Hi Jeremy, thanks for the comparison video. I'm a Korg PA700 user and once in a while when I jam up with my friends I use Yamaha PSR 770 (owned by a friend of mine). I find Korg way ahead in terms of tone quality and functionality, I haven't played a Yamaha SX900 though. Let me ask you something, if you are given a choice to pick either the Korg PA or Yamaha SX, which one will you go for Jeremy?
@billsmith8339

I tried out both in person, and I bought the SX 900 even though it was about $500 more. To my ears, the Yamaha just sounds more authentic, especially drums and pianos. I play in bars and small gatherings, and my tips have gone up since I started using the SX900 a couple of weeks ago even though my act didn't change ...

Korg: A very inexperienced mix engineer, everything in your face type. Yamaha: The mix engineer carves out proper spaces for the lead instruments and it sounds much more pleasant.

After watching this just order Pa700 and received. For all who criticized Korg, just to know, if you know how to use effects on Korg Pa nothing can beat it. Trust me, Pa series is not for who just want press a button and play, it's very very deep and once you master it you won't come out from it.

I was an Electone player long time ago and love to play cinematic music. I prefer Yamaha because of the registration and sequencer which can fulfill my requirement for arranging and performing this kind of music. I'm a solo keyboard casual player at the moment and would change multiple voices frequently, that will be likely more than 10 combination of voices(3 layers of right hand and 1 left hand) while performing a song. Yamaha fit my requirement (8 registrations for 8 different of combination and the one touch buttons give me additional 4 x 8 which is 32 of different combination). Some how I can further extend to another 8 registrations , 32 one touch by switching to a new sequence without interruption. I'm using Yamaha PSR SX900, but it is still insufficient to me, I would prefer Genos or Yamaha Electone with more registration.

A person could drive himself crazy trying to find the absolute perfect arranger keyboard! There are pros and cons to everything in Life. There are important points to consider when making a decision. I read ALL of the comments below and my choice is Yamaha. The Korg has nice features but may be more complicated to learn and use. I feel that the SX900 is easier to learn and play, and for me that is really important. I am not an electronics geek. When I play I want, most of all, personal enjoyment and beautiful sounds. By the way, in my opinion the Yamaha PSR-SX700 has all of the important things for home playing, and is about $700 lower than the SX900. If I were to buy the best arranger on the market, I would choose the Yamaha Genos, but it is $5,999 at the discount online stores. Best wishes to all. I hope you find peace and happiness in your music. Jerry.

Hi Jeremy, I prefer the Yamaha sounds in this video... the Korg one's are richer/warmer sometimes, but some other times they sound a bit too "artificial". BTW, which keyboard do you suggest (one of these two or other within the same price range) for a former piano player who wants to play 70s songs, for ex. by Supertramp (-> wurli EP), Dire Straits, Asia, Toto, etc? which kb is better for these styles/sounds? Are the two in comparison both capable of importing new styles if the preset ones are not satisfactory? Thank you in advance :)

The Yamaha has a "wetter" sound with compression added and the sound of the Korg is "dryer." The Korg has settings to "wetten" the sounds. The Korg seems complicated looking far away but its actually not that hard to get the sound you want. I like the control the Korg gives you over the drums as you can pick from kits, individual drums and cymbals but the Yamaha only allows you to pick kits. You can tune each drum and cymbal in the PA1000. The PA1000 has hundreds of different drums and cymbals to pick from to build a kit. The Korg can show a guitar fret on the screen allowing you to place notes on the fret and also has strumming and pic techniques. The Yamaha sounds great out of the box. The PA 1000 can sound just as good with a slight bit of adjustment. I have been creating my own drum midi files in Superior Drummer 3 and importing as a starting point to build a style. These arrangers are a lot of fun to get creative with. I have only begun to scratch the surface on my PA1000.

Jeremy, thanks for the wonderful comparison. I really wish Yamaha brings out the PSR SX1000 soon (NAMM 2024 may be?) with all these great sounds adding more ethnic sounds, better touchscreen, weighing less than 8kg and new FSB keybed like the CK series that doesn’t make noise. I would have purchased the CK61 if that one had touchscreen, 1200+ tones and styles with dedicated variation buttons. I am a pro singer and a hobbyist keyboard player. I tried many arrangers and professional workstations at stores, at friends' places and in studios. Nothing can beat Yamaha's sounds out of the box.

