Worth the Wait ~ A Wade Morse Bluegrass Jam

TREMENDOUS VETERAN BLUEGRASS PICKERS, AMAZING ACOUSTICS (720p-HD).
Also see Part 2. • Worth the Wait (Pt. 2)...
If the Creator wanted to offer a little bluegrass redemption, I think He might consider Wade and Laverne Morse's big barn (I fondly call it "Nickajack.") and songs like these sung by this ensemble of wonderful pickers.
It was a chilly night in early February near Sanford, Florida. The tall RV structure, filled with Cracker Barrel-like momentos and a wide assortment of tools and devices was heated by a sole propane jet blaster that emitted a constant background whoosh but felt mighty good within its red glow. I hated to ask Wade to turn it off for video recording, but he and the guests understood and bundled up for the long evening. We broke periodically from recording to re-heat and eat from the great smorgasbord prepared by our gracious hosts, Lavergne and Wade.
This is the toughest editing challenge I have ever faced, bar none. I started with roughly sixty outstanding songs, all worthy of keeping, but not a workable length for RU-vid..
Even though this is a jam, and the tunes were performed spontaneously, I don't know what it is about these pickers that come here from all over, but many know each other and have jammed together for a long time. Others have played professionally. They just know how to listen and play well. I agonized over the raw video and worked the list from sixty or so down to something under twenty. A lot of great songs were sacrificed, and the video is still ample, but I hope you like it. It's the best of the best.
The following musicians come from East Tennessee, North Georgia, and Central Florida including Orlando, Christmas, Winter Garden, and the Lake County, Eustis area:
PERSONNEL (alphabetical order)
Bill Barnard -- lead guitar, vocals
Gerald Clements -- fiddle, vocal
Derek Deakins -- fiddle
Steve Houston -- mandolin, vocals
Bill Miller -- upright 1937 Kay bass
Patrick Moran -- resonator guitar (dobro), vocals
Colton McCormick - banjo
Stephanie Murphy -- guitar, vocal
Bill Norman -- guitar
Bill Phillips -- guitar, vocals
James Rogers -- principal banjo, vocals
Randall Screws -- guitar, banjo
Randy Screws -- guitar, vocals
TECHNICAL NOTES
I wanted to offer you this video as a single program rather than broken into parts for which you would need to search, because I wanted it to have a sense of unity from beginning to end. Feel free to pause and resume.if necessary.
You may notice edits or dissolves near the end of some extended tunes. The video camera only records in 5-minute segments and stops. If a song continues for more than 5 minutes recording must be manually restarted, and the two clips must be attached as seemlessly as possible, not an easy task.

I run a jam during the Summer months , and I try to get my pickers to back off just a little , while the featured picker does his lead .Too often , everyone plays their loudest at all times . All you have then is noise . These are some of the best pickers I have seen , and heard .

Very kind of you to make such a comment, Ted. This particular Jam is composed mostly of experienced pickers, but I can see how that dominance could be a natural tendency. Listening while playing is a real art.

Vivatones, you've done it again! Surely nothing can surpass this one! My toes tingled from start to finish - and are still doing so third time round. First class playing and singing further enhanced by the barn's acoustics - and your recording prowess, what more could one ask? As for James,well I reckon he could even breathe a bit of life into our UK national anthem! Please please, can you do a "Worth The Wait 2" with the material you left out? I'm sure that the omitted material will make another fantastic one - and I can see I'm not the only one who feels this. If you have to cut and hack some pieces I'm certain everyone will accept it in order to hear more of these guys. Just what we needed in such a depressing winter. Many thanks for an absolute gem guys!

Hope you have time to post a part B with some of the other songs. Anyone know the name of tune starting ~ 55:30 ?

@vivatones66 10 лет назад
I'll see if I can find out the name of the song for you. I love the fiddle line in it by Derek. And, I'll see what I can do about some of the remaining songs. Good post, thanks!
@vivatones66
@vivatones66 10 лет назад
With pleasure I thank my dear friend, Patrick Moran (dobro) who identified the beautiful melody at 55:30. It is "THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE." Composer: Ernest Seitz; Originally recorded 12-21-1921 in Camden, NJ on Victor number 18844 and sung by tenor vocalist John Steel; Lyricist - Gene Lockhart. The original recording duration was 2 min. 51 sec. and was released as popular music. Over the years the song has been performed in many genres by numerous artists.
@vivatones66
@vivatones66 10 лет назад
It gets even more interesting. My friend, Bill Barnard (guitar) further enlightened me with this pearl of wisdom. Eddie Shelton recorded it on his Expedition LP in 1976 and the album credits Mike Auldridge with writing the tune. The song does bear some resemblance. I did some further checking and found an LP recorded in 1976 at Jack's Shack in Nashville, and released in 1977, entitled "MIKE AULDRIDGE." The tracks include "Spanish Grass" composed by Mike Auldridge. If you listen to the samples of both songs on RU-vid and the Library of Congress "Jukebox," you'll need to judge for yourself the true origin of the song at 55:30. I plead ignorance.

But I would love nothing more than to see this live and have the honor of meeting you, Sir! I will definitely let you know when I'm fixin to come down! :) Thank you for your quick response on the song title. I knew I'd heard it countless times before, but must've been having a senior moment on the title. That second banjo player is being dissed, stomped on, stepped over leaving him in a situation to "STEAL" a verse or chorus line. Just take it around a circle and be fare with "space" to play. This reeks of a "Good Ole Boy" cliche that don't like young "Whipper Snappers".
