Why you should Use SBR on Patios and Paving.
SBR is essential to your work when using certain stone products.
It helps strengthen your mix, reduce salt stains, protect porous materials and helps the slab adhere to the base more effectively.

Even better with a sprinkle of cement in it for bonding paving down worked great on some slate for me like

I have some Indian sandstone slabs which need relaying. Do I just brush this on the slab or actually mix it in?

We mix it with cement and a dash of water so it can be applied with a paintbrush...not too runny tho. And use water to keep it workable till it's time to batch more. You'll know how adhesive it is if you don't wash it off your hands as you work...sticks like shit! Plus, sponge it off any paving surfaces you it might get it on straight away. Had a bad experience one time...learned from that mistake 😅

Hi I'm repointing yorkshire stone paving will this help to stop penetrating water and allso douse it strengthen e.g when it comes to power washing will it hold up better with sbr in thanks rob

Hi Rob mate sbr is a water proofer so it cannot hurt

Got to agree with tranquility landscaping. Using it like that isn't anywhere near as effective as making a proper bonding slurry with cement and water. It works best as an additive. As for workability, buy a small forced acton mixer and leave it in it with it on. The much larger amount of water in a slurry will help prevent it go off to quickly too, unlike a 6:1 bedding mix.

stop the moisture being sucked out of the mortar and sealer, be safe

Got it. Thank you. Having trouble finding SBR producer in USA. I've also heard that installers in UK make a white portland cement slurry and simply add a sealer to it. Have you ever done that? Is it effective in preventing moisture being sucked out of the mortar?

SBR cannot prevent effervescence. The SBR can act as a barrier to the product of effervescence. But to paint the SBR on the back of a slab is not very effective. Far better, and as recommended by most manufacturers, to mix in a 50":50 water cement slurrry and apply generously with masonry brush to back of slab. Let is go off a little and then lay. The SBR in the mix will be a far more effective barrier to effervescence.

Thanks Dawn for your response, there are times when effervescence occurs in the manufacturing process in concrete products also in sand so by applying an SBR this can reduce the possibility of it, To be honest we are requested to use the SBR by our suppliers and if we do not our warranty is void. Respect your view. I worked for Blue Cirlcle/LAFARGE for 30 years as chemist so I am very aware of the why/when/how and where of effervescence and painting the slab with SBR will only provide a very poor quality physical barrier. In time, this will breakdown and the effervescencing flux will literally be pumped through the areas where barrier has failed. In time, the flux will creep across the underside of the slab between the slab surface and the SBR and this will break the bond causing the slab to shift. Good luck.

Dawn thank you so much for your response.. it is with out doubt you know your stuff.. you would not be beleave how much information we get over the merchants counter.. I would love to chat to you regarding this so we can fully understand it.. would that be pissible?
