A friend of the family asked me to look at their iPad recently because something wasn’t working right and I noticed they had like 30 instances of the Mail all over the place. I’m exaggerating, of course, but this is a person who’s super smart, taught at university, but just never got computers never understood them. Avoided command lines entirely, struggled with graphical interfaces, but when the iPad came out, that was it, the perfect computer for them. Finally.
Something simple. Intuitive. Full screen. Focused.
But year after every couple or few years, layers and layers of capabilities have been added, but with complexities to match, and many of the same problems they had with graphical interfaces, the ones the iPad initially solved for them, are coming back. With a hefty helping of near-constant gesture collisions on top.

Well said. As an IT guy from the late '80s programming, scripting, building PCs, and much more I finally bought an Apple for my home use somewhere around 2015. I'd been using Apple computers since the early '90s in my work, but felt I could not afford the Mac at home. But my decision to switch was due partly to get out of the constant buggy nature of Windows, a desire to use the computer more rather than maintaining the computer and it's OS, and to stop upgrading all the time. I knew Apple would bring that to my existence and it has. I still use the same iMac, about seven years now. Amazingly displays haven't gotten any better than my 5K display. At this point the processor will limit my ability to upgrade to the latest MacOS, so I will have to face an upgrade in the next couple of years. But the tablet is genius for most people. Even my SO, who can barely use a computer, loves her tablet - to the point that she ponied up her own money for one! After I'd passed along my older one to her, she decided to buy one newer than what I currently use! Funny, but certainly she's after the simplicity, ease of use, and the ability to consume content. Nerds came out against tablets precisely because they weren't great content creation tools. Well, get over yourselves, most people have never created much content! Leave them alone, let the tablet be what it is best at, a device for content consumption and secure interaction with the various tools needed to make our lives easier, like online banks, credit card accounts, utilities, home automation, the list goes on. Again, well said Rene!

I think Apple should add a ‘Pro’ switch in iPad settings which is turned off by default. The majority can use their IPad as Jobs intended and those that want more options such as multitasking can turn on. Could even be option to turn on when attached to Magic Keyboard only.

After nearly a year trying to bend my 12.9 iPad Pro to be a PC, I now see your point. Part of why I love using my iPad as my main PC (I am a software developer) is how the OS gets out of the way and the apps I need work well. I found the best balance is, use iPad as a thin client or dumb terminal to remote into a traditional PC for big boy work. I think there is zero heaviness to the iPad. It's as simple as can be to use. Yes, there are definitely some improvements that need to be made but my kids understood how to use it in under 10 minutes. It was the first device I introduced them to for school and it wasn't hard. There are some users these days that make technology harder that what it needs to be and use the excuse "I'm bad a technology" as a crutch for not learning. As an IT I see this behavior everyday. I think you are 100% right about a small amount of people who do reviews skewing the narrative on tech. It seems like its the cool thing for tech RU-vidrs to want to bash Apple Products these days. Max Tech and Zone of Tech I think are leading this. If you bought an iPad for the average person who doesn't watch this stuff they would say "Wow" instead of 'I should have gotten the M1."

After trying to teach elderly parents how to use technology, I wish UI designers would reconsider the trend of hiding controls. For example, to pause a video you have to hover the mouse over the video or tap the video first for the controls to show up. For email, the reply button is tiny, and the print button is hidden under a "..." menu. For old people just starting to use technology, these can be insurmountable obstacles. Make the controls prominent and always on. Thank you.

I dunno, I love Stage Manager myself, it’s far more flexible than before, without the windowing system being hard or intimidating to use, and being able to have multiple instances of apps running at the same time is much more freeing than before, it’s way better than having them suspended like before, especially since it can be used with apps not optimized for side-by-side windowing (like games or iPhone apps). It made me love my iPad once again, it’s useful both with or without a mouse and keyboard, it genuinely boosts my speed and productivity with my iPad, leading to using it way more fun. And if you don’t like it, just turn it off. I don't really see what the fundamental problem is, since it comes disabled by default, so those who wanna use it can turn it on and enjoy it, and those who either don't like it or don't know about it can just carry on and have the regular iPadOS experience.

