The 5.0 gets marginally better MPG when towing and sounds better, that's probably it. The 2.7 has the same torque at much lower RPM's and gets better mpg unless it's towing. The 2.7 is a great engine

As far as long term reliability on ecoboosts... Our 2011 f150 3.5 eco 130,000+ miles, no major issues. Our 2015 expedition 3.5 eco 40,000+ miles, no major issues. My brothers 2013 f150 3.5 eco. 40,000+ miles, no major issues. My cousins 2012 f150 3.5 eco. 170,000+ miles, no major issues. Taking delivery of a 2018 King Ranch in a few weeks, and the engine choice was a huge debate for me. Coming from a 5.7L HEMI that has been nothing but problems over the past 4 years. I knew I was never buying a Dodge/Chrysler ever again. After everything was said and done, I went with the 3.5L Ecoboost. I tow a camper and I figured worst case scenario was pay $2,000 for 6 year 125,000 bumper to bumper coverage.

RAM TRUCKS While your response was well thought, included relevant data to support it, and was grammatically superior to mine, I have to disagree. My 2014 Dodge HEMI has been a total piece of crap, just like my 2003 Wrangler was. My Dodge has racked up more than $3,500+ in repairs in a short time. Water pump, fuel pump, aux pump, engine mount, sunroof motor, backup camera filled with water, headlight bulb that required removal of the entire front bumper assembly to replace, and smoke from the exhaust when started on an incline.

GM has no twin turbo cars in their line up, except for the Cadillac CT6, but what they do have is a supercharger from the Corvette. So they should supercharge the silverado. Ram has the supercharger from the Hellcat so they should drop the Hellcat motor in it. Ford does have turbos so yea, twin turbo 5.0 is feasible.

The ecoboost is fine if you don't tow heavy. It just can't take the strain of heavy use. That little 2.7 has to really rev high to make its power. Crusing around town or light towing and no problems. Tow 7500 lb trailers regularly and you're just asking for problems.
@DemsRdisguisedredcoats
@DemsRdisguisedredcoats 7 лет назад
Greg Rowe I really hate commenting on youtube posts, but people talking out of their ass like you just piss me off. The 2.7 and the 3.5 both make peak torque before 3k. I towed 11000lb 5th wheel with my 3.5 and I never revved it over 3k, takeoff, uphill, didn't matter. There is not a better gas tow motor on the planet. I've towed with them all, so I'm speaking from experience, not out of my ass.

I am on my 4th ecoboost, i probably don't have them, long enough to experience problems but I can tell you they are awesome, I am on second Platinum and I love it but will be getting a 2018. Came back from trip 2 weeks ago, over 2000 miles and got 22.4 MPG. Around town it hovers about 16.7 to 17.5. I sometimes have a problem keeping my foot off gas pedal at traffic lights, I love feel of that turbo kicking in!

I can't wait to see you guys do a head to head with those engines on the Ike Gauntlet. I'm a V8 guy but have softened up a little and now respect the Ecoboost abilities. If I were to be given one, I'm sure I'd enjoy the Ecoboost. If I were to buy with my money, it's the 5.0. Proven reliability speaks volumes to my wallet. Now, if only they'd make the twin turbo 5.0......... Edit: As of 11-22-17, I checked out a fully loaded, 3.5 Ecoboost Lariat. It was a complete shock to the system to feel that low end power. I ended up going for it. It's absolutely astonishing.