I saw in one of your videos that you mentioned that you had to play simple left-hand triads for the accompaniment to use. Do arranger keyboards create accompaniment based solely on simple, major or minor triads or do they allow you to play more complicated chords as a basis for the accompaniment? I would like to hear bass lines and accompaniment derived from sus4, ninths, etc. Do any arranger keyboards do that?
@JeremySee
@JeremySee 4 года назад
sus4 & 9ths are basic and pretty much most arrangers can do it. It's the altered 13th#11 etc that trips the lower ranger.
@thomaspick4123
@thomaspick4123 4 года назад
I use a Casio CDP-235R. I do not think the rhythm accompaniment bass lines change drastically with complex chords. The complex chords do shine through nicely. And, you can play many chords as you please with 3 or 4 fingers, some chords I play with 5 fingers. However, one can play a major triad with 1 finger, a minor chord with 2 fingers, a major 7th with 2 fingers. A triad add 9 is recognized. Sus 2, sus 4, diminished, augmented, all recognized. Of the 200 rhythms, I have fun using different genres for the same song, depending how I feel. I find interesting rhythms to use by radically changing the tempo on some rhythms to create better accompaniments. This keyboard is straight forward for live changes on the fly for metronome, tempo, rhythm, tones, intro, variation, and ending. I recommend this Casio series. Only one made now, so others are available used for reasonable prices. These are sturdy keyboards that can take hard playing. The ones I know of Casio CDP- : 200R, 220, 230, 235, 240, and currently new Casio CDP- S350. The 11ths and 13ths are not recognized, or they play the corresponding 4th and 6th an octave lower.

I've owned many Korg keyboards such as pa600, 900, 1000, 3x, and 4x and today I had the opportunity to the new Yamaha PSR SX900 at a local store and I was really impressed. Its sounds are very realistic especially guitar, trumpet, accordion and sax. Furthermore, this Yamaha keyboard is so intuitive and I was able to play right away without having owned a Yamaha arranger. Korg on the other hand requires some time to learn even basic functions. It's not intuitive. Now if were to take all aspects into consideration Korg wins. Korg has so many advanced functions and it requires a lot of tweaks to come up with a perfect sound or style. Yamaha is ready to play. One thing I didn't like about Yamaha touch screen was it wasn't very tactile. I had to press hard and several times to keep it going. Nevertheless, a great product.

Great job. They both have good sounds. I like the Yamaha sounds a bit better. I agree with your PA700/SX900 video, because I don't get deep into tweaking, my old PSR-s710 is easier to use. That is why I have the SX900 on order. I use it live for sounds, not styles, with a band. I like the new extra outputs on the SX900 so I can theoretically send organ to my Neo Ventilator for real Leslie effect or to my Leslie. I don't think I can do that with the Korg. Leslie effect in both Yamaha and Korg are not good from and organist's perspective.

Very nice comparison. You do an excellent job on all of your videos and I enjoy them. Not a knock in any way on you but, is a comparison like this really valid for real world playing gigging, not creating sounds? One goes to a store and sees 50 HD TV's all lined up on the wall and picks the one that looks great. But once he gets it home, even the one that looked the worse would still look great. The same with keyboards. When out gigging, would the average person tell the difference between a "lowly PSR-E463" or expensive ones like these. Of course the professional and wannabe professionals could, or at least say they could, but would the average listener? I think that even a lowly PSR-E463 would sound great to the average listener in the hands of a really good professional player, like you.

@thomaspick4123 4 года назад
I agree, the average audience person can not tell the difference. Lower prices keyboards are good, plus if it gets stolen or damaged, it is somewhat replaceable compared to a top of the line expensive keyboard. The venue- if it is a dining place, the audience will listen to you for about 30 seconds, then ignore you and continue their discussion with their dinner date. You are there to provide background music and atmosphere. Be sure to play at a low volume. It is annoying trying to speak with a lady if the band is too loud. I like groups that play softly. We are to entertain the audience, not over power them. It is nice if a couple will dance, then they can come closer to the stage and hear you better. We want couples to enjoy their evening in a loving environment. I don’t want the guests to become deaf from ringing ears.

