I used to enjoy B&B until a few years ago, but now it's almost impossible to write a comment anywhere and not get attacked by any of the mods, especially the ''admiral'' as you call it. As soon as a debate is started between two or more people even if it's respectful, a mod appears and warns everyone to stop what they are doing. I think at this point the whole reason B&B exists is to make money out of the vendors and contributions as well as from the ads that have plagued the whole website. I do keep an eye from time to time on some of the topics, but I don't comment anymore. It's just not worth wasting my time some of those edgy and immature mods, who act like 12 years old kids who were given administrative rights in an online video game and are banning people just because they can.
@@garyjohnson9787 Focus never seemed to mind it when when I made videos showing how I liked their stuff. My sources indicate they seem a bit indignant towards me now.
Slash McCoy was banned from the beatdown thingy, no? That Gong blank (the forging die and the size and recipe of the raw steel heated and forged into that die) is quite possibly the same as the 7/8" round head Bökers & Wackers...whether those steels start from India as flat sheets vs rolled bails, however, I don't know. Maybe they still have a bunch of the old raw steel awaiting a sale and a forging, but that is not the case for the 115crv3 in 5/8 & 6/8. They don't seem to have the curved bias all the 6/8" and 5/8" shouldered Solingens of today exhibit.
@@thesuperiorshave I am not sure if Slash got the “right foot of fellowship” from the “The B&B Elitist School of Bevel Setting and Member Beatdowns” or not. One story said that one of his key understudies in the practice of lapping film sharpening got banned for some ridiculous reason and he dropped out. Either way, the place is sure falling into disarray because Joel isn’t making enough $$ and the band of moderatoritas can’t stop dictating how its membership uses their own stuff. 😎 Thanks for the info on The Gong Razor, it was one of those more sizable pieces with a price too good to pass up on. Happy 4th a bit late Bill, hope you had a nice one. Talk powder = baby powder.. good stuff and last forever. I brought a big can when i was competing in archery.. going for my 2nd shave after honing on a "convex" stone after posting this.. finnished flat though, 100 laps on black ark, plus 100 on burnished black ark.. distinct difference in sound and potential in feel.. let's see. The first impression was that's it was at least not worse comp. to my flat hones.. with the caveat that I am not a hone mesister.. Regards J
@@dnamol Thank you Johan. Congratulations on the new step in your honing pursuits. Never seek to be a Certified Honemeister. If the Club ever finds out you tried a shaped hone, you will be defrocked in about 10 minutes. 😎
You have to set that bevel man, and it needs to be on a flat stone, you know. If it is not flat you need step on it and grind it flat, even if you end up with a toothpick, as long as it's flat. LOL. The stone also needs to be checked with a certified straight edge. This is really important when you hone a banana shaped object. Take care Bill:) I still have nightmares after watching someone set a bevel on a Filly in mint condition.
@@jpo31 Hi John, hope you are well. Thanks for watching. Some interesting things I have learned about razor making in the last month or so. 1) Thiers Issard now only uses flat rotating discs at different grits, then a paddle strop. No hand honing at all. 2) I also saw a newer video from Dovo where they still use those crazy crowned abrasive gizmos, but they have evolved to using black tape in the honing process. I wonder when the uppity Honemaster Superior Class will start making videos of their victory dances as interest in this unusual hobby fades off into the sunset. 😎 Classy looking Woolfson blades you have been playing around lately. 🙂 Best regards.
Thanks for the video Bill you opened the Pandora's box in shave ready testing 😂 Personally I'm using a cherry tomato while I'm honing to test a blade and see how it goes. It might sound strange but I can understand not 100% but let's say 60%-70% if the edge is cutting fine. The way I see my edges by feel is that if the razor when do the slicing test on the tomato goes in like knife threw butter as the expression says then I'm good. If it has a "harder" feeling when I slice a bit then I know is not good edge. When I say harder If I can make a comparison about the feel in the hand is this..... if you cut an apple with a knife you do feel it in your hand no matter how sharp is the knife. If you cut ice cream or butter you feel it very slightly almost no feedback coming to your hand something on those lines. But I'm not relying on the tomato I do check it under the scope and defo the shave is the final test. The test with the hair though ...... that's a bit tricky cos even a dull razor can tree top an arm hair. I never rely on a hair test for my opinion the hair test doesn't say nothing. Not to mention that facial hair are thicker and coarser than arm and head hair that are easier to cut.
