@bkjeong4302

Really makes me question why on earth SIX naval powers kept on building battleships in WWII EVEN AFTER THEY WERE SHOWN TO BE USELESS. WTF US/Japan/Britain/Italy/Germany/France?!
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 5 лет назад
syaondri Yes, but that’s not the dumb part, the dumb part is when Britain (and Japan, US, Germany, France, and Italy) kept with battleship projects even after said aircraft improvements. Hell they kept at it even after 1941, the point where aircraft carriers or land-based bombers had proven superior to battleships! They could have scrapped the ships under construction to free up the dock space and resources, or converted them into carriers, but (Shinano aside) they never did it.
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 5 лет назад
syaondri The very fact Japan knew the importance of carriers (and pioneered strike group doctrine) only makes the decision to build the Yamato-class even stupider. They knew it was a bad idea and did it anyways! Especially since the guy in charge of the whole fleet knew it was stupid. The same applies to the US: why waste resources on battleships if you already know carriers are better? The Iowa-class was actually NOT designed for carrier escort, but as the fast arm of a battleline to chase down enemy battleships with their speed and firepower: they were designed in 1939, before the US actually realized the value of carriers. It just turned out that as the Iowas were being built, their intended role became nonexistent, so they used them for other things, things that didn’t require a battleship (instead of being more sensible and just cancelling the ships). And using a battleship to do the job of an anti-air cruiser is extremely cost-inefficient. The US should have scrapped the Iowas and built an equal tonnage in CLAAs to get the job done more effectively (and cover a wider area, since no one ship can be in multiple places at once).

The Yamato was held back by Yamamoto at Midway, because he didn't want to lose anything else. It was not too far away. Had Yamamoto engaged it... Yamato's excellent surface speed could have put its 18 inch guns in range of American carriers whose planes were occupied on strikes. Same with Group Taffey in Leyte... Although they deserve credit for their Honey badger / David vs Goliath strategy. Yamato was outdated because it was underutilized, for fear of using it and losing it. One of history's great whoulda/coulda/shoudas!

The two fought the Battlecruiser Renown in 1940, took some damage and successfully ran away. 2 months later they sank the carrier HMS Glorious along with its escorting destroyers. Of course these two ships were fast enough to overtake their targets or evade. Then at the Battle of North Cape the Scharnhorst was engaged by the HMS Duke of York in a storm at too close a range to escape in time and was ultimately sunk.

It’s debatable if the Yamato-class is the greatest battleship; I’d consider the class the second-best battleships, with the Iowas coming out ahead due to their speed and still-impressive size. (You could add better targeting too, but even the most accurate battleship fire was quite inaccurate simply due to the conditions and distances involved, so that’s not THAT big of an advantage). Of course, even the Iowas were obsolete during WWII and really shouldn’t have been built, so....

I agree on everything but the accuracy. The Iowas were surprisingly accurate, so much so that in the 80s they decided their analog fire control was good enough to keep. Iowas could fire accurately at beyond-visual-range while performing high speed maneuvers. Of course that accuracy is only for landing shells in the area they want them to land and can only really be called accurate compared to other battleships. Yamato didn't have near the accuracy. No other ship did except the South Dakota (and North Carolina to a point). Iowas didn't have magic radar that told them precisely where to lob shells BVR, but damn if it wasn't so good in the 40s that even in the 80s they kept it.

Yep, Yamato's first time firing in anger was at little bitty escort carriers that they thought were fleet carriers, destroyers that they thought were cruisers, and wee little destroyer escorts that they thought were regular destroyers. And yet those tiny little ships held the Japanese fleet at bay, preventing a flanking, until the latter retreated. It was the only time carrier AA guns scored hits on enemy ships, pilots whose planes were out of ammo went on dry runs to try to scare the Japanese ships into turning, one bloke even leaned out of the window and emptied his sidearm.

