I'd just posted my WWDC 2021 iOS 15 for iPhone keynote reaction video when you all started commenting - raging in the comments! - about iPadOS 15. So, I scrapped the video I was working on about that and, instead of talking about my thoughts, I decided I should listen to you and answer your questions and concerns.
I asked you why you were angry or disappointed about iPadOS 15 - what specifically you were angry/disappointed about - and you let me know!

As a professional in the investment and estate planning field I need the second screen filled to illustrate docs, video, or keynote presentation. Keynote does support full screen. The bigger the screen the easier for people in the back of the room to see. If I am away from the office and need these functions and more then I also need to use my iPhone camera to host a zoom meeting in 4K for best professional look. I also need the size of the iPad to navigate through the meeting app. Using the iPad camera if I am looking at the screen makes it look like I am not looking at the attendees. Subject matter changes so constantly trying to memorize each presentation becomes a job all on its own. So seeing the presentation they see is needed, seeing them is needed and using the best mobile camera is needed. While the direction tHey are going is correct I need it to be recorded and kept for a industry required period of time. I want the freedom to move between these tools, iMac, air Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Right now it is not yet there. My best camera is my iPhone but iPad will not let me choose to use it, even if I hardwire connect it.

There’s a lot of frustration about this WWDC. Apple Developers have pulled out their pitchforks up against the disaster of concurrency programming with Swift. Apple really did mislead developers and overhyped their features. This years WWDC completely missed the mark on many levels.

This problem isn’t going to go away. It will only get worse Imagine what happens when M2 and M3 iPads release in 2023, 24 etc...? The iPad Pro, especially the M1 is obviously targeted towards heavy and pro iPad Pro users, beyond the demograph that just browse and do some light computing that don’t spend so much money on highest end iPad Pros, they get the regular line and are happy with it. We all know heavy iPad Pro users have been very specific on the MacOS features they want over the years or even call for MacOS for the M1 iPad Pros. Many don’t care if it was for logistical, streaminlining or marketing reasons Apple put the M1 in an iPad “stole the M1 for the iPad”, the point is. iOS is not cutting it doing MacOS’s job for the high end M1 iPad Pros. It’s getting ridiculous paying so much laptop specs and prices and having an iPhoneOS providing an inadequate experience pretending to be a desktop OS. Apple can either make a hardline between M1 iPad Pros and everything below to satisfy two demographs iPads with iOS and M iPads with MacOS or continue catering to iOS and lose iPad Pro users who spend far more money. There is no reason to upgrade to M series iPad Pros beyond the 2020 iPad Pro

Rene, I get this is meant to make me see Apple’s point of view, but it still feels like you’re apologizing and making excuses for Apple. I personally know 3 ppl planning on getting the iPad Pro based on what they announced at WWDC, and I know 2 that bought it as soon as it was available. All were disappointed, and the 2 who bought it, now can’t return it (Apple knew ABSOLUTELY what they were doing there.) I would have returned mine, had not been in the very FORTUNATE and UNIQUE situation of having a Dad who works at Cupertino, who heard my disappointment and surprised me with a base model Mac mini so I can take full advantage of the iPad Pro as it stands. I’ve accepted the iPad Pro as it is, and maybe one day my dream, since before the first iPad was even announced and we called it iSlate, of an iPad that can fully replace a laptop comes true. But it doesn’t change the fact that iPadOS 15 feels like it’s playing catch up in many regards to the iPhone, or the fact that many ppl who would otherwise return their newly bought iPads, now cannot.

Yes this is very refreshing. I am becoming increasingly fed up with big shot tech RU-vidrs whining because not every device is made to their exact requirements. Agreed. Rene is the only tech writer analyst that gets that it’s not about the 5-8% of advanced users. Makes total sense that the iPad is its own thing, not the desktop replacement power users want. I mean, Apple is here to make money, and the money is in the 90% of the users that don’t need Xcode and final cut pro on an iPad. If you want that, get a Mac or laptop. (I mean, if it was early to execute, wouldn’t Apple or a competitor have done that by now?) And Rene’s point abt these power apps coming to a web interface makes more sense long term because then those apps will be iPad accessible, and improves workflow and your productivity between desktop and iPad when you aren’t at yr desk/office.

@Team inT I agree with what you are saying. The irony with the other people in this reply thread is that it's comprised people complaining about tech RU-vid... On tech RU-vid. I honestly don't think we're asking too much. There is no reason iPadOS cannot scale like MacOS does from the person buying the lowest spec Mac Mini and checking email to the top of the line Mac Pro encoding Pixar movies. Just give us the apps we need and improve the core parts of the OS such as Files, multi tasking, etc. Don't just catch up to iOS from a year ago. Even if Apple gives it features specific to Pro device users. @Dinky Shop says Apple needs to follow the money and cater to the 90% but what happened when Apple let the Mac fall by the wayside? The people that made the Mac what it is raised hell and now the Mac is in such a better place than it was just 6 years ago. Guess what? Everyone reaps the benefits, even non-tech RU-vid. Further more, if y'all want to play candy crush on your $300 iPad, feel free. Meanwhile the rest of us want to get some work done on our $1000+ iPads because Apple named them "Pro."

I was expecting this episode to bring out the braying masses and it is encouraging to see the opposite. Tech RU-vidrs seem intent on taking the same line as each other in their videos. When did they explain the pressing need to bring MacOS to iPads? But that did not stop them from predicting it or even suggesting that is what the market wants. Be glad Apple stays on a mission to bring the best OS to each of its devices.