@johnhorazy12notes
@johnhorazy12notes 4 года назад
The difference is the player factor. More styles, more sounds for the player out of the box that are preset ready to go. That is Yamaha. The Korg has much much more involvement for the technical electronically geeks. From a musician stand point without a lot of head banging knob turning Yamaha is favored. Korg has more powerful speakers yet that is matched far above by using a keyboard amplifier with Yamaha. Who knows the difference? The player. Who doesn’t know the difference? The average music listener who is not technically musically inclined. Music is enjoyment and to be fun without a lot of stuff other than the music itself. Korg wins for more for the bang for the buck. From a player’s view with keeping in mind the average listener, Yamaha wins. If you are into spending time knob turning to get various sounds get a Korg. If you like just playing with more styles and sounds preset get Yamaha that the difference. Both are wonderful instruments with weighted time spent doing what you like most.

Difficult as both have merit, but on this demo the Yamaha produces both individual instrument and ensemble sounds that marginally are more realistic, more true to life. I think finally it comes down to factors like which set of styles appeal more to the individual, which keyboard is more 'playable' (easier to access the feautures as you play) - perhaps another individual choice, and, of course, price. Just watching, the Yamaha looked to be more imediately 'playable', but that might depend on previous familiarities with other models. From the video and no hands-on assessment, my preference was for the Yamaha.

what i can hear is that the yamaha has a better stereo spread and les of base,but this can be a result of the way the dsp and the connection is set up to filter out the bass a bit you could use an EQ,also,reverb can make a difference in sound,to recreate the same sound,these settings should be the same, wich is almost impossible to do without having the setting parameters,you can hear a brighter accousitc guitar on the yamaha,so,upping the higher frequency's with an EQ on the korg would pretty much give the same result,for strings i stick to my kontakt sampler in my daw,much better in re-creating strings than on hardware machines, check out this demo ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cuc99gh91OA.html

I think the DNC voices are comparable to the Mega voices, probably the Yamaha Mega voices are better. But the non Mega voices are not as good as the non DNC voices in the Pa1000. And most mega voices require skilled playing. Plus there are functions which I think I prefer on the Pa1000. Jeremy will you do a feature comparison? Or just let the Pa700 comparison video be the final word?

Mega voices are used for background track only , not for performance. It contains multiple instrument and voices in a different velocity. So that I don't need to allocate multiple channel for different voicing. e.g. velocity 0-19 for bass string, 20-39 for cello , 40-59 for viola , 60-79 for violin , 80 - 99 for staccato viola and so on.

ベンゲル の カナズミトム The Korg looks better. I like the tiltable screen to get the correct angle to view. My fixed screen is terrible, as the angle is wrong. I have to keep raising my body to view the screen. Korg layout looks good. Some voices good. Yamaha drives me nuts with all the continuously flashing lights. The rhythm programming was a little better than the Korg. The volume balance and choice of tones accompanying the rhythm on the Yamaha was smoother to listen to for my ears. Both keyboards look like 61 note organ keys, which I do not like. I prefer 88 piano type keys. I developed an aversion to Yamaha a few years ago that I can not shake= too high a prices. Korg turned me off some years ago with some 16 bit pcm rhythm machines and a lousily written instruction manual. Roland used to be good, but the owner died and their products are hard to understand. The Roland BK9 had keys of incorrect size (too small), and cheap plastic construction with knobs falling off. I stick to the lower end Casio stuff now due to the lower prices and it is sturdy stuff. True, the tones and rhythm programming could improve, needs more variations, intros, and ending. I do not like the Privia stuff- lousy screen, buttons sharp on my fingers to press. The Casio CDP-S350 is a decent compromise on many fronts.

The Korg has a much richer sound. The Yamaha sound tinny and canned. For the price point I find the Korg to be the better instrument. My first keyboard was a Yamaha PSR series and them I moved to the Casio WK-6600. I now own a Korg Pa4X and even though there is a major learning curve due to the complexity, I find it to me a much better instrument.

Yamaha sounds and styles are titled towards west music while Korg sounds towards east.... People prefer Korg in the east and will never buy Yamaha while people from west will never buy Korg......that's why Korg gives preference to it's customers in the east and design special Quarter tone keyboard for it's Arabian customers.... Plus Korg and people in india, indonesia, Afghanistan, Iran, Africa and Arab countries have developed a lot of sounds and styles for Korg arrangers ...which motivates people and they end up buying korg My personal thoughts about both of them are same.....it's only a matter of taste some one would like one sound from Yamaha and another from Korg....
