Bought one 10 years ago as I fancied a change from sportsbikes. She is still in my shed and is never going anywhere! Lovely old thing!

Nice to see the XJR getting some more love. After I got my license 4 years ago (age 45) I bought a 1300 SP from 2000 with 35000 miles on the clock. A friend of mine said it was a bad idea to buy a bike like this as my first bike (because of it's power), but during my search for my first motorcycle, I kept coming back to the XJR because of it's looks. When riding my first XJR I was planning to customize it and in my search for a good shop for that I stumbled on a customized XJR from 2012 with 4000 miles on it and bought that one. I haven't driven allot of different motorcycles, but enough to know that the XJR has everything I want.. except a sixth gear.. ;] You can cruise with it and when you feel like a little more oomph, it has that plenty for me. I don't know what my next mc is going to be, but it will be a second mc.. never going to get rid of my XJR.

I am lucky enough to have one in black 2006. So much torque. Only a 5 speed box so I have fitted a gear indicator to stop me looking for 6th all the time! Love it and these reviews. So refreshing to cover great bikes we all can buy at not so much money. 😀👍

Great review for an absolutely monumental bike. Had my 18,000 mile, 2002 for almost four years now and absolutely adore it. It's like riding a bull elephant. I've done everything from touring to back road Calimoto routes on grassy country lanes around Malton and North Yorkshire. Keep thinking about changing it for something lighter and more frugal on fuel but somehow I just can't bring myself to part with the big old girl...

Hi TMF, i absolutely love this motor, i have had 4 different FJ 11/ 12s and am currently refurbishing my old new 86 FJ12. Its a bike i keep going back to because of its all round capability and reliability, IMHO it is one of the finest motorcycles Yamaha has ever made

I've always liked the looks of these older bikes, the XJR, CB and Z lines in the "retro" style. I ride a 2005 VFR and there are two 2004 SV 650's in the garage, son and his partner's bikes, so I have a liking to the older (if you can call them that) bikes. Keep these videos coming as I'm really enjoying them. 👍

Truly one of the last great muscle bikes, almost a Jekill and Hyde motocycle. On the one hand a brutal, full capacity 'UJM', but also a calm and well behaved Gentleman's express ! typically suffering from the limiting effects of it's own weight and bulk, and under powered by the deliberate power limitations of the genre ! Low tech, and makes it's grunt from pure cubes, more torque than wizz, and best likened to a Labrador than a Pitbull.! Sadly with the march of emission control and political interventions, bikes like this have become obsolete, sadly the end of an era ! Great review buddy. Mine had a Turbo, wish you could have ridden that to see what potential they really have when you prod them.!

I used to have one, but now have a immaculate bog standard 2002 (Iconic paint job & white wheels) GSX1400CC. Love it. Its a keeper. Great comfy muscle bike. Yes. They are bulky and bounce and weave about when you are on it. But that's the joy of muscling it about. Pulls from nowhere. I like the simplicity of these bikes. No rider aids.

Great to see these old bikes reviewed again. I always wanted (but couldn't afford one), when they first came out in the late 90's/early 2000's. I owned a Honda CB1100RS a few years back, sadly one of the last of the four cylinder muscle bikes. Strangled to about 89bhp by emission laws and now discontinued, but still a great bike. Shame we won't see bikes like this anymore.

Nice review chap :-) I had a 2009 fuel injected one and a 1999 XJR1200; they are fantastic machines, I used mine as everyday machines, budget tourers and if you're brave enough they are surprisingly capable at a bit of "scratching". On balance I preferred the carb model which seems to run nicer provided the carbs are properly set up although the later ones had much superior suspension. Although the shocks are Ohlins the early ones were very budget, my 1200 was improved greatly by some Maxton shocks and aftermarket fork springs whereas the later one had "proper" Ohlins at the rear and a decent bit of adjustment at the front They are proper machines, an engine with a wheel on each end, you don't really need much more than that. For my money the prettiest of the last of the muscle bikes

Brings back memories of the different Suzuki 1200 bandits I owned. The fly screen and top box are for people using them in the real world and don’t have a choice of many bikes and a car. I have a fly screen and a top box on my Bullet 500 it does detract from the looks but makes carrying the shopping much easier.

