@gregorylagrange 3 года назад
@@austinwarren2286 It would help if players had some input and media members had less. But you'd never get away from personal biases because some former players can be just as envious as media members can be due to how much players used to get paid versus now. Or just from a standpoint of a different social atmosphere where a player is going to exert more control over his life and career today than they would before. And also players aren't that dedicated to keeping up with players who are outside of their own playing era as people think they are. It's normal for once a player retires, they hardly watch the sport they play. But one thing that could make it better that is currently changing is more athletes are finding their way into media after they retire. Because if you want to get right down to it, the two sides of the equation have been mostly white men who wished they could play deciding on the future of mostly black men who can play. And the "know your place" dynamic still applied. And what was used to keep somebody like Terrell Owens out many times gets flipped to describe another player who looked like the media members as, "he's quite a character".

Calvin Johnson came in when the offensive numbers were drastically inflated and the lions were garbage most of that time (useless stats in garbage time). Reggie Wayne and Torry Holt had to share the field with other all time greats like Marvin Harrison and Isaac Bruce and both of those guys have super bowl rings as major contributing players to those super bowls.
@k-ri2023
@k-ri2023 3 года назад
Reggie Wayne and CJ basically played in the same time period of inflating numbers and Holts Rams were a head of their time with the passing game and was throwing at an insane rate. Also, having a great on the other side of the ball helps not hurts. This isn't basketball where another player is taking away shots from you but opening the door so you face less bracketed coverage and become a more attractive open for a QB to throw too. Neither guy would've been better than CJ on the Lions but CJ would've been better in their situation because one if you single coverage CJ you're asking for trouble in ways neither guy can give you. Those guys are great but still lucky to have the support that allowed them to see single coverage and play free with functional QBs. As far as winning and loses none of these wideouts are responsible for the entire infrastructure of a roster. CJ went out in NOLA and dropped 200 yards and the defense collapsed in a playoff game and last I checked this ain't high school there was never a time he could play FS or DE.

The problem with the Hall is there a fixed maximum number of new people added to the Hall while the number of potential inductees are backlogged from the many prior years of many former great players. Also, changes to the game changes how we view greatness. Many of the older decision makers are going to want to get their heroes and contemporaries in, especially those who may be near their end days. These issues add subjectivity where by some are looking for reasons to NOT yet allow more recent players in.

In my opinion they should use a metric system (adding some ratios numbers which shows quality instead of only straight numbers which shows quantity) counting for 80% for the objectivity, and the 20% remaining should be by vote for a slice of subjectivity. I think an important takeaway here is numbers don't tell the whole story. Wes Welker is a 4x all-pro and 5x pro-bowler with nearly 10,000 career receiving yards who definitely shouldn't get in despite his numbers being on par with many hall of famers. That's just the way it goes. Production doesn't always equal impact, especially in football.

Man Gronk has been the most impactful non QB on the field this past decade...that's why he's first ballot...in the biggest moment everyone knows where Toms going with the ball and more times than not Gronk shows up...he routinely goes one on one against the top lineman in the league... his story is insane...look at the hits from Earl Thomas and Ward that he had to overcome along with back surgeries and so many more...

@@printezstroman I'd say when healthy he was.... he's so versatile they line him up in so many spots...he was never protected from the defences full attn with any bigtime outside receiver...so for a long period he would be blocking on one play and be the only deep threat the Pats had...I mean there are lots of guys that can wreck games like JJ Watt in the first half of the decade or Aaron Donald in the second half...not to mention top tier corners that can shut a whole side down...but I think Gronks versatility is unmatched.. He has more regular season TDs than Calvin Johnson and he played a couple of fewer games...that's with all the injuries

Torry Holt should be in the HOF. Greatest Show On Turf was with 4 important players. 1. Marshall Faulk 2. Kurt Warner 3. Issac Bruce 4. Torry Holt Sharing passes between Faulk and Bruce, and to get his numbers with that team just shows that he is deserving of the HOF. Comparatively speaking, we have 3 of those players in the Hall. When you look at the numbers with all 4 playing together, the stats don't lie.

I never thought I would agree with T.O, but he has some valid points. Go back and look at the WR's and look at how long it took before they finally went in: We all thought they were shoo-ins to get in on the first ballot: Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Art Monk, Cris Carter, Marvin Harrison, Michael Irvin etc. WR's are the toughest position to get into the H of F on the first ballot. There's a reason why that only a few get in on the first ballot. Look at the WR's still on the ballot: Reggie Wayne, Torry Holt, and Hines Ward are still on the ballot. Look at the WR's coming up for the H of F for 2022: Andre Johnson, Steve Smith Sr, Anquan Boldin. Three respectable names. Ask yourself which one would get in on the first ballot?. Between Holt, Wayne, and Ward who would get in if you were to choose. For me, T.O. should have gotten in on the first ballot or even the second ballot (2017). Eventually Larry Fitzgerald will retire. He should be an absolute shoo-in first ballot, but this is NFL voting system, don't be shocked if Fitz doesn't go on the first ballot.

The HOF process is outdated. The current HOF members should vote for the new inductee, not sports writers. Sport writers never played the game, so they shouldn't be judges for the HOF. Plus, some of the sport writer hold grudges against players and try and keep them out. This is one of the reasons Terrell Owens wasn't first ballot.
