What's your favorite weird card art from the Bandai game? And what would you like to see for the next episode of Duel Sauce?

I really like how attack points go after the defense stat since this makes the defense a lot more important whereas in the current Yu-Gi-Oh! its pretty useless except on monsters that specialize in defense. It gives a reason to play Dark Magician instead of Summoned Skull

I've always been fascinated with this game. I actually tried to "remake" it with the idea of using Levels as a form of damage calculation (i.e. you take damage equal to your monster's level when it is destroyed by battle and you take damage equal to your opponent's monster when it direct attacks) in addition to Konami's mechanics. I still really want to perfect the idea, but it was really difficult trying to design cards lmao.

My Bandai deck list: 1 x Exodia the Forbidden One 1 x Left Arm of the Forbidden One 1 x Right Arm of the Forbidden One 1 x Left Leg of the Forbidden One 1 x Right Leg of the Forbidden One ... That's the whole list. Why play more card when five card will do?

“Is [Blue-Eyes] a male or a female?” Well, according to the manga, it is Kisara’s Ka, so that would make it female. So yes, you can totally play Blue-Eyes in the “Women beatdown” deck.

Bandai Yugioh would actually make for a pretty cool meta game. I can imagine it no longer seeing play since Konami's version is a lot more popular and "accessible" to newer players whereas Bandai seem to mostly rely on both the Anime and a degree in critical thinking to understand the rules of the game. But it makes sense, this was the first card game for Yugioh and there was no set rules until Battle City so trial and error will have some pretty big plays here.

Some of these alternative artworks are really good I have to say. Too bad we are not getting more of the similar, gritty, artwork in the latest Yu Gi Oh releases.

I knew it, I always suspected that there was an earlier version of the rules where defense was applied when you got attacked, no matter what position the monster is in. I thought that the attack and defense points of most monsters made a lot more sense that way.

I really like how the cards looked here, they have more of a random 1-year-lifespan game you'd find in small stores. The gameplay is also interesting, it feels even more kid friendly than the official '99 OCG Yu-Gi-Oh rules. Besides that, man is your editing getting better each video AND you also took the time to build Bandai format decks,,,,, that's dedication

I'd like to add that after this card game ended, Bandai revisioned the rules, rewrote them better and relaunched it as the 1999 Digital Monster Card Game, which was a hit with stores holding almost daily locals. About the rules: There is no "active player" in a turn, they are simultaneous and the battle is obligatory, meaning both players will play the monster card at the same time. If one or both players can't play a monster, the game hangs, making additional rules necessary. That's how I envision this: If one player can't play a monster from hand, either they lose or the other player captures the card they played as they'd have defeated it. If both can't do it, you proceed to the point calculation phase in the end of the game. Also, since you need to draw at least 1 card by battle, the minimum size of a deck would be 6 cards. I did wrote 3 blogs about the game in some Amino Communities that currently are private, and I would love to experience actual gameplay of this.

Interesting to see that the combat system is straight out from MTG, original YuGiOh manga has a lot of inspiration on MTG

The Bandai game seems very interesting! I actually found a shadi character card at a flea market for a few bucks back when I had no idea what it was. Granted it was moderately played at best, but it looked awesome and I had never seen a yugioh card like it. It also makes a great field center for my gravekeeper deck

Thanks for the deck list ideas. I have a couple hundred of these cards laying around that I won in an ebay action that me and a friend have been dying to play with for a few years. We decided on 25 card decks because the games tend to drag on. Really liked the balance list. Wish we had more quality Bandai Yugioh content on here.

I'm not sure how closely this aligns with your final interpretation or any actual community that's formed around the game, but here's my interpretation of the turn by turn flow. 1. Turn player may set as many spell/trap cards as they like, then they must play a monster if they have one. 2. After playing their monster, the turn player selects one of their monsters that has not yet attacked (or a monster that has attacks remaining in the case of things like Gate Guardian and that Blue-Eyes thing) and attacks with it into one of the opponent's monsters that has previously been played, but not destroyed. If the turn player somehow does not have any monsters capable of attacking, no battle occurs. If the opposing player does not have any monsters in play (such as on the first turn), no battle occurs and the newly played monster is not considered to have attacked. 3. Compare the attack of each monster with the defense of the other monster. If a monster's defense value is lower than the other monster's attack, it is destroyed. If a monster's defense value is equal to or higher than the other monster's attack, it remains in play. 4. The turn player draws 1 card from their deck and play passes to their opponent. Repeat until both decks are empty.

This version handles the DEF stat much better than the Konami version.

I legit think this version of the game has so much potential. You have to make every move count since your monsters are basically waiting to be defeated after the one turn they attack on. Absolutely in love with the Attack attribute going against the Defence one.

I can't help but wonder if at one point this game was supposed to have a rule where you lose if you can't summon a monster on your turn.

The Bandai game is super fascinating. There's a number of neat ideas, but it was overall poorly executed and that's putting it lightly. ATK attacking DEF is how I always thought it should've been. It gives actual value to DEF and makes those high ATK low DEF monsters actual glass cannons. La Jinn wouldn't have ruled OG Yugioh. Counting Level Stars was also a really unique win condition. Most games aim to take something away from the opponent to win and this also added a risk to just using the game's strongest monsters, since there was no tributing. The spreading of the game's rules throughout the cards themselves is really strange, though when I think about it, it's like the game itself is a puzzle. Very fitting for Yugioh. However, as neat an idea as it is, no. Just make a rule book. A lot of people don't have the patience, especially if this game came out nowadays. A lot of the rules are incredibly vague as well.

I think the counting the stars of destroyed monsters to determine the winner is pretty unique. And comparing the Atk and Def points when determining a battle makes Def a lot more important. In modern Yugioh the Def doesn't really matter as much when compared to Atk. But in this style of Yugioh the Def plays a much bigger role which I think is great.

Im the manga, the basic rules say that each player must have a 40 card deck, so I would guess that is the intended deck size. Why the game didn't use life points, I don't know

Great video talking about a very early part of Yu-gi-oh! history! In the modern TCG, the only character cards are 'Token Cards'.

I actually liked that the attack and defense points interacted in battle, like MtG. Would be interesting to see if Yugioh as we know it conducted the battle phase in that way.

That was very interesting. I can see why the Bandai game didn't catch on. It honestly feels less like an honest attempt at a tcg and more like a bunch of collectables for fans with some random rules thrown in because they knew people would want them.

There were a lot of good ideas here, but some bad ones too. Mostly the ambiguity and fact that the rules contradict themselves sometimes.

There are definitely things wrong with this game's balance (I know, it wasn't important when they made it). But on the surface it makes much more sense than original Yugioh. High-stats monsters don't wall you out for the rest of the game, stars are a much more gradual balance curve than tributes, and DEF actually matters.

We need a pack who use those artwork on the current card

Most of this was a hot mess, but having the battle result be based on defense was a great idea and honestly seems like it's closer to the original intent of the game.

Damn the art is beautiful. I love simple designs, nowdays its too flashy like an explosion in my eyes it tires me out. Plus atk vs def is alot cooler than what we have. I also liked the idea of rules being spread on cards and much of it was up for interpretation like playing a card game form of dnd where you have baseline rules but many are subjects to change to fit particular playstyles. Overall i would prefer this over the yugioh we have today, hoping it would keep that artwork and stray from too much powercreep.
