This was 1965, part of the British Invasion with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, etc., WAY before Woodstock. They played at Woodstock but they had progressed a lot in their music.

1969...Woodstock...I was 19, married, pregnant...the line about "I hope I die before I get old"...I am now 72 and not ready to get old! That was MY generation!

This came out in ‘65 guys!!!! Wayyyyyy ahead of their time. It was downright punk!

I live in the UK and was from that generation and I'm now 80 years old, but I feel it has kept me young at heart, and as I listen to these songs I am still there remebering it so well, the music the freedom we had it all it was just awesome in those days. I do feel there will never be a time like it again in this coming modern digital age.

This song is the studio version. The first hit off their debut in 1965! This is a fan video. This is the song they destroyed their instruments at the end of at the Monterey Pop Festival before Hendrix played and ended with his guitar on fire. There is a The Who documentary called The Kids Are Alright and is a must see.

This was 1965 pre-hippy era. In the UK the Mods and Rockers would fight in seaside towns - that's what you are watching - it was a very changing cultural time but no free love yet in England.

Back in the day music was king. There were no video games, cell phones and television programming was limited. The concerts back then often featured many bands all on one bill at about 6 or 7 dollars per ticket. There were many, many free outdoor concerts with all kinds of lesser known or local bands. It was truly a generation of sex, drugs and rock and roll and youth rose up against institutions and parents. Great iconic bands were coming out from everywhere and the choice of sounds and music were endless. It's great to watch the two of you discover this glorious time in music history but you've only begun to scratch the surface. Thank you for your openness to explore and discover the pure magical genius that is truly a time period in music that should never be lost.

Released in 1965. One of their early one’s. I’m sure it was shocking to a lot of establishment folks back then. Ahead of it’s time, but relatable to every new generation of young peeps.

The Who recorded this in 1965, way before Woodstock. The UK "mod" movement took the Who to heart, and the red/white/blue roundal was one of their symbols, as was riding scooters. The mods and rockers were rival groups, and there were legendary fights - notably at seaside resorts. This youth rebellion was at odds with the stricter upbringing of earlier times. Maybe the Who's sound struck a chord with these youths. Billy Joel did record We Didn't Start the Fire. Billy Idol was a member of the band Generation X before he went solo.

The 60’s & early 70’s were tumultuous times & it was reflected in a lot of the music.

My Generation was on The Who’s first album issues In 1965. There are live versions from the Monterey Pop Festival that is a rough recording but iconic for what they did to their instruments. The other live version is off the Live At Leeds album. It is an extended version and quite stunning. Live At Leeds is considered by many to be one of the best live albums ever

In case nobody has yet mentioned it in the comments - 1) Pete Townshend actually wrote the lyrics to be stuttered intentionally. 2) There's a great clip of them performing the song (live, no lip-sync) several years after it was a hit, on the network TV show The Smothers Brothers (which pushed a lot of boundaries) and they literally wreaked havoc at the end of the song.

When I saw The Who back in the 60"s while playing their finale song My Generation they literally tore up their equipment on stage. Drums flying everywhere. Nobody had every seen anything like that before!

The Civil Rights Act was updated in 1957, 1964,1965, and 1968. Most important generation for individual civil rights. Thats why the video shows British police arresting young people for literally doing nothing.

Greatest live rock band ever

John Entwhistle was one of/if not the best rock bassist of all time. He played bass as a lead instrument..

This was up there with The Beatles in the British Invasion, my childhood and early teens. Then of course all the years since!!!

As noted, this was one of The Who's early breaktrough singles (along with "I Can't Explain" and "Substitute"). By 1969, they'd not only started putting out more-sophisticated singles (such as the exquisite "I Can See for Miles"), but were working towards long-form pieces, the "rock opera" series of songs. Their first major success here would come later in 1969, with "Tommy". ("Pinball Wizard" is one of the most famous bits from that.) Pete Townsend's next Great Idea, "Lifehouse", collapsed in the planning stages in 1971, but some of the pieces ("Baba O'Riley", "Won't Get Fooled Again") succeed on their own. My favorite piece is the central song, "Pure and Easy", which was left off the ensuing album. More powerful singles ("Join Together", "Naked Eye") followed. (The expanded "Naked Eye", live in concert, is a true great.). In 1973, Pete put out the next "opera", "Quadrophrenia", with bangers like "5:15" and "Love, Reign O'er Me". After that, mostly just albums. Keith Moon (drums) dies of a drug OD in 1978; John Entwistle (bass) follows in 2002. Pete and Roger "retired" the Who in 2016, but still do occasional shows. One reviewer rated the Who as one of the four Top Bands of All Time (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Kinks). You could argue, but you'd be wrong, lol.