Very well said Rene. In my 75 years on this planed I’ve run that whole gamete you mentioned, from boxes of punch cards on the computer at the university, through almost all the microcomputers, on to windows and Mac PCs to where we are today. Though I have a 12.9” iPad Pro, I still long to have a tablet that’s simple to use for my daily computing needs like mail and social media. Though I’m very computer literate - even taught computer technology at the university level - I find most of the multitasking techniques on my iPad get in the way. I’d hoped that Stage Manager might be the answer, but based on what I’ve heard so far, it’s just as bad and perhaps worse than what we have already. You’re idea of two operating systems for the iPad is great. One could be for those who want the simplicity of a tablet and the other would better serve the needs on the nerds and “power users” who want professional level apps on a tablet. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening. I guess we can still hope that Apple and others figure it out. Thanks.

And this will get even better when we get full external display support.

Rene, you just nailed the very top reason I miss Steve Jobs so much. Steve would’ve kept the iPad on-mission. Since the very start of personal computing, Steve Jobs was the advocate for exactly the user you describe. It took years for those users to know someone was fighting for them. Thankfully, he got to enjoy some of it and nothing made him happier than pleasing that kind of user. Every single time I go through 7 submenus on my iPhone to block a phone scammer, I think of Steve. He would not just have put that into a single command like a device-shake, he’d go terrorize the carriers and global regulators to get them stopped altogether. It pains me to say it but Apple is slowly but surely forgetting how to be “insanely great.”

First of all, Stage Manager is turned off by default, which means it doesn’t replace full-screen-based experiences: Split View and Slide Over. And it is still limited to certain iPad models. So you don’t have to use it you don’t like it. For those reasons I don’t think Stage Manager “ruined” the iPad experience. I don’t see why Apple added this feature to iPad though.

I use my Apple paid developer account to compile / sideload apps, such as ScummVM, Dolphin emulator, UTM (OS emulation) app ... , not available in the App store. And even then, some of those apps must run in tethered mode on non-jailbroken devices, so I had to compile jitterbug with my developer ID, so I can run e.g. UTM tethered via an internal VPN to the same iPad Pro it's running on, rather than needing a second device Apple device! I want the newest, latest and greatest M2 iPad Pro, but I bought the cheapest M1 iPad Air because the usability and experience between those 2 devices will feel identical. When I upgraded across generations of iPhones I felt the difference, when I upgrade across newer generations of PC’s/MacBooks, I feel the difference. I see the future of tablet use as something similar to what Microsoft Windows Continuum or Samsung Dex is able to pull-off, multitasking/stage manager just feels hampered for all the tablet-focused reasons you mentioned. I think the future is the option to toggle between “tablet mode” (non-stage manager conventional iPad interface) and a “desktop mode” that enables the best features of a cut-down MacOS (as they are familiar in MacOS, not something ‘new’) - in Apple’s quest to reinvent the wheel they’re trying to play 3D chess with their customers, be everything at once while still distinguishing the iPad features (not drifting too close into MacOS territory) and the experience is suffering - hardware far outpacing the potential capabilities of the device for us nerds leaving no value proposition for new hardware to increase individual productivity.

And maybe that’s the point, to drive people like me to the iPad Air, maybe driving customers to the high-margins on larger quantities of iPad Airs have always been the goal - release “Pro” series options, knowing only a select few will buy these things either out of ignorance or pure desire to have “the new one”, but the only real goal is to uplift the value proposition for their mid-tier models.

Can you do a video on the bugs in iOS 16. I haven’t and others have not been able to use the lighting to hdmi dongle since the update. We are being overlooked by Apple and the ppl with bigger voices. The is very crucial to our way of life especially for the trucking industry and for people that don’t have access to Wi-Fi.

The strength of the iPad is its versatility. It is in the middle of a computer and a phone. I see a lot of youtube videos of iPad being used as their computer, gaming system, camera (yes some do) a gps system and etc. So for people saying “if you want MacOS then buy a mac” is like inhibiting its full potential especially if it carries the same chip as some powerful macs. I hope Apple will fix the iPad especially the multitasking part. Let us use the resizing windows the way its supposed to be or listen to multiple audios without the videos stopping. iPad has its potential, but thats it. Just potential!

Thank you for saying what I have been trying to get a cross for years. We are a minority and the average user doesn’t need nor want these extra complicated features. This is a solid case for a differentiate between iPad and iPad Pro. iPad is simple and more for the everyday consumer, and iPad Pro has all the bells and whistles that us nerds want/need.

Amen, Rene... iPads have gotten ridiculously more complex over the years as Apple (half-heartedly) tries to transform them into a "computer". They should keep the non-Pro iPads as simple as possible and add whatever complexity they feel is needed to the Pro line ONLY. They do that on their iPhones, why not iPads? I own a Mini, which I like, and I'm happy that many of the new windowing features are not supported on that model!

