Fun fact: The Yakuza actually approve of the Yakuza games very enthusiastically. And also the Yakuza are legal in Japan, most of them have legitimate business offices that are publicly registered. The deal is that they CANNOT touch any civilians or harm any civilians no matter what, or the police will incarcerate them. Everything that happens gang-wise needs to stay between the gangs. Obviously if someone gets murdered police are going to be involved, but you get the point.

@@genericscottishchannel1603 most yakuza are completely inexperienced with guns because of Japan's strict laws and importing, (which makes firearms quite rare) the available guns are only given to high ranking individuals pretty much. Majority of fights (that are not gang related) will take place with swords and other melee weapons

Yeah, because it doesn't bode well for them if say, one of their important members have to be in prison. It's costly for them business - wise, plus they have to actually take care of said person's family financially if they have any.

Pretty sure the yakuza games were never trying to be Japanese GTA Hell Yakuza has always been more serious than GTA since they play the story almost entirely straight (there is some funny moments but usually the silly stuff is put in the side stuff) while GTA is filled with comedy in its story Also Yagami from Judgement is actually a lawyer but close enough

You're right, they weren't. The marketing teams for these games in the west tried to market them that way to boost sales, and didn't realize that would make people label the series as a GTA knockoff and actually hurt the sales instead. And unfortunately, the series still carries that stigma to this day.

The reason why the Chinese assassin is handsome is because they hired a famous Chinese actor named Sam Lee to voice him and use his likeness. And they reason why they put him on the cover is to help promote the game in China and also he is the final boss for majima and he is the second to final boss in the game.

Again a reminder Yakuza games are approved by yakuza. When they invited actually yakuza to play the first game they only had 2 complaints 1. Kiryuu's wardrobe which in their words would get him laughed at in any self respecting Yakuza and 2. The fighting because "we wouldn't use fist like children to sort this out when we can use guns and quickly solve the matter"

Well, it's not really Sega who invited them, it's a journalist who actually went around interviewing yakuza members and got quite acquainted with them. He invited 3 of the guys he knew and got them to play the original Yakuza 3. They really enjoyed the mini games and said something like "Sega US sucks" when they were told that the cabaret and gambling mini games got taken out of the English version.

Okay, I don't mean to come across as harsh or mean, but you are factually wrong about this series EVER trying to be Japanese Grand Theft Auto. That comparison only exists because the localization team f*cked up hard when they were marketing the early titles, and because people hear "Yakuza" and say "Oh, Japanese GTA". There are almost no similarities between the two series whatsoever, even in the early titles. If this game is guilty of copying or emulating any other series, it would probably be Shenmue. You're also wrong about Judgement to some extent. The MC is a disgraced lawyer turned Detective that's hunting a serial killer in a city that's largely controlled by the Yakuza. At least in the first game.

Yeah, we shouldn’t blame the audience or viewers for saying “Japanese GTA”; localization teams and American advertisers are usually to blame for that kind of thing, and I say that as an American. “Hey, you like crime games, don’t you?” “Well, I play Grand The--” “Great, then you’ll love this game from Japan. It's just like Grand Theft Auto. We swear. 🤞😈” Then American people play it and are like, “Hey, this isn’t like GTA!” Where exactly I was going with this, I don't remember. Sorry for the long-winded reply.

No Japanese Grand Theft Auto. They were always a beat em up series. All Yakuza games were wacky, even the original PS2 ones. But they've had their serious moments too. I liked the cabaret mini game, doing it flawlessly and earing and all that money, ranking up the girls super quick.

The yakuza series was never trying to be japanese grand theft auto! Why would you even say that?! It's supposed to be the spiritual successor to shenmue as it was created by the same guy and took a lot of its design philosophy from that series. You can see a lot of similarities between them. Also nagoshi does not like to promote senseless killing in video games. When characters are killed in the game its supposed to be a huge deal. (killing in self defense doesn't count)

Yakuza was not trying to be Japanese GTA, Yakuza is nothing like GTA Yakuza has always been more serious than GTA the story for Yakuza is always serious and heavy while the side content is goofy and hilarious, as for GTA they add their goofiness in the main story and Yagami wasn’t a disgraced police officer he was a disgraced lawyer, now he’s a detective, he still has a license to practice lawyering.

They just used an actual Chinese actor to promote the game. A lot of the models in the game are actual Japanese actors, the fact that you thought it was an insecurity just demonstrates your own problems. Your belly fat isn't something you can possibly hide, so don't even try to use that as justification for your racist stereotyping.