My Generation is from The Who's first album, The Who Sings My Generation, released in November 1965.The song reached 74 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chat in 1966. The Who, along with the Beatles & the Rolling Stones, are considered the "Big Three" of the mid-1960's British Invasion of American popular music.

In my opinion The WHO’s NEXT album done around 1970 is the greatest rock and roll album of all time. Behind Blue Eyes,Won’t Get Fooled Again, Baba O’reolly, My Wife,Going Mobile,And This Song Is Over are all on that legendary album.

The slight stammer from the lead singer, Roger Daltrey, was intentional. He was mimicking the way some Mods (fans of the band and part of a larger movement at the time) spoke when they took pills. Got them into some controversy, but it was worth it. Released in 1965, it reached #2 in England. One of the first things I learned to play on the guitar, too! Thanks for this!

This was before Woodstock. A totally different generation. This was the era of the Mods and the Rockers. If it’s available over there try and watch the movie Quadrophenia to get a real sense of what it was like. Billy Joel did sing We Didn't Start the Fire. My Generation is pretty much an iconic song for the British Invasion, on the same level as Rolling Stones ' Satisfaction. The Who's classic era were from the mid 60s into the mid 70s. This would be the lineup that has Keith Moon, who was such a madman on the drums, and away from the stage.

I was 19 when Woodstock happened. I got stuck on the Massachusetts Turnpike. The big political news was Vietnam. The music of this time was breaking the 3 minute limit of AM radio. It began the advent of FM rock stations, where the length of the song didn't matter. I lead to the death of AM radio as a music platform.

My Generation came out in 1965. I had to listen to it 4 times before I fell in love with it....

This was the generation that refused to dress, think, walk, talk, act, sing, marry and get jobs like their parents by whom and for WW2 was fought . . I was part of that generation, and you must remember that our parents were the WWll generation, and lived very different lives. I had albums from the Everly Brothers, Gene Pitney, and other artists from the late 50's, and early 60's. I remember well watching the Beatles that Sunday night on Ed Sullivan. The music progressed rapidly during that time and content of a lot of music focused on the Vietnam war. Many British groups were invited to Woodstock, but all declined except the Who. Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues and many others were invited, but weren't into the "hippie" style lifestyle, because that was mainly an American thing. The Who were not sympathetic with any nonsense from the crowd at Woodstock. Woodstock was originally set up to accommodate 50,000 guests, and instead had close to 500,000. I remember when no one over 30 was to be trusted. The true hippies originated in San Francisco on Haight Ashbury Street in 1967, the summer of love. These were the original hippies, and as far as I am concerned they were the only hippies. All others were people who copied, or mimicked that lifestyle. Haight Ashbury was a good thing for a short period before too many people came in brought bad habits. Hippie is still a generic term used by many for anyone who is different, or doesn't like labels, or to fit nicely into societies boxes. I have always followed my own path and what makes me happy. As long as others are not harmed by my actions, or lifestyle. Peace ✌.

When the Who started out, they had a kind "Mod" vibe....and artsy and minimalist. A lot of Rock musicians came out of the Art School scene in England. So they combined the music with a visual artistic expression.

You should of watched the version from the Smothers Brothers show, Pete Townsend smashed his guitar, Kieth Moon wanted to one up him and he blew up his drums on stage. Do you two ever just sit back and marvel over how much fabulous music there was in this era? Mid 50's to tge mid 90's (granted a long time period) was the greatest era of music in the history of mankind. Especially mid 60's through the 70's (80's was great too just because it was such a fun decade). You could do this for years and not cover it all. I'm enjoying watching you try to see it all!

Back in the late 90’s saw The Who in concert doing there rock opera Quadrophenia which including Billy Idol performing with them.