Yamato was not like that - it was made like that because Japanese navy KNEW they can't take on the USA in the numbers game, so they had to make up in quality department. In Star Wars, Empire had everything needed to take on the Rebels in both quality and quantity and their naval composition and doctrine had different origin. Also, SW is a bit stupid on that part because they tend to have the biggest ships being destroyed in the same way as the smallest ones - for the sake of the story. Imperial Star Destroyers are being blown up and destroyed faster than even TIE fighters in most SW media, which is bullshit. But, they need it for the story, so it happens. Yamato is simply the result of "Shit, we can't build as much as they can - we need to make our smaller number throw a bigger punch if we are to stand a chance". Completely different doctrine from Tarkin.

Kurita was dumbass. He had a huge advantage against Taffy 3, and yet he failed to use what advantages he had effectively. He spent most of the battle thinking he was facing cruisers and fleet carriers, using armor piercing rounds against ships that could easily be annihilated with explosive rounds. Meanwhile, many Americans were panicking. A lot of them thought they would die, though they figured it would be best to go out in a blaze of glory. I read an interview with some veterans from that battle, and they painted a pretty clear picture of how bad it was. One poor guy was reduced to shooting at the enemy ships with his revolver, and another pilot ram completely out of gun ammo and bombs, so all he could do was fake out the Japanese by pretending to strafe them and dropping his fuel tanks to trick them into thinking he was dropping bombs. They were amazed they won.
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 2 года назад
The Battle off Samar was actually significantly less one-sided than often claimed to be, mostly because Taffy 1 and Taffy 2 were launching air attacks on Centre Force the whole time: the air attacks in general played the biggest role in the Americans winning, and the aircraft were often armed with stuff that could actually hurt enemy capital ships-the idea they only had ineffectual weapons to use isn’t true and ignores American primary records.

Shit son! You are about to find out about the good shit here! Before you read the rest, I suggest trying to hunt down a copy of it. Either the one from a few years ago, or the actual original show. So yeah, as to what it is. Space Battleship Yamato is an anime, and one of the great classic ones at that.. First show was made in the 70's and there has been a few remakes over the years (quality up in the air) since. The show gets the name from the fact that future humanity is forced to build a great weapon to save us from extinction due to a war with an alien race that has forced all remaining humans under the surface of dying and wasteland Earth as all other colonies or the like have been wiped out. Earth was fucked until we get a message from another civilization out there who are rivals of the ones attacking us with plans to build a machine that can travel to their homeworld and give us a means to fix Earth once more. Humans, because we are humans, work out that if you reverse the way the engine works then you turn the engine into a giant fuck you weapon that takes out the enemies. So we mount this engine/giant fuck you weapon onto the hull of a wrecked WWII ship that the aliens overlooked because no species out there would be stupid enough to care to do anything with a 200 year old trashed wreck of a ship designed to fight only on one type of surface (not under it, not over it, but ON it no less). Only some idiotic race would bother to think trash like that might be worth more than target practice at best. So humans, because humans fuck yeah, take that trashed wreck and mount a powerful God engine/fuckyou weapon onto it and shoot that bad boy into space where we wreck merry hell with the aliens. BONUS! A show that was connected with the original anime, but never actually shown too directly is Captain Harlock. Captain Harlock is if you let a space pirate be the type of space pimp that Lando WISHES he was. This show is also worth tracking down and is also the bomb. Thank me later for letting you find out about this stuff. :D

Also compared to a lot of 80's cartoons it was downright Shakespearean. Still made me laugh when Starcraft put Yamoto canons in game.

" Cultural significance of Yamato being sunk though was huge. - and many Japanese citizens felt that as long as Yamato's around Japan couldn't fall. " Is completely false statement. Imperial Navy managed to hide the existence of Yamato from citizens within and outside forces extremely well. U.S knew that Yamato was being built but didn't find out that Yamato class were the largest battleships ever made until after they won the war to see the documents. Yamato was never shown on fleet review, no pictures, no recordings to be shown to the citizens. This class of battleships were to be remain under secrecy. Not even their own crew knew everything about Yamato, Vice admiral Takeo Kurita states that he didn't know that Yamato had 18.1 inch gun as admiral Yamamoto refused to share exact specs (ref. 戦艦大和建造秘録 ). Yamato was never held to be the fleet celebrity like the Hood. The most popularized 'star' of the Imperial fleet were the Nagato class battleships. It was after the war, when the documents of Yamato was released and her existence known, that the people started to idolize Yamato as the star of Imperial navy.

