I’m not depressed because of my phone, I don’t care about likes or anything, I just want friends and a girlfriend but I’m not good at socializing so I’m lonely.I’ll try to get friends and a girlfriend after quarantine tho so while I’m depressed I’m still hopeful and a little excited about the future and stay strong because life will get better trust me.

I think basically this generation is depressing because everything comes down to COMPETITION.. who has the best job, car, body, looks, boyfriend /girlfriend ,phone etc.. and the list goes on! Instead of focusing on their own journey... they let the media affect them and and puts pressure on them.

And just to contradict you, I'm one of those boomers that grew up in the wake of the Beatles, Timothy Leary, LSD and all that went with that, so my 'work ethic' is zero. I've made a career of doing as little work as possible. Life's too short to waste it making someone else rich.

I always hated getting participation awards. To my mind as a child, they kind of solidified that I had failed. It felt like a "loser branding."

In 1983 after graduating college you had a job in your selected field, in 2018 you graduate college with four degrees and a PHD and you work flipping burgers at McDonald’s, maybe that’s why half the population is depressed

I often deliberately ignore my phone, when I'm eating for example. I mainly use my phone as a phone, I use very few apps & I am not on any social media (garbage). My friends will squirm when my phone rings and I don't answer. They ask "are you getting that?" and I say "No, you're here, they aren't and I refuse to let them barge in my life when they feel like it".

I've watched many of your videos, new(ish) subscriber. But I must say, you are probably one of the most smartest men alive. The information you have put out really helps everyone understand things in a more "easily and understandable term". Kudos Thought2, you are awesome.

I am a final year baby boomer. 1964. I work with some young people who fit the gen Y category. Some of them are brats, but most quickly learn they have to work hard to get by and end up being amazing workers. Lol. I did know this one young guy who was perplexed as to why only managers could apply for a particular position at my workplace. And he was going to apply for the position. After all of us laughed at the idea, he applied. Then he was confused as to why a 19 year old kid with no life experience or leadership training was flat out rejected for the position. After all his older brother was put into a management position straight out of school. His brother works for a very small company only employing about 5 people. Unlike the company I work for that employs thirty thousand+ employees across the country. But I figure, well done for at least trying. But he quickly learnt that participation awards aren't given to people at workplaces.

Funny, I grew up being told that I needed a college degree to get a good job. I spent yeas in college and got out only to discover no one was hiring. So many companies advertise jobs because they're required to by law. But you'll never get that job even if you nail the interview and the resume. That job has already been given to someone else in the company. I'd LOVE to find a job where I can work for 20 years, but that's an impossibility. No one wants that kind of loyalty anymore. Heck, there's places I've been fired from because it's cheaper to hire overseas. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. Faster. Faster. Faster. You can't just do a job anymore, you need to do 5 jobs within your job in order to keep it. It's exhausting. I'm not sure where this guy is getting his shit from but even when I was in the military, there was a giant shift in 2003 where military jobs were merged and suddenly you needed to multitask 3 other jobs including your specialization. No one wants a master, they want a multi tool that they can work to the bone for 5 years for peanuts then discard. There is no "work hard and you can do it!" We get, "Work hard and you MAY get to keep your heat on this month". THAT is why this generation is depressed. We were brought up and fed giant spoonfuls of lies that worked for our parent's generation but do not work at all in today's world. We're now so deep into debt because that good old promise of "pay now, get it back later" for college turned out to not only be a lie, but has now made us unemployable.

At 27, my depression is mostly money related. To sum it up, I work to afford my meds, that allow me to work. I live with family cause I can't afford anything else. I can't take the risk of moving, cause if I can't get my meds I barley function. Have tried looking for places that offer insurance, but no luck. It feels meaningless trying most days. Also feels like I let everyone down, because I did not become an engineer like my grandfather. I have nothing to show for 12 years of work, other than chronic pain. Hard to believe there's people out there my age, who have started families and own homes.

I did speech about this in college, explaining how social media makes people depressed because of how people are constantly comparing themselves to others who live a 'perfect' life on social media. Ironically, the class took it as having a "negative mind-set on life" and that I was the one depressed.. It was baffling.

I think another reason us youths have more mental health issues is because we feel more stressed. Not necessarily because he have more stressful lives than our parents or grandparents, but because when they got it they were told to just deal with it and soldier through it and when we get it we're told we should get help for it, which leaves us even more stressed. Plus everything is easier now. Want some food? You can buy a whole meal for three bucks, throw it in the microwave and be eating inside five minutes. Need to find out how to do something? Google it, and in five seconds you'll have your answer. We have easier lives for the most part, so we get bored easier, which leads to more checking Facebook or whatever, which leads to stress and depression when we don't get our 'fix.'