@@_Dimitris Thank you for the nice comments Dimitris. Nothing wrong with tomatoes other than their acid value or availability. I used to sometimes use grapes. All give a useful indication of push cutting vs slicing and a cutting force that is required. Many hone quite successfully on visual/magnification…then a shave test alone. Love your channel. Nice presentations.
I would love to share one recent interaction I had 😂 (I should have know better than to come out into the forum culture) .. Hey Bill! Great video as always. I agree that one's honing method is a personal decision. It's amazing that some people in the wetshsving are up in arms about honing. I realize there are some people who sincerely want to help and that's all well and good, but to browbeat a shaver by adamantly stating that he should hone the "correct" way is ridiculous. I believe if you get a great shave after you honed your razor regardless of the method, then why should it matter to these naysayers. I think that I should suggest a new shave slogan. It's your razor, hone it your way. Lol! Have a great weekend
@@seanstapelfeld Not sure, but I thought I heard somewhere that to get into the B&B Honemaster Superior Class you have to have a “Set The Bevel Here” tramp stamp. 🤣

@@Martins-Shaves123 Thanks Martin. I have always wondered who goes out to milk the donkeys for their soap. There was a forum I was a regular in when I took up wetshaving. I learned a lot there and made great friends. The end started when gssixgun Glen Mercurio attacked me for not using flat hones. My honing style detractors eventually got me banned for talking about the things I was working on. I later joined B&B thinking that since they tolerated JPO talking about convex hones I ‘might’ve be able to survive there. I was wrong, my tenure was 2 weeks. I totally welcome the angry Badger & Blade Fanboys like DaBOSS to my channel cause I have so much fun sharing with them. 😎 Believe it or not there were a couple of guys contacting RU-vid trying to get me tossed here for honing heresy. Dr. Matt once made a reference to what I think was probably the same sort of BS for showing folks how to “correct geometry”. People can be so petty and childish over the stupidest stuff. I also used talc in an industrial setting. We would buy the stuff sold to billiard shops to help avoid sticky cue sticks, although that is mostly corn starch these days. I figured if the men’s scented talc’s ever become totally unavailable I’d just get some of the industrial stuff.
@@DevanJackson I never actually looked up the steel recipe for 1.2210, but I think I heard that it has been for years, the only carbon steel for razor blanks coming from the Hugo-Herkenrath forge that is used by all Solingen razor makers in addition to others. Changes in performance come from heat treating and tempering that can be done by individual razor makers. I have a couple of razors from RSF that were done in 52100 steel which I like better.
Watching the honing, sounds like your problems are from the lack of a good bevel for the flat hones. For that awesome coticule edge, it was always important to have a good bevel. If you wanted the best coticule edge your stone could offer I would go to a 10k or so synethic then finish on the coticule with oil and avoid any slurry (or ballistol). If coticule not sharp enough after that I would do some laps on the ark. Not sure what flat stones you have. Sounds like you try to make up for work not done on the bevel on the mid-range or finishing stones. If you had a flat coticule still, could also just take an already shaving razor to it with ballistol - no slurry - and see how that works out.
@@ChrisDaBOSS7 Thanks for watching and identifying my problems from the modern prismatic triangle honer’s handbook. For years, I have heard and read the “you failed to properly set the bevel” mantra from the Greatest of the Honemaster Superiors whose skills at making sure everyone knows how great they are usually exceeds their ability to sharpen. Had you actually listened to what I had to say about why I abandoned a flat effort on that shave piece, it is unlikely you would have even entered a comment. Like most Badger & Blade sycophants, you fail to understand how much less steel removal is required to hone a razor from a crowned surface. Many hamfisted razor enthusiasts are out there diligently grinding the bejeebers out of their razors to “set the bevel” and run through their progressions as lead by the rabid majority of honing experts and moderators at the dying B&B Shave $hithouse. Be sure to give the Admiral who ‘Luvs his Supper’ my regards.
@billm.2677 not really a nice response to someone trying to help. Sorry I didn't care to watch the whole video. Always enjoy watching people hone, dont always enjoy listening to people complain. Sorry I can't be of more help! Good luck with your journey!

@billm.2677 I usually don't expect an apology from people similar to yourself. Guess there is entertainment value, though, in watching someone respond so strongly to someone offering some help. I think you should spend less time so fixated on Bader and blade and more time working on your honing skills! I think the triangle cut outs were very cute though!