My only concern with the 2.7 and 3.5 is, how much harder are they having to work over the 5.0 to get those numbers. What engines will still be going strong after 200,000 + miles?
@Metalbass1979
@Metalbass1979 7 лет назад
Eric Raney That is why I'd buy the 5.0 when I decide to upgrade. I'm on a 5.4 that is approaching 200k in my 2006 F150, my wife has a 2001 Expedition 5.4 with nearly 200k, my 4.6 2002 Mustang GT is around 170k and all 3 are going strong. My wife had a 5.0 Explorer with well over 300k on it and no problems. Heck, her 1985 Mustang LX is about to get a 5.0 transplant soon. The Ford V8 had more than proven itself. I'm not gonna say that the Ecoboosts won't hold up because I have no way to prove that, but if I spend my money, I'm gonna go with the safer bet.
@jessaphillips2846
@jessaphillips2846 7 лет назад
they really aren't, especially for the 95%+ of owners that don't tow and rarely use the truck's capabilities. most 1/2 ton pickup trucks haul a broken down lawn mower in the bed at most in America, nowhere near the payload capacity. the engines run more air into the engine with the turbos but they're designed to handle that. actual hard work is not an issue for most owners.
@4-LOW
@4-LOW 7 лет назад
RELIABILITY is the reason the Coyote engine is the best option. Ford totally scrapped the EcoBust after 5 years and started over from scratch because of the shear number of problems and TSBs and recalls on the original. Sophisticated engines belong in luxury cars. Reliable engines belong in trucks.
@kingdaniel3519
@kingdaniel3519 7 лет назад
Reliability is subjective.
@mmateri
@mmateri 7 лет назад
the 5.0L hasn't been without its issues, go actually look. What many people don't seem to realize also is that though yes the old 5.0L 302 and 351 windsors were extremely reliable, they do not share one thing with the new 5.0L other than the amount of displacement. If you drive the 5.0L back to back with a 3.5L you're a damn fool to want the v8. And this is coming from a guy who actually blew a 2013 ecoboost. It was replaced on warranty, and I traded the truck in for a 2015 ecoboost. Absolutely no regrets.
@4-LOW
@4-LOW 7 лет назад
Reliability is certainly not subjective. All one has to do is compare the shear number of EcoBust recalls and TSBs to the same for the Coyote from 2011-2014 and it's painfully obvious why Ford scrapped the generation 1 EcoBust and started over from scratch. So when you consider that the Coyote has more horsepower, can run E85, is cheaper to purchase, and lasts longer...it's a no brainer. Well, for guys with brains.

I then changed my tune, went to welding school, have a camper and HEAVILY researched before i bought my next truck, the 2.7 towing has all proved great and all at low end power. I traded my silverado(love my chevy's) and bought a 2.7 ecoboost and tow my camper with, while traveling on job projects. +TimmyTeaBag If you can provide some material to back up that claim, fine, but I think there have been a lot of generalizations from the vocal minority of people having issues. You also have to remember the EcoBoost is a brand new engine (in the grand scheme) so expect some first-year issues. Once you get past the timing chain problem and the intercooler moisture problem there aren't any other major issues. We're still going strong on our almost 90k 3.5L with only the timing chain being a concern. No regrets over not taking the v8.

I would like to see what effect the 10 speed has on acceleration. Given the similar power to weight, you would think a 5.0l 10 speed would compete with a 6.2l chevrolet unladen. The 6.2 has gobs more torque though, and both have similarly wide ratio transmissions (6 speeds) which puts the 5.0 at sizable disadvantage. The GM ends up being something like a second faster through the quarter. Given the 10 speed 5th gear is what the old 6 speed 3rd gear was, I am hoping a close ratio transmission should help out the relatively peaky but higher revving 5.0.

I've had 5 new pickups in my life a 350 cvevy, 5.3 chevy, two 5.4 fords and a 1985 3/4 ton 351 ford. I won't include the 77 F-100 straight six I had, doesn't really compare the newer stuff. I'm going to buy my last pickup in 2018....if I were to buy it today it probably would be the 2018 2.7 Lariat. However I do like the Silverado a lot also........tough decision but I think the aluminum Ford wins.

I can tell you from experience. I’d much rather the turbos as the 5.0 is NOT a truck engine. It doesn’t make its power until around 4000 rpms. This is the opposite of what you want for towing.🤣. Maybe if they stroked out a 289 or something or started making the 351 again, the V-8 would be a viable option.
@davidgabrie1302
@davidgabrie1302 6 лет назад
I imagine the cost of maintain the V8 would cost more because there is more to handle, so the economics should be taken into consideration too. Tune-up's, oil changes, and mileage must be a factor in this decision too.

Ford is trying to kill the 5.0. if the 2.7 can get the same amount of torque and almost the same power numbers as the 5.0, the 5.0 has so much more in it. It's obvious that Ford is trying to kill their only proper engine option for the F150, but they won't admit it. They're making the 5.0 less appealing for buyers then acting innocent when they kill it off because the sales are down.

I am a chevy man all the way. however, I know a number of Ford dealer employee's. The techs have this to say. If you want a sporty truck and only gonna tow a bass boat once or twice a month then the eco is good for you. It's also a good truck in the mud since you can spin them so high. If you need to tow a lot or heavy and order the truck to do so your mileage advantage is gone even worse than V8. the bottom end tq is what you need to tow the eco has to scream to get into the power band. The ecos should last as well as any production engine they were designed to be run with turbos. The maintenance issue is the turbos I don't care who makes it turbos wear out. 7500 buck to replace one. they will usually have to be replaced in pairs. Now that only matters if you keep a truck for a long time but I don't think in 10 are so years you will see as many EcoBoost on the road as you see 10 to 15-year-old trucks on the road now. whos gonna spend more than a truck is worth to replace turbos. for those of you dreaming of a turbo V8 That defeats the purpose of the Ecoboost. to get hp numbers with GPM numbers.

