I'm going to do my first combo spin and so I was very much interested in the prep. It makes a lot of sense. I was thinking that you just spin one braid, the next and the next and then combine them. I imagine there are many ways to do this but I would not of thought of this way and it does seem like it would produce a more harmonious look. I don't mind some surprise but I would like to know that the way I'm combining my fibers will make for a melodious end product. I was looking through your other videos to see how this spin progressed but couldn't find anything. Can you give us an update on that project? Thanks so much.
I do enjoy your sharing your feelings about trips etc. I doesn't make me feel so strange. I am always anxious about leaving. I always enjoy the trip after we get on the road though. Hope you have a safe trip. Thanks for sharing your pics on IG. They are fun to see as well.
Love the Gathering Seashells socks and how the A Legacy colourway is knitting up. Have a wonderful trip. P.S. Ottawa is actually in Ontario and is Canada's capital city but it is right across the river from Gatineau, Quebec so it's almost in Quebec. 😄
Oh geez...even when I think I know something about Canada, I don't! Well, we are STAYING in Gatineau one night, so technically I will be in both provinces on this trip! ;)
Lisa, your projects are so beautiful and inspiring, and on top of that, you are one of the loveliest of humans, so it is always a pleasure to see what you're up to and watch your episodes. Thank you! And good luck at the June 1st show. If I lived nearby, I'd be beelining to go!
35:42 the weight to yardage ratio might be off in your mind because cotton is heavier than wool! Those cottons are super pretty- can’t wait to see what you make!
Laura Aylor has some lovely summer tops. A couple of them even used hempathy. I love your hair! I hope to turn gray one day so I can use the fabulous colors.
Oh, thanks! I'll check her patterns out. I know I've seen her shawl patterns, but I didn't know she had garments as well. And thanks...I like my gray most days, and the colors make it a lot of fun! ;)
So sad about advent. I have been an avid purchaser of them for years. I will miss them but totally understand. I will cherish this last one. ❤❤❤ Enjoy life and take time to smell the flowers!!
I love how your scarf turned out. I think it was a good decision to use the same weft yarn throughout. Although I'm sure many people will miss the opportunity to purchase a Holiday Countdown Collection from you next year, I can understand why you have decided not to offer them. I can only imagine the work that goes in to putting them together and family time is too important to sacrifice. The changes you've made to the shop sound very positive. I really like the idea of being able to buy a matching mini-skein with a self-striping colourway. I'm glad you're feeling better with the changes to your diet and hope you can figure things out soon.
Thanks, Carol! I'm happy with the light colored weft. It'll be interesting to see how the next one turns out using a darker weft with the came colors as warp. And thanks for your comments regarding the shop changes. It's so hard to decide what will work best for customers as well as for me! :}
Hi Lisa, I'm a new spinner (started in February). Can you tell me what is the advantage of a double drive wheel? I can't see to find anyone that can explain the purpose of a double drive v a single. Thanks so much!
Hi, and welcome to spinning! :) I'm not sure if double drive offers and advantage, per se. It's just a different set up that yields the same result with regard to take up on the bobbin. With a single drive using Scotch tension, the wheel's drive band does over the whorl, which then makes the bobbin go around. The Scotch tension band goes in the groove in the bobbin, applying various levels of pressure that you use to control how fast the bobbin takes up the single as you're spinning it. With double drive, the drive band is basically doubled so it's going around the drive wheel twice, but on top one strand of it goes over the whorl and the other strand goes in the groove in the bobbin; as you adjust the tension of that drive band, you're adjusting tension on both the whorl and the bobbin at the same time, which affects both the speed that the bobbin goes around as well as the tension on the bobbin and how quickly the single is taken up on it. It's really a matter of personal preference. I have two wheels, one with double drive, one with Scotch tension, and personally I feel like I have better control over the bobbin uptake with double drive, but that could be because that's what I learned first. :} I hope this helps!
Reposado by Thea Coleman is a beautiful summer DK top with gorgeous lace Lisa. I have it in my Rav Queue. Love your purple hair too. The Tegna does have sleeves but quite small
Oh, Pileated! They’re huge! Amazing birds! Lace: I’m just starting a swatch for Aimee Sher’s “Oolong Tank”. V neck, lace front. Fingering wt, but you may be able to math & modify for DK. My next/other project of hers is Weekday Tee, raglan cable/lace, DK (WoolDreamers Saona). Finishing up a shawl (Diving In) right now, forcing myself to work on it (versus set it aside, per my usual) before I start a new project. Oh and want to test a new-to-me heel, shortie sock in case things go haywire. Thanks for more ideas! Love the shawl!
I love my vneck boxy by Joji. I used a cone of cotton from Hobbii’s. I think it is written for fingering but I know you can do the math to find out what size to make. You are lucky to be making a smaller size because you have DK weight yarn! So many stitches! I did a split hem and made the back longer because I have a store bought sweater like that. I did short sleeves.
What a nice surprise to be announced as a winner. Thank you--I will be in touch. How cool to see the Pileated Woodpecker. We sometimes see them at our cabin and it's always a treat. Your shawl looks so bright and cheerful and I'm sure it would have attracted a lot of attention at your show. What a shame you had to dry out all your yarn afterwards but at least you caught it before it became a bigger problem. Your upcoming canoe trip sounds very cool. I had the opportunity to see a canoe go through the locks at Jones Falls on that route. Although I knew in theory how canals and locks worked, it wasn't until I saw it in action that I truly understood the process. Good luck with your new diet--I hope you are able to identify the problem and treat it without too much difficulty.
IMO pre-order is something like the Winter Magic stuff, where you are long term ahead ordering, otherwise it would be Dyed to order or in-stock. 🤷🏻♀️ I’ve never had to wait extended periods for the things I’ve had to have dyed or ordered, but I could be in the minority.
I am just in awe of the Gridlock pattern! Such a cool design and great use of Inversibles. Her Grandma Squared sock pattern would be a perfect pairing with your anniversary colorway -- crocheted afghans times two! In fact, I think I'm going to order a skein and knit Karen's sock pattern with it. I have a stack of three afghans and two quilts that were made by grandmothers and aunties in my family, and I too love that legacy.
Love all your projects and Im excited for your advent!! Chai tea is always my go to tea, but I have Christmas in Paris from Stash coming and I have heard amazing things!
Those socks are so fun! I'm really intrigued by the vertical stranding. It looks like her Refract Socks use it as well, and I think it would be a lot of fun to play with this technique!
I’d like to also try the “Ziggle” socks… cuz they make me Giggle. I LOVE the idea of a vertical stripe on horizontal stripe socks! How cool is that?? Have fun at the Show!
I've never tried vertical stranding, that sounds like a very interesting technique. It was hard to pick just one pattern, so here are the three that caught my attention: Open Books Socks, One-Two-Three Socks, and Grandma Squared Socks.
I'm more of a coffee drinker, but occasionally I drink tea. When I do, my fave is apple cinnamon. I fell in love with the gridlock socks when I received your newsletter but, alas, I'm on a yarn diet. If I don't win, I may have to break my diet!
Earl Grey has been my favorite since I was a teenager many, many decades ago. I squeeze fresh lemon in it. Could sip on it all day. The Open Book socks on knit picks looked great.
So happy to see your podcast popup! I saw her Open Book socks on Knit Picks! They are beautiful! I love your anniversary color! It has such special meaning! I thank my Grandmother every time I pick up a project. She was my inspiration.
I just purchased the Grandma Squared sock pattern. I added the Gridlock to my queue so I can easily purchase the pattern after I figure out which yarn I want ...