@@ChrisDaBOSS7 “people similar to yourself”…such typical shave forum attack lingo. “Offering some help”…uh yeah, sure man, sure. Then, just like the Admiral, who ‘luvs his supper’, you will have the authority to regulate how everyone uses their own stuff then so eloquently degrade the non-conformist. I will continue to work on my honing skills, that I am sure already far exceed your own. Do feel free to tag me in on your channel when you make that video showing why you think my honing methods are so inferior. I will be watching for when you actually shape up a couple of stones for some real experience. Do remember though, even when Steve56 (that most famous Jarrod hater supreme) back beveled a bent up TI razor on a curved stone for the first time, his out of the gate result equaled that of his cumulative years experience, gear and methods.
I started this last night, but couldn’t finish. 😴💤. Started over. Good shave. Good commentary. I personally like that Dovo razor form with shoulder. 👍🏻
Beautiful Dovo 'masters' lovely razor , and i totally agree with your remark on wet lathers , i stalled on drying lather sunday , not nice i was just messing about edge testing . Not a great experience. Stainless not my favourite! Your Masters is fabulous 👌
Thanks Martin. When purchasing, I was hoping for a NOS finding on the discontinued SS model which usually can be found for about 2X the price on this carbon steel model.
@@Martins-Shaves123 Not so much the steel preference for me, but the particular shoulderless 6/8 forged blank form that was only used in a few SS models.
Thank you so much for posting this video, it really helps. Now after you shaped your stones, do you simply hone as you normally would or did you have to change the way you hone? For example did you gou from doing Japanese half strokes to simple x strokes? Oh and I will be buying the Jarrod plate the first chance I get. Thanks in Advance, Stephen Davidson
Hello Stephen. Thanks for watching and your kind comment. There are some similarities to the type of stroke needed to hone on a curved surface vs. a flat one, most notably what is called ‘the rolling X stroke’ to be the most common. Please do understand that in the using of a curved hone, the contact points are more isolated and the razor has to be moved in such a way that you are intentionally focusing abrasive energies to where it is required on each individual shave piece. I have produced a fair amount of YT verbiage found on my channel but one of the most direct and concise tutorials I like is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-clwv21XuEh0.htmlsi=6p2QJilhHjh3qzmL I do wish you success when you undertake this journey. My top recommendation is to find ‘your best way’ to ‘evaluate’ your work during the process. In the part where I am ‘backbeveling’ with a more curvy, more coarse stone, I mostly rely on visual magnification of some sort. Early on, do try to keep this coarse curvy abrasive work back from the apex a little. As you move to the less curvy/ finer abrasive parts where I am focused more on working the edge, I started out using thumbpad tests, finger nail tests and ultimately the cutting of tomatoes or grapes to evaluate. Then, I found the use of polystyrene packing peanuts to be able to give a nice range of feedback that can show which areas of the edge needing more isolated work and how keen my work is progressively becoming as I move from a slice cutting action towards a target of a low force push cut. Stay tuned, I will try to help you any way I can as you take a whack at this. Bill
Hi there Bill! Nice shave and razor. Need to try a stick at one point. Got my new little coticule and convexed it (1 axis only.. free-handed it, so nothing fancy). Now it's time to try if this is the future... LOL. Greetings from the North..
Great shave Bill! I love the look of the Sunday Shaver, wish I had known about it before my girl got me my Lowe... the gold spine on my lowe is too fancy for me. I'm slowly taking a liking to clubman but its a slow process. Glad to hear the water system is not leaking anymore my friend! Cheers
I rarely travel , but a shave stick is wonderful, the Tabac stick lasts forever, its huge 😅. Lovely gold panel and file pattern spine ,' Sunday shaver ' pretty razor , great shave Bill .
I have a partial puck of Tabac. Great soap. There was a gent who bought it and hated the aroma so he grated half of it into a bowl and let it sit outside in the carport for a week or so. He still hated it and sent me the remainder of the puck. It is not my favorite flavor, but I’m not offended as some seem to be.
Well done again Bill 👏 that's why you're a brilliant experimentalist ,be it flat bevel or concave , and gauging your stones feedback is so cool 😎. Slates I find good 👍 and generally more modest in orice . Great shave and talk !
Watched the second half of the video. Kids got me. But anyway, great that the vender got back to you. At least we know now it is a natural stone. Pyrite may be the answer to why folks have reported why the ILR damages edges. In all fairness pyrite can appear in any slate. It’s up to the miner /vender if they choose to put it on the market. Thanks for the video. And don’t talk about horse meds; the machine will have you silenced.