Perfect explanation of the iPad and it's users needs. Except for the idea of dual boot which would make it necessary to buy an iPad with a bigger ssd which is an added expense most people wouldn't need. As someone who has an iPhone, an iPad and a Mac Mini, i find the iPad Pro 11/12.9 exactly perfect for most users period !! 1. I can create and edit docs in iWork or by using OnlyOffice, which creates docs in both Open Office format AND Microsoft Office format. 2. I can split screen on it. 3. I can now connect it to a TV/monitor and have it open full size on the screen. 4. It has the Apple pencil. 5. I can use it easily enough with a Mac keyboard, mouse/touchpad as a cheap, portable and convienient option to the Magic Keyboard. 6. I can use it for content consumption. 7. I can use it to save everything to my NAS quickly and easily. 8. I can create and edit photos/videos with apps that have features that are more than enough for even some of the most demanding home users, and now with an albiet slightly trimmed downed version of Da Vinci Resolve available as well ?? 9. Add in web browsing, email, calendar and this describes all the needs of the vast MAJORITY of people. I absolutely LOVE my iPad, way more than my Mac Mini for EVERYTHING, IMO it is the perfect computer in almost EVERY way, kudos to Apple. The only improvements that are really needed are OLED display and longer battery life.

One possible correction is to SJ “stretched the iPhone to make the iPad”. I think it was the opposite. Here’s why: In 2002 I was at uni and struggling with disabilities limiting my work. I couldn’t afford a Microsoft tablet (£2k) and was an Apple fan anyway since my first Macintosh, the “Portable”. I replied to a comment on the Apple forum that what I dreamed of was Apple to make a tablet (fantasised really, because there was no sign of even the iPod at that time). Next day I had a stern email from Apple advising me my comment had been removed and not to speculate again about Apple’s product development or I’d be barred. 😮

I understand the constraints of a mobile platform, but I have always hated gestures. Back in the day, an evil of UX was "mystery meat" navigation, where something represented a UI element but gave no idea what it was actually for unless you hovered or clicked it. Gestures are the same thing, except without even an indicator there's something there.

Always great insight from Rene. But the unintended consequence of just porting desktop OS to tablets would result in less innovation by professional software manufacturers to rethink their software paradigms. When pro software is rethought for touch-first, those innovations can trickle down to consumer level versions of the software or new software. Therefore, encouraging large developers to create tablet versions of their software will actually grow all segments of the market and allow the platform to develop. I don’t think bifurcating the user base is ideal as a result.
@DomainObject

The unfortunate reality is that we are not getting that “professional software” that you speak of. Or, more accurately, what we are getting is a trickle… (DaVinci Resolve, and… *crickets*). How long do we wait??…
@dfa4
@dfa4 Год назад
@@DomainObject I should have provided more context. Professional software is not limited to video editors. My company develops B2B app solutions. One of our clients is a medium-sized real estate firm. We have an existing macOS and windows app, but we offered to develop a custom iPad app since they wanted to deploy tablets to their field staff. As a result, we invested in a redeveloped software suite for the firm. Now, the staff considers the iPad the most powerful computer they’ve ever used because it significantly improves their professional workflow. In the field, they can upload real estate property pictures, edit the inventory database, prepare and sign documents, conduct video tours and conferences using the front and rear cameras simultaneously (and watch ESPN while waiting for clients! Shhh!) We are implementing AR functionality so that they can do virtual staging based on the potential buyers' style or corporate branding theme. We can also use LiDAR for automatic floor plan updates and measurements. Now, we are trying to return some of these features to our desktop applications for the other office workers. I understand Rene's point was that the tablet is a consumer "baby" OS. But that is not necessarily the case for the entire tablet market. We develop pro apps for medical offices, production studios, and other enterprises.

