In this video I identify the issue with the Vstar, or Star 650 cruiser and the known issue with ethanol that causes the engine to stutter and die directly off idle. Even if the Mikuni carbs are perfectly clean, it doesn't cause much sitting to produce this problem. We evaluate, and then remove the tank to prepare for the task. The fact is, there is little to be done to prevent this. I have tested these jets out of the bike, and with 10E gas, over time the specific jets in question will slowly continue to shrink and worsen. Experiments were done with up to 50/50 sea foam and gas mixtures but this is not really effective. Of course you can use something more reactive, say, Carb or brake cleaner, but that brings us to this video.
Now, i'm one of those folks who says, if the carb is dirty, you take it out, strip it, clean it, inspect it and reassemble it. The right way, no shortcuts!!! But I make a rare exception here. Too often Ive seen this particular setup where the carbs were superb! You could eat of of them, simply this single point of failure causing the issue time and again. As luck would have it, the bike is set up, if by design to mitigate this problem to an extent. Without having to tear up the whole bike. Just raising the tank a bit for room.
Truly, one should surmise that if after the first video and into the second removing the bowl covers reveals a horror show, then , well, this series may not be for you. This might require comprehensive work. Thats not what this series is about. It is the quickest way to resolve a known issue in the 650 carbs due to ethanol gas.
Also, a viewer points out that, I did not mention my penchant for hex screws. I get them at Ace hardware and often use them to replace the crappy pot metal Phillips screws you find in the Mikuni carbs. I do so at the first opportunity.

You are a life saver. My Dad got ahold of my bike when he was sick and I’ve been finding her pieces everywhere. He passed, I’m rebuilding her-and he didn’t get to teach me enough! I’m having trouble with her just getting turned over-I’ll be following a TON of these steps to see if I can make her come alive again. Thank you so much for these videos!!

Hey, thank you so much. My neighbor asked for my help on her Bike. It had been sitting for 2 years. Her Uncle had a mechanic go through the carbs before I got it. Same drama, would start and die. I went back in there and pulled the jets. small jet had some hard carbon stuff and big jet was goobered up. I soaked small jet overnite with pro grade carb cleaner. Next day, I used my wife's beading needles to ream out the jet. big jet, I just sprayed and the tube it rides on and let things sit overnite. put it all back together the next day, and BOOM, it fired right up and ran perfect! once again, thank you so much, She was so happy! You got it goin On Man!

Be careful cleaning out jets with metal implements. They are brass, easily deformed and you can change the gauge size. If so you will never figure out why it runs rich after that.

@@retrotechandelectronics Hi, I was careful. I am a recently retired ASE Auto Tech. I went from rebuilding carbs to fuel injection and on board computers. We live in the desert. I am used to hard carbon stuff. It gets real hot here and real cold. Her machine was stored at high altitude for a spell. In California, ethanol is limited to 10 percent. I told her to fire it up once a week. Repair came out great! Thank you once again and for the speedy reply. Got anymore vids of repairs?

Jeff is correct. There is nothing wrong with the Vstar650 or 1100 carb designs. The problem is E10 fuel breaks down in as little as a month and forms goop. If you are not riding enough to drain the tank down to reserve every month then goto Walmart and get a bottle of Seafoam, and put 4 ounces in your tank everytime you fill it up. If you know you are not going to ride the bike within a month or two, do the same and fill the tank all the way so the inside will not be exposed to air and rust. Tearing your carbs open is not necessary if it stumbles. If you have been running without Seafoam, just add 4 ounces to the full tank and ride the bike. Ride it hard when you can, like going up hills open the throttle fully. The Seafoam WILL clean goop from the jets within 100 miles of riding. My 650 has 45K miles on it. I have never touched the carbs. It runs perfectly on regular E10 fuel. The only time you should have to pull the carbs apart is if the bike has sat with un-stabilzed fuel for a year or more, and it will not start and run at all. As long as it runs, the Seafoam treatment will clear the goop out. And even then, before I would open the carbs I would force-fill the float bowls with pure Seafoam and let it sit over night. If it starts the next day, run it 100 miles with 4 ounces in the tank. And BTW, the 650 is jetted to run on regular octane fuel. It is very unusual to find E0 gas in regular grade. If you run this bike on anything higher than regular it will be running lean and hot.

I've rebuilt 100s of carbs because of ethanol in fuel. I'm fortunate to have a station close that sells non-ethanol fuel. I use it in everything that has a carb on it, especially if it is not going to be used for awhile. Never had a carb problem since.

I've got a question if you could help out, that'd be awesome! I'm a new owner to a 08 Vstar 650 as of fall last year and a new rider too. The bike was stored for winter with the battery on a tender and gas filled full with stabilizer before storage. This past week, the weather has been great so I decided to start it up but it was having some trouble. The bike started and was idle for a short time (~10 seconds) and died after. The bike now cranks but won't start. I've tried a few different days and the same problem. I've read some forums and watched a few youtube videos with people recommending changing the spark plugs and cleaning the Carburetor. Based off the little explanation I have here, what are your thoughts? Any feedback is appreciated!

You could take your bike to an upholstery shop and have a gel pad (available on line) or memory foam. It shouldn't be a big deal. More importantly though I recommend that you wear padded bicycling shorts under your pants. They are a great help on long rides. I was a motor officer for 15 years and have ridden twice as long, so I've discovered their benefits. You can purchase male or female bike pants and/or just the pads on line very cheaply ($10-15 max) via eBay and (possibly even better) Alibaba / AliExpress. Ride safe! 🏍

Hello....ok i opened the carbs, cleaned the pilot jet, main jet (throughly) but same problem. I opened the air filter intake and when i cover the air hole the bike jumps and works fine. it was sucking in too much air. i replaced the air filter and the problem still persists. when its idling it appears that the front cylinder is not working. but when i cover the air hole it works. Its taking in too much air.....and no fuel is going thru the front carb to the front cylinder. There is enough fuel going in the carb, i checked that (the air out of the exhaust for the front cylinder is not hot either when idling). Can you tell me what would be the problem......would really appreciate your feedback

I have a wierd problem with my bike. So I cleaned the carbs and the jets, put new o rings on. When I start my bike I have to pull the choke completely and let my bike warm up for like 10-15 min. If not my bike will turn off. My bike used to not do this and it would start up and be ready to go in like a min or 2 with the choke pulled. But now it's to the point it turns off unless I have it running for a long time. It turns off when I stop a stop light if I didnt let it warm up completely. I feel as if something is clogged in the jets but I have cleaned them and triple checked and they are fine. I dont know what's wrong. My bike runs fine everything is good on my bike. It just struggles to stay on if I dont let it warm up for soo long. I dont feel like this is normal because this had never happened before. Do I have to do a deeper clean or something? Am I missing something that I need to adjust or deep clean on my carburetor?
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 2 года назад
Yeah, sounds like you have an air leak at the manifold causing a lean condition. The choke is being used as an attempt to correct it. It is only used to identify it.

@@retrotechandelectronics yo think so, like my bike I have to let it warm up for a good 15-20 min if i dont want my bike to turn off at a stop light. It's at low rpm is when it turns off or idling. By the manifold you mean the plastic air intake that sits on top of the carburetor or do you mean where the air filter is? What's the manifold, sorry I'm dumb lol I'm still learning.
