I dunno where u get ur examples from. Some r down right dumb sorry to say. If a loved one has gone missing and later returns, after the teary reunion, any sensible person would ask what happened before gathering TV stations attention.
@@shernaturally and saying sth is dumb is not mean spirited🤷🏾 it is just the truth. Why is there an attack on truth? Why not ground yourself in reality??
@Chinweokwu Okeke So if she tells you your words were mean-spirited, it's because she's not willing to hear the truth? Couldn't you be accused of doing the same in your reaction to her reply? Also, we should remember when speaking the truth, it should be spoken in love. Calling someone's thoughts that they've shared dumb isn't sounding like there's love in that "truth". Finally, our opinion isn't automatically truth, it's our opinion.
As black women, we shouldn’t have to do “protective styles”, just to grow long hair and retain it. I feel like we haven’t found out the real reason yet lol. We are all still learning about our hair 🙏🏾
There is still so much to learn about our kinky curls. You're right about that. And I feel like we're just getting started. I'm excited to see the discoveries my future daughter and future generations will unearth. The interest we are taking in our hair nowadays, I'm sure we'll make some more lifechanging discoveries. 🙏🏿❤️
You're correct, one of my girls hair grows to her butt and she doesn't used protective styling. She also cuts 14 inches off due to flat ironing and her hair grew back out long and curly. Her daily ponytail and occasionally let it hangs loose down her back. I myself do braids because I don't have time to comb through my natural curls on a daily basic for work.
@Miami- she's right. Black hair can't be managed the same way as Caucasian hair. Our hair likes 2B left alone. we just have to understand the meaning of protective styling.. Check out Priscilla Shirer's video on same.
I can’t do finger detangling. My hair tangles and mats to easily. The secret is not to rip through your hair with a comb. I am not heavy handed at all. I am extremely gentle and have a very light touch when it comes to combing my hair. It works for me. Plus I always wet my hair with a spray bottle before combing each section. Never comb your hair while it’s dry.
Hmmmmm. I really believe you could still try finger detangling. You have to saturate the hair with water and conditioner. Try the Aussie Vera method too. I have a video about it on my channel. It gives great slip.
@@shernaturally I tried that before and ended up with free formed locs that I had to comb out. I wet my hair before combing and am gentle and go slowly in tiny sections. I don’t lose as much hair as she does. And my hair is mid back length
Actually, you don’t want to comb the hair when it’s soaking wet. Hair is at its weakest when it’s wet. The hydrogen bond are broken when wet. So you’ll end up inflicting mechanical damage. The key with dry detangling is with oil.
@@CoilyCode Not necessarily true. Hair snaps and breaks easier when combing while dry. I’m almost waist length with extremely thick hair. Trust me. When I used to comb it dry my hair kept breaking once I it got to collar bone length. Also oil is a sealant not a moisturizer.
I 💯 agree with you re finger detangling. I have retained 15" in 4years. I recently went to a salon to get my hair treated and it was the first time a comb and blow dryer touched my hair. I'm gonna try to protective style for the next 6 months and see what length retention looks like. You're hair is gorgeous 🥰 Also in Canada
As you said conditioning and finger combing to detangled your hair and also oiling the hair from roots to tip. Hair grows from root to ends and if the ends are dried and brittle it will definitely break off and makes it seems like they weren't any growth. All hair grows only thing is the maintenance of your tips and scalp.
This is the best video I’ve seen about protecting your hair to retain length. I know about 12 people who I know personally that protects their hair and has very long or big afros. This is true we as blacks should retain our length and finger detangle. Anyone who disagrees ask your self is your hair healthy or have thousands of split ends and does it stop at the neck?, if so then you should consider this method
Nice 👍🏿 I get where you're coming from when you say leave them in as long as you can. Recently I put braids in and kept them in for 5-weeks and I grew at least 2" and I was like wowwww this is the key... so I know you're speaking the truth, it works!!!