I do agree but some more knowledgeable tech RU-vidrs actually see what the market wants and not just what just what enthusiasts or pro creators want (for example putting Mac OS on the iPad sounds like a very god idea to the enthusiasts or the pros but then most families buy their kids iPads for schoo and not phones so families will have a very tough time using it , but some creators did say iPadOS should grow as its own thing and not just slap macOS on the iPad )

@fallsdp

And it can be. Do your parents have iPad Pros? I believe the pro should be able to run virtual machines…. This way, the pro can do it all. The other iPads would not have the hypervisor program. The hypervisor should allow machine emulation and allow pass through from the thunderbolt 4 port. A virtual machine running MacOS would allow programming for the iOS devices. This one thing, if done right, would literally make almost everyone happy.

@@mg00 That Apple isn't a charity is no secret. At the end of the day if we keep buying from them they're doing something right. I don't think they want to differentiate software for users. They want users with basic iPads to have access to as much of iPadOS than those with more expensive Pro devices. But they want the more advanced features to be there for those who want it, increasing the tablet's unbelievable flexibility. And tbh, I personally don't want a different OS on my iPad Pro. I think that iPads are great precisely because they are simple, yet powerful. I think that the sense of fun and wonderment on iPad comes from those moment when you can create complex things from simple tools. For example, running Photoshop or even Excel on a desktop can do everything you could possibly want. Yet, why don't we enjoy using such programs on Windows or Mac? Because the complexity makes it boring and feel like work. I think they did a pretty good job adding capabilities to the OS while staying true to that vision of a simpler, more fun version of computing. Now we just need external monitor support!

Far from me trying to impose “my” needs onto you, since my preference is how the iPad was designed to operate; you are trying to impose your needs onto an already existing architecture. I noticed Netflix goes full screen on TV when you launch it on the iPad, but then it stops playing the video on the iPad screen, kinda changing the functionality, almost as if it’s being Airplayed. So apps can do optional implementation, but it shouldn’t come down to the individual app, should be an OS feature. Especially if you can’t use the iPad without removing the video from the TV, and yet the audio continues in the background (buggy) but it goes back to mirror view.

Except I can’t…… No one in the industrial world uses Mac or iPad to do work…. iPad is used for teleconferencing, ticketing, PDF viewing, emails, and browsing. Yet, general programming, PLC programming, security systems, badge ID systems, Bidirectional OBDII code scanners, and most other nuts and bolts stuff is done on Linux and windows. I cant even do complex IT work on iPad because apple tells app developers that they cant have an app on the store that exposes MAC addresses. (A MAC address has nothing to do with Macintoshes) A MAC address is something contained in all Ethernet devices. So my Ubiquiti app and my Fing app can’t show me the MAC addresses of devices on my network. Yet I can use safari on iOS and go to my ubiquiti system webpage and see it all. So Apple’s stupid limitations do nothing. If apple simply gives me a hypervisor app and lets me run VMs….with pass through via the port….that would solve everything for me.

How about YOU pull your head out your ass and realize the price for the top of the line iPad Pro increased by 25% from last year. $2400.00! For that kind of money, it had better be able to damned well do just about all I want in a ultra portable form factor. Yes, I want to program on it. I want to run virtual machines on it. Just what do you use one for? Do you even have an iPad Pro? Do you plan on getting one? The dang machine has more power than the servers that ran companies not so long ago. In 1998, the Home Shopping Network was running the shipping operations of its largest fulfillment center on a DEC server running a Pentium Pro, less than a gig of memory, and three 200gb scsi drives in a raid 5. It was running NT4 server and SQL Server of that era. The 2020 iPad Pro in my hands now is way more powerful. So how about you, Ben, pulling your head out of Steve Jobs’ dead ass. This platform has sooo much potential and Apple has never realized it. I had the 1st iPad….even then, it was hobbled by artificial constraints.

Yes, every Apple event should pause after every feature and Apple should explain why they did that as in this new era of complaining about everything, every possible take on what someone sees or says, Apple needs to try and make sure no one is upset by something they never said they will do but because YT influencers claimed it was happening, they should address it and apologise and offer therapy from the Apple Store? Or maybe people should accept what Apple does and what Samsung does and choose what is best for them? If those on YT do not understand they are a niche techie community and that Apple has to succeed at the core level of consumers then they are rather self-centred and will forever be disappointed? And what are all these comments about "pro" and M1, these are all marketing and we are all grown-ups and to get upset when a pro labelled device is not pro-enough is ridiculous? Though no one whined about the Galaxy Book Pro not being "pro" so maybe it is just something Apple gets trolled for?

In fact, I don’t think I would really want that. I would rather the Mac get more iPad like features like better cameras and Cellular options. It seems like Apple is somewhat going that direction with the Mac without the Mac losing what makes it special. And you’re totally right about the iPad being perfect for the rest of the market. That Steve Jobs speech was a good point for it's time when touchscreens in general were new & foreign. But now, since there are 4 versions of iPads...the regular, the air and the mini can be those "easy to use" tablets. The problem with the "pro" moniker is people view it as a machine capable of all our needs from casual to extreme. but really the iPad pro is just a spec'd out ipad air with an os that severely bottlenecks it. The Macbook air can not handle extreme workflows so thats why they sell spec'd out Pro's with an os that allows it to be used to it's full potential. But the iPad Pro does not have an os or apps that allow it to be worthy of it's name. So it's time they gave the people what they want and stop telling us what they think the iPad Pro should be...
