we explain the key factors behind his most recent win on the streets of Baku in battle with Max Verstappen.

I don't thinkt that would work. People always have part of their car off the track on turns because only one wheel needs to be in the circuit. That variability allows max to get more speed, or at least I imagine he is able to because of that. You can see it in how checo hit the wall in t15 trying to make the turn as wide as possible. He is able to maximize the space withing the walls.

Ah, the Rosberg special. Except Rosberg was actually able to outpace Lewis on traditional track, meanwhile Perez only shines on street circuits and he is invisible on many other tracks. Max would need a lot of DNFs to make up for Perez's shortcomings and that's with no one else coming into the mix especially towards the end of the season. One important factor you missed is one of the most important to a racer. Vision. The close walls of street circuits allows you to keep your vision up by gauging corner apexes using only periphery vision. In open tracks you need to look down to the actual apex, which is distracting from your attention further down the road. Also there is a physical limitation that a moving eye doesn't form actionable imagery for the brain to make decisions with. Shifting focus takes time. With a strong peripheral vision, you can gauge the corners much more accurately then those who have to shift focus.

So, when a driver retires from F1, but still wants to compete in car racing, they HAVE go to a less prestigious category. Simply because F1 is the pinnacle of car racing. So when you leave F1, the only options you have left are less pretigious classes. EVERY SINGLE F1 DRIVER who retired from F1 ended up going to a less "prestigious" category (if they wanted to continue racing). For example, eleven time F1 GP winner Felipe Massa, for example, went to Formula E and later to Stock Car. F1 legend Barrichelo is also competing on Stock Car (he's a two time champion there). Which why your idea of "not prestigious enough" makes ZERO sense. So the guy is out of F1. He has retired from F1. He won't go to less important classes. So what's he gonna go? thats one of the reasons perez is quick in these types of tracks, he is the tyre whisperer, he was one of the few who managed to keep his tyres in the right heat span, also, in all reality, perez's tyres should have been overheating more than max's in the first stint, because he was tailing a driver with dirty air, its just that, once again, perez is the tyre whisperer

I think a lot of it is that Max does struggle a lot on street circuits, he's always said this in interviews, and it makes sense as Max is a driver who likes to push past the limit, then tone his driving back slightly, which obviously cannot be done at street circuits. Sergio is obviously very talented at street circuits, but I'd also like to see Max's comparisons to previous teammates on street circuits.

The main problem Checo has had in the past is development went heavily towards Max as they were fighting other teams for the title and he was spending far too much time trying different setups trying to find something that he could use. This often meant sacrificing some performance for stability and so Max was always going to have the advantage. I feel like there is a handful of proper race tracks that Checo should be naturally very strong at and if he can't do the business at these places, it's going to be near impossible for him to beat Max over a season. I live in hope though!

I always thought that it was much harder to race on street tracks than road courses. You need more concentration because of the walls/Armco. You need more race craft as well. It’s harder to be faster on street circuits so why can’t he win on conventional tracks? He has great tyre management and he is one of them best late brakes on the grid. I think this year he will do much better than previous years simple because the car is more neutral than over steery. His biggest concern is reliability
@22masz
@22masz Год назад
i think it's in a sense easier to drive. the route a driver needs to drive is already pan out because of margin of error the walls. just when you see the driving lines during wet races i inmagine with paint most drivers follow the same lines; in a one stopper in hards its also hard to find grip most drivers need to drive out performance. if the entire season was on street circuit people would adapt. but to me in this format street circuit with one stopper on hards is the least competitive setup of all the possible setup. kinda like nyck de vries performance in monza last year; if you dont put a foot down you "win"