As mentioned this was already an old song by the time they performed it at Woodstock. The Who didn't like Woodstock. Pete Townsend once said the lyrics were partly inspired by frustration at 'imperious landlords' and having his car towed away by the Queen Mother - he drove in an old hearse at the time and one time he parked it too close to one of the Queen Mother's residences and it was towed away - 'Townshend explains, “Out of nowhere, I received a call from a man who wanted to buy the Packard. It emerged it had been impounded at the request of the Queen Mother. She had to pass it every day and complained that it reminded her of her late husband’s funeral.” Regardless of the sombre motive behind the request, it is still quite a bombastic notion to simply have the poor, struggling rock star’s trusted vehicle towed away at your behest on a whim of unfortunate circumstance. A miffed, Townshend continues, “The bill to recover the car was over £200, an absurdly large sum of money, but the buyer offered to pay the fee in return for ownership. I agreed.” The money raised from the sale helped the band to pursue a musical path and by 1965 they were changing the face of music with their debut album. When all was said and done, we have the Queen Mother’s solipsistic ways to thanks for one of the greatest songs of the era. As Townshend concludes, “I resentfully dedicated ‘My Generation’ to the Queen Mother.” - Far Out More recently Roger Daltrey being interviewed on Brian Johnson's TV show said - "they think its about age but its about attitude".

Growing up in the 70s, every album collection had The Who - Live at Leeds. Check out that 12-minute rendition of My Generation plus Young Man's Blues at ear-bleeding volume! The live version of Magic Bus is pretty awesome too. If you love GREAT bass, The Real Me on their album Quadrophenia may be the best bass track in rock history. I miss John Entwistle big time.

Song was 1965. Townshend 19 when he wrote it. The Who a few years younger that Beatles and Stones born at end or just after WW2 instead of during the war. Leaving school age 16 in 1961-62. The first generation of groups that listened to first Beatles as fans and inspired by Beatles to form a band. They had energy and money but grew up with parent generation in collective PTSD after the greatest OTT adventure excitement they could ever have imagined. Bomb sites, grieving for lost loved ones, just wanting a quiet life but having achieved so much in having survived and won a war of good guys and bad guys, rationing in UK continued through much of their lives and UK was bankrupt and depressing. Youngsters couldn't do anything to impress them

This song was recorded and released in 1965.....I was 2 years old! It may not seem like it, but one of the coolest things that happened, IMO, was during Live Aid in 1985 when the who played this song from Wembley Stadium in London, when they came to the part where Roger Daltry sings "Why don't you all just fade away", they lost the audio/video feed to the US....it was so rock and roll! It came back shortly after)

My Generation was released in 1965 and were a part of the "British Invasion". This song was the anthem for Mods who were the biggest influence on Carnaby Street fashion.

One of the greatest bands ever!

Early Who, one of the great rock bands. The stammering was a reference to "blues", the amphetamine of choice for kids going to dance halls in England. Their line up - Daltrey on vocals, Entwhistle on bass, Townshend on lead guitar (and he wrote their stuff) and Keith Moon on drums was one of the most talented of the time, up there with Zeppelin but coming from a very different place.

The Greatest Generation fought WWII and the Nazis. The Baby Boom generation took on the battles for social causes like civil rights, women’s equality, protecting the environment, rights of Native Americans, No Nukes, and many more. The time felt like we were on the brink of all kinds of positive changes.

The 60’s oh I remember it well.There was this energy building here in the uk.We were post war babies,our parents had suffered the war, food had been rationed, it was all about work to rebuild the country. There were many mentally damaged people walking around and to me everything seemed grey and colourless. There was an overwhelming sadness and little joy. But then this upswell of young people demanding that it be different. That we should be happy was frowned upon by the previous generation,( mainly out of fear of change I believe) and of course,like today ,the media fed on the controversy. However this only added fuel to the movement and then at some point in the60’s( it’s difficult to say just when but around the time of Beatlemania); there was an explosion of colour,music,fashion ......culture.It was so exciting and uplifting. Over time we began to learn that some of it was good and some not so good. We became greedy and wanted more and more. Overtime we have come to realised there is a different battle going on. A battle which more recently has tried to divide us. I am feeling the same vibrations as I did pre 60’s. with the added sadness of the pandemic. Change again is in the air and I am hopeful. This is why I enjoy watching you guys. You are getting what was happening back then,and why it happened. We have learned a lot since then and have better tools for the future. I am hoping for the pendulum to swing back a little towards thoughtful music, colourful fashion, and kindness. This is what you are bringing to me. Thankyou

The Who "Eminence Front" is a great song of theirs from the 80s. I had such a crush on Roger Daltrey (the lead singer with blond hair and blue eyes). 😍 Wait, I think Pete Townsend sings lead vocals on the song Eminence Front. But either way, I had a crush on the blond guy who usually sang lead. 😂

It was tumultuous time. It was the time when folks were fighting for civil rights and peace, a stand against past traditions. ♥

