We have all wrestled that guy/gal who is super mobile and seems to have limbs of rubber and we have all wrestled that person who is just a brick sh** house and cannot get their hands over their head. There is no question that mobility is CRUCIAL to one’s success in the sport of wrestling, but what is the difference between wrestling specific mobility and traditional stretching?
I want you to think about someone having your leg elevated in a single. If your hamstring is too tight or you are unable to remain hopping on your back leg then you will get taken down and scored on. There is no traditional hamstring stretch out there that prepares you for both the mobility and agility demand that this requires to stay functional in these positions. That is the difference and the main reason you need to start incorporating these mobility drills into your training!
Keys To Success:
Identify the positions you need mobility or feel immobile
Position your body and learn how to contract and relax
Understand and train your active/passive insufficiency zones