Never seen a bad video never seen a plug that wasn't well thought out in it's timing placement and it's content. I don't know if phones and social media are the true cause of depression in millennials and Gen Z's - I've met plenty including myself who have gone through depression who don't use facebook,/Instagram/Twitter/etc. Regularly. And in my case, sure I use RU-vid a lot and play a lot of video games, but I'd argue that binging on these things is a result of the depression, not the cause. In analyzing my depression and my own life, it really seems to be more of a product of expectations than anything else. Back in the 50's -70's it was completely okay for someone to work in a factory, get married, have kids, retire, and pass on. That was considered a good and valuable life. Nowadays, we're instilled with the idea that we can and should change the world, and not doing so is a waste of our time here on Earth. By the school system, by our parents, by the media, and by our religious leaders and other mentors, time and time again we're told to maximize our talents, to take advantage of every opportunity, to get straight A's and get into the most prestigious college, and on and on and on. Unfortunately, depression tends to be the result of frustration from unmet expectations. So it's really no wonder so many of us are depressed. We're all expected to get good grades, to get a wonderful job, to make a difference in the world, to take advantage of every opportunity, to maximize our talents - how is any normal person supposed to do all of that? We're all depressed because we're all told at a young age that we can make a difference and be extremely successful, and when we inevitably see that we are not making a difference and are not extremely successful, we do not live up to our own expectations put in our minds from childhood, and feel as if even trying is pointless and we might as well just give up.

Millenials at least in America spent our entire lives being told this country is an amazing place where you can work hard and make your dreams come true, and then we graduated into the Great Recession. When we turn around and tell the generation that raised us "Hey this isn't the world you told us we lived in. This is horse shit, it needs to change" we are call self-entitled ingrates. Couple that with the "lucky ones" who enter college straight out of high school, watch the problems in our world from the outside from the comfort of their dorm room and proceed to blame straight white men for everything. I was born in 80, when i was about 3/4 years old I felt embarrassed because I'd always came in last and told my parents not come and watch me race. But this time it's going to be different I told myself, i didn't care about 1st, 2nd, 3rd or the middle just don't come last place and I'll be happy even it was 2nd to last. And the teachers were giving one sweet from a big tub to anyone comes in the top 3 in all the events. We lined up soon as the teacher said go i ran like i never ran before, to my amazement a teacher came upto me and said "well done, you came 3rd" and she gave me a sweet, that made me extremely happy and given me something to be proud of sense of achievement my only regret was i made my parents to stay at home when it was the only time i won something.

I think it could also be that there were also many depressed people before,they were just scared to admit it and seek help,but since mental health care is getting normalized there are more people who admit it

I am mostly depressed because of the exhausting school system and all the useless and uninteresting information. I don't feel alive, i don't want to socialize and just don't care anymore...

I'm a millennial but I don't use social media unless I have to, I generally hate taking selfies (unless it's with friends), and I tend to leave my phone at home unless I'm expecting a call or my ipod isn't charged. I graduated high school during the recession when job hunting was a freaking NIGHTMARE and was expected to compete with people way more qualified, experienced, and educated than I was. I fought tooth and nail for whatever odd job would help put me through school, don't tell me about how "privileged" and "lazy" millennials are, at least not all of us are like that. We basically got screwed over by past generations and have to deal with problems our parents never had (finding a job is still way harder than it was in the 80's/90's) so if millennials are depressed and out of work, maybe that's why. This was an interesting video overall, but I feel you relied too much on stereotypes and generalizations.

I think a big problem is how were told that we need a college/university degree to get a good job, but all we actually get in return is 30 years of debt and "we're looking for someone with more experience." The value of a college education anymore has gone down, but the cost for a college education has only gone up.

I also want to completely agree with something you said, and that was in reference to mobile phones. I did a thought experiment, where I would only check my phone 3 times a day, it was always on silent. For a week I would feel a tinge of anxiety, like wanting to take a hit of a cigarette, and want to look at it. Afterwards I can say I honestly felt more at peace.

We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. Sometimes I feel like one of very few people who actually think using your phone is rude as hell. I'm a millennial myself but being glued to the screen is in no way just our problem. I go to dinner with my parents and I sit there silently, patiently waiting for them to put their phones away so we can actually speak to each other but that only happens when the food arrives to distract them. I never use my phone when in someones company unless I actually need to. It's ignorant and rude and I feel like I sound like an old lady for saying that when I'm only 23 but it just seems like common sense to pay attention to the real life people in front of you.

It is not the phone but the persons on the other end. People give likes not because they actually are thinking about what you said but because of the fear that they might get rejected and not receive likes in return.

The 'living at home' thing's got more to do with houses being totally unaffordable, so it's cheaper to not move out until you can buy outright rather than renting forever.

I don't have a smartphone, I suffer from inferiority complex, my parents always told me that I needed to be better. Still depressed, thoughty2. I don't think it's something nearly as simple as "experts" are saying.

I think what makes us all more prone to depression might be the constant pressure to have a perfect life? Like a job is not only for money anymore, it has to be a passion and then there is the stress to always be the best, and the fear of missing out...with all this social media we can see what great things others do while we are sitting on the couch and instead of just enjoying a relaxing evening, we think we are wasting our time and missing out. I get that a lot, too, like I'm tired and just want to watch netflix but can't relax because I'm not making the most out of my life and I constantly think about if my job decision was wrong, just worries that you and your life is not good enough... I personally don't get that narcisist thing at all, I usually feel like everything I do is not good enough and I see that in a lot of other people, too...we are all worried to get a job at all and don't expect a promotion without doing anything, this was just weird to hear! oO

I gave a good 18 months to a particular job, trying to prove myself and ask for more learning opportunities. The work culture made itself clear; the manager had no interest in investing in me. They just wanted to exploit me. I’m not entitled and I’m not sorry for leaving that industry like so many others do their jobs. I now do what I love and am content with where I’m at in life and where I’m going. I’m grateful for wife and son and that I am able to run my own business. It’s gruelling in its own way, but I love the challenge and I love being fully responsible for my own work, rather than labouring under other people’s exploitation of me.
