Part 1 here: • Wood That It Were So S...
Every once in a while a project arrives that upon first glance appears straight forward and simple but as more time is spent understanding the nuances of the work involved, well, things get interesting.
And such is the case with the painting featured in this video series. What appears fairly simple is anything but and requires inventive thinking, novel materials and even new equipment to facilitate a successful conservation.
Follow along in this five part series as the painting moves through the various stages and treatments of conservation and restoration.

Then he calls on other trusted conservators to consult about the best option to conserve the painting structurally. Julian’s process is so carefully and thoroughly considered. Talk about a guy who loves to learn and then actually apply his learning to such make such a cool invention!

I'm a design engineer, and even so, I managed to break couple of boards while installing an Ikea bed frame. It's not you, it's lack of experience or, in my case, overconfidence and not paying enough attention. Lack of install notes could be an issue as well. Anyways, next time take your time and read the whole thing and just create a plan and run it in your head step by step a couple of times, paying attention on the outcome and the could-go-wrong aspects of each step as well. Cheers!

@ninamason9001
@ninamason9001 4 года назад
In all fairness to Julian, sometimes that's all you can do. Think about what happens when your five-year-old gives your three-year-old a haircut. You'd much rather the kid have her ringlets back, but at this point you just say a prayer of thanks that only hair was removed (as opposed to, you know, skin, or an eye), and you start trimming to match the length. That's basically the same position he's in now.
@Calamity_Jack
@Calamity_Jack 4 года назад
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too! Removing wood to make it flat is what one (or more) conservators did in the past. Instead, it seems like a better idea to add an archival-quality self-leveling compound that would build up, not remove, material. It would conform to the existing shape on the bottom against the back of the painting (which is the shape, according to Julian, where the wood "wants" to be now), yet be level on the top (reverse of the painting), and you can modify that material as much as you want without touching/weakening the old wood structure. That would stabilize the painting's structure without removing any more of the original material.
