The Makers Mob 99¢ Summer Sale: rlnk.cc/fhthemakersmobsummersale
About two and a half years ago, I got a big chunk of cherry wood from a viewer who had recently cut down a cherry tree in his yard. I brought this big piece of cherry home and cut it into various pieces with the chainsaw with a few projects in mind. One of the pieces I turned into a live edge bowl. Now that this piece from two and a half years ago has dried, I can finish it and bring it to its final form. I don't do many live edged turnings so this was a little bit of a challenge for me. But it worked out in the end and I think it turned out very nice.

God DAMN I love these videos. I'm 24 years old, studied engineering in college and am now trying to switch over into neuropsychology, but I really wish I could be a woodworker sometimes. Amazing as always Frank! Thank you for letting me live vicariously through you.

I've watched most of your videos over the years. I think this piece is my favorite one yet. It really ended up as a showcase of the material more than the form. Very well done.

I love the fluid color and texture of the natural wood. Probably doesn't make since but the natural beauty of the wood that comes out after the work is done.

The "Carol Burnett Mop Lady Alter Ego" of yours is a fun touch. Could've used another rotation or two of the payoff shot. That was a great figured piece of wood and wanted to watch it a bit more. Thank you Frank!

i think a lot of people don’t realize that the actual bowl turning is the easy part. most anyone could go out, buy a bowl blank, and turn a nice finished bowl in an afternoon. the truly impressive thing about this channel is the way frank sources, processes, organizes and documents his lumber and blanks over the course of years. it seems like every project he takes on uses stock that he has processed down from the tree himself. from bowl blanks to the basement remodel.

Frank, I’ve flown helicopters in combat but would never try to shave the inside of that burl with that jagged very irregular edge! You’ve got a pair of Steelies Frank! That is one Beautiful bowl you made! Excellent craftsmanship! BTW, Don’t listen to that Hawaiian tourist helper you’ve got, he’s had too much sun and a surf board hit him in the head.

Hello Frank! In the beginning of the video I was kind of wishing that you would "complete" the bowl with resin, but when I saw the end result I realized that it was perfect just the way it was. Maybe you can find another similar piece of wood and fill in the missing parts with resin? I guess it will require som kind of mold to get a good result. Anyways, thanks for a great video! It's very relaxing watching you create nice things out of wood :) Kind Regards, Joel

Frank: Big fan and love your work but as a bowl turner would offer a suggestion on how to turn a bowl without having holes in the bottom. Clean off a spot on what will become the inside and either mount a face plate or use a worm screw to mount to the head stock. Turn the outside of the bowl first and leave a tenon or recess for your 4 jaw chuck. Reverse the bowl and hollow out the inside which will erase the screw holes. Once you've finished the inside you can then remove the tenon and have a finished bowl with out holes.

Oh yeah, I get to be the first to comment. I have admired your work and talent ever since I started watching this subscription. I have been turning for almost 30 years and have never done a live edge. I have done mostly spindle work and some bowls but not like what you do. Thank you again for your inspiration. I wish you could come to the Idaho Artistry in Wood when this whole pandemic thing is over. Thanks much and best wishes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
