Why Spooky Stop Motion Movies Are Beyond Brilliant

I've always loved stop-motion movies and for a variety of reasons feel like the animation style itself is something so brilliant and perfect for Halloween and spooky movies. So in this video, we're talking about how the animation style helped Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride become incredibly memorable movies.
I know this isn't my normal content, just wanted to try doing something fun for Halloween :)

Hey! I hope you're having a good day :) I wanted to do something fun to celebrate Halloween and talk about one of my biggest long-term interests: Stop Motion. While I talked about Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride in the video, I'd also like to give an honorable mention there's many other works of stop-motion that are fun watched around Halloween. Like: Paranorman, Wallace and Gromit Curse of the Wererabbit, Wendell & Wild, and many others. If you're just into stop-motion in general not just pertaining to spooky Halloween vibes, I realllllllly recommend Fantastic Mr. Fox Anyways yeah I know this is different from my normal stuff but I really wanted to do this video as a fun little thing for Halloween :) I hope you enjoyed it! Have a great rest of your day!

@@user-qv2mc3dw5o Yes ofc! I just wanted to express in this video how the art style happens to work perfectly for spooky narratives. Not that it's made for them, just that it compliments them. Coraline being stop motion is why I hate when people keep suggesting that Coraline should get a live action remake. The movie being stop motion is what makes it special, a live action remake would make it lose the charm it has.
@Gay4545
@Gay4545 8 месяцев назад
I do get where ur coming from but I feel like coraline live action would either be a terrible idea or a good idea depending on whether they go down the disney Pinocchio renake route or scary stories to tell in the dark route in terms of level of effort being put into cgi or how soulless it could turn out I do think coraline should stay stop motion but i think a dark visual remake of coraline could be fun as well
@CordeliaWagner
@CordeliaWagner 8 месяцев назад
We already have to many bad soulless live action remakes. A remake makes sense when new technology can improve a movie like for example Lord of the Rings. But I don't see hoe Coraline could be improved, and Hollywood nowadays will make it a political preaching with some Narcicissts self inserting themselves.
@Gay4545
@Gay4545 8 месяцев назад
@@CordeliaWagner I don't see how that would be possible for a coraline remake Worst thing they'd do is maybe turn coraline black but like she'd still be a child and coraline already has black/mixed characters anyway so I doubt they'd need to make coraline black Like idk what they'd be inserting considering coraline has a female lead and is pretty female centred
@CordeliaWagner
@CordeliaWagner 8 месяцев назад
Looking at how soulless Disney remakes are: I am very sure someone will find a way to make it boring. Plus female leads aren't the Problem of today, it's overpowered and often toxic badly written female characters. And writing male characters as dumb and weak. I think Coraline is perfect as it is and doesn't need a live action. There are thousands of other good stories to make a new movie of.
@Gay4545
@Gay4545 8 месяцев назад
@@CordeliaWagner yh and I was saying that coraline is already a good female lead that can't really be changed much I do agree with about not wanting a coraline remake but moreso bc they're probably just gonna do the same thing as what they did to Pinocchio: Remaster it line for line, change absolutely nothing and make it look abhorrently souless The worst thing they could do is make coraline less of a bitch to wybie Also, female leads are not the problem, it's how they write them and they're literally just doing what men often do when writing male leads: they make them dumb and almost useful (they're only use being sex appeal/love interest) Not saying its right but what I am saying is that saying "female lead bad" when in actually its just writing gave me flashbacks to guys trying to criticise jennifer's body Sorry I went on a little rant I've just seen too many guys saying "female leads are bad" "we need male leads back" Nothing wring with male leads but they can be equally as bad as "not like other girls" type of feminism

You know, since we’re on the topic: it’s funny how “2D animation is dead”, when in actuality; it’s claymation that’s really the “dead” one. Because at least with 2D, movies in that form still do release, not as much in feature films, but way more when it comes to tv shows and such. Claymation however is basically what people say about 2D because there is never a time these days where we see claymation, either in feature films or tv shows. It’s just not that common when you compare it to 2D. But hey, that’s just my point of view. Besides all that… Pretty good video👍🙂

I used to be a stop motion animator. Im a 3D animator now but I still love stop motion. I feel what makes it such a great medium for horror films is the fact it uses puppets. Puppets have a reputation for being kind of uncanny and these films definately seem to take advantage of that.

I used to have a tradition with my cousins. Though it was mostly a coincidence. We would watch the Nightmare before Christmas every Halloween. For 8 years straight, no breaks. Our folks would get together to play mahjong while we kids sit by and watch Disney. We'd have late dinner, sweets right after midnight, and some of us would conk out till morning. It was one of my most comforting memories ever.

Also, stop motion seems to be the more timeless than any other style of animation especially CGI. If you watched The Nightmare Before Christmas in 2023, would you honestly think that it came out 30 years ago? Most likely not because it doesn’t feel or look like it came from that time period.

Verschlimmbesdern is when you have the best intentions to fix or improve something but due to bad circumstances, wrong materials or lack if competence you end up making it worse than before. I grew up on Nightmare on VHS, then DVD, THEN as a seasoned adult, like early 30's, I got it on Blu ray, and holy damn! The textures! But I think, when comparing that to Coraline and Corpse Bride, is that the filmmakers did not intend for Nightmare to be seen in such crisp definition, and its roughness was just kind of an accident, but like, a beautiful one at that! Its a raw movie! And that really helps it.