Interesting. I didn't know that DMSO was a wood bi-product. I have used it for years for pain management. It is one of the few things that actually works for me. Of course I make sure the area is clean and use clean cotton swabs. Thanks for sharing.
If I were going to use that illegal stuff, I suppose I could get it to work too! Obviously we need to follow the advice of the medical authorities and make sure that the use of this stuff stays with our horses.
Great shave, nice feedback from that razor. She’s a beauty!! Great talk! Appreciate all the info. Hope your plumbing repairs go well. Looking forward to those highlights, too. Thank you!
Wow! DMSO… my mother used to get this stuff from the family doctor for her arthritis years ago. She swore by it. I remember well when TPTB relegated DMSO to veterinary medicine. Mom was so disappointed, but where there’s a will. She found another source. Nice memory trigger, Bill. Excellent shave. Beautiful razor. I just looked up the ILR… ok I’m considering.
I remember hearing of sports teams using DMSO for athletic stresses before the likes of Dr Fauchie and Dr UToob outlawed such practices. Worked well for my horses.
I had the same feeling with the running water stick, it felt to harsh and I think makes it prone to damaging the edge. I used the dawn dish soap but not the balistal. I do not have much left, I need to order more of it. I look forward to seeing your shaping video. I think it is compulsive honing and razor buying disorder for me. lol I just can't stand to see such lovely razors in disrepair and not being used that I can't say no to getting them. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Rich. I have a barber size Jasper in inventory just in case I want to give it a try. For finishing, one should take a look at Ballastol or maybe honing oil as an option on the IRL. I liked it better than water. So, for my first real success honing flat, I went from diluted coticule slurry to ballastol on this ILR. I figured it was time to learn something different. 😃
Thx. Anxious to see what it does when I make the reverse side into one of those “rabid minority” “bumpy hones” 😅 I do gotta try that snap your fingers cooking style…pure class!
CSD..yeah.. "They" said straight razor would be cheaper than cartridge ones.. Honestly what bs, if i only stayed with canned foam and disposable cartridge.. Now I have 4 C.V.H mk31 and bidding on yet another one, on top of the rest, not to think of the soaps, creams, pre and after shave's, brushes, and now I am likely to go down the rabbit hole and get another coticule to try convexing. Puhh, life was easier back in the days when you got a pack and a new can in the supermarket.. Easier yes, but maybe not as fun. Nice video Bill. 😀

Thanks Johan. I actually do know of a guy who saved money. He went exclusively with a 1/2 DE shavette and only used blades once. I tried that for a while and got 5 shaves per blade. I started getting all bound up and missing the fun, so I repented.

Thank you Boris. The same thing can be accomplished with little tomatoes or grapes, I just did not always have them available. “Bill’s Test” - I can name the “Experts” that will be triggered by that one. Much the same as when I suggested dragging a cottonball across the face like was done to me by a State Board Examiner when my wife passed her Barber Exam. Folks who bragged about the ultimate BBS shave all of a sudden were not really all that good.
It can be such a gamble when buying equipment. Some times you hit the jackpot. But that is rare, at least for me, but it sure is a thrill when it happens. I just got an ILR and I am very happy with the one I got. I wouldn't consider it a fine finisher, but it cuts nice and has a great feel to it. Thanks for sharing.
Wow 👌 beautiful 'Dovo Masters ' I've not owned or tried one 😢 as for being carbon vs stainless? I prefer carbon , hopefully one day youll get one and do a comparison! ( id bet the carbon would win ) 😅. Nice shave Bill !

Nice face maintenance tool. Dont be too greedy, you got a hell of a deal as it came 😂. Enjoyed it as always, hope you share your slate shaping with us. If you don’t get really good results, I will be shocked.
The ILR stone was the first natural stone that I bought and I like it. I think it gives good feedback and I like the way it feels while honing. I've only used it a couple of times since I shaped it but yeah it worked well flat and so far just as well curved
I baught the exact same razor from a Norwegian retailer. They also showed the shoulderless stainless in the description. I could have returned it, but decided to keep it. The one I got also came with a concave bevel. It didn't take much work to improve it. My razor had some geometry issues. It felt like I baught a pimped up best quality razor.
Pimped up Best Quality 🤣 That could mean that at full retail pricing the current Dovo Master’s is a $50 whore in a $20 market. 😉 I suspected that I was not going to be receiving the SS version discontinued in 2014 even though the seller said he purchased them about 8 years ago.
