Nikon's commitment to lifelong quality and product compatability is admirable, and typical of Japanese manufacturing. Just like with musical instruments, Japan has the truest dedication to quality. Japanese manufacturers like Murumatsu, Yamaha, and Pearl offer instruments that last a lifetime and give solid performance. Steven, thank you for sharing your passion with the rest of the world.

I really enjoyed your video…so much! My first camera was a Nikon F2 and the F3 was my second. I have tremendous respect and appreciation for Nikon’s level of technical expertise and innovation in creating the F3 user experience. I’ve had mine since the 90’s. It’s an absolute jewel. I have been shooting Nikon mirrorless for a few years. Recently though (now 2024), the current resurgence of 35mm film photography brought me to take my F3 out of retirement. It is in perfect shape - still works flawlessly and looks like new. For me handling and using the F3 is a sensuous tactile and fully engaging experience. Just looking at my F3 makes me smile! It is always so nice to listen to others, like yourself, who recognize and appreciate the beauty and joy of using things made with great care - and made to last. Thank you.

Super interesting. I have been shooting with a Nikkormat FT3 from around 1983-84 up to when I switched to digital and had no idea why some of my lenses had that shoe. I still have this camera and it works like new. Best camera ever. Thanks for the video!

For Nikorrmat and Nikon F Photomic, after mounting the lens, you need to rotate the aperture ring all the way forward and back to establish the max and min apertures. It was said that you could spot a Nikon shooter from a mile away from this maneuver 😂

I had both slrs in 1990s: fm2 and f3 with motor drives. Those years it was impossible to shoot indoor without flash. And all the f3 advantages are nothing versus it's flash photography possibilities. Even with dedicated sb-16a. F3 is absolutely awful for flash photography, the worst slr for all my 30-years news photography career. I can't say this about fm2, it was fine balanced camera. May be f3 is good for amateur 'street' modern photography, but for pro using it was awful. One good thing - it was real workhorse, absolutely survival in any conditions. But does any amateur really need it?

Nice video as usual, but you are right Steven, this kind of bokeh is subjective. I find it distracting, loud, gimmicky and pretty darn ugly! You have to have a strong stomach for this stuff. Ok, I am going back to re-watch 'Shooting Film in Kyoto.'

Steve, greetings from Okinawa! I woke up this morning, grabbed my iPad and signed into RU-vid. This video appeared as an option and as a subscriber to your channel, I decided to view the content. Dude, amazing review! So much so, that even before it was finished I visited B&H and preordered the lens and an adapter for my Leica M mount bodies. This lens will see action on my M11, and on my SL2-S. I might even try it my M8 and M9M, but I think Live View might produce the better results. Thanks Steve! Continued success to you and yours. Steven, when I first got my old expired 5222 I searched the internet for info on it, your image with the bike in an alley in Tokyo was the first one I found. I favorited it instantly and it has become my reference image for Double-X. I haven't reached the level of those images yet (not to mention that my country doesn't offer street photo locations similar to what you can get in Asia, a style I really love), I hope I do someday.

A most excellent video! Concise and spot on. Icarried both bodies in my days shooting for newspapers. I preferred the FM2 because I like a smaller lighter body. But there is no argument that the F3 is the supreme body. You could use it to pound in tent stakes and then use it to photograph the tent. I still have both of those same bodies working after some 40 years.

A good video, except your chart at 12:05 about compatible cameras for Non-Ai lenses shows FE as not compatible, which is wrong. Nikon FE can take Non-Ai lenses in the same way as the F3 and F4. You need to push the tab back and mount the lens. Anyone watching this video should be made aware of the error in the chart.

Reality check - Nobody in this modern era are using motor drives. As a matter of fact, film photography is now lauded for its slower, more intentional framing and composition -Not machine gunning frames. We can do that with digital.

Hallo Steven, I really like vintage rangefinder lenses they are so small. I have a Summicron 35mm version 3 which flies a little bit under the radar. It's a lot cheaper than the Summilux and minimum close focus distance is 0,7m. It's sharp in the center and has the Leica glow wide open. It compliments modern lenses pretty well. Wonderful video. @@StevenTanno A video on film developing is great. Really look for to seeing it. On top of the technical knowhow and skills required with film development, there is also the space to store chemicals and to undertake the process. No easy task in small living space. It should also be interesting to see how available the supplies would be in this era of digital photography. My only thought of doing development myself had to be some four decades ago. 😅
