Because of the work you have done , the rpm at idle will always rise to a new level in older cars . This is a good sign. Now adjust the carb to bring it down to regulation level.

You have already saved the car from rotting in a barn, you have rebuilt the engine. I think it would be a shame for the car to be sold as it is. I know you have other projects on the go at the moment, but I think you should do a full restoration, I know it will be expensive but it is a classic worth saving! You don't need to do it all in a short period of time it can be done as and when funds and time are available. Great content as usual George 👍

No idea --- only you know its true condition, you briefly showed the state of the panels and rust ...not shiown with enough light or in depth, or extent so we are blind ..so cant advice because of that.- and THAT IS THE MAIN THING, George with this car , A couple of brake pipes front to back can be done for £20, if you have the right tools - recomend sykes or ratcliffe flaring tool..can be picked up for under £50 if not complete --just make sure it has dies and punches - for 3/16ths which is common to most cars of this era and is also known as 4.75mm hopefully that's what the car has. Think the carb problem is its .choke ..may have a heated bimetaliic coil that unwinds ..heated by coolent and sometimes they have a little eklecric heater element assisting the system.

Cracking video as always mate! Love the honesty about the challenges you're facing with the brakes. It's a tough call, but if you're strapped for time a full restoration might not be the best idea. Maybe focus on getting it roadworthy and reliable for now, then you can always tinker with a full restoration later on down the line. In the meantime, enjoying some blasts in a classic BMW with a few rough edges sounds pretty epic to me! Good luck with whatever you decide to do next.

You’ve come this far with the car I personally think while you’re doing the one line you may as well do them all. Being 45 years old, it’s a no brainier really. You’ll feel better about doing them knowing that when you’re driving it round that it will stop when you ask it to.

The Solex 4A1 is a horrible thing - most were replaced by a Weber twin choke conversion in the eighties. The 4A1 is too big for the 2.0 really as it was meant for 2.5 litre upwards engines like the 525, 528, 730 and cars like the 280 Merc, 6 cylinder Volvos etc. These have two idle circuits, one for each pair of chokes with all those drillings, vac pipes plus two idle solenoids. Detailed info is hard to find now but there's a book that has all the original BMW service info for these carbs, called '5/6 Series restoration tips'. I got one from Amazon and it's pretty good. There should be a vacuum pipe going from the manifold to the stub on the air cleaner where the crankcase breather pipe fits if memory serves. It's been a long time. If it's not there you'll have an air leak. Bare minimum restoration - get it running and driving, touch in the scabby bits and move it on. A 520 just won't repay a serious resto. I'd replace all the brake steel pipes and all the flexy hoses which will be knackered and trying to heal up inside causing the brakes to stick on.

Those cars were mechanically excelent for the time when they were put on the market. But they were, what we say in Norway 'rust shacks'. As most of the cars from that area was. I think it will cost you a good lump of money to get it through MOT. But it is not impossible. The thing is, the brake lines will probably go down the drain if you shall fix the rust.

Once you've got the mechanics sorted (at least no modern electronic nonsense) and you've eliminated structural rust, if any, I reckon go for an MOT and just drive it! Full patina on show, give it a coat of clear and enjoy it!

Luckily these old cars have relatively few parts attached to the body, so my suggestion is when all "technical" parts are working quite well, try then to find someone in the whole Europe that "recover" the body by welding and exchanging all rusty panels and frames. Then paint it and cover every part with proper rust protection. See it as a long time project, but try to make it perfect. Create a plan for almost every detail. Sometimes you can find a similar car and get some pieces quite cheap and sell the parts you don't need. In my home village in Finland, my father put a BMW/EMW 328, my 1949(?) in a barn about 1955. The car stood there till 1973-76 (i guess!). Then it was "sold" to a man and then I think it caught on fire, but shouldn't have been that severe, as the car today is restored. A 75 years old car. Original colour was light green, but now it's black. I think the car has an inline 6 cylinder 2.0 litre engine. Two doors, with the spare wheel on the back. This car has a much bigger grille than the famous BMW i4! 😆😆😆 This car was made in the BMW shop that remained behind the iron curtain after WW II. Maybe 1951 they had to rebadge the car to EMW. This car has the blue-white BMW badge.

I’d throw out the idea of doing a partial restoration. Put in used parts from a salvaged car (if they’re still out there) but do it to a budget. At 1500, it’s worth trying to do it on the cheap. I wouldn’t strip it down to rebuild as, what do you have in the end? Unless it’s rare, it’s another old sedan. Hate to say it. Thanks! 😊

Hi George and good day. I'm new here and it's this BMW is the reason, I'm sure you're aware there's a lot of people like me whom love seeing a car like yours restored so for me I'd love it if you just carried on working away and filming your progress on here. This car has so faithful to her owners over the years, most probably had people making out in her, bringing new born babies back from the hospital, taking families on holidays and experienced families laughing and crying, she has a story to tell. She came to you for a reason and I think its because she needs to be loved back right now. After all the saying goes life isn't about the destination but the journey and id love to see you both on this journey.... Together . I hope my thoughts help. Have a good day 😊

Excellent, George! This is exactly what I'm anticipating will happen as we attempt to revive our family's 1980 E12 518. I'll tackle that when the war chest gives at least some semblance for success towards a roadworthy solution. You have the M.O.T. in the UK to tackle, in Germany (where our family car is located) there are stringent requirements to re-certify a piece of cultural history (TUeV Par. 25 Vollabnahme). Since you want to drive it, you prob have to take Sreten's (yt e539 restorations) approach and do the full job, and, yes, you risk putting out more than the car will ever be worth (I'm willing to go that route myself, what speaks for our situation is that the 518 has been in our family since 1981, purchased as BMW-employee used

Nice touches under the bonnet. Running rich, the choke valve inside might be seized to rich hence why it’s running like that, but need a CO machine for better mixture adjustment. The brakes pipes, that’s cheap to do and not surprised the main pipe is leaking. Slowly, you’ll get there. Mind you, your engine, despite rich, runs very well unlike mine 😅

Before you do spend any more money & time on this car I would assess & evaluate the rust situation. It is not mechanical failure that sends cars to the scrapyard, it is rust. Rust occurs on the outside AND the inside & much of it is inaccessible & therefore untreatable. To me this car looks too far gone & you would be better off cutting your losses, scrap it & buy something else in better condition unless you are prepared to spend an absolute fortune on it. You have seen it up close & personal so you will have a better idea than any of us BUT I would advise you to think with your head & not with your heart.

No tax no mot no ulez, keep that in mind. Motoring is only going to get more costly as they try to force people of the roads into there 15min cities. Geo fencing in cars is already here, they just haven't switched it on yet. Going to take a few yrs but it's coming. IMO always good practice to put water in first then anti freeze, water is a bit cheaper, if you a low down leak it just drains the water out.