what actually amazes is that during th ecourse of the war, even when there was a CAP protecting surface assets, the losses of the attacking aircrafts were always minimal, why is that despite all the AA fire and the defending aircrafts there is so little loss for the attacking air group.
@danielmocsny5066
@danielmocsny5066 3 года назад
Because the IJN lacked effective fire control systems to aim the guns, along with VT shells with proximity fuses. And because most of the AA guns on Japanese ships had no protection for their crews, who could be easily killed by strafing attacks by fighter aircraft. That made it relatively easy for the first dozen or so aircraft to eliminate much of the anti-aircraft fire. Also the American airplanes were better armored and had self-sealing fuel tanks, so they could absorb more damage. Japanese aircraft were more vulnerable and suffered increasing losses against the steadily improving USN anti-aircraft guns. That's part of why Japan turned to Kamikaze tactics, because their traditional bombing and torpedo attacks were becoming less effective. With a Kamikazi attack, it didn't matter that the pilot was already dead and his airplane was mortally wounded when it was by then free-falling toward its target.

One thing that I find annoying about the whole “Battleship vs Carrier” situation is that people believe that those who supported battleship use were blind idiots refusing to see the future. The reality of the situation was that carriers hadn’t proven to be reliable yet and could very well have been a complete failure. I forgot who said this but it perfectly encompasses basically all “old vs new” arguments on warfare. “If we build battleships, and carriers are the future, we’ve wasted our resources. If we carriers, and battleships are the way forward, we’ve lost the war.” So give Japan some credit, they had a very good reason to rely on the Yamato

Nathan Kingham Not to mention that every WWII major power except Russia made the exact same mistake. (Italy was especially bad, they built 3 new, quite advanced battleships only to never be able to use them properly) Actually Japan was the one who figured out carriers first. The Kido Butai was a completely revolutionary concept that rendered battleships obsolete. Too bad that it rendered Japanese battleships obsolete as well, giving the US the chance to catch up and overtake Japan by building even more carriers.
@phoenixjz4782
@phoenixjz4782 5 лет назад
Only to never be able to use them? >Bismarck sorties once, sinks Hood, and is sunk in turn >Tirpitz hides in port it's whole life >Yamato gets to fight at Samar - but gets chased away by a torpedo, and the next time it enters combat it's ended before it even gets close >Musashi gets sunk before she even arrives vs; >Littorio fights at the 1st Battle of Sirte covering a convoy. She later fights at the 2nd Battle of Sirte, damaging several cruisers and destroyers despite fighting in a violent storm, and delays the convoy so it is sunk by aircraft the next day. In company with her sister Vittorio Veneto, they endure countless air attacks as they move to engage Operation Vigorous - and then the British decide to cancel the entire operation instead of risking another surface action like 2nd Sirte >Vittorio Veneto sorties against Operation White, causing the British commander to launch his aircraft early and retreat - as a result two-thirds of them are lost. She fights at Cape Spartivento covering Italian cruisers by chasing off the battlecruiser Renown, and then later takes part in the Battle off Gavdos, damaging a British cruiser before being forced to retreat because of repeated air attack. She's hit aft, similar to Bismarck, but not crippled due to a far better rudder placement, and thus makes it back to port on her own power. Later she partakes in the attack on Vigorous with her sister. >Roma does not engage in surface combat during her career, and is sunk by two Fritz X guided bombs. Roma's career was pretty dismal, on par with most other major Axis battleships, but to claim that the Italians never used any of them is laughable, given they were the most active Axis capital ships of the war.
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 5 лет назад
Phoenix jz Yes, the Littorios had more actions than other end-generation Axis BBs or their Allied counterparts, but they still never actually did what a battleship is supposed to do, which is kill other battleships. So they still never got used for the one thing they should actually have done. I may have exaggerated things a bit, but the point stands: no WWII naval power was actually able to use its last, best battleships properly due to all of them becoming obsolete upon launch. Italy had the smallest ship-building capacity of the lot, meaning that by building 3 battleships they wasted dock space and resources that could (and should) have gone into carriers. (Notably, Italy never bothered building carriers before the war began, while Japan invested heavily into carriers and even Germany was able to make a halfhearted attempt. If Italy had a larger shipbuilding capacity or skipped the Littorios, things may have been different) Also: note that Tirpitz actually caused damage to Britain by just existing, though that mostly has to do with Britain being dumb enough to counter a ship that was obsolete upon launch.
@nathankingham1248
@nathankingham1248 5 лет назад
Bk Jeong what part of “carriers were never tested” was so difficult for you to grasp? Nearly all of the battleships you have pointed out had a major danger to the allies/axis. The Bismarck and Tirpitz held such a danger to allied shipping that it required them to for basically a witch hunt for both. Calling them “dumb” because they didn’t build carriers basically shows that you haven’t taken in anything I said. Battleships were not obsolete in the slightest. The sinking of the HMS glorious by the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau proved hat battleships were just as capable. Carriers were useful in the Pacific, yes. But in europe where all naval combat took place where land based aircraft could easily reach them, carriers would have been a waste.

