Thanks a million I have a mechanic who is a go-for in the motorcycle mechanic industry doing what his boss tells him, good worker except the in-depth knowledge like you have. This has been really really helpful, great and clear video visuals I must say. Thank you again

Hey thanks for this video and the one on rebuilding the carbs. I build custom bikes but have yet to work in a vstar so it's nice to see a little tutorial to save myself time. I must say the fact you say every size of the nuts and bolts is extremely helpful thank you very much

Have you got any advice? I took off the carbs and cleaned them down to the last part. Because it finally wouldn't start. Put it back together and it still wouldn't start. Took it to Power Sports and they got it running by installing new plugs and battery-which I thought had been two years before that. Still now it starts very hard when it's cold-after a lot of cranking, and have to put the charger on jump start or the battery will go flat. I thought about new jets? I found a good web site and they advised to use Berrymans B12 gas additive and said it might take fifty miles for it to start working. I've done that but not much success so far. I know to never use the throttle but only the choke when starting.

I have a few questions first... I need to know some history on your bike...do you have original exhaust and the original air box set up? also did you work on this bike because it was sitting for awhile and running well before or the bike stop running all of a sudden for you.
@2liter8
@2liter8 4 года назад
@@DoityourselfMotorcyclerepairs Didn't stop all of a sudden. Slowly got harder to start. Not the original exhaust-don't know the name. Air box original. (air box?Big plastic thing under the seat. I dont' see how it could be otherwise because it's such a made for the bike factory looking thing.) When I bought it, it was starting hard. The guy carried a can of starting ether. He had taken it to the local Power Sports-told me they put in a new battery and plugs. He wanted to take it back as it still was hard starting. Once it's warmed up it starts right off. I rode it everyday that summer but it eventually got harder to start. I took off the carbs and cleaned them well-IMO. Back together still no start (because in part, of my lack of 'how to' on starting IMO) Took it back to Power Sports. THey did the same, new plugs, battery. So, no it was hard starting cold when I first got it but fine after warm up. Another old motor head and harley guy told me to check the points and timing. I have two manuals, owners and another big one. I took it out yesterday but took a lot of cranking to start. Had to use the bat charger. That's after sitting for 3 days. If I go out today it should start easier but still some cranking. Just when you're ready to give up-whoosh it takes off and runs well. A little cool here today in the low 70's so that's a factor for start up. Thx much for your help.

@@2liter8 okay first I want to say it's sometimes very difficult to fix motorcycle that you never even seen but I'm going to give you a few ideas that I have... based on your information... If changing the spark plugs helped that means the carburetor have either wrong jets needles or other stuff that was changed by the previous people and it's not correctly tuned. Also they could be flooding on you so when the bike is sitting the fuel is flooding the engine and then it makes it hard to start plus it will eventually damage the spark plugs....what I would do is take the carburetors out and inspect main jet and idle jet size and the needle. You can go to partzilla and search for carburetor parts and they will show you the sizes of the Jets there... Also the factory needle is not adjustable so if you check your needle and it's got grooves in it.... it's adjustable for the height and it could be in the wrong spot... The other thing you need to do is fill the carburetor up with gasoline outside of the bike and see if they are flooding... You can do that but running a hose from the gas tank directly to the carburetor and let it sit on the ground in the position that it sits in the motorcycle next to the bike and see if there is a fuel coming out of them... Let them sit at least 30 minutes... Actually do that first before you take them apart.... This would be where I start.... Let me know what happened. I hope this will help you and please subscribe to my channel it will help me out 😊

I have the same exact bike. It starts and idles fine. I can rev it up and you’d think it would be off to the races. Not hardly. Every time I try to put it into gear it completely dies. (No I’m not stalling it out). I checked the kickstand sensor with a multimeter tonight and when my battery shows 10 volts, I have 7 bolts at the sensor when I put it in first gear. Nothing in neutral. That’s not saying my switch itself isn’t bad though, I’m assuming it still might not be making proper connection when assembled? Is there another place to check for voltage to rule that part out as functional? What about a clutch sensor or neutral sensor? Could that be a problem? If so where are they located? Process of checking to see if that’s the problem? Are those one in the same part? I’d greatly appreciate any help at all. This is my grandfather’s old bike and I’m hoping to get it running so I can start my new job with forestry in the next few weeks. Thank you for your time.

its been three months... when you put it in gear does the bike lurch forward? the clutch on the 650 tends to hydrolock and stick, the oil between the plates forms a tight vacuum. If the bike has been sitting for years it might be really locked hard. If the bike lurches when you kick it into first that is whats happening. Let the engine warm up for minute with the choke part way on, sit on the bike and push it up to about 3 to 5 mph (down hill is better) then kick it into gear. If it keeps running the clutch is hydrolocked. Pull the lever in while you are riding and rev the throttle up and down - you might have to shift into 2nd to get more torque across the clutch. Once it breaks loose it will be fine and ride normally. If this is not the case (lurching) then you are on the right track with the neutral or clutch safety switches.

May I ask you sir, does the V-STAR 650 & DRAGSTAR 400 have the same carburetors? I mean I try to fix my dragstar 400 carburetor using this video...what do you think sir? Thank you
@DoityourselfMotorcyclerepairs
@DoityourselfMotorcyclerepairs 6 лет назад
I have never seen the Dragstar 400 in the US. I don't think they are available here. If the carburetors , air box design and gas tank design look the same from the outside I'll say you can use this video because the only difference in that case would be the size of the carburetor/jets, etc. The job would be the same otherwise

I don't have any Vstar650 at my shop in this time...but I will try to make video on that in the future. Look for videos on Yamaha Vstar 1100 and also Yamaha Virago's valve adjustment. It will be almost identical. Thanks for your interest and please subscribe to help me out...good luck with your valve job!

How often should I clean this?
@bigchungus2493
@bigchungus2493 4 года назад
Late but this isn't really maintenance this is to get the bike running when it isn't running right or at all, if you run good fuel and ride it often enough you shouldn't ever have to do this.

Please do not hold the camera so close to you work. You are so close we can usually only see your hands or fingers. So close makes it very hard to see the area where you are working.

This is an older video but there’s a line/ hose coming from in between the carbs, apparently going behind the air filter, I see yours looks cut?? I’m in the process of doing pod filters, so I guess I cut it. Do I cut it? And can someone tell me how to work on bikes? Why is my Vstar in pieces outside, what have I done.
