Hey Zack, it was great meeting you and I'm glad you enjoyed driving my pride and joy - you might get a kick out of the fact that I had to send her right back to the mechanic the very next day, haha! (not your fault) Thanks for coming down to review her!

Nice car! I have one in the exact same color and year! If you don’t mind me asking, what did you replace your differential with? Mine is starting to howl when going at highway speeds.
@alphamaledriveshard
@alphamaledriveshard Год назад
Sweet. Mine's an 83 L-type. But with a 7MGE for that extra oomph. Also has a 5 speed, LSD and the 8 way seats. My diff too makes a mild howl between 70 and 90 mph. Really quiet above and below those speeds. Curious to know what diff you're using.
@jde4866
@jde4866 Год назад
@@Tomcat115 Thanks! Well, with the noise I would first replace the carrier and pinion bearings, but if you wanna go ahead and replace the whole carrier, I'm using a Detroit Tru-trac helical gear LSD that is 'supposed' to be in a 4runner, turns out the 7.5" diff is the same between the cars, the only issue is that the CV axles don't quite reach in far enough and I had to send the carrier to a machinist to remove a little bit of material to allow the axles to properly "snap" in, else you run the risk of them leaking everywhere or potentially popping all the way out.
@jde4866
@jde4866 Год назад
@@alphamaledriveshard very cool, was thinking about that swap but I like the 2 valve 5M noise too much. See my other comment for diff specs
@Tomcat115
@Tomcat115 Год назад
@@jde4866 I see. Thank you! I’m not gonna replace it right away. I’m probably gonna try to fix it first, but I just wanted to know my options in case I do replace it in the future. Anyways, thanks again for the advice!

Everybody reviewing the mk 2 Supra always miss the two most interesting 80’s features. The trouble light under the hood on the passenger side and my favourite the built-in light in the centre console attached to the phone cord.

My Aunt bought a new one in 1983 and my Mom got a Celica GT-S notch back new the same year. They were fun to drive on winding curvy roads as they handled so well, but that six cylinder was definitely more fun.

One thing that was not shown but a cool fact is the rear washer fluid bag. On the passenger side in the truck area, remove the panel and there is another small panel that pulls out. Once that is removed you will see a plastic/rubber bag that is for the rear wiper washer (this car has the wiper removed). The nifty thing is the small panel that is removed to access this bag is used to fill the bag.

I have an 85 Celica and I agree about about the driving experience. It’s so analog and also so easy at the same time. And I am always floored at just how comfortable the driver seat is. FYI. Those of us that have Celicas call the emblem a dragon.

Owned an 84 seven years traded it in for a 91 legend coupe. Both were tied for the best cars I ever owned and that excludes my 97 NSX which is great. You did a nice review. Only criticism is you saying it's not fast. Your too young to realize what was around back then for the money. This car gave you better fun performance than all the American junk running around and killer quality

Love the feel of the suspension in the p-type; it was actually touted as being Lotus-tuned suspension. Definitely has body roll but still manages to feel firmly planted.
@nutbastard
@nutbastard Год назад
The MR2 and the Corolla FX of all things also benefited from Lotus suspension design. I had a Corolla FX with the 4AC, total base model, pretty much gutless. But I shamed more than one sports car owner on winding mountain roads by staying in their rearview until the brakes faded, because the FX was just tossable. Turn the wheel and it will obey, it will stick, and it will stay square. And after all, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow.
@bubblecar2172
@bubblecar2172 Год назад
You should give an 84/85 RA64/RA65 Celica GT or GTS to compare the two. The 84 and 85 are the ones with EFI, and are the ones you want. And the GTS has the independent rear, 4 wheel vented disk brakes, and 3.90 rear gearing compared to the 3.42 rear. Another quick thing, the Celica and Supra badge is supposed to be a viking ship or longboat. The name Celica means "of the stars" or "heavenly" so it's like a space-ship of sorts. At least that my interpretation of the two. I own two kouki RA65 Celicas, and they're absolutely great. Would love to see a review comparing them against an MA61 Supra.

I was crazy about those cars in the 80s. I had a red 83 sport/5 speed with black leather but my favorite one was a black 84 sport 5 speed with cloth interior... it was mint with only 40K miles when I bought it. The 84 had some nice upgrades both for interior and exterior, plus 10 more horsepower. I kept that one for 5 years and then found a beautiful show room looking burgandy 86 (not the 86 1/2) with gray leather seats... still the sport version but this one had an automatic which I wasn't as crazy about. All of them had sun roofs which I really enjoyed. I drag raced the black 84 and it ran a best of 16:30 at 84 mph which wasn't too bad for the 80s. I was worried about breaking the rear end if I launched it too hard but it held up ok. The main thing is they looked as good as they drove which was great!!

My 85 l-type with all the p-type options had a full size spare that was the alloy that matched the rest of the wheels I always thought that was pretty cool! And the power door locks button was up with the windows on mine the front switch behind the gear shift with the fog light switch and the middle one was a coin tray and the rear one was the rear wipers on this one so what either didn't have a power lock button or it didn't have the fog light or rear wiper switch in the same location. I got a fog light switch out of another Celica and placed it in the center rectangle cut out where the change holder was and wired it to the brake lights so I could turn the brake lights off and go into stealth mode 😎

The ashtray is long because that is where everyone put their tire pressure Guage. Notice alot of interior plastics turned to dust. The best thing about the Supra is the configuration, that is the layout. Inline dohc 6 cylinder, edging its way up to 3 litres, 5 speed manual, heavy clutch, LSD rear end, GT coupe with outstanding reliability, quality construction and easy to service. If you bought a white P Supra, you could pretend you were driving the Lotus Esprit from James Bond - Spy Who Loved Me.

My 83 P Type has been down for the count for over a year now and seeing a fresh Mk2 video really helps me reaffirm my love for Mk2s. They're not fast at all, but super engaging and all analog. The steering has a nice weight to it and as somebody else said, they roll a bit in bends, but never get bend out of shape.

"That inline six appeal of (*hand motion*) you know what I mean?" Me, owning two inline six cars: "Not very articulate but... Yeah I do know what you mean" They aren't peaky, the torque comes in smoothly and strong, they just make an amazing sound, are happy at any rev, are unbelievably smooth as the revs climb. V6's tend to have a fat midrange power bump and fall off. Flat sixes tend to need some revs to get their juices going. Inline sixes just have this always ready and always willing feeling. A bizzare combination of high rotating mass because of the long crankshaft and paradoxical zippiness despite the long crankshaft.

I wanted one of these SOO bad when they came out -but I was in high school and of the, eh-hem, where kids either bought their own first heap or Mom got something new(er) and Jr. was awarded the 72 Torino. (I bought a Honda with fender rust and an oil consumption problem - hey just throw a couple cans of .69/quart rite aid ol in the hatch.....) These things weren't fastest on the block (decent for the era though) but they exuded sophistication and handled very, very well for the day. But then along came the 86 RX-7...

It's funny because the 300ZX I supposed one-up'd the MKIII supra. My brother actually has one, but I wasn't into cars at the time and now I own a very nice MKIII. I don't think the MKIII (A70) was really designed to compete with anything but the Z car, but with all that peeled away it's one of the best looking cars IMO on the road. Sadly they are very heavy cars even with the more than modest engine power boost.

This was the car I learned how to drive stick on. Its a vehicle that I plan to own again. Previous one was stolen by a murderous person who went on a killing spree. They sold my car to someone for quick cash as they were fleeing. Never saw it again.

I was so close to buying one of those in 98 for 2 grand. Didn't like the color. It was like an Easter m&m green. Came back with the cash and it was sold.