Thank you for your tips and your detail explanation. I too have been doing the same with protecting styling after doing a big chop and my hair is flourishing. Blessings over your life and hair care journey. 🙏🏾🇯🇲
For those people who's hair breaks and don't grow out every month, mix apple cider vinegar with your shampoo or conditioner y'all can also add baking soda as well. Wash, condition and dry, oil and used a leave I'm conditioner.
I can attest to vinegar being a good cleanser. And adding baking soda is powerful. I've proven it. One has to be careful though because overuse can strip the hair of it's natural oils and make it brittle. Thanks for watching 🙏🏿💕❤️
@@shernaturally I only use the baking soda once a month and it's about a teaspoon or less. My hair is long and strong so are all my kids. I'm the only one that uses the vinegar and baking soda. Maybe because I've mixed multiple of oils to my hair before washing, then conditioning. Thanks for the information.
@@rihannaajie3866 don't do styles that pull on the hairline. Use mini twists as a portrctive style. They cause little stress on the hair. Use castor oil, finger detangling and reduce brushing.
You guys (Natural Academia and yourself) are the GOAT of natural hair care ❤️🔥 It's in the Rastfarian hair care phylosophy I think. I don't know what I did for RU-vid to have me land on your channel, but I am SO GRATEFUL I did. And then when you mentioned finger detangling, prolonged protective styling AND my FAVORITE natural hair care RU-vidr, Natural Academia, I knew I had to subscribe.
@@_ellasarpong_ hmmmm. I'm wondering if there's another issue at play here? What do u think is the issue? Do u think you need to see a tricologist or nutritionist? Or is there an aspect of haircare that you just haven't mastered? Usually we can pinpoint the issues so that's why I'm asking.
Protective Styles brought my edges out now I am regrowing my hair I always love the twists I will try them but I am letting my breath at least for a year.
Yes. Braids do this to me. Once your hair grows long enough for mini twist, I find that works best for my edges. I can get 3 weeks out of mini twist. I need about 2 more months of growth to get back to mini twist. I've been doing cornrows 2 weeks at a time.
You got to listen forever to this. Tip: mix a softening conditioner with water and spray your hair! My hair is 4C and medium short and a bit frizzy because I dye my grey roots too much! Use loads of hair reconstructors and Olaplex dupes. And I use part shampoo and part conditioner to wash my hair, a pre-poo. Never comb hair when wet. Good grief! 🇬🇧
So…… as your hair grows, your hair sheds 100 hairs a day. When you keep your hair in protective styling for a few months, your hair isn’t able to shed. Some shed more than others. I love this video. protective styles are the way to go. It’s been a year since I cut my Locs off. I cut my hair into a fade (bald). Once my hair started to grow out, i started to protective style and I’ve been doing it every since.
. The ends, all hair grows from the roots, if your ends are dry and not moisturized it will break off and makes it seems like it's not growing. Shea butter, castor oil, olive oils or whatever oils necessarily you have will protect your hair from dryness and prevent breakage.
Your hair is beautiful! So tell me, how long do you keep your protective style in your head… weeks/ months? How often do you wash and deep condition within that time? Thanks so much for sharing! Be blessed
I tend to keep my protective style in for a long time. For instance I like to keep braids for 6 weeks or longer. I wash and treat my hair while wearing them. I’ll wash once or twice while wearing braids.
Awwwww. Bless up Simply Shev! thanks for the support. Looking forward to sharing my imperfect hair journey with you❤️ so we can grow our kinky crowns together ❤️
🤸🏿♀️ happy for your results girl. I understand that protective styling doesn't work for everyone but it works for me and it still works for many, many people. I think the key is to know how long to keep them in because anything can be bad once it's overused.
