Hey guys, the fish are back, and with them will come more content. This was a quick video of my first morning plugging session of the season, and definitely a great start. My next video will be a "what's in the box?" tackle discussion and I hope to share some different lures, rigging techniques, and tips and tricks that I've adopted over the years.
Apologies for the spotty audio as well. I was using my Hero 5 Black to get some underwater shots of all the squid at my feet and apparently this can fill the audio ports with water causing the sound to cutout briefly.
Thanks for watching guys! I always try to answer every question and respond to all comments so feel free to leave one!
Gear:
Rod: ODM Jigster 4-10, 11' built by CMS Tackle
Reel: Shimano Stella 14k with 40lb Maxcuatro and 60lb Seaguar leader, Krok 220/310lb swivel, #125 TA clip
Lure: Robert Davies Canal Dragon - When I say "modified" - an awesome plug and in my opinion you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better pencil when it comes to casting distance, and stability through the air. For the canal, however, I just prefer to have a little more of an “overbuilt” plug so I cut the stock thruwire, re-drill the plug to add more weight (2.7 oz to 4 oz), re-seal the inside with epoxy, remove the 150lb Rosco swivel and place a Krok #1 500Lb swivel in its place. I replace the stock hooks and rings with 6x VMCs (3/0 belly, 4/0 tail with barbs crushed) and the split rings are Wolverine's new "Stealth" black, Silver Zinc/Nickel w/Trivalent chromate series which essentially allows you to run their #5 135lb split ring size while achieving #6 200lb pull strength. I then coat the plug in 3-4 coats of 24 hour cure time epoxy. In my upcoming video I'll show some of the plugs I've made, as they cater specifically to canal fisherman. They're overbuilt, huge emphasis on terminal tackle, thru wire selection, double sinched, and locked tailwraps, and durable 3-4 coat epoxy sealed and coated finishes.

That’s how you do it! GREAT revival man. Really hope I start to see more who get in the water and take the time to release like this!!!

szczin I have so much respect and love for these fish. It’s kind of contradictory to say that while fishing for them for sport, but I’ll always do whatever I can (like using the barbless trebles or in-line singles and fighting them with substantial drag) to ensure the best possible condition when they’re released....especially here in the canal when the tide is cranking I make sure they’re really kicking before releasing

Can I ask what the difference is between the dragon you used and his last years similar looking model? Thanks
@DanEvan

Michael Schraffa Um, compared to a canal cruiser, the dragon has a much more dramatic bulbous tail where the cruiser has a gradual taper. For what it’s worth the eyes are also like 3D and not countersunk

Would bunker chunking or bait fishing work as effectively at the canal?
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 5 лет назад
Saad Jaradat Bunker chunking is how I caught my first ever canal keep and was the more popular method when I was a kid. I remember my old man having about 30 pogies and chumming half of them. I think it’s still a viable option around slack tide for sure. Eels at night are also killer
@JeffreyADodge
@JeffreyADodge 5 лет назад
where did you get that telephone cable style landyard for boga??
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 5 лет назад
It’s a Rod-On safety leash meant to clip to a boat rod during the ride out. It was either that or continue using 3 Amazon lanyards together. It’s perfect for the 60 boga
@supremekarate1
@supremekarate1 6 лет назад
Everyone says to you should wear Korkers when you fish the canal due to the slippery rocks there. But no one actually wears them? Do you suggest wearing Korkers when fishing the canal?
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 6 лет назад
supremekarate1 I wear korkers, yes. I’d recommend getting at least the Buckskin models. I have the new Wraptr Korkers because my Greenbacks got chewed up pretty bad in one season. People typically don’t want to shell out the money for a pair of $150 Korkers....that is until you bust your ass and/or rod taking a nose dive off the rocks. I wear Korkers but just as important, I wear waders so that I can get off the rocks and onto the flat(ish) bottom. This allows me to make full back casts as well as providing more stability while I cast allowing for much further distance. It also gives you a stable platform for fighting fish. Now this isn’t always the case in certain spots or at high tide and standing on the rocks is unavoidable. That’s when I’m glad I’ve got the right footwear.

@DanEvan
@DanEvan 5 лет назад
As of right now I don’t....yet....I’ve spent the entire past year testing with 5 other guys to make sure the plugs can get beat on properly. So far haven’t had anything close to a failure or compromising of the plug body. The big thing for me and one of the parts I take very seriously is making sure the wood bodies are water sealed good and proper with the combination of epoxy and traditional wood sealer. Without that it doesn’t matter how pretty the lure is because once it takes on water it swells, the action goes to shit, and it will eventually split. I didn’t want to put my name behind anything that wasn’t proven.

Hey dan, why not show how you upgrade the lures u use in the canal???
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 5 лет назад
Roy Barlow I’m certainly not opposed to showing anything, it just didn’t occur to me to do so....I simply take a plug that I think could use a little help and upgrade it to suit my needs. In this case I took the plug I was using in the video and I cut the through wire out and removed the swivel, hooks, and rings. I drilled the tail out to accept another ounce of tailweight and re-sealed the lure internally. I then coated the entire lure in 4 coats of heavy duty epoxy. The swivel that came on the lure was a 150lb test nickel constructed Rosco swivel that I replaced with a 500lb test stainless steel Krok swivel. The wire itself is usually 304 or 308 stainless and I replaced that with a 316 marine grade stainless. The rings are 125lb Rosco split rings that I replaced with 198lb VMC stainless steel rings. The hooks were 3/0 4x VMCs and I replaced them with 3/0 6x VMCs. There’s a few little odds and ends I do as well but those are the main changes I make. I could show these changes in the future if there was an interest in doing so, but out of respect for the original plug builder, I didn’t want to make a big production out of it.

Dan, did you upgrade the power handle knob on the Stella 14k in the video? The Stella 14k's usually come with the rubber power handle but I want to get the one you have but can't seem to find one online. If you could maybe give me a link to where you got the knob that would be awesome brother! Also great catch, and video!!
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 5 лет назад
Hey man, like you the whole “feel” of a reel is made or broken by how the handle feels and looks. I never understood why the smaller Stella’s utilized very clean looking power knobs while the bigger ones got the rubber egg. And just like you I couldn’t find something that both looked right and wasn’t going to have issues with bearings or smoothness. I searched forever to find the one I have, and I’m glad that I can help you save the time and trouble. The knob I have is a Shimano Yumeya Type B from Saltywater Tackle. It’s been awesome and completes the look of the reel imo. Here’s the link bud! www.saltywatertackle.com/home/908-4874-shimano-yumeya-aluminum-round-power-handle-knob-l-type-b.html#/50-color-grey