SILVERADO THE KING OF TRUCKS All good debates start with "I don't care what anyone else thinks." Was the Coyote a proven engine 2.5 years after its inception? That's how old the Ecoboost is in the F-150, yet I haven't seen an overwhelming number of problems posted anywhere. I have seen it run the Ike Gauntlet with flying colors, and take the Gold Hitch award.
@BC08
@BC08 7 лет назад
ckeegan003 It doesn't take much to understand that yes, the 5.0L is a better option for you plan on buying a truck and keeping it long term. It doesn't deal with boost, therefore has lower power density/cylinder pressure, therefore it has to endure less stress. The 5.0, which has close to 4.6 dimensions (rod length, deck height) has proven to be a very, very low wearing architecture. The 5.0 itself, unlike the 3V Mods, has proven itself a bulletproof platform. No valvetrain problems or oiling problems, unlike the 3V. And Ford has made.consistent running revisions to the 5.0, and the 15-up 5.0s are excellent, they are 800 rwhp capable long blocks from the factory now. The 5.0 has also been a RFF engine since day one, the EcoBoost 3.5 didn't get roller followers until the Gen 2 EB came out in 2017. RFFs are a much lower friction and lower wearing setup than DAMB setups. The Ford 5.0 is the best architecure Ford makes, and arguably the best in the business. You have to realize that the EB engines deal with nearly double the cylinder pressure, and the extra parts do add failure points. When/if turbo seals fail oil consumption increases which fouls cats, etc. The 5.0 is definitely the way to go if you plan on putting 300+K on a truck. If it's a lease, or you plan on flipping the truck at 150-200K...then it won't really matter.

Those "turbos" are like 10mm turbos, not 80 or 120 like bigger trucks or diesels. They aren't meant to spin under constant load for long periods of time (i.e. towing any kind of weight any long distance) they'll burn up so fast and you're left shelling out $4000.00 per turbo to replace. Sure they make crazy boost for a short period of time especially if you don't tow, but forget towing a boat or a camper. If you want to tow, get a Diesel or a gasser like a 5.7L or bigger that's geared to tow. It amazes me that people will compare a (gas) V6 to a V8 when it comes to this stuff.

You didn't really answer the question your video title posed, however since the blue truck was a 2.7 EB, clearly the V8 is the better way to go since it can be optioned to tow a lot more. I think the 2.7 EB tops out around 8000 lbs, but the 5.0 tops out at 11,500. So if the question is capacity, then V8. If the question is acceleration through mountains and traffic along with towing experience, then the 2.7 might win. But when I clicked on the video I was expecting a 5.0 vs 3.5 EB battle.

While the 5.0 Coyote Mustang and F-150 5.0 have the same displacement and bear the same Coyote name they are slightly different and there are some internal differences. One of the most noticeable differences is the Rev limiter much lower on the F-150 which is tuned more for torque and less for HP. But also the Cam is slightly different in the ones they put in the Mustangs. ALSO instead of a cast iron manifold on the Mustangs like the F-150 receives, the Mustang gets steel tubing not headers but something close to a header and certainly a vast improvement over old iron manifolds for anything stock.

Well said Roman. I've been waiting for the fabled 5.0 EcoBoost since the Coyote debuted in '11. Applying power/displacement ratios from the current mid-grade 3.5EB (in the Expedition)... 3.5EB = 400 HP, 480 TQ So, a 5.0EB would make 571 HP, 685 TQ. (class-dominating, Beast) Now swell the 2.7EB and it's numbers to 5 liters...... It gets ridiculous. ...We all know Ford has developed this thing already. Just how long till we see it. I had a 2014 3.5L turbo. Towed my 7,500 lb trailer well...except at times pulling up a steep grade the turbos made things too hot and I would get a warning 'depowered condition' then I would loose speed from 75 mph down to 50. That's not good when you were passing cars in the left lane and now your stuck in the left lane holding up everyone else. You can't just jump over to the right when you are 55' long with simi's going 40 mph. Now I have a 6.2L Super Duty. Its not as quick as the 3.5L, but its constant and dependable. I can still pull 75 up most hills in the mountains. The truck itself has a lot more stability when towing. It also sounds great!
