Permaculture, Seasonal Living, Artisan Homesteading Skills. Welcome to Moat Cottage, I'm Elissa Jayne, I started my homesteading journey last century, on large acreage in the Strathbogie Ranges, with fully established orchards, a huge veggie plot, overlooking a gorgeous creek, surrounded by hills. It was a dream location to learn & live. I then moved to the modest Moat Cottage, 1/6th of an acre including the structures. Refusing to give up the homesteaders lifestyle, I discovered that so much can be achieved on a backyard homestead & I encourage you to learn & expand your skills and experience. GROW organic vegetables, fruit & herbs. Stock and organize the LARDER PANTRY shelves. PRESERVE THE HARVEST by pressure canning, water bath canning, dehydrating, fermenting, pickling & freezing as well as COOKING in the homestead kitchen. Learn how to make NATURAL HERBAL REMEDIES & start your own Apothecary cupboard. There is also plenty of backyard MUSCOVY DUCKS & CHICKENS information too.
I have a wild Muscovy duck start laying eggs in a flower pot on my balcony a while back so I got her a bigger flower pot and put hey in it. I’ve seen her have 5 different batches of babies now but this last time she has been on the nest for 2-3 months and keeps taking out eggs that seem to have been cracked put of her nest and dropping them on the floor of my balcony. I’ve taken them away today bc I’m pretty sure they are all dead. One hatched about a month ago but she abandoned it to continue sitting on the nest.. I even found and returned the ducking to her but she abandoned it again. No eggs have hatched since and it’s been far too long for any of those eggs to be alive. Is this broody behavior? Is this something that happens sometimes with ducks? Thanks.
Hi Elisa, how are you, Can I please ask you a question?. Ok so I'm new to keeping musvovy ducks, my question, after mum has got fed up of her ducklings, how long until she might start laying again? Also the face mask of my girls, corunickle? Is that the name?. Lol One is orangy red another is bright red, I know with chickens they are ready to lay once they are red,, . Also Mallard type ducks have the "egg bulge" when ready to lay, is this the same with muscovies? Thanks, Craig, from UK Now In Thailand (where my ducks are)
Yes dry your Lavender flowers first, make your hot/cold pack using natural fibre material and when heating in microwave, have a mug of water in there for the moisture required when microwaving. 😊
Hi, I want to make an acidic tincture of podophyllum root for treating warts. But I do not find your video on making tinctures. Thanks for any help. I'm sure you are busy. Best. L.
I love your channel and your videos, but am so sad that notifications are turned off. RU-vid has your channel flagged as content made for kids and won’t release notifications. I’m sure it’s just a setting that you could change, and it would help your channel grow so much more if people know when you post a video.
I raise rabbits for meat and have had a hard time getting things done just right with the instapot - it is really easy to under or overcook them in my experience. I decided to slow cook mine in my instapot after watching this, but I did so fully submerged (I did about half rabbit broth and half water). It took 4-6 hours before it started to get tender enough to be interesting, and by that point it was too late for dinner, so I put it on for another 14 hours and had it for lunch the next day. Two things I noticed: #1 - fully tender, no worries there. #2 - everything was falling apart, and just getting it out I had to use a smooth with holes and in the end a strainer because it wasn't just falling off the bone tender, the bones were disconnecting from each other tender. I deboned and shredded it way faster than what I normally have to go through #3 - I missed a few small vertebrae as I was going through the meat which one of my daughters was not happy about and had a hard time eating the rest once she found a bone. 20 hours was too long, I'll try a straight 6 next time and see how it is #4 We got way more from it then we did cooking it and taking it out where we had to debone it ourselves - I didn't weight it, I usually have a hefty carcass for bone broth later - instead I have a small handful of bones and nothing else. Way better efficiency-wise and water was a broth that was ready for two soups we made the same day. The first meal was a white chicken (rabbit) chili.
Hi, we have a duck nest on our 3rd floor balcony.. im worried about how the babies are going to get down, is she gunna fly them down one by one?? or at a certain point after they hatch should i bring the nest down to the 1st floor?? its in a planter , we live in a south FL community with ducks all around
i am quite confuse because your muscovies has grown so much in only two months wheras mine took atleast 3 months to look like your muscovies, pls update
Lovely video, very informative. You made a comment near the end of this video saying that you preserve your duck eggs could you explain a little more about this or do you have another video on this and what is your process. I have five females and one male. At the moment we have let one of them sit on some eggs. Thanks
Thanks for sharing. I have Cuckoo Marans chicks coming next week, unfortunately it doesn't look like my broody hens are in the mood anymore. So we will see, I have a brooder box set up to give them their first drink and feed. And then I'll just go from there. It's been a while since I've had chicks, and never Marans so it was nice to familiarize myself to the growth rate
If it’s only been waterbath canned and in good condition, then you can reuse. If lid has been pressure canned then Don’t reuse. I don’t reuse my lids as it’s not worth the risk of an unsealed lid in the future.
Hi I love your blog My female Muscovy doesn’t like Mazuri food and you mentioned that you give them grains when they are brooding Can you please tell me what grains they like? She does like cracked corn submerged in her drinking water Please help Thanks Katie
Can you show us what each tincture, salve, & oil is used for. I am a newbie and I want to learn what each herb is good for and what side effects if any or dangers os use there are. Do you have a book of recipes that tells us also what they are used for?
