#kenworth #logtruck #w990 In this video I share what I like and don't like about the W990 and a bunch of other random thoughts. Truck is a 2022 Kenworth W990 X15 Cummins, 18 speed manual, Meritor 46K rears. Enjoy the video.
Real nice ride Farrell, 11x24.5 tires. will give You better traction floatation and last long. Yes they'll be a little heavier. May even take that jump away when starting as they roll easier. I like the shallower dash gauges instead of the older deep recess ones. Pledge furniture polish makes it easy to keep the dash dust free. Enjoy Your videos.
Thank you, Jim. Thats good information on the tires. I've always run 24's but switched this time mostly for tire availability according to my tire shop. I do miss the ground clearance the most. I'll give Pledge a try, thanks for the input and thanks for watching.
Great Video. Smart move going with Cummins and not Paccar. There’s a huge difference on the hills I’m always getting pushed or passed by other trucks going up hill. The Paccar just doesn’t have the low end torque. Also my truck is like yours in the back. But to prevent the load from hitting the pintle the shop welded a big piece of round stock on the edge of the frame so the load will hit that. It works really well. And the automated transmissions are garbage. A true automatic like the Alison’s are so much better at least on flat ground. But the manual 18spd is definitely the way to go for the woods.
Hey Isaac, I like the cummins for the jake brake as well. That's a good idea to weld a piece of metal above the hitch. Thanks for the input and for watching. See you on the highway!
As a fellow small guy myself, I feel your pain on the hood situation. If I parked my A model wrong, nose high at all, I had to lift it from the fender, and I hate doing that. Sure thing, one cold day the grease was stiff enough (truck was flat in my driveway), had to open from the fender, and as I was running to grab the hood from the front my dang cable broke and smashed the hood on the bumper... I was so mad at myself...
Look at the t909 kenworth in Australia slightly shorter but way harder to see out of , they are going to do a t910 soon which is based off of a w990 but shorter. Great video love to see more people do these updates
Great review! Sounds like she’s doing well for the most part. Sorry to hear that darn big hood is so hard to open/see over. A air assist. ram would be a good idea. Have you ever tried opening the hood from one of the front fenders, would that be any easier to open? Just a thought. I sure hope Kenworth comes out with a shorter hood 990 which would be cool. Them darn wheel seals. Grrr!! I certainly like the look of the day cab 990! Catch you on the next video.
Thanks Cody, yes, the truck is doing just fine. I've tried from the side a few times and it's about the same, the hood is just heavy. Thanks for the support and for watching, see you on the next one!
Just my view on Disc verse Drums is simple would go back old school in your pickup/car & drive on drums or even a split not for myself. Have driven a wide variety of Trucks here in NZ & by choice would have Disc or Modern Wedge brakes that some Asian Trucks have ABS, just for superior braking performance Down here we get the Australian PACAR Kenworth & they are extremely well built trucks widely used in our Logging Industry here. Like your videos keep em comming.
That's a great point on the disc brakes. The extra stopping ability is a good thing to have with all the traffic on the roads now. Thanks for the input and for watching.
Nice to not have any grease fittings on the disc. I did have a caliper get tight for some reason and get really hot. Of course I lost the seal on that corner a couple months later. I had to go back to a more traditional pete after 6 years in a 567. I miss being able to spin the passenger mirror down when I back into the landing. …. And the clutch, the room inside, the vision out of the huge windshield, I will go back to the new style next time. Paccar may not give us a choice by then
That's a great point, it is nice to have a few less grease fittings. You are right Paccar not going to give us a choice here shortly. Thanks for the input and for watching.
How do you determine when to buy a new truck? Is it strictly miles? Will you go back to a W900 next time. Also do you always use the clutch when shifting? My uncle drove a truck 50+ years the last 30 hauling logs and always used the clutch. He did all his own wrenching.
I went off age and miles when I bought this one. I will try to get into a W900 if they are still around next time. I try to use the clutch most of the time but sometimes I get a little lazy. That's awesome about your uncle, 50 years is quite the career, I bet he has some stories. A good friend of mine had a 50-year career hauling logs, he could work circles around me. Thanks for watching.
You have plenty of room on the front for floaters, is that not recommended on the west coast? Tune up to 600hp you will feel the difference ...nice rig and preciate the vids