To me, this song was a message from my generation response to my parents who after seeing the Beaules on TV saying things like " Do you call that music? And how can you hear what they are saying? As compared to my parents who were about the songs popular to their generation like during the wwII time of 1938 to 1945 . I listened to Farank Sinatra, Dean Martin on TV and I was 10 to 14, but the Beatles first songs were tame 1964, . I never said to them tour songs are so boring after hearing it for years, because at was raised to respect my elders, and I never wanted to hurt my parents feelings. But I dud have friends whose parents were open and trusting with their children and said, okay, let's have a listen, my parents were older than my contemporaries, almost like their grandparents age. My parents had gone through my 3 brothers with Elvis, but treated me different as I was a girl, and O had to listen to my brothers doing Elvis and I even sang the lyrics to Elvis, but they had no patience left for that . I let my son's listen to anything in my extremely large collection of over 600 albums and CDs, so they could hear my music, but I was still buying new records some of them ones my son's were listening to, I didn't stop adding and growing my tastes my styles, and my son told me his friends thought he was lucky as I was a Cool Mom, so he was pleased and I have been a singer in bands when I was 15 and did back up singing with Heart and others before I had kids. I was 27 and 37 when my boys were born as surprises 10 years apart as I was on the pill since I was 17, and it failed twice at 27 and 37 years old. I am always open to new things, as long as they harm No one. So I was always young at heart, and still am, I think. I coached my son's baseball team as I was a single Mom as his Dad chose to take no part in his son's life, until he was ready to go to a bar and have drinks with his dad. I never asked my son to do that, but I told him he could try a sip one from my glass once he was over 10 and just one sip. I was not a big drinker and had had my going out dancing out of my life so did not drink drive etc. Even now I have the odd drink only if it something that tastes good to me, and have one or two sipping on them all night. I have never been tipsy, as I like to always have my wits quickly working, and can be pretty deep thinker, so drank socially and stay right on top of things and chatted with my friends. I never let anyone ever to be drunk around my kids ever! I like to be a deep thinker, discussing life, politics, the world news etc. I hope my kids do same. My kids father had drinking problems and was a mean drunk, so not allowed to be around my kids then. I am the type who can have a drink or just tea, or a cold pop. take it or leave it.

This is more about the post war generation of Great Britain. When these musicians were growing up they were living in cities that were being rebuilt after the heavy bombing of WW2. There was still food rationing and heavy financial controls because of the heavy UK debt due to two world wars. All had lost multiple family members during the war and most were poor and intent on building a good life for themselves based on the sacrifices of the previous generations. Out of all that came great music direct from the soul and a great understanding at a young age of life and death that gives the lyrics so much depth and meaning.

If you ever get a chance - watch The Who perform this on The Smothers Brothers show in the late 60’s. Their drummer Keith Moon rigged his drum kit with explosives unbeknownst to his band mates and detonates them at the end of the song. He nearly blew up the whole stage. Pete Townsend still has hearing problems as a result! They were a great band but also very angry and volatile. They were known for breaking their guitars and equipment on stage. They’re one of those bands you have to watch live performances of to get a sense of who they are. I’ve always thought The Who is one of the best bands you have to see live. There is something about their visual aesthetic that is very pleasing. Townsend’s jumps and windmill arm swings Daltrey’s swinging of the microphone and the incomparable craziness of Keith Moon on drums … John Entwistle is the stoic one just standing there and playing some of the best rock n roll bass you’ll ever here! This band is legendary! Some others to react to: Won’t Get Fooled Again - Pinball Wizard - Who Are You - Love Reign O’er Me and many more. Also since you mentioned Woodstock you should look in to the rivalry between The Who and Jimmy Hendrix regarding their performances … Jimmy lighting his guitar on fire etc competing with the antics of The Who etc. Great reaction and I appreciate you taking the time to get a sense of the cultural and musical zeitgeist of that era. You guys should check out the song “Woodstock” written by Joni Mitchell. She wasn’t at Woodstock but was inspired to write the song by what she had been hearing about the festival. For a more rock version check the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young version.

The Who was to perform Dec. 3rd 1979 in Cincinnati, Oh. at Riverfront Coliseum. Because they had "festival seating" meaning a free-for-all seat arrangement. People rushed in to get up front and 11 people were trampled to death in all the confusion. Very sad!

Even though this was only released four years before woodstock, it’s actually light years away in terms of music or popular culture. This is peak British Invasion, Woodstock was peak hippy era

Most of the 60's I spent in the war in Vietnam. Once I came home and let my hair grow and started grooving' to the psychedelic music and smoking' those funny cigarettes WOW! The world, the times and the atmosphere were totally unique to us. I even became a frontman for a band for awhile. We will never see those times again. They were special.
