Mick Schumacher is out for next year, but he wants back in. Unfinished business, a point to prove. Well, he's not the only one. I wanted to look at the 12 drivers who Mick will have to out-impress in order to get back onto the Formula 1 grid for 2024.

Great work as always Tommo. Keep it up. I've always believed there should be more than 10 teams. Maybe another team. Maybe 2 or 3 more. Of course, they'll need to be competitive as the last thing you want is backmarkers miles off like HRT were. Current teams might not like it, but just do good enough to be in the top 10 and they've nothing to be worried about. I personally think a minimum grid should be 24 cars.

@James Black Firstly, yes he was. Why do you think he was constantly in the Merc garage and was being used as test driver? Also why did Toto say early on that if we cannot get him a drive we are happy to let him go to another team? And he had long been on the radar for a potential Williams drive, but it never quite happened. Secondly, you are totally missing the point. I am talking about his age. Plus, is Martins even on the radar? He has not even raced in F2 yet to see if he is worthy of an F1 seat.

A lot will depend on how long Fernando and Lewis stick around. They claim they want to keep driving on for years, but even GOATs can't stop the clock on their own ageing and eventually the ends won't justify the means for them. Decisions like this will likely come mid-season, and will kick open the driver market like Vettel did this year.

I think Isaak Hadjar and Roman Stanek (though you mentioned them) are extraordinary drivers ! Both 18 years old and ready for F2. I'm really disappointed Théo Pourchaire was so unlucky and couldn't win the championship (since his bad luck early on gave him a lot of points to grab back, he overdrove a bit). I wish he was on the F1 grid for 2023 instead of Zhou ! The guy is the youngest ever F2 winner, gets P5 in 2021 at just 18, then 2nd at 19. It's extraordinary. Sauber has its reasons to keep Zhou, who had a decent season, but Pourchaire is a wonderkid. In the young generation (born in 1999 of after), I think those who will shine are : Oscar Piastri, (Schwartzmann has the level to be in F1 but I doubt he'll get the opportunity sadly), Théo Pourchaire, Felipe Drugovich, Jack Doohan, Ayumu Iwasa (very underrated I think), Dennis Hauger (1 bad season but he's great), Isaak Hadjar, Roman Stanek, Oliver Bearman, Zane Maloney. And Kimi Antonelli is coming to F3 and will be sensational I'm 100% sure about it ! Piastri, Pourchaire, Hauger, Hadjar, Bearman and Antonelli are the best of the best young talents ! (And maybe Maloney, his second part of 2022 was sensational)

Zhou is very underrated by F1 fans I see for some reason even though he was winning F3 in 2018 but Mick or his 3rd teammate I can't remember who it was crashed with him and then he fell off and lost it.

Not just him but also other drivers too, they're talent but F1 stubborn enough that only want 10 teams on the grid

I’m still hoping for a Daniel-Valterri combo at Alfa Romeo, seems like a seat that will be open soon and the lack of the expectations associated with title contenders has benefited Bottas, why not Danny too?

Alfa only has a year left and both drivers have a contract

@@noduj 1) the team remains, Sauber will be in the sport for the foreseeable future with the same lineup. Alfa is only the sponsor and name, but when I say Alfa I mean the team Sauber, that team won't go, just the sponsor. 2) I don't mean Danny to race for Alfa in 2023, I mean 2024 onwards. We already knew Zhou would stay and Danny would leave months ago, therefore it is reasonable to make the jump and assume that I mean for 2024 not 2023. If Zhou remains at his current level, which is passable rookie competing adequately, he won't be worth keeping over others. If Pourchaire wins F2 next year, Alfa won't want to keep an average Zhou who wasn't even that good in F2 or F1, nor will they risk losing Pourchaire. If Pourchaire gets a reserve drive (possible as Kubica is leaving) then why wouldn't Alfa look at Danny in the same way they looked at Bottas? They stand to have a driver lineup that rivals the top 3 teams in this scenario.

Just one lil thing: ADAC F4 is not pronounced like one word, but it's spelled seperately, so A-D-A-C ;)

Pourchaire had bad luck yeah. But this is the second time that he underperform in pressure conditions. Was that in F3 and this season in F2.

If Mick does not join Williams, which is likely, I think his best chances are with Sauber. Audi will definitely wanna have at least one German driver. If Audi has any influence before 2026, Mick will join them. I only see other sauber juniors fighting for that spot too

Love your content @Tommo but I have pretty much disagree with nearly all of these drivers (bar Ricciardo). At the moment, unless you have grand prix experience or are a Piastri/Russell/Leclerc talent, teams will be hesitant signing rookies (literally de Vries is a prime example, only became a prospect after he proved he could compete in F1 with his performance in Italy). Schumacher has a way better chance than Palou or any F2 or F3 driver who has not won their respective titles within two years of competition. It's sad, but it's the truth.

I think Williams should actually have said Sargent needs to get his super licence and P5 or better in F2, because if he finishes sixth or seventh you could argue he doesn't deserve the seat

I have to remind myself to give Bearman a break... he's really young. But he has done some questionable things on-track, often at the expense of his teammate. He is exciting to watch, though. Iwasa had a good rookie year in F2 too. I know you can't include everyone, but that's what the comments section is for.
