In this video, I cover five signs and traits to look out for in a bullying boss or coworker using coercive control tactics.
These include:
1. MICROMANAGEMENT - Coercive managers often excessively monitor and control every aspect of their employees' work
2. GASLIGHTING - Perpetrators may deny or distort the reality of situations, causing victims to question their own perceptions and judgment.
3. ISOLATION: Coercive individuals may attempt to isolate their victims to establish complete dominance over them.
4. THREATS AND INTIMIDATION - Veiled or explicit threats to job security, promotions, or reputation are used to manipulate employees into compliance.
5. UNPREDICTABLE BEHAVIOUR - Perpetrators may flip between being charming and intimidating, creating a sense of fear and uncertainty.
In this video, I also discuss the Duluth Power and Control Wheel. Adapted from the DA model, this simple but effective tool will help you establish if bullying and intimidation are occurring in the workplace. It helps in establishing facts over feelings, which can be incredibly helpful when understanding coercive control and bullying.
I also provide simple but effective tools for managing bullying and coercive control both from an individual and an organisational standpoint.

Another video says leave and get another job. I agree with that, talking this over hardly achieves a positive outcome, its usually embedded in the company

Hi Jim - I was always recommend speaking to someone in authority about it first. In my experience of dealing with this with many clients, things can sometimes get resolved. However, if your company sides with the abuser, my advice would always be to leave sooner rather than later. Leaving it too late can cause catastrophic harm to your physical and mental health.

And what if your next boss will be the same or even worse 🤷🏼‍♀️ I always thought of leaving job with a reason that your boss is toxic - what will be your reply for a next interview with a new company “why are you leaving your company” - what should I reply ?

@@AT-bq1kg Yes, you're absolutely right. Unfortunately, psychopaths make excellent CEOs of organisations who are all about the money (not the people). Their innate traits mean that they don't care who they trample over or what rules they bend as long as they get the result they want.

As I look back on bad bosses, one toxic job interview comes to mind. I was an attractive 25 year old and was told the employer (son of the business owner) was VERY busy and needed to meet over dinner. The "job interview" consisted of the manager literally talking about himself for 2 solid hours and not asking me any job interview questions. It felt so bizzare, but I took the job anyway. Working at their company was the longest and most painful 11 months of my life. He and his family eventually ran their business into the ground and went bankrupt within 5 years.

WOW! You really can't make this stuff up! You've very clearly illustrated what most of us do (me included!)... we see the red flags and completely ignore them. No judgment here - I've seen plenty of red flags over the years and chosen to ignore them thinking it won't be that bad, or it'll all work out! Thanks so much for taking the time to share, Jan. ❤️

DONT GO TO HR. THEY DONT CARE ABOUT YOU.
@JoBanks
@JoBanks 7 месяцев назад
That's not always true! It very much depends on the company you work for. That's why I always recommend raising it with HR and if nothing is done, then consider leaving. I've worked with clients where it absolutely has worked. They've been taken seriously and the abuser has been dealt with. However, it very much depends on the company.

Document everything suspicious, look for another job, try to job transfer internally, go to HR, use FMLA, use all your vacations. Those are the steps you can take. Good luck!

I have experienced this. It feels so confusing, especially in a "christian" environment when your leaders are "pastors" and then when you are free of them, you can see things clearly. It is difficult when they put others in their same frame of thinking. I believe this is the equivalent to modern day witch hunts. You can't win.
@JoBanks

Unfortunately, 'positions of power' such as pastors or clergy do attract these types of people. They are attracted to the power not the religious beliefs. I'm Christian and I know people who go to church on a Sunday but who are downright cruel to those around them - even family members. I hope you're OK. Stay strong.

I'm going through this EVERYWHERE I decide to go work and EVEFRYWHERE I am online! It's been going on for 3 years and it seems to involve fusion centers and a church ...there's HUGE discrimination over my work and its very PERSONAL.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through a tough time. Unfortunately, people like to attack what they don't understand. What you do likely feels threatening to them in some way. When people attack me, I do a reframe... Just think how sad and unhappy a person would have to be to try and deliberately hurt another person who is just trying to make a positive difference in the world! Keep sharing your light ❤️

How do we screen these toxic managers during the interview process to pick up on red flags before we get into the job itself? What questions can we come prepared with? The common job interview question I hear many suggesting is asking them what is their management style, but this hasn’t worked for me as they straight up lie to cover for their bad behavior.
@JoBanks
@JoBanks 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for your question. As you say, it's a difficult one because toxic managers are manipulative and will lie with ease. A few of things come to mind: 1. What is the turnover of staff in your team? 2. How many staff have been promoted within your team? 3. Can I meet the team... without you?! Most companies will be happy for you to meet the rest of the team, especially at offer stage. If they aren't... red flag! Finally, listen to your gut feeling/intuition. If you get a bad feeling about someone, you should take it as a sign to do some more digging/investigation. Your intuition is not woo woo nonsense. It's based in your amygdala, and alerts you to threats that your conscious mind hasn't picked up on. It can't tell you in words that something is wrong, it can only give you a feeling. Hope that helps.

Sometimes you won't even meet or speak to that toxic manager until you start working. Horrible treatment has become very prevalent in the modern workplace since most people are living like slaughtered sheep, terrified to speak up.
@JoBanks

@@Comrade134 I definitely can't argue with that! It happened to me when I was recruited by one director, and within a month, he was replaced by what I can only describe as a monster!

@@JoBanks I'm in the exact same situation right now! I haven't been there for 2 months yet but I've already decided it's time for me to leave this toxic place. It's amazing how one bad manager can deplete the most successful business of their most valuable asset, good people flee and the dead weight remain.
