I think it would be fair to give Emden high concealment rating, close to destroyer, to honor her raider role and compensate her other poor stats.

I was born in a little coastal town in southern india which used to be part of the erstwhile Madras province in the british India. To this day there is a word in my native tongue malayalam 'Emunden' used to describe a giant and terrifying thing. This word'd etymology traces back to the SMS Emden that absolutely terrorized the madras coast. Apparently the fear of the ship was so much that suddenly rumors would break out that the 'Emunden' was sighted and entire populations would run away in panic. Truly an impressive ship. -Source my late grand mother,who lived through both the world wars. However the Emden was merchant raider,not a light cruiser. Potatoes,potatoes.
@robertcbarry
@robertcbarry 4 года назад
Pardon but as a German I must correct that definition. Emden was a Dresden-Class Light Cruiser so thus a true and proper commissioned vessel of His Imperial German Majesties Navy as opposed to a converted merchant cruiser

@Michael Srite He is from the Kerala just like me. Most of the state of Kerala was a client state of the British Empire and not part of British India. He is from a traditional Christian community of Kerala. Traditional Christians of Kerala are socially advanced class who served under native kings in high ranking government services and in the merchant fleet for many centuries. Before Portuguese discovered a sea route to West coast of India around the Cape of Good Hope there was a thriving Jewish and Christian community in Kerala. Portuguese forcibly converted many of us into Catholic faith but traditional Christians of Kerala are Syrian Christians ( Oriental Orthodoxy)

@Michael Srite Most of the south indians speak and write English well. As he said the word "Emden" in Tamil language means a terrifying personality.
@abishekmanuelraj3843
@abishekmanuelraj3843 4 года назад
@Michael Srite It's not about the caste here, it's about the literacy of the south Indian people and the major thing you need to know is all the indian people are not shitting in the streets, there are a lot of things a foreigner can't understand about india. Don't go on with some common outsider beliefs. Just try to read something about india you will find amazing information about the indians. Well South india is the southern part of india. South indians states have high literacy rate and low shitting in street rates. They runs the major part of indian economy. Here we study two languages, English and mother tongue. That's why most of the educated south indians can speak good English.

The SMS Emden should be flying the Imperial German Navy's white ensign not the Krieg Marine's red war flag.

I feel like instead of Adding a German Aircraft Carrier line, WarGaming should have a Tech Tree Line split Dedicated to the Kaisermarine. (The Seydlitz, the Derfflinger, the Vön Der Tann, the Prinzreget Luitpold, etc.) And add a feature like with that they did with the Pan-European, and the Pan-Asian Destroyers where you have a choice to either have the Krigsmaine battle ensign, or the Black, White, and Red Kasiermarine battle ensign (Like have the Choices with the Nassau, the Kaiser, the König, the Bayern, the Dresden, the Kolberg, the Karlsruhe, the V-25, the G-101, and the G-170.)

I forget the title, but there's a full book about the Emden that I used to own a copy of. One of the things I remember from it is some of the lyrics of a song written by the crew: "Schiff ohne Hafen, Schiff ohne Ruh, Fliegende, fliegende, Emden, du Kannst ja nicht sterben Du jagdt daher, Ewig dein schatten Über das Meer..." Which translates roughly into "Ship without harbor, ship without rest, Flying, flying' Emden, you cannot die so therefore you hunt, Ever your shadow Across the sea..."

One thing we seem to have forgotten today is just how hard it is to find one small ship in the oceans of the world. Without satellites, aircraft or radar available, one ship is nearly impossible to find, especially as many merchant ships of the day did not even have a radio to yell for help. The captain and crew of the Emden fulfilled their role perfectly and must be saluted for their courage and honor is keeping loss of life to a minimum. I do object to them being called pirates. They were sailors doing their duty, while a pirate is a cowardly murdering thief out for nothing but themselves. Pirates of the Caribbean movies make them look like the good guys, which they were not. One point counted against the design of SMS Emden. The German Navy's insistence on arming their light cruisers with 4.1 inch guns as opposed to the British who went to the heavier 6 inch weapons. In every encounter the British heaver broadside served them better and led to victory over Imperial German Ships.

I did get the Emden the first time, when it was a mission or whatever prize with a port slot at the NA server. I thought: A fancy Dresden with a free port slot, well let's do that and after I play the damn thing I'll just sell the ship when I need the slot. I never sold it and I probably won't sell it. It's a good ship for a warm up round, drinking you coffee or tea, greasing your club with the fat from the "special" baby seals. Those glue and snot eaters just make for a good covering. Also, I did fancy HER history after I saw the iChasegaming review and look around for more details. I'm just not sure about the colors she's flying in the game.

Even better the Captain of the Landing party was against Nazis and war in general after his experiences in the Emden and in WW1. He did get into a lot of trouble with the Nazis, because he was so outspoken against them. Ironically only his title as a war hero protected him somewhat. He still managed to land himself 2 times in a KZ, only his status as war hero protected him somewhat.