Thanks again for this marvelous bike ride, MTF. I absolutely love these classic bikes and the FJR in particular. Truly a bike one could cross Europe with and never worry about breaking down due to some electronic bits not working. As for other bikes of the 90s and early 2000s, how about the Kawasaki Zephyr 1000 or The old Honda Africa Twin and maybe the now discontinued Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré? Maybe a Honda Transalp or a Yamaha TDM? There are so many golden bikes they don't make anymore.

Another bike i would like to hear your thoughts on is a CB1300S, if you can find one that is. I had one of these and absolutely loved it. I'm glad you reviewed the XJR. This is the only bike I have ever bought brand new way back in '97, then it was the XJR1200 and when it was introduced a year before I just fell in love with the looks and just had to have one, the earlier models had twin megaphone style exhausts and more aggressive styling. In black they looked awesome. I have to say though that initially I was a bit underwhelmed by the performance and it didn't live up to being the beast that the media lead me to believe it was. A year or so later I carried out a few simple and easy mods to it and boy what a difference, an extra 25% more power with a real kick in the pants at 6000rpm by which time it was doing seriously naughty speed and trying to rip my head off! It was never the best handling bike but it was a proper 'old school' bike which I loved, me being an old 1970's biker. I kept my XJR1200 for 19 years before I eventually part ex'd it for a Tiger 1050SE as I wanted to do more touring and no longer had room for more than one bike. I loved every moment of my XJR and in all the years I owned it it never gave me a spot of trouble. As for the the Tiger, well, let's just say I didn't keep it for very long. Thanks for another classic review! 👍

Great review, I love these bikes, especially the earlier models as they had great colour schemes. You can trace the engines history back as far as the fj1100 in the mid 1980's and I think even through to the old XS1100 before that.

@@TheMissendenFlyer you're welcome, your upload is standard Saturday breakfast viewing. I have just checked and the XS1100 goes back to 1978 with 2 valves per cylinder in the DOHC engine, growing to 4 valve per cylinder for the FJ100 onwards. I have heard of FJ engines doing well over 300,000 miles with regular servicing and wouldn't be surprised if there are 500k examples still running.

Really enjoyed the review on the XJR, it's good to see oldish classics such as this, it represents amazing value compared to tech laden new bikes, don't get me wrong I love my new bikes, but with so many gizmos and gadgets to keep ones eye on, to have a bike with no of these is simply less distracting. Great review Andy, what a fabulous engine this was. Yamaha certainly got their money out of it when you consider it started life in the FJ1100 in 1984, before gaining a few cc's in 86 to power their wonderful FJ1200 sport tourer. From the mid 90s it appeared in the XJR1200, before ending up here with your 1300 demo bike - over 30 years dependable service. Not bad for an old design. More of these please when you get a chance, ZXR1200, GSX1400 or CB1300 as an idea?👍👍👍

I owned one in 2000. Great bike for long hauls and really comfortable; my wife used to fall asleep on the back. Wasn't really right for me at the time as I was a typical sports bike rider, and the XJR didn't perform as I wished. However, I am looking for one again now I have aged and calmed down. I thing I would appreciate it more now, at the age of 67. Looking at the rear end bouncing in the video, I think there is very little rebound damping in the rear shocks.

Ahh what a bike!! I’d bought one to tide me over until my 1190 adventure arrived and I had the intention of modifying it a little, maybe cafe racing it a bit. The point you make about the narrow bars is spot on dude, I really struggled with it, found it unstable for my size (6,3). A quick swap out for some wider bars and bar end mirrors and it transformed the machine entirely, it dropped in on corners with massive difference after that. I missed a sixth gear too. Yet another great post dude, thank you, I’m now off to auto trader to see if I can get another now my fire has rekindled!!😂

This bike reminds me of the 1992 Suzuki GSX1100GM i used to own. It had a big bulky motor like this bike , air/oil cooled , but it had a shaft drive. Smooth and fast like this one.

