What are your thoughts on Draymond Green's comments on the Pistons?
@HinzRafael
@HinzRafael 3 года назад
So much to unpack, not enough time and space (in the comments lol) suffice it to say, I'll be honest. I was a prisoner of the moment in Draymond's interview. He said alot, seemed unfair, and quite valid his comments. But having heard your respective perspectives i'm beginning to see the true validity of Marcellus's primary argument as well as Acho's subsequent points (contracts bind the players only). I agree with you both. I think these were not the best examples from Draymond because both Andre & Blake understand their place in the league, aging stars with heavy contracts, yet still more to give. And it's a mutual decision from both parties. I actually see it as a form of respect from the organisation to not only give the players/agents "advance" notice openly, but seems like they intend to deal them to better situations. I could be wrong, but perspective is everything..
@HinzRafael
@HinzRafael 3 года назад
On the contrary, what is also true is that organisations historically have not made the best decisions in HOW they exercise their power to terminate contracts, trade, etc.. i think this is where the "respect" argument is most relevant. Draymond referenced Boogie, Harrison Barnes.. now THAT was disrespectful.. (their public trade). Not the decision TO trade, but HOW the organisation exercised their right to. Tough business, yes. Happens to average people too.. NBA players just get theirs publicised

@VETERAN Your employees aren't as responsible for your success in most arenas as they are in sports. So I do somewhat disagree and understand where players are coming from. But players could always choose to be independent contractors or start their own leagues. They will quickly see there is a lack of benefits in doing either one of those things in the short term at least. And more than likely you will end up with players having the same complaints about lack of power in some capacity. Outside of sports these owners were already successful,but what could they be without these players.

I have to agree with Marcellus. Athletes always use the narrative that a sport is a business when it comes contract negotiations etc, However, that narrative is conveniently ignored when a team acts accordingly. Employer / Employee dynamics. Each role comes w/ a different set of responsibilities & priorities. An owner has a whole team/facility & construct to think about. A player does not. So while there is a fan perception of a double standard & i agree that to be the case (i.e. Anthony Davis Forces his way out of New Orleans = he's vilified by the fans, but a team moves on from a player & it's BAU) At the end of day compensation is the ultimate form of respect in any job. if you don't like dynamics. find a new profession & see how that works out for ya.

Wiley is missing a huge part of Draymond’s point. Draymond didn’t say owners don’t have the right to make moves to benefit the team. He was simply saying why do owners get a pass from the fans while players get punished (castrated) when they do the same thing. That’s the double standard. It has nothing to do with owner and employee status. It’s about being fair in your assessment of both parties. We all get that it’s a business.

MW is spot on WRT to the dynamics of owner/management and labor. Labor has little to no leverage in most negotiations, because there is usually thousands who would gladly take those jobs. However, when it comes to jobs where there is labor scarcity, then labor has much more leverage. What Green and others are pointing out is that folks like MW and fans are not used to labor using their leverage, when players act as individual entities, rather than as a collective, I.E. the team. We've all been conditioned to think that ownership makes trades or other personnel decisions for the betterment of the team. That may be true, sometimes it's not, like cost cutting to prioritize profits over winning as an example. But if MW and all of us are consistent in our thinking, in that owners, players, or any actor in the economy, will use their leverage to best negotiate what is their best interests, then Green is right, the fans and media have no right to be upset. Just because ownership has traditionally held much of the negotiating power, doesn't mean that pendulum can't swing a bit the other way. I think what is really at work here is twofold. Most people have employers. I think they put themselves in their situations with little or no leverage and think how dare he (the athlete). But dare they do, because they have far more leverage than you. Secondly, people have a problem with others acting individually, selfish when others do it, but how many folks in their owns lives have done things that benefits them individually, and not collectively? Everyone.

I think a simple way to resolve the trading and cutting of players would be a 2 part negotiation. Kinda like in European soccer. A owner of a team or CEO doesn’t get to treat his employees like cattle, no matter how much they pay...in a decent/civilized society. It is shameful to use such coercion...and is a type of passive aggressive violence.

Players tend to oversimplify things. Didn't Draymond call Durant to ask him to come to Golden State? Wouldn't that lead to trades and releases? Didn't Lebron - who agreed with Draymond - trade 3 or 4 Lakers players to get his buddy AD to the team?

Is there a double standard? I wouldn't say so after listening to Mr. Wiley and Mr. Acho. I mean idk what to say. Businesses are entities. People are people. I feel like if every player had a company where their "person" works for their own LLC or corporation. Then they would be in a partnership with this organization when they sign the company's name on the NBA contract. I think they are signing their own names. Example: i create a company/LLC in all 50 states called "Basketball players, LLC." I hire myself as an employee. Now, when I am at the negotiation table. I'm the person representing basketball players LLC, While so and so is representing the Los Angeles Lakers. 2 people representing theor respective entities. In that way, it's two owners (level playing field) as a table talking business. Then when you signed the contract you sign it as basketball players,. LLC. Its a partnership instead of someone "hiring" someone else. Something like that should happen to resolve this issue.

Nobody thinks of it like this, but players are actually partners with the owners, it's a limited partnership, but it's a partnership nevertheless & it's called the players association, therefore on that fact, players do need to negotiate better options/terms for requesting trades & how teams handle trading them when the team wants to

the playoffs are extra games (not accounted for unless added into incentives in a contract) for making it a bonus (not part of contract) just like the pro bowl... the owners own the franchises and I don't see what Green really meant by his comments bc players badmouth owners all the time...is that respect???

Man an owner of any business assumes all the risk when opening and maintaining a business. If you business does well it allows you to give your employees higher wages and better benefits.

@@therealestmc85 lol of course they do 20% of small business fall within the first year and 50% within the first five. The stats get worse the longer they open. The owner takes all the financial risk open and maintaining the business. Most Americans are employed by small businesses. With any business there is a risk of failure.
@cy4069
@cy4069 3 года назад
@@tony3879 First off, these sports teams aren't small businesses at all so that has nothing to do with it. Like they literally can't fail almost no matter what. Secondly, just because a business owner takes on the responsibility of the possibility of failure doesn't mean they deserve to treat their employees however they want. The reward of owning a business is the fact that you have ALL the control, you're basically a dictator of your franchise. Just because they might go under if they mismanage doesn't mean they don't have it much better off than their employees. The fact that they have enough capital to own a business in the first place means they are doing well for themselves..
@tony3879
@tony3879 3 года назад
@@cy4069 @Cyrus E. Farsad I was using small business as an example of risk of opening a business and being an owner. I should not have used that as an example and stuck to the topic. Second point how are the players being miss treated. They can't speak out about trades or get fined. If they don't like it have it included in the collective bargaining agreement. If they are going to be traded they sit them out because they are an asset and don't want them to get hurt. Not sure on how they are mistreated. Now the media is the one that has the issue with players demanding trades.

Are there not teams that fans and the media (because they're apart of the perception and reaction too) love to chastise for never getting it right. Do people not talk harshly and deride James Dolan and the Knicks? Were the Browns not laughing stock as well 2 years ago for NEVER getting it right( having several 1st rd picks at QB and repeatedly failing. )Did people not blame that on the organization? Weren't people and the media also ultra critical of the Pelicans for "wasting" AD prime and not securing him any help and also having a slew of players get injured while playing for them? Teams do face criticism. Where fans are concerned they tend to criticize whatever they think will make their team worse moving forward. And the James Harden case is a pretty bad example because the Rockets have routinely answered to James demands. Besides the GS Warriors,who has shown more consiency in the West than the Rockets in the last 5- 6 years?
