I can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Albert Pike got his start as a public figure, by plagiarizing the poetry of his 14-year-old student prodigy, in his Newburyport, Mass. class, named Abby Poyen. He published her poems under their shared initials, and claimed authorship of all of it. This includes the "Hymns to the Gods' series.
Masonry was certainly influenced by the Enlightenment period and such. I don't know how large of a role they played. John Robison suggests they played a major role in the politics of the time through Europe. But would it fit the definition of a 'conspiracy' if Masons were influencing liberalism? Unless of course you could show that certain masons were 'conspiring' against the monarchies of the time. American Freemasons 'conspired' against the English Monarchy before and during the Revolution, in that respect. Even so, there were American Masons who remained loyalists, and I'm sure there were English Masons who were in favor of American Independence. The idea is that Masonry is not univocal. To generalize Masons influencing any political ideology on the whole is problematic because Masons by definition in the Constitutions operate on an individual, largely lodge-by-lodge, basis. If I say Freemasonry is guilt of xxx conspiracy. Anyone could also produce evidence to show that other Masons, probably a larger amount, were NOT guilty of xxx conspiracy. I think masons, as they are quite open for mans inner worlds,. And on the point u made of follow the moral laws of man. And the heart and what is known to be good... is very important to uphold... as many members with greater power wealth and such might have a different good in mind. Apotheosis in the magical context refers to attainment of godhood or immortality independent of God / One, whatever you want to call it. This is seen as the opposite of what the Western Esoteric tradition and Hermeticists in general want to accomplish. Hermeticists (being heavily inspired by Plato) sought Henosis (becoming One in the pre-existent state or Ousia). From a Western Esoteric tradition imbued with Christianity and Judaic ideas, this is sometimes frowned upon in the more Christian-oriented groups since idea of doing so is thought blasphemous, so they like Orthodox may have Theosis (becoming One with God in the Energeia but not the Ousia, thus not becoming god itself). Apotheosis not appropriate for Masons since their syncretic tradition is a form of esoteric Christianity (tying back to Ficino's translations of Arabic and old Platonic works) mixed with Platonism and some morsels of what remained of Hermetic knowledge, what they are seeking to accomplish is to become One with "God", whether through Henosis or Theosis. Apotheosis is more similar to the old ideas of emperors or kings becoming gods (for example Augustus was said to have become a god and their are depictions of this), which is not the same. If you don't believe me I suggest reading De Biasi's work on Masonry, he was formerly the grand master of Aurum Solis too (not sure if that is still the case). You would never hear any masons admitting this fact either. Hp blavatsky and many other theosophist also talk about it. And there's no way that you could honestly say that everything the Masons have done is good since many of them were largely responsible for the French revolution at just like the Illuminati so what the Masons see as good is actually relative to their own opinion sometimes. And just from the fact of them being a secret society, they have historically been very conspiratorial towards governments and that has made their reputation tarnished to what it is today whether or not they are evil does not even matter as far as that question goes because when you are sneaky and secretive everyone is going to be suspicious of you anyways. Don't get me wrong, I know freemason's in the town I live in. I am not a freemason, they went to school with my mother and have been very supportive of me. They are good people. There is no Masonic conspiracy, the framework is simply set up to give people power and as a result it is and has been abused. It's an oligarchy, an arm of the Republic construct. Well God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit is particularly Christian. Masonry does not possess a canonized perspective about a specific religion as such. Christian masons, however, often unite the Great Architect with their preferred title for the Christian God. Again, Masonry leaves these kinds of theological classifications up to the individuals. I am a Master Mason from Florida and have spent the last week in the library of the House of the Temple in DC which is open to all, yet few utilize. I have never experienced such kindness, generosity, and transparency. I actually could read unpublished handwritten works of the philosopher Albert Pike. I think the times for 'secrecy' is coming to an end since the persecution for our Craft is now more because of the 'secrecy' rather than the ideas that were hidden. In our age, all of the tenants are available to all. Our rituals can be found on ebay or Amazon. We absolutely should keep the rituals private, but I believe we are outgrowing the idea of a 'secret society'.