Also talk about how your diet has changed and that’s has helped your hair to really flourish. Diet is very important Also exercise has stimulated circulation
I would wash them if I feel it's needed. I do what's needed at any given point. The only reason I didn't wash the braids in this video is because I don't sweat much in Canada so my braids and scalp can go longer without cleansing. I'm originally Jamaican so u can imagine the change my body went through when I moved here.🤷🏿♀️ I hardly sweat or have dust in my hair. But if needed I'll definitely wash my hair with braids. Right now I'm wearing cornrows and I washed my hair with them so it's something I'll do if needed
Oh my goodness I love your hair, infact I envy your hair,I can't wait to have same,I started my natural hair journey Last year and looking for more babe
Please I need your help. I watched lots of videos but not much about high porosity hair . once I keep my braids for almost two months they begin to lock and detangling is always stressful no matter how much patient I am not much length retention. Which hairstyle can I keep for 3 months please I need help.
Hi Joy! I am happy to hear that you are trying to keep your protective styles longer. That's a great start! If you experience lots of knots and tangles after two months, try keeping your protective styles in for one month instead. But it's important to spray with water and moisturize while your hair is in braids - regardless of how long you keep them. Moisturize and add butters and oil. It helps when it's time to remove the braids. Also, on the day when you're taking down your braids, wet your entire hair with water and conditioner BEFORE you start undoing the braids. And finger detangle with conditioner and water (several times if you can) before u go in with a comb. Those should help. But the most important thing is to know how long is too long for you. And if after two months you run into unmanageable issues, then it may be better to reduce the time you have the braids in.❤️🙃
protective style and I normally moisturize it always. If long term style works for u do it. If it doesn’t then just do short term. No matter what ur hair will still grow 😊
Hi, to de-tangle your hair mixed Shea Butter, Coconut oil, olive oil, Baby oil, Castor oil and Cantu leave in conditioner. (Or water) Massage into each Plat as you take it loose. Use only your fingers for de-tangling. Your hair wouldn't break. My hair is the same length as hers and it's no problem using this method. Good luck!
Beautiful "goat" voice. 💛 I'm with you on leaving the braids in for months! We've gone 6 months. The take down requires gentle detangeling because they lock where not braided, meaning the new growth only locks.
🤣🤣🤣 that silk and wool example. I have thought about that soooo many times. Because it is a sad truth. Our hair which is like wool is so delicate, and if we want long hair we have to not touch it for long periods. At least until we reach our desired length. But even then, we still have to be careful or it will break off😩🤣🤣 lol story of our hair
@@shernaturally You are doing a perfect job so far with finger detangling. It is difficult to put the comb down but through prayer and fasting, I was able to do so. I took this natural hair journey so seriously that I asked God to help during every stage, especially the detangling stage. I'm glad I did....My hair is EVERYTHING🤩
@@simplyandoime7344 I've never fasted, but I've prayed for God to show me how to care for my hair. I love the serious approach and I've heard other women say they've fasted.
@@shernaturally Wonderful. I most of the time attached fasting to prayer for greater results. It was a spiritual journey through the valley of darkness into the marvelous light of proper natural hair care.
I don't have a set schedule. I do it based on need. Sometimes during the height of winter here in Canada, I can go a whole month without washing. Other times I wash with protective styles in my hair. And Other times, I have to wash twice. I'm a big fan of washing only when needed and my needs differ from month to month.
Protective styling doesn’t mean you need to add synthetic hair. You can just braid your own hair and leave it for a week or two, wash, moisturize, rebraid.
Hi Portia. Those are the things I did. I didn't use a specific potion, oil, or mixture. I literally just find ways to keep most of the hair on my head once it grows out of my scalp.
During the 3 months, I wash if it's needed. I'm always examining my hair to see what it needs. So yes if I feel like it needs to be wash washed in the braids I'm not afraid to do that.
Good night my dear friend my corner are gone so need something to bring back my corner of my hair friend is so shame to have my hair open how the corner is gone I can't even put my hair in know stile friend I don't like wigs but I have to use wig now
Hi. Do u usually wear your hair in a tight bun at the back or on top of your head? Or do you usually wear tight braids? These are the styles that usually eat your corners away. There are similar ones too. Castor oil is great for hair loss. And onion juice. I can testify of both. Bit the best thing you can do is find ways to leave your corners. Don't brush them, don't put gel on them. Just put treatment and leave them alone. Mini braids work too because they can hide your corners without putting great stress on the hair. Hope these tips help.