Been looking forward to this since you mentioned it on the last Bike news! I have a particular soft spot for this Bike. I've had 8! From the standard one from 2000 (after the capacity hike from the 1200) to one of the last ones you mentioned and in varying states of tune. I loved them all and always got a bit of a tear when I sold one on. The last of the injection models as you said had some 'Styling changes' and a smaller plastic 14.5 ltr fuel tank which reduced the usable range from 200 miles to about 140 before you were on fumes! But it got noticeably lighter too also loosing the handy main stand. A wider set of Renthal bars improved the comfort somewhat. My last one was an 04 carb version (my preferred choice) with a few extra chrome bits, Scorpion cans, Dyno jetted to suit, rack, flyscreen & crash bungs. The usual stuff. Had to let it go when Redundant and bills to pay.... 😞 If I had the available funds I would have another at the drop of a hat and keep it! Loving the Classic Bike reviews, keep them coming!

Love these "standard" bikes as they are often called in the US. I don't believe this was available in the US. My last standard was a Honda 919F (aka Hornet) and I really enjoyed it. I enjoy many bikes to be honest but don't have room for more than the 2 I have. Nice review. Happy riding.

This review looks like it was filmed before the wafflevlog entry when you spoke about working on video quality. At times, this one looks a bit rougher. Yamaha, my favorite bike manufacturer! Some years ago, I considered the Yamaha XJR alongside a Suzuki Bandit 1200 as my next ride, but passed on both. I can't recall what I bought instead. The absence of cruise control was probably part of my calculation. Thumbs up for the big, frigging headlight and the reasonably full front fender on the XJR. I have rarely found top boxes to add anything to the aesthetics of a motorcycle. I have modified the attachment plates for my Shad topboxes to be quickly added or removed from my Bonneville depending on my intended ride. Although that particular windscreen doesn't appeal to me I would definitely have a screen of some type. Fighting the wind on a screenless motorcycle subtracts too much from my riding experience. Happy riding, Andy. See you later.

Had mine since new in 2000, tuned to 125bhp, Michelin Road 5’s improve the handling no end. Same engine as the FJ1100/1200 that was in production between 1984 and 1996. Had a tosser tell me recently that he sold his XJR13 because it didn’t have a fairing, he couldn’t sit at 120mph.

I have a 1983 CB 1100 F that Honda only sold one year in the US. I’ve had it for over 10 years and probably won’t sell it. I don’t ride it a lot, since I have a couple of newer bikes for daily riding, but when I do ride it, I’m reminded of how smooth and effortless these older in-line Japanese fours can be. I’ve had a 1250 Bandit, a ZRX 1200, and a couple of Kawasaki Concours 14’s, but the engine in the old air-cooled Honda seems smother than any of the water cooled bikes. They just got those old engines right.

Nice one Mr Flyer. This is one of those bikes that petrified me years ago, but being rather titchy and weedy I couldn't really try it. - it's funny to think my "little" triple r has over 15 bhp more. A lot of bike for the money is exactly what I was also thinking as you mentioned the asking price. I trust you didn't get "clamped" making this video?? Congratulations on the "Superbike Factory" sponsorship btw. Many thanks and I'll be sure to tune in next time. :>)

I bought one new in around 2000 and loved it, in fact loved it so much I bought a 2003 carb model a couple of years ago to act as a bit of a tourer for my wife and I. All day comfort 2 up for less than £4k, a bargain. Carb models are very easy to tune, with a dynojet ket, K&N filter, new carb rubbers and you get it to 120bhp without compromising it's smoothness and just gives you a bit of extra shove.

I bought one new in 2000 W reg £6k then , had it 6 years got 3k for P/ex , loved it , that engine has been around since the mid 80s ,started life in the XS1100 with a shaft drive I believe , then went on in the XJ 1200 sports tourer till the mid 90s , then they came out with the XJR 1200 and made it even better as the XJR 1300 , that motor is epic and very durable , there was an article in MCN years ago where someone had done over 200k miles on his XJR1300 with just regular maintenance and oil changes , you would get bored of it well before it dies as I did , fuel economy isn't the best either , I P/exed it for a Harley superglide , I was sad to see it go tbh .