It is interesting to note that the replacement HMAS Sydney also battled against a German raider in WWII, the Kormoran, but this battle did not end so well. The Kormoran was an auxilliary cruiser, disguised as a merchantman and due to multiple factors, the Sydney approached too close and was raked by the Kormorans' guns and torpedoes at point blank range. Set on fire and holed, the Sydney returned fire, but was forced to break off the engagement and later sank with the loss of all hands. The Kormoran was also set ablaze by return fire from the Sydney and was abandoned by its crew before exploding and sinking.
@jcorbett9620
@jcorbett9620 8 лет назад
It would seem that the captain of the Sydney closed right in, unsure that the ship he was approaching was hostile. The Kormoran had the advantage, as the captain knew he was going to ambush the cruiser and had his crew ready to open fire. Caught by surprise, the Sydney suffered serious damage before she was able to respond. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_between_HMAS_Sydney_and_German_auxiliary_cruiser_Kormoran

While the in game Emden does not have quite the firepower of her sister the Dresden she is more than a credit to her namesake. It's all about the ROF. Chikumas don't scare the Emden. Captain Jingles, may I inform you of the magnificent and epic story of the "Seeadler"? It was a German sailing boat which was tarned as a Norwegian trade ship when WW1 began. When they escaped from the English blockade of Germany they set out to terrorize trade routes in the Atlantic with their secret weaponry..... and boy they were successful. Their Captain, Graf Luckner, was a Gentlemen at its purest. He even kept English and French books on his ship for his war prisoners... even played game with them.... To read the whole story of this captain, his crew and the ship check out a german book called "Die Windjammer" published by Time Life Bücher. I hope you are interested... If yes contact me in private chat and i will send you a copy of it

Great video! I was completely unfamiliar with real history of the Emden. I will admit, like you, the stats kind of turned me off to it. Since I won the ship playing missions I decided to give it a shot. It's a fantastic little boat and I enjoy sailing it.

When I finally figured out what all of those ship name prefixes meant it all started to make sense. USS = United States Ship, so far so easy. HMS = His/Her Majesties Ship, depending on the regent at the time. SMS = Seine Majestät Schiff...basically it's just a straight translation of HMS because back then Germany was still a monarchy

Got it, love it! I like to call these low tier ships "bumpercars" because it describes the way you play them.

As "Donnie Montoya" so rightly says in the comments she is a ship with a rich history! Great to see her back in WoWships and well driven by the Mighty Jingles😀

I still enjoy the story of the Emden and have loved thisship since my Dad got me a book on ships that featured a fold out elevation andplan in the prewar color scheme that is featured in the game. I was a little disappointed that Wargaming didn't let her have her fixed torpedoes. Ithink the Eden may have been the only ship to successfully use submergedtorpedo tubes to hit an enemy when she sank the Russian protected cruiser Zhemchug in Penang.

Von Muller had some kind of honour and I'm loving this story of him and the Emden

I was born and have lived all my life in Madras, a city in Southern India, and have heard about the Emden from my great grandfather. It shot at and reduced to rubble the top story of the Madras High Court and terrorised the fishing villages near Fort St. George, where the important British officers and their families used to reside. Like another person in the comments says, the Emden is still regarded as a powerful and evil entity to be feared. I apologise for my poor English.

About 30-40 years ago I read quite a few books about German warships of WW1 and WW2. Not sure where I read it, It was either a book about the SMS Emden or a book about the WW2 auxiliary cruiser Kormoran. But because it was really strange I still remember it. One of the first ships (if not the first) SMS Emden captured was named Kormoran. During WW2 the auxiliary cruiser Kormoran, which had nothing to do with the prize in WW1 would sink the 2nd cruiser named HMAS Sydney. Funny that you missed that in your Story telling Mr. Jingles ;)

I was born in Penang. There's a Russian memorial on the Esplanade, right on shore where the Zhemchug sank. They had a centenary of the Battle of Penang a while back with a Russian Navy contingent visiting the graves of those who perished. It's kind of a forgotten story here, to be honest. Most people have a greater interest in WW2, mostly due to there still being living memory of that conflict. I do believe there're still pieces of the Mosquet on display in the Penang museum as well. And the old Eastern & Oriental Hotel where the unfortunate Commander Cherkassov watched his ship go up in flames is still there, refurbished and once again serving as a hotel.

Jingles you should look up the fate of the second HMAS Sydney, the Leander class light cruiser. Quite a conspiracy-theory ridden end, and as an Australian I can say its a rather embarrassing yet tragic event as well. Considering we only had 6 cruisers in WW2 it was an enormous loss for our navy too.

Night Train123 yep, they pretty much knew where it was, but it was only discovered in 2008. I grew up in Geraldton which is where the main memorial is. During the first sounding of the Last Post (google it if you don't know) at the memorial sight a huge flock of seagulls flew overhead, so they built a dome made of 645 steel seagulls over the memorial for each of the sailors lost

I take it you've watched the The Great War special on the Emden? Here's hoping we see the SMS Möve in the game one day. Emden really has an epic story behind it. Makes you wonder where the Emdens torpedoes went...