The story of the Yamato is similar to the Santassima Trinidad, Spain’s mega ship of the line during the late 18th century and the Napoleonic Wars that was the most heavily armed ship ever built during the Age of Sail with a whopping 140 guns. She, like the Yamato, had similar problems in that she was outdated for its era as her immense size and bulk made her very difficult to manoeuvre and an easy target for British ships. She served in several major Spanish defeats including the Battle of Cape St. Vincent where she took heavy damage, was dismasted, and was nearly captured by the British before meeting her end at the Battle of Trafalgar where she was yet again badly damaged and dismasted before being captured by HMS Neptune, a 98 gun second rate ship of the line, and subsequently scuttled after the battle.

Japan still had plenty of CVs , but with the cream of their naval aviators gone AND the rapid obsolesence and loss of their aircraft, the die was cast. They had no more truly experienced pilots. Remember Japan used a quality over quantity strategy so squadrons for these major missions were made up of the hand picked best of the best of the IJN were USN doctrine had a smattering of sr. pilots mentoring many newer ones. These losses would reverberate through the IJN until the end of the war and be magnified 2 years later at the battle of the Philippian Sea aka the great Marianas turkey shoot where the Japanese lost +or- 600 aircraft and crews along with 3 more carriers vs minor US losses as the US was increasing the power of its naval air forces with the Essex class CVs replacing the prewar designs. and the Hellcat fighters replacing the prewar wildcats. After this the IJN was only a shell of its former self.

Technically not a lot of civilians in Japan knew about the three Yamato classes since it were kept a secret even after they entered service. The popularity only came after the war when they unclassified the files and popular culture kept on referencing this "super weapon". Most of the Japanese civilians during the war still regards the Nagato class as the pride of the IJN fleet and the navy even went on a whole fake news propaganda to cover up Mutsu's turret explosion just to make sure it doesn't impact moral. They picked Yamato over Nagato not only because she was the one with the bigger gun, she was also the one who's expendable compared with Nagato which was the poster battleship for the IJN fleet. It's funny that almost all modern media was claiming that Yamato was the pride of the Japanese fleet and said her sinking gave a huge blow to public moral when only a handful of people in Japan even knew about the three Yamato class ships.

there's some notes about the Yamato, one of which being embarrassing asf 1(idk if this is true), the US planes I think mostly just target the Yamato's port side(or basically just one side), because if torpedoes keep breaching holes on just one side, the ship would eventually list to port and sink faster. Unlike Musashi, which they attacked on both sides causing flooding to be even and longer for her to sink now the embarrassing, 2, during her last battle, she only managed to destroy 10 aircraft. Most of which was destroyed by the huge explosion after she had capsized

But if you would add the pure mass of the Captains of the Johnston and Samuel B. Roberts pure steel alloy balls during the battle that may tip the scale. Johannes Jonzon It’s funny how a lot of actions on both sides of that battle were misattributed. For one, the torpedo salvo that drove Yamato off for a good chunk of the battle? It came from Heerman, but Johnston originally got the credit. And literally all of Yamato’s hits during that battle were misattributed to battleships that weren’t even in the right place at the time. The same happened to the Japanese cruisers, which did the most damage.