Apple could implement a legacy iPadOS mode for those who want its simplicity, and for those who’d like macOS lite with touch, have a Pro-Desktop mode with free-form window management. There’s no need for a one-size fits all approach, just have different modes of operation and let users choose which mode best suits their needs. Stage manager in its current incarnation needs a ton of work.

you nailed it, but I can’t to be honest with you when I feel terrible saying this, but I feel like before you took this job and you were on them or you’re kind of part of the problem. And it’s not even really a problem to me the iPad is just in. Should be simplicity personified. The idea that it needs to run what’s on the desktop I think it’s just absurd. I have tried a surface laptop and I know you could say well it’s Microsoft but I will tell you that there are just certain things you don’t need to do with touch and the idea that the iPad and the laptop/desktop can do both is perfect. Yes, you might spend a little or some extra money but it’s not important because as you said, the majority of people use the iPad for things that they need you don’t need all the complexity. Two senses I feel like Apple is trying to be everything to everyone and at the same time, almost creating a situation where there are nothing to no one. I love the new MacBook Pros and the way they work, and how fast they are in the battery life. As somebody that creates to have an iPad Pro as a second monitor is a blessing and I don’t want it to be like a laptop but everybody’s different but I do agree with you, I feel like a silent minor or a very vocal minority is making them or wanting them to change things and I I think the iPad is near perfect the way it is.

We've seen nerds-driven features spoil many other categories before. As early as the 70s, I've seen audiophiles buy ridiculously expensive audio gear, able to reproduce sounds that only their dogs could hear. But the mainstream buyers wanting a simple audio system had to cut through the crazy specs-oriented rationale sales people were giving them. Specs that were more useful for "after-the-sale-bragging-rights" (called reinforcement in marketing terms) than for real enhancement of the listening experience. The subsequent wave of mp3s proved that very few people were attached to the high fidelity thing after all. All of that to say I agree with your observation Rene, Apple seems to have lost interest in true simplicity as a marketing segment.

Definitely, my parents can no longer use their iPhones and iPads. As they moved more to gestures and away from skeuomorphism, they became more baffled. Granted they got older, but they could have continued to use the things they'd already learned. But Apple delighted in making the interfaces more obscure, and they couldn't follow.

I think, in this day and age, younger people are used to Windows interfaces where they can touch their laptop screens. Apple has a different view on the laptop. There was marketing that went like "What is a computer" with a young person laying in the grass watching and using an iPad. I still think the confusion started when Apple put the M1 ("computer chip") in the iPad. All of a sudden, me included, demanded that I could use the iPad as a laptop. I had the keyboard, the pen and iPad but it did not run Windows. Here we see how the vision of one company influences other companies to get a similar use from a device. I was all over the: I want proper external monitor support.... and Apple delivered (not because of me but I got on the hype wagon). Then monsieur Richie made a video about who the iPad was targeted at and why our expectations needed to be more realistic. That video is still in my head, and Rene was and is right. "But the iPad is so powerful and I want to video edit on it... it is called a Pro so that justifies that" was the outcry. Apple, once again delivered, maybe not as fast as people would like, expectations were met and all of a sudden there is a new outcry that the new ways are not stable and are not compatible with workflows. Of course, this is where the word "yet" comes in. But is this really what a majority of users want / need? An average user, my wife, she loves the iPad to watch movies, do some correspondence and chat with family members. She loves the silly TicToc and says, with pride, she knows an influencer. To her the iPad is a fun device, quick, has a seemingly light operating system. We need to stop being so confused, I do not see Apple change their ways anytime soon on the touchscreen and I am okay with that. Oh, it is so beautiful to touch my wobbly screen, I can even fold it all the way around and it becomes a tablet.... Hey... that is so 2018 🤣

I'm even extra in favor of having the option to run MacOS on M1/M2 capable tablets. I'd even be in favor of a new product category for it, like a resurgence of the iBook, something between an iPad and MacBook for the education sector at a really solid price point and available to the mainstream if they want it, but at a little extra cost.

Great commentary! I keep running into reviews and recommendations of tech evangelists who insist that laptops, tablets and possibly even smart watches must all be able to operate as fully functional desktops. A corollary to this is that all these devices must be able to run games at the same level of performance. This sometimes leads to unhelpful reviews which criticize a tablet or phone for not doing something it was never designed to do. Also features are overlooked which might absolutely dazzle the average consumer. I use a laptop for work, and have one for use at home, but unless I need the laptop for a work specific task, I am more likely to use my tablet or smartphone at home, even to do some research or note taking that might be work related. And there are some apps I use on my smartphone that would be pointless to reproduce on a laptop or desktop. I hope that companies like Apple pause and reconsider the possibilities of tablets as something other than a desktop in disguise.

My only grudges with the iPad is the inability of installing software outside the apple store, the ridiculous limitations on emulation/virtualization software, the complete absence of development environments (no, Swift Playgrounds is not a IDE) and the impossibility of selling services outside the apple store. Allow that or stop pretending that the iPad is a computer when is just an appliance, like a game console.
